Zen Xtra 60 gig wont turn on

Okay, I just got my xtra yesteday and its already not working, needless to say I'm not very pleased. I was listening to the player in my livingroom today and all the sudden it just shut off. I thought it might be the battery at first but when I went to plug the player into the charger it wouldnt even start to charge, so I couldnt turn it on either. I've read a few other posts and they all tend to say that I need to use the reset button, but I dont have any power to do so. PLEASE HELP!!

Maybe the battery is too dead for the charging circuit to start when you plug it in. I've seen a few different ways to "jump-start" the charging:
- If you have a switch-controlled outlet, plug it in there. Then flip the switch on and off a few times and watch to see if it starts charging. (Or you can hook everything up and then plug and unplug the AC cord.) Sometimes the resulting current spike starts it charging.
- (***This is what Tech Support says to do***) Plug in the player with the battery removed and turn it on if you can. Leave it going like that for 2 hours and then insert the battery while it's plugged in. If it doesn't start charging, take out the battery and put it in again. Try it a few times before giving up.
- (*Sort of advanced*) Use a multimeter to make sure the battery isn't full (3.8 volts) or too dead (significantly under 3 volts). (If it's full, the player's broken and has to be repaired or replaced. If it's dead, the battery is probably at the end of its life; get a new battery.) If it's close to dead, you can charge it a little bit by connecting a 4-5 volt power source to it, with correct polarity. Only charge it likt this for about a minute. Now it should have enough in it for the Zen Xtra to charge it.
The other possibility is that the player is dead. My Zen Xtra 40 GB crashed with a black screen in the middle of a song. I think there was either a partially defecti've component in it or it killed its firmware. Fortunately I was within the 90 day warranty, so I sent it in.

  • Zen Xtra 60 gig problem, help requi

    hello
i have a nomad juxebox zen xtra 60 gig, and it has worked fine for several months.
recently, i had a problem that when i was listening to a track, parts of other tracks would interrupt the song, before switching back to the original song. this would only last for a second or so, and not all the time, rarely in fact
since then, and my current situation, the player when loaded up has gone into "rebuilding library" mode, and has seemed to fail in doing so, "firmware problem" has appeared on the screen and the blue light is on.
it doesnt do anything else until i turn it off.
so , can anyone help me? is there a way to sort this out?
    thanks in advance

The link is near the bottom of the FAQ and called "I have a "firmware problem" error". It'll take you to this page. You can of course use find and just enter "firmware problem" on the FAQ page.

  • Zen Xtra 30 Gig Firmware Problems! H

Ive had my Zen Xtra 30 Gig For a While Now, it worked just fine today. I thought I would update the firmware on it, so I downloaded the New Firmware for it, and Followed the Directions. And now it wont work!
"Before installing the firmware update, be sure that you have:Charged the player's batteryConnected the power cableTurned off your playerDisconnected your player's USB cable from your computerTo install the firmware update, you must first remove the firmware in your player using the Reload OS function:Press and hold the Play button, while inserting a pin or paper clip into the Reset button on your player. The Reset button is near the Volume buttons. The player starts up in Rescue mode.Select the Reload OS option. The current firmware will be erased from the player.Connect your player to your computer with the USB cable.Double-click the firmware file, and follow the instructions on the screen. When prompted, click the Upgrade option. When the upgrade is complete, your player restarts.A "rebuilding the library" message appears on your player's LCD. This message disappears when your player has finished rebuilding the music library. The firmware is now updated."
Ive done the "relod OS opition" and mow my Computer wont recognize my Player. Ive done the clean up option, and even tried a differnt USB port on my computer and it still wont recognize it. Its basically stuck in "rescue Mode". What Should I do? Ive got around 6 or 7 Gigs of Music on it so I dont really want to format it, But will a Format do the Trick for me?

I'm unsure what your problem is. Is it that your PC won't recognise your Zen Xtra when you plug in the USB cable? I had this problem and had to reinstall the device drivers here

  • Zen Xtra 30 Gig - No longer possible to shuffle within playlists after latest firmware upd

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem. After surviving the Windows Media Player /firmware update nightmare, my Zen Xtra 30 gig now will not shuffle within a playlist. Instead, when I select a playlist in shuffle mode, it shuffles through ALL the playlists. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

Same here! Are they going to fix this, or is there a workaround? I was thinking about killing it and going back to the older software...

  • Nomad Zen Xtra 40 gig...please h

I just got my Zen Xtra 40 gig today. The thing that's bothering me is that the player reads the ID3 tags of whatever they're called. Is there anyway I can get the player to read the FILE NAME insted, because most of my MP3's tags arent right. PLEASE HELP ME

Nope, the Xtra reads the tags. Why don't you fix them? Here's a great freeware that'll allow you to do just that. It's called MP3 Library, and you can get it here:

  • Zen Xtra Backlight doesn't turn off, OS free

A problem started today where my 40gb Zen Xtra can no longer get past the EAX screen, and stays lit the entire time. I'm unable to turn it off except by removing the battery, and as soon as I put the battery back in, it automatically turns back on and freezes again. I reset, then I went to recovery mode and cleaned up the OS, but the same problem persists.
I notice that at some point from the time the player turns on to the time it freezes, I feel my hard dri've stop vibrating, and I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
    Any suggestions or ideas?
    Thanks!

my zen xtra has done the same thing. it wont turn off. it wont go any further. i have gone to the rescue mode and tried all the options except reloading the os because i am afriad then i wont even have a os since it wont connect to my computer thru USB either. this is the second time i have had a major problem with it. the first time it completely failed on me and went to rescue mode everytime i turned it on. i eventually had to get a rma for it because the hard dri've had failed completely. will i need to do that again cause i have looked at every piece of advice available and nothing has helped.

When I couldn't get the restore to fix my iPod, I fooled it into thinking that all it needed was a Sofware Update which worked. If you have the latest firmware on your iPod this is what I did to make it think it needed a software update. Since your iPod is fried and at the point where your just about ready to send it in, you could give this method a shot. I make no guarantee.
Open up a new Terminal Window
Type "cd" (no quotes) and drag the iPod from your desktop to the terminal window so that it fills in the path. Then press return.
Then type "cd iPod_Control", press return
Then type "cd Device", press return
In this directory there is a file called SysInfo which contains things such as the version number of your iPod's Firmware. This is the file that I edited and made look like my iPod had an older version of firmware than what it really had.
Use a text editor that your most familiar with to edit this file. I like to use nano for its simplicity. Here are the rest of the instructions using nano.
Type "nano SysInfo" and press return. Now you'll be able to read this file.
You will see that the 9th line does shows the following.
    visibleBuildID: 0x01218000 (1.2.1)
This is what we'll change. Change the Hex value to something older for example 0x01118000. Also do the same for the line above it, buildID: 0x04218000 (4.2.1).
When your done making your changes press ctrl x to exit and save your changes.
Now load up your iPod Updater software, hopefully now instead of restoring the iPod, the "Update" button above it will now be enabled. Try updating the iPod and I hope it works. In my case it did and was surprised. However my friends iPod had a hardware related issue so needless to say this method did not work on his.

  • Zen Xtra 40 Gig Owner W/Subscription Questi

So I see Creative has put out some firmware to run subscription services on the Zen Xtra's now. Are there any subscription services that don't rquire WinXP? I just reinstalled 2k Pro like 2 weeks ago, finally got everything set up how I like it, and I don't feel like doing it again for another year. Considering the savings in cost per track to put stuff on my Zen vs. the savings of just a subscription fee, and my buddie's legit XP Pro volume license, it might be worth the upgrade. Got a few other questions too.
. I'm considering going with Napster To Go or Yahoo Music Unlimited (probably Napster as I f*ckin' HATE all things SBC). What's anyone's experience with either service, and are there any other services you'd reccomend? Part of the reason I'd like to go with napster is I'd get a free small player I could use at the gym or on my average 3 - 5 mile run. I'm sure either of these activities would beat the hell out of my Zen Extra.
    2. One thing I've noticed about Napster with my trial subscription is that all tracks still aren't readily downloadable, and you still must purchase them. Is this the case with the more expensi've "To Go" option? Are other services like this?
    3. I generally use MusicMatch Plus to play all my music tracks and rip my CD's. I noticed I could play the tracks I downloaded in Napster with WMP 9, but not MMatch JB 8. Does anyone know if there's a MMatch version that will run tracks from Napster, etc? I'm not too interested in their subscription services. They have no "To Go" deals, all tracks are $.99 all the time, MX radio ain't that great, and On Demand's not too awesome either.
    4. This is an important one for me. I noticed that the firmware upgrade says once I upgrade my Zen extra, I cannot connect to any non-XP machines. Is this true even for the data library? I frequently use my Zen to back up files or take my personal picutre collection with me.
    5. Another important one: I noticed on the firmware upgrade I may not be able to transfer as many files to my Zen and I may lose some capacity. The description specifically said this is more noticeable on larger players. My Mp3 collection's already 27 gigs (mostly legit too!) and several thousand tracks, and I pack another 3 - 5 gigs of pics / working papers most of the time. I'll likely have a ton of subscription tunes on my machine as well if I upgrade. What are these limits, and how will they affect me?
    6. I currently use NomadSync to keep my Zen synced to my ginormous collection, will it work with the new firmware?
Thanks for any info, it's much appreciated.

(Initial) Yes, all subscription services require WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0. Microsoft did release MTP drivers for WinMe, 2000, and 98SE, but they require customization which no one has managed to carry out; and even then, the lack of WMP 0 for anything but WinXP strongly suggests subscription services won't work with other OSes.
. I tried NTG for awhile before switching to YMU, and I personally prefer YMU. (Don't worry about SBC; they just contract with Yahoo! for content--as does Verizon and many other telcos around the world.) I would say that you're better off using the stand-alone Napster player than the one embedded in WMP 0, although WMP 0 is a requirement. But then, NTG didn't have the free flash player when I tried it; if that's important to you, by all means go for it. (Though you might be able to find a cheap subscription-compatible flash player, probably a 52MB or GB SanDisk Sansa m200.)
    2. I believe that Napster still makes purchase the default option on trials; it switches to download when you become a paying customer. YMU has buttons on every track for streaming (play button), download as a subscription track (plus-sign button, formerly musical notes), and purchase (Buy button).
    3. I'd try upgrading to MMJB 0. Or consider MMJB 0., which officially is released only for Dell DJs but can be used with other players; it has a "to go" version of On Demand. (Perhaps DM can post the link in this thread.)
    4. Since the Xtra doesn't have removable-disk mode, you can only connect to machines with WinXP SP or 2 and WMP 0, even for data. The Micro, MicroPhoto, and Sleek have removable-disk mode; non-XP machines can access the separate data partition, but not the regular partition. The Xtra and Touch don't have a separate data partition, only the regular partition which requires WinXP.
    5. Though it's unclear, most of us believe the reduction of capacity is due to additional firmware code on the dri've--which explains the need to reformat the dri've.
    6. MTP is a different protocol from traditional Creative protocols; though not specifically mentioned on the NomadSync site, since it doesn't mention MTP, Janus or PlaysForSure, it won't work with MTP players. You'll have to use WMP 0, Zen Xtra Media Explorer (included in the Creative Software Suite), MediaSource 3.30.2 with the MTP plug-in (download MediaSource first, the plug-in is in the suite), or your subscription player (Napster, Yahoo! Music Engine, MMJB 0., etc.) to transfer files.

  • Zen Xtra, 30-gig is

All right, I've looked over the forums and it seems some people had the same problem as me, but I'm not entirely sure, so I'm going to ask again.
My mp3 player works fine and I love it to death. It wasn't until I updated that I started getting problems. There's no problem with the device, it's the drivers. The drivers that came with the cd for my Zen Xtra work just fine. Whenever I plug it into my computer, it shows up, I can do whatever with the songs, and close out again without a hitch.
But when I did the recommended update for my drivers to the new ones on Creative's site, it no longer worked. When I'd plug it in, I'd get nothing. It would keep saying that it isn't connected. So I went to the add/remove hardware option to find that it had a small "x" over the picture, saying the device wasn't acti've or something. So I activated it, restarted my machine, like it told me to, and plugged it in again. Nothing. Thinking that something went wrong, I went back and checked it on the hardware option under USB.
Nope, everything fine except now there's no drivers installed! O.o Very, very strange. And in order to use my mp3 player, I was forced to pop back in my cd that came with it and install the old drivers, which work just fine. I don't understand why it's doing this. Am I doing something wrong? (I use the autoupdate feature on Creative's site, just to make sure I get everything that I have and not something else, which is what I did when updated my drivers to the newer ones for my mp3 player. Followed the install instructions to a T, and it still didn't work...O.o).
    Explain, someone, please?

I had this problem once with my Nomad Jukebox 3, which is often why I suggest to check the driver version as well in Device Manager.
On the one hand, if everything is working now then I would suggest leaving it alone.
If you're still interested in updating then manually download the .30 drivers from Nomadworld.com downloads. If you have a similar problem again you can manually point to them with the Device Manager update drivers routine, in the folder <EM>C:\Program Files\Creative\Jukebox 3 Drivers</EM>.

  • Charging my Creative Zen Xtra 40 gig by

Is it possible to charge my player by using the usb cord. I thought I saw somewhere that you could but now I cant find it.
    Geoff

You can, but not with the out-of-the-box cable, and not through the data port. And it's only enough power to charge, not to run it while charging.
If you solder the power leads from a USB cable to the right size of adaptor plug, you can. USB uses the right voltage and it provides anough amperage to charge. If you try to do anything that makes the hard disk spin, you'll draw too much current and the USB port will shut off (either until you unplug the device or until you reboot the computer, depending on the port).
I used a GameBoy Advance SP USB charging cable and tapped into the wires. I added a RadioShack AdaptaPlug tip of the large yellow size. I soldered the red USB wire to the far terminal and the black one to the nearer terminal. (Use a continuity checker to see which is which and solder the red wire to whichever one goes to the inside of the barrel.) Then I used hot glue and electrical tape to secure the plug onto the cable. The resulting cable can charge my GameBoy Advance SP, my Zen Xtra and my MP3-compatible CD player.

  • Zen xtra 40 gig help

    Hi
I got my Zen Xtra today. I changed all the ID3 tags of every MP3 I have to organze all my music on the MP3 player, but when i go into the artists list... It will have 2 seperte artists for the same one, for example it will say 50 cent and then 50 cent right under it, the name spelled the same way. This happens with a few artists. usually, most of the songs for that artist are under the top name and or 2 are under the 2nd. Please tell me how to fix this, I spent 3 hours fixing the Tags and I dont want it all to go to waste

  • Nomad Zen Xtra 40 gig Problems - Looking for Redemption and OS - Do not want to convert to I-

<SPAN><SPAN> I've been having issues with my player. It has only been about 8 months, I think, since I have had it. I have wanted a Nomad since the first gig came out, junior in high school. I just now started college, but would be a senior had I started right off. I have been bragging about Creative's Nomad forever and encouraging my friends to go Nomad and not I-pod. They laugh and tell me I do a better job advertising for Creative than Mac does for I-pod. I used hamster logic to con myself into spending the money for a Nomad when my last audio device died because I just about never go without headphones on. Peers from class and almost anywhere tell me they recognized me when I?m out doing errands because my player and headphones. My friends all joke about being a little worried when I stopped wearing my headphones, Nomad, and a lot have asked why. I will let them know if this is not solved. I accept that all my audio players eventually break, but 8 months or so for a 260 dollar player. My RCA Mp3 player lasted longer, was cheaper, and only broke because a friend living with me borrowed it and stepped on it. The reason my nomad is not working seems to be software related on top of things. It has its own protecti've case (Not the one sent with the player-a better one), the plastic film on the screen has never been removed. I take care of it. I would flip if anyone got so much as a finger print on it. My point is I'm a little shocked by its lifespan and the problems it'ss giving me. Other players seemed to keep having similar problems as I have read your forums.
<SPAN><SPAN> My player started with playlist transfer issues then stopped transferring Mp3's. After trying to attempt new transfers it started to take forever to turn on and off. It would rebuild its library quite frequently. I also noticed it was not keeping accurate information about how much hard dri've space it used. I do not have the internet on my home computer, the only computer the nomad ever connects to, and all my Mp3?s were created by your software from the original cd?s. The chances of a virus or corrupt file seem low though I am going to reformat my computer as it seems a little slower. I tried to reset my player, scan disk, erase my files, and just recently reload the OS. Funny thing is none of those things worked; however I have not finished with the OS reload because I cannot seem to get a copy of the OS. My first assumption was that a kind of BIOS would have a re-loadable version. The forums were vague on where the new OS would come from and certainly they would have an OS for it with the software they sent if not built in. Neither place has it. The internet where I have read vague advice for similar problems is where I have turned to next, and yet I can only find an update. I think that your web page is better built than most, but some of it could still use improvement. Your media software is awesome. I have wasted money on a few Mp3 softwares trying to promote memberships, sell higher versions of itself, and do everything but the reason I bought it for. I am pleased with your ripping software and player. The AOL promotion really drags down its style.
<SPAN><SPAN> I want Creative to redeem itself and customer care by showing me excellent customer service. Please help me get a new OS. I also recommend that you make downloadable backup copies available along with your updates if you do not start including them on your software package. I say this because if I could not get it to work after all the troubleshooting I have done I was going to use a Best Buy Warranty to purchase a new Nomad, but from all the forums and software hunting I?ve done, I find Creative inadequate in customer care, mainly the OS availability. I will not waste anymore time other than waiting for an OS. Meaning even if I can still get it shipped in I won?t. My bitterness is surfacing, but I still very much support Creative. I want to start promoting Creative again, but if left with a blank 260 dollar hard dri've I will use the Best Buy Warranty to get an I-Pod if not given a reason to maintain my strong faith in Creative ,and I will share my negati've experience with others. This is a warning and not a threat. You guys rock and don?t let me forget that!

60 gig ipod video won't turn off when i hold down play button...any suggestions, i already did all the resets and reloaded my music...

just to let you know, I had this same issue, combined with the fact that my ipod wouldn't automatically shut itself off either. I unplugged my ipod from the computer this morning and when I came back to it several hours later, it was still on. however, as things seem to go with me, when I try to duplicate the issue (tried to shut it off) it worked perfectly. go figure.

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 gig sound distort

I've had my mp3 player for about a year and haven't had any problems. But all of a sudden, the sound is weird and distorted. I've searched the forum and found very similar problems, but no solutions. Basically, you can hear the background music pretty well (although the volume is messed up), but foreground music and vocals are completely gone or completely distorted.
Same effect with all music, so it's not a problem with a particular mp3. And I tried different headphones -- same thing.
Some people have suggested, in response to similar problems, a firmware upgrade. So I'll try that. (Not hopeful though.) Any suggestions? This is seriously traumatizing. I've got 30 gigs of music on that thing.

Well, after reading the "headphone jack?" thread below, I think that's probably my problem, like so many other people. It seems like I was sold a defecti've product. And now I'm out of the warranty period. So that means, short of organizing a class action, there's nothing I can do, other than foot the bill for fixing a problem created by the company that sold me this product. There's something not right about that. Wish I could say I'm surprised. Goodbye, Creative.
