Zen Xtra and Win 7

I have recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7. I find that when I plug my Nomad Zen Xtra into the system, it is not recognized and I cannot sync my Zen with my Creative Media Source. Any suggestions. I cannot find new drivers for the Zen or upgrades. HELP. This has all our music on it and I need to get it transferred and back to work.

I found the same thing occured when I bought new notebook w/oem win 7. I don't have access to XP right now, so I can't do the firmware thing. However, I did have SOME success getting connectivity, and at least being able to play songs, and get them to my hardri've using Winamp, (v5.5.7.2830), nomad zen xtra 30g Firmware v .20.08, and NOMAD Jukebox Series USB Drivers v.30.03.00. I also have Adaptec StorPort Ultra320 SCSI Driver (X64), installed, although I'm not sure if that has an effect or not.
You'll notice that the zen firmware is an older version, I've been told that the older versions of FW have had some success with connecting to win 7, whereas in later versions it doesn't work as well. If you have a more recent FW and you feel like it might be causing a problem, try installing winamp in "compatability mode" for XP. Also try whatever you can to get devMgr to at least 'see' the player, as it will make it easier for your media program too.
The other program that I had even MORE success with was Media Monkey ( the free version). I've been able to download and upload some files, it's very slow, and doesn't ALWAYS work, but so far the best option. I really like media monkey, and appreciate the fact that you can run it WITHOUT skins (No Skins, No Problems!), I am considering getting pay version. Be sure to read directions, because the UI can look a little intimidating, but the help and instruction file that comes with is very informati've and easy to understand.
Also, I MYSELF have not had to install any "plays for sure" programs, and again it might be cuz of my fw version.
I've heard some people suggesting "Notmad" installer for this, but to my knowledge they don't have any win 7 compatible downloads.
Good luck, man. Let me know how it went.

• Windows XP driver problem - Nomad Zen Xtra and Zen To

I have both a Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB and a Zen Touch 20GB, both of which were working fine with my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer until a couple of days ago. I had recently put firmware 2.0.03 onto the Zen Xtra, and was using the drag-and-drop method in Windows Explorer to copy loads of albums across to it from my music folder. It seems I might have tried to copy too much over at one go, because eventually the file copying just stopped, and I had to unplug the Zen Xtra from the PC to abandon the copy process. Since then, neither Zen device has been properly recognised by any of my PCs. When I plug the Zen Xtra into?a USB port, Windows brings up the messages: "Found new hardware: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" and "Found new hardware: MTP device", then brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard, even though firmware 2.0.03 is supposed to provide "seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" (I have WMP0.00.00.4036 installed). The Zen Xtra's display does not show the "docked" icon except when plugged into my laptop (running XP Home Edition)... but even on the laptop Windows still asks for a driver, which it then fails to install properly. When I plug my Zen Touch into my PC, it detects that an MTP device has been connected, but Windows Media Player doesn't list it under the Sync tab, and when I try to install the "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative Zen Touch Players", the installer complains that "Setup could not detect any portable device on your system... please ensure that Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed". The device's firmware version is 2..0, and as I have already said, both this and the Zen Xtra were working fine with my PC up until a couple of days ago. Additionally, the "docked" icon?no longer appears?on the Zen Touch's display when plugged into the PC. I have made the registry change suggested in Creative Knowledge Base Solution ID #9287, and my PC is up-to-date with Windows Hotfixes. I've also tried uninstalling all Creative programs and reinstalling them one at a time, but I can not get my PC to correctly work with the Zen devices anymore. Any suggestions? Also, is there some kind of Factory Reset that I can do to get my Zen Xtra back to an earlier firmware?

I had the same issue. My battery ran down during a sync, then I was unable to sync again.
The Zen is showing up fine in the device manager, but none of the software (Media Player, MediaSource) sees it.
Finally, after a day of trying new drivers, running cleanup, etc. I decided to go into the Zen's recovery menu. To get there, press and hold the Play button and press and hold the reset (use a paperclip) button while powering up.
Once there, select the first option in the menu to Clean up the system. I forgot what it's called and I'm in the middle of a sync now, so can't look.
Worked fine after that. Phew!
If your device is being detected fine, but cannot sync, try that and post here if it fixes it.

is there any way to hook up my zen xtra to my PDA? The pda does have a PCMCIA Slot.Message Edited by mikeamabob on 03-7-2005 05:20 PM

No, not possible. Even if it could host a USB connection it would still need drivers to access it.

• Cases for the Zen Xtra and which online servi

I just bought a Zen Xtra 30 GB and would like to get some safe way of carrying it when I jog. Either a fanny pack or arm band. Has anyone seen these. If so where? Also what online services work with this device. I saw Napster works directly with the micro.

I've not seen either specifically for the Zen, but I'm sure you can get a generic belt based case from something like a camera shop. Or use a case e.g. Vaja, that has a belt connector.
Currently the Xtra will support any service that uses normal WMA DRM (or of course the very few that use MP3). It won't support PlayForSure (and Janus DRM) yet, but a new firmware is supposed to bring this. See the FAQ.

• Zen Sleek Photo, Zen Xtra, and Vi

I know I?ve posted about this before, but new folks visit here every day, and the information contained in these posts can get buried after just a few days. If the moderators wish, they can remove any earlier posts that I have put up here on this board.
This concerns problems with Vista and the Zen Sleek Photo mp3 player. The Zen software is not compatible and won?t install.
After receiving some information from ?Creative, and after some further experimenting on my own, I have put together a procedure that will, in fact, do a full install of the Zen Sleek Photo on a machine running Vista.
I have also discovered that this installation procedure also works for my Nomad Zen Xtra ? an unexpected bonus!
It worked for me, and I have received feedback from several dozen people already who have used this procedure with 00% success, so I know that it works!? I am currently getting three or four requests daily for this, and most have been kind enough to follow up and let me know that it solved their problem.
I will send this info, in Word document form, to anyone who requests it. Just email me at:

Dave, I tried to send email to ">[email protected]?but it's bouncing back. Can you pl post your correct ID? I'd like to get the procedure for Zen Sleek Photo Installation on Vista. Thanks?

• Zen Xtra and accessing subscription mu

I was very disappointed to learn that my Zen Xtra cannot access subscription music from services like Rhapsody and Yahoo Music Services because it does not support the proper license management for subscription services. Has anyone found another way around this besides waiting for their "Gee we don't know when we will support it" ridiculous answer that I got from them? These services are fantastic and, for a small amount of money, give enormous access to portable music. Help!!!
Steve Sankey

We are all very dissapointed, I'm a Zen Touch owner, and can't wait for the update, although I've been "can't waiting" for 7 months. The only solution at this time would be to buy a player from another manufacturer, for example the Dell DJ 20, even Toshiba which is known for their bad support has a 20GB PlaysForSure player.

• Firmware Update 2.10.03 for Zen Xtra and Yahoo! Music Unlimi

Right now I am having trouble with putting tracks on my Zen Xtra from a Yahoo! Music Unlimited account. I believed that Yahoo's music services were accepted by the Zen Xtras, but I'm not so sure now. I downloaded the latest firmware for my Xtra (2.0.03), and supposedly that is supposed to upgrade the player's Playforsure capabilities, including allowing it to accept subscription-based-tracks from music services. However, when I went to take the tracks from the Yahoo Music Jukebox it said that the device or the device firmware is "not subscription-music compatible". I went on Yahoo music's website and it said that Zen Xtra is one of the players that is supported but I was wondering if anyone else with an Xtra had any trouble with Yahoo's Music Unlimited. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

• "Unknown Artist" using Zen Xtra and WM

I have a Zen Xtra updated with the latest firmware and it is syncing fine with Windows Media Player on Windows XP SP2. The issue I am having is when I try to "sync from" my Zen Xtra back to my PC, all of the music gets placed into an "Unknown Artist" folder and then into a folder with the correct Album name within my "My Music" folder.
For Example:
When syncing "In Your Honor" by the Foo Fighters from my Zen to my PC I get this:
My Music\Unknown Artist\In Your Honor
All of the music is tagged with the correct Title, Artist, Album, and Genre information.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I think you can already do this with the ipod. I was looking at Belkins website and found a device you plug compact flash cards into, and which then plugs into your ipod. Transfers all you piccies.
Since the micro (and i guess other h.dri've players) can store data then it should really be a case of some simple software and a memory card reader.
This facility on the Micro, for me, would be almost as useful as having music to listen to.
Creative must be aware of this as the new colour screen photo micro is coming out this year sometime. Lets hope a media card reader adaptor will also be available.
Cheers.

• Need help with Zen Micro and Win

Hi,
I bought a Zen Micro 2 days ago and I can't get it to work with my Win XP machine.
I did what was told in the manual: install the software first then plug the player.
When I plug the player in I get the following message:
Found New Hardware:
Zen Micro
According to the manual, it should be detected and the drivers installed automatically.
But it dosen't. Instead I get the Wizard that try to find the drivers and it dosen't find them.
I let the battery get a full charge and I tried again. Same results.
I tried to update the firmware but since the player is not detected that didn't work.
I also tried to get the new MediaSource/Zen driver (ZENM_PCAPP_LB_4_00_8_PDE.exe) but that didn't fix my problem either.
I also tried to install the Creative Zen Micro Driver version .27.02 but it tell me that I can't install it because the user I tried to install it with is not an administrator. But this is not true since there is only one user on this machine and it's the administrator. First software that tell me this.
I'm using XP Home with SP2.
Thanks for the help.

SSR wrote:
The reason it won't install is because the drivers aren't installed.
I've seen a very few others with this strange error about administrati've pri'veleges, so I'm wondering if it's a Windows issue here. You could try downloading the drivers from to see if this is any different.
Try creating another administrator account and see if it will install from that, and try searching back (perhaps someone had found a solution). I think there's also a way of running a program with forced pri'veleges, perhaps Google can turn something up on that.
I remember one user needs to change some rights of the registry in order to install the software. It looks like under some cases, the login account does not have sufficient rights to write registry.

• Zen Xtra: Upgrading Win 2000 - Vi

I've had an Xtra for three years now, no problems at all. I've just got a new laptop running Vista, and want to get them talking to each other.
From searching round here, it appears:
- To use Vista, I need Plays4Sure firmware on my Xtra (despite all the problems people have been having with it, so fingers crossed)
- I can't update the firmware with my Vista machine, because it doesn't recognise it
- I can't update the firmware with my old machine, because that runs Win 2000, and the P4S firmware isn't available for that OS
Any idea how I can update the firmware so that I can start using Vista?

bigstug,
In order to update the PlayForSure firmware for the player, you have to look for a computer loaded with XP plus service pack 2 and Windows Media Player 0. Load the player driver in the XP computer before you proceed with the firmware update.

• A problem with my Creative Zen Xtra and Mediasou

When I play music off of my Zen on my computer through Mediasource, sometimes Mediasource will close down out of nowhere and will not reopen unless I restart my computer. I have the most updated version of the Zen's driver and everything.
Does anyone know what could be going on here and if so, how do I fix this issue?
Thanks.

Someone has to know! Enlighten me! Haha.

• Nomad jukebox zen xtra and windows vi

Help. I just bought a new computer, old one died. The new computer has windows vista and windows media player installed. i cannot get my player to work, it is not recognized, and the original software keeps getting shut down by windows. Can anyone tell me if there are updates and in what order I need to due them in. I have looked all over the creative web site and can't seem to find the correct solution. I also tried contacting tech support via email and they don't want to help since the player is out of warranty and just said to go to the web site, which of course I already tried, with no luck.

I am going to call a friend tomorrow who may still have xp. i'd like to know if i should and can it be done and if so how. To back up the original fimware that is on the player. and how would I reinstall it after if I needed too. i read through the link you provided a lot of good info but also seems a little like a could be in for a rough ride. Basically i should be able to upgrade the firmware and then the player will be recognized in vista. is that correct?as long as the computer I use has xp and windows media player 0.
?I like media source organizer but as long as I can transfer songs to the player I'll be happy. I can easily li've without media source organizer.

• NOMAD Zen Xtra and MediaSource Playb

I've been trying to play music, through MediaSource on my PC, from my NOMAD. It shows that the song is "playing" but I hear absolutely nothing.
I can hear music from any other folder I have on the PC itself, but if I try to use the NOMAD, I get silence even though it says the song is playing.
What am I doing wrong? Or is there another way I can hear the music from the player through my PC?
I'm going overseas to Diego Garcia soon and it's really important to me to be able to do this. I don't want to lose, break, or damage any of my rare or hard to come by CDs and was hoping to just load them onto the NOMAD and be able to listen to them from my computer once there. Is this possible?
I'd hate to have to give up on Creative and have to go get an iPod :/

You are not wrong; at least you plugged it into a USB port.
There was once when I plugged my USB mouse into the network port of my notebook PC and was wondering why the mouse failed to work.

• ZEN XTRA and car ster

Anyone know if there is a product out there that will play this mp3 player, except the FM transmitter? Car Kit of some sort?Any help would be appreciated...
cheers!!

Have been researching this for myself - not recommending this vendor at all just found they had the best explanations, which I pasted below
http://www.logjamelectronics.com/piechry02aux.html
The PIE CHRY02-AUX Auxiliary Input Converter connects to the CD changer data port of your factory radio to create an external auxiliary input that has a pair of left and right RCA audio inputs. With this converter installed, you can connect any external audio device that has an audio output directly to your factory radio without using an FM modulator and hear the audio from your factory sound system.
You can also convert the RCA inputs to a 3.5mm input by adding the PIE 3.5-RCA6MM. This converter allows you to connect any device that has a 3.5mm jack such as an iPod, a Discman, an MP3 player, a walkman, or any auxiliary audio source.
