Zen Xtra failed to reboot during firmware upgr

I attempted to upgrade the firmware on my Zen Xtra to Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03. Everything appeared to be functioning correctly until it came the time to reboot the device. The player turned off but then never turned back on. I tried to manually turn the player on but nothing. I now can't turn the player on at all and I fear I have a doorstop. I can't reach the maintenance menu either. Hopefully someone has an idea. Thanks.Message Edited by trip42 on 02-20-200607:59 AM

Your problem was that your computer was not properly prepared for the firmware update. This is something you could of prepared for if Creative did a scan of your computer before you attempted to do the firmware update. A scan would of revealed several flaws. But since Creative does not do this they leave it in the hands of the person doing the update to prepare a computer which they have no idea how to prepare because they have never done a firmware update.
There is little hope that you can fix your Xtra now that the firmware update was not completed.
But to properly prepare your computer requires you to install some hotfixes and make some minor changes to some settings on your computer.
The hotfixes are these:
Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/8922
DRM performance fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902344
Fix for large data transfers:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/89536
And the minor changes are all done in this file. Its unfortunate that Creative doesn't do a scan to properly check computers that they do support PlaysForSure..... But you know its not Creative's fault entirely. Those hotfixes are offered via Windows Update as Optional downloads, and in most cases the hotfixes solve alot of problems. Also Service Pack 2 solves even more problems with USB devices than SP. So you can't really put the blame on one company/person...

  • Zen Xtra 30 GB: slow since firmware upgr

I own a Zen Xtra 30 GB MP3 player, and right off the bat, I admit I upgraded the ifrmware without removing the old firmware.
Ever since doing this, my player has been slow on connecting via USB. I rebooted into rescue mode, removed the OS, and reinstalled the latest firmware upgrade (.20.08 I believe).
My Zen Xtra still takes forever to connect via USB, and that's even if it does connect at all.
Any ideas where I should go on this one...

If you get help then you should see it as a bonus and be grateful - not expect help and moan when you don't get it.
I had the same problem on my Open Uni'versity forum in the UK - other students expected help from everybody else on the course and then gave us a slagging when we didn't give it!

  • Zen Xtra fails PlaysForSure Firmware update - Now it won't install a firmw

Zen Xtra 40 - Was upgrading from .30 firmware to 2.0.03 to support WMP and VistaFirmware Upgrade to Failed to Complete
Downloaded and ran PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03
It identified my Zen Xtra and started the upgrade, Zen Xtra rebooted and just sat there. 2 hours later I disconnected Zen Xtra and its in Recovery Menu. Reboot says Firmware Problem and goes to the recovery menu again.
If I plug it back into my system it says it found a 20mb 'Portable Device' MTP and lets me open the device but nothing is on the 20mb partition.
If I run PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 again it says I must plug in the device, even though its definitely plugged in and recognized as an MTP device.
Seems like the PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 isn't designed to identify the device after a partial upgrade? Tried older .30 Firmware install program, it can't identify the device either. Device shows up in Device Manager as Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra using a Microsoft Driver.
I've installed the latest JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US_2_0_00.exe drivers and it does not help. Device still detects as a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. If I uninstall Windows Media Player it won't install any drivers and won't accept the PCW Driver either.
Where can I get a firmware updater that will function when my Zen Xtra wants to be an MTP device?I tried another computer with WM9, just PCWDRV 2.0 drivers, and it will not detect and install the drivers when I plug the device in. Says it can't find suiteable drivers for this device.
    Tried Cleanup, Reload OS, Reboot.
Boot v.4 and HW v0.0. Any ideas?

Wow after searching hundreds of documents on this forum I got my firmware updated
!!! I took my notebook, which I had recently upgraded from WMP9 to WMP after I could not get it to recognize and upgrade my Zen. I uninstalled WMPI uninstalled WMP RuntimeRebootedI went to Microsoft and get WMP0 specificallyInstalled it and closed itI ran the ZenXtraPS4Audible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exeOn the Zen I selected Reload OS, I click to have it reload OS, while it was doing that I plugged it into the notebook. The Firmware Tool Detected the Device again!!Current version 2.0.03Upgrade will be 2.0.03I click Upgrade!?It upgraded this time!!?The bummer is ALL MY MUSIC is wiped off my device. I didn't format it, but I guess the upgrade does it for you. Which means I just lost hundreds of dollars worth of songs since WMP doesn't have a license transfer and all my music was on the ZEN. So even though I have the files on my computer, they won't play because I don't have the license any longer.

  • Zen Xtra won't connect for Firmware Install. WMP Rolled back to v

My Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra would not load firmware from it's hard dri've. It only entered into a cycle of displaying the 'Creative' then 'EAX' screens. I Downloaded the latest version of firmware 'ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03' and installed it following the instructions on the Creative website.
The install started initially but then failed because either the software installing the firmware, or the zen xtra, locked up. I left it for nearly an hour and had no choice but to cancel and try again.
Since this time I have been unable to load any version of firmware to the zen xtra. The installer says that the zen is not connected even though it is. When I do connect it, the 'autoplay' dialog appear asking me what to do. So, the computer recognises the device as 'NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra' but the firmware installer will not recognise it at all.
I have carried out a 'Reload OS' in preparation for new firmware. I have also carried out a 'Format All' and 'Clean Up' from the Recovery Menu that the zen xtra is now stuck in. All appears to be fine with the Zen's hard dri've as, on completion of the format, the hard dri'ves shows 'Freespace 3833.7MB'.
I have looked on this discussion forum and FAQ and this appears to be a common problem but have found no solutions. I have tried uninstalling Windows Mediaplayer and rolled back to v0 and reinstalling drivers and MediaSource software but problem persists. Please help.

    OK. Sorted it! Try this!
    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9829
Turns out you have to uninstall Windows Media Player Runtime v as well as WMP itself.
Also, if you have the problem with reduced HDD space because of installing PlayForSure firmware, you could install a bigger hard dri've. They are the generic 2.5 inch hard dri'ves fitted in Laptop Computers! My 40Gb Zex Xtra now has the 80Gb HDD I removed from my VAIO! And it was easier to do on the Zen than it was on the VAIO!

  • Zen Xtra doesnt charge, reboot l

Hi, I recently bought Creative Zen Xtra 40 GB player and im having difficulities charging it. When I bought this player it didnt have a charger but instead it had a USB cable that has two ends. One end is for data transfer and the other one is for charging, this way I can only charge the player while it is connected to PC. But that is not the problem. The problem is when I have my battery empty I plug it in for charging, the player turns itself on, the hard dri've starts to spin, but then during the EAX screen the player turns off and the hard dri've stops, but then starts rebooting again going into some sort of neverending reboot loop. I have charged It succesfully several times, but the lenght of the looping depends on how drained the battery is. My guess is that when the battery is fully drained it is too weak to fully boot the player so it stops the booting process and tries again and again. I would be very grateful for some useful answers, and if someone else has encountered with this problem, please post you thoughts or solutions.

The re boot loop usualy happens when the battery is too low, you should use a normal mains charger for teh Zen xtra as USB from a P.C does not provide enough power.
As with all lithium ion batteries such as those used in the Zen its best not to let them go completly flat, and keep them topped up.

  • 3.4 gig Free on my Zen Xtra 60gig and this wonderful firmware won't allow anymore transf

I am beginning to really hate Creative and how they choose Microsoft over their loyal customers. I cannot transfer anymore music to my ZenXtra 60 even though I have 3.4 gig free. I keep getting error messages saying library is full or I get just an error message. I bought this player to fill up 60 gig's not just under 60 gigs. Is this company for real? It took me close to 3 weeks to transfer to this player what normally would of taken up to 4 days. I HATE THIS FIRMWARE I HATE THIS FIRMWARE. Anyone know what's going on?

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 30GB- tried to upgrade firmware. Process hung, now nothing wo

This is really frustrating. I know my MP3 player is old, but it was working. Trying to find all the information I needed to have to upgrade this player so that it would work with Windows Vista was difficult. It wasn't all in the same place. I just kept searching and finally found what I thought was everything I needed. I tried to upgrade the firmware to Version 2.0.03 so I could use it with a Windows Vista computer. The process "hung" and now nothing works. I've tried to reinstall the .20.08 firmware, but the computer won't recognize that the player is connected. How can I get any firmware reloaded so I can try to upgrade again or at least still use the player on a Windows XP machine Thanks,

The same exact thing happened to me yesterday with my Zen Touch 40 GB player. It was working fine, now after my firmware upgrade attempt it's unrecognized by the PC and has no firmware installed but appears to be stuck in "Recovery Mode". There is obviously something wrong with the Creative Firmware update - this should be a very straightforward process, but instead it seems to be wrecking mp3 players. I contacted customer support and they offered to sell me assistance since my player is ancient (2 years old).

  • Windows XP driver problem - Nomad Zen Xtra and Zen To

I have both a Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB and a Zen Touch 20GB, both of which were working fine with my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer until a couple of days ago. I had recently put firmware 2.0.03 onto the Zen Xtra, and was using the drag-and-drop method in Windows Explorer to copy loads of albums across to it from my music folder. It seems I might have tried to copy too much over at one go, because eventually the file copying just stopped, and I had to unplug the Zen Xtra from the PC to abandon the copy process. Since then, neither Zen device has been properly recognised by any of my PCs. When I plug the Zen Xtra into?a USB port, Windows brings up the messages: "Found new hardware: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" and "Found new hardware: MTP device", then brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard, even though firmware 2.0.03 is supposed to provide "seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" (I have WMP0.00.00.4036 installed). The Zen Xtra's display does not show the "docked" icon except when plugged into my laptop (running XP Home Edition)... but even on the laptop Windows still asks for a driver, which it then fails to install properly. When I plug my Zen Touch into my PC, it detects that an MTP device has been connected, but Windows Media Player doesn't list it under the Sync tab, and when I try to install the "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative Zen Touch Players", the installer complains that "Setup could not detect any portable device on your system... please ensure that Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed". The device's firmware version is 2..0, and as I have already said, both this and the Zen Xtra were working fine with my PC up until a couple of days ago. Additionally, the "docked" icon?no longer appears?on the Zen Touch's display when plugged into the PC. I have made the registry change suggested in Creative Knowledge Base Solution ID #9287, and my PC is up-to-date with Windows Hotfixes. I've also tried uninstalling all Creative programs and reinstalling them one at a time, but I can not get my PC to correctly work with the Zen devices anymore. Any suggestions? Also, is there some kind of Factory Reset that I can do to get my Zen Xtra back to an earlier firmware?

I had the same issue. My battery ran down during a sync, then I was unable to sync again.
The Zen is showing up fine in the device manager, but none of the software (Media Player, MediaSource) sees it.
Finally, after a day of trying new drivers, running cleanup, etc. I decided to go into the Zen's recovery menu. To get there, press and hold the Play button and press and hold the reset (use a paperclip) button while powering up.
Once there, select the first option in the menu to Clean up the system. I forgot what it's called and I'm in the middle of a sync now, so can't look.
    Worked fine after that. Phew!
If your device is being detected fine, but cannot sync, try that and post here if it fixes it.

  • 30 GB Zen Xtra freezing up whenever I use the rewind but

I have the 30 GB Zen Xtra (w/ all the latest firmware upgrades) that has several quirky problems such as pressing in on the scroller to make a selection sometimes acting like the play pause button. I have since learned this is a problem I may have to li've with. The most recent problem is when I try to use the rewind button to either start a track over again or to rewind within a track, the player goes into shutdown mode and all buttons stop responding. Furthermore, the player does not actually shut down it just freezes up with the shutdown screen displayed. Of course, I have to reset it to make it operational again. I have tried disk cleanup and then rebooting but the problem persists. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same but it seems that changing the "play mode" from "Normal" to "Shuffle" does mine in,(now it seems as if any use of controls causes freeze ups)then the only way out if you find your self with out a small object is to remove the battery.
I have ran scan disk,I have removed all files and reloaded them,I am next going to check my mp3's for corruption and fix them or not load them up and see if this persists.
As a note i had the Zen for over a month where it performed flawlessly with the same files loaded before it started doing this. It's very frustrating as it happens all the time now unless I start play and don't touch any controls.

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra sound prob

Hi, I've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra for more than 2 years and have had little problems with it. However, now I cannot get any sound out of the left speaker of any type of speaker/earphones I plug into the audiojack. This is not a speaker/earphone problem, they work with any audio equipment. I can get sound out of both left and right speakers/phones if I plug the jack only 80% into the audiojack. But if I plug the jack all the way into the player, only the right speaker/phone works. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

  • Zen Xtra problem with latest firmw

Hi everyone. I've tried searching for this but I can't find the answer.
I've recently upgraded my Zen Xtra 60gb to the latest firmware on the Creative Labs downloads page (2.0.03). Re-copied all my music back onto it and some of the albums which were fine before now play out of order.
All my music is correctly tagged with track number information and when I view the files using the new Zen Explorer addin the tracks are all present with the track number prefixed by the filename. But on some albums when I right click and choose properties there is no track number stored.
How can I fix this? Is it the way I transfered my music onto the player (I just copied the folders using explorer to the 'My Music' folder on the Zen)? Or is this a 'feature' designed to get me to change my mp3 player?

I'm not sure why some files lost thier tag info. But I'll tell you this, adding tag information through Media Scource does not wirte to the actual file.
And when you export files from Media Source, you have configure it a certain way to add the tag info to the files while its exporting.
Zen Explorer may be the sameway, so check that.
Theres a program called Tag&Rename, it can correctly Tag mp3 in batch. I think the free version is like a 4 or 30 trial but it should be long enough just to get your job done.

  • "Unknown Artist" using Zen Xtra and WM

I have a Zen Xtra updated with the latest firmware and it is syncing fine with Windows Media Player on Windows XP SP2. The issue I am having is when I try to "sync from" my Zen Xtra back to my PC, all of the music gets placed into an "Unknown Artist" folder and then into a folder with the correct Album name within my "My Music" folder.
    For Example:
When syncing "In Your Honor" by the Foo Fighters from my Zen to my PC I get this:
    My Music\Unknown Artist\In Your Honor
All of the music is tagged with the correct Title, Artist, Album, and Genre information.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I think you can already do this with the ipod. I was looking at Belkins website and found a device you plug compact flash cards into, and which then plugs into your ipod. Transfers all you piccies.
Since the micro (and i guess other h.dri've players) can store data then it should really be a case of some simple software and a memory card reader.
This facility on the Micro, for me, would be almost as useful as having music to listen to.
Creative must be aware of this as the new colour screen photo micro is coming out this year sometime. Lets hope a media card reader adaptor will also be available.
    Cheers.

I hope you are still here Grommit.
The reason why the new Creative Software Suite will not install is because the firmware you have is not the version the suite is looking for.
If you want to install the new Suite, you will have to update to the PlaysForSure firmware (2.0.03, I believe). However, if you do this, be aware that you will also have to download and install the latest Zen Driver, Creative MediaSource, and Zen Plugin for the MediaSource (all available in the download section) - also, once you start the firmware update on the Zen Xtra, you WILL NOT be able to revert back to a previous version of the firmware, and the drivers and programs on the install CD will not function with the new player at all.
Unless you use a subscription service with DRM mp3s, or have had issues with Playback Errors in certain mp3s, there is very little immediate need to upgrade.

  • Jukebox Zen XTRA Firmware update fail

I have a nomad jukebox zen XTRA 40GB. I recently saw an update for PlayforSure on the creative website. As i have done earlier, i had tried updating the firmware. It asked me to backup and run the formware. I sincerely backed up and started the firmware. This went for about a minute and said its rebooting the player which never happened for a nice hour. Now the firmware is not completed and when i try to reload os from the recovery options, the firmware update program says palyer is not connected. I had verified it in DEvice manager. The player is been seen as Nomad Jukebox/ MTP device. I tried starting the player and it says "Firmware Problem". i also tried loading the original firmware which says "Player not connected". I had updated latest driver.
    Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to know is there anyway Creative has to redo the whole thing. Like removing all of the firmware and rebuild it. I am looking for some tool or some way to remove the incomplete firmware on the player.
Rightnow, my player is just a paper weight for me. I dont want to be used like this..
