Zen Xtra freezes in rescue m

there has probably been a post about this before but there are too many to llok through. I just got my player (Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 GB) and i went to start it up one day and it stayed at EAX screen for awhile then went into sage mode. From safe mode i tried Clean Up- didn't do anything, Format All-says "harddisk problem", Reload OS-"harddisk problem, and Reboot, this reboots to same rescue mode. I try plugging it into computer but says "player not connected". Also, if i shake it, i hear rattling from inside(dont know if its bad), probably shouldn't shake it but im trying everything! I never dropped it or anything like that(may have verbally abused it though)Message Edited by parcia64 on 0-03-2005 0:59 PM

Hmmm. . . It seems that there's an epidemic! I had to perform rescue mode on my 30 GB Xtra yesterday, (Thanks again, SSR!) and noticed it was a bit sluggish this morning. That's when I decided to perform another cleanup. Bad idea. The cleanup froze at 98%. After staring at it awhile, I decided to press reset.
This time, the opening EAS screen appeared, followed by the re-building library screen, which remained for at least an hour (Hey, I only have roughly 200 songs that I managed to salvage yesterday. It can't take that long!)
I couldn't figure out a way to turn the darned thing off, so I just let it idle away. When I returned roughly an hour later, the device had finally turned itself off. It boots up properly now, but I'm a bit hesitant to invest any more time in adding files until I'm a bit more confident of its stability.
After reading some of these postings, I'm tempted to return the device, but here's my dilemma: I purchased it from Buy.com and it came with a rebate offer. I've already cut the UPC and sent it in with my receipt to Stillwater (Home of my alma mater, OSU).
I'm now in the process of recharging the unit so I can attempt reloading the firmware. I must say that I'm getting frustrated: First, I spent several days transferring hundreds of files from iTunes to the MediaSource Organizer, only to have roughly half of them disappear, and now I'm having to wrestle with the player yet again. Sigh. I'm hoping I can actually start enjoying this player soon!
I doubt Buy.com will accept a return sans a UPC on the back, and I'm not sure I have another copy of the receipt. I'd really like to get this unit repaired or replaced, but I want to make sure I've explored all avenues first. Is a reload my best option, or should I try something else? (Fortunately, mine doesn't rattle when I pick it up. . . )

Can anyone help me?
A week ago when I was deleting some songs from my playlist (using MediaSource) my Zen Xtra froze up and then my playlists were lost. I have reset my Zen, reloaded the MediaSource software, updated the software and tried various other solutions but I still can't seem to create Playlists or work with my music files without my Zen freezing up.
Fortunately, my music library is still in tact - but I would really like to be able to organize my files without having it freeze up.
If there's anyone who can help with some suggestions - I'd really appreciate it.

This should only be done as a last resort. The originator of the post ought to read the FAQ before resorting to this.
p.s. - learn to spell rescue mode if you're going to make a big deal about that thing that didn't work either.
It might not work for you, but stalling at EAX without error is very often cured by a disk cleanup. Also, I believe Jason works in the Asia support team, so English is presumably not his first language. Plus I know plenty of people who do have English as a first language and still can't spell or use grammar correctly. Basically, have some manners.

• Frozen Zen Xtra - Questions re: Rescue M

I've got a 40 gb Zen Xtra that's about nine months old. Purchased in the U.S. so the warranty is over. Anyway, it got a little bit wet yesterday and is now freezing when I try to start it. I've hit the reset and now it goes into Rescue Mode when I turn it on. I've got two questions.
When I select Clean Up I'm given the option for "Disk Cleanup will be performed. Continue?". I click the check mark, but then nothing happens. How do I know if the cleanup is being performed? Is it supposed to let me know that it's currently running? I waited over half an hour and nothing happened.
I've tried rebooting a few times and it just brings me back to Rescue Mode.
When I click "Reload OS", I get the "OS will be erased. Upload it via USB. Continue?". I click the check mark and I get the Harddisk Problem icon. Does "Upload it via USB" mean that I have to have the player connected to my computer?
I guess my last resort is to "Format All" but I really don't want to have to re-load 40 gbs worth of mp3s organized in playlists. Of course, there's a good chance that the whole player is shot. Argh.

I would double check this. It was around the time of the Xtra that the warranties increased to year (3 months parts and labour, followed by 9 months parts only).

I believe it will give a scanning bar, and a percentage completion. Normally after you reboot it will then rebuild the library also. So the fact that you're getting nothing is a worry...

Yes, you erase the firmware from the player itself, connect it to the PC, then run the firmware install from the PC.
The hard disk problem error is another concern. This suggests something is awry with the player.
Whenever a device like this gets wet it's a good idea to immediately remove the battery and leave it somewhere warm and dry for several days.

• Zen Xtra Freezing

I have a 30 GB, Zen Xtra. The battery ran down, and now when I plug in the charger it starts up and freezes up on the EAX screen. Would really appreciate any ideas.
Thanks, Mike

Try a disk cleanup. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.

• 30 GB Zen Xtra freezing up whenever I use the rewind but

I have the 30 GB Zen Xtra (w/ all the latest firmware upgrades) that has several quirky problems such as pressing in on the scroller to make a selection sometimes acting like the play pause button. I have since learned this is a problem I may have to li've with. The most recent problem is when I try to use the rewind button to either start a track over again or to rewind within a track, the player goes into shutdown mode and all buttons stop responding. Furthermore, the player does not actually shut down it just freezes up with the shutdown screen displayed. Of course, I have to reset it to make it operational again. I have tried disk cleanup and then rebooting but the problem persists. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same but it seems that changing the "play mode" from "Normal" to "Shuffle" does mine in,(now it seems as if any use of controls causes freeze ups)then the only way out if you find your self with out a small object is to remove the battery.
I have ran scan disk,I have removed all files and reloaded them,I am next going to check my mp3's for corruption and fix them or not load them up and see if this persists.
As a note i had the Zen for over a month where it performed flawlessly with the same files loaded before it started doing this. It's very frustrating as it happens all the time now unless I start play and don't touch any controls.

• Zen Xtra Freezes When Load

When I select "Organize Media" and then "Music" it always stays still at that part. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything and pushing the reset button on my Zen Xtra.

Please refrain from using bad language on these forums, we have people of all ages reading.
See how you get on with the reset SSR mentioned. It may also be worth formatting the player, and putting a freshly ripped album on it to see if it behaves the same. You may have some corrupt files on the player that are causing problems.

This ones really got me stumped. I've had this Zen for a couple of years now and it has served me well. I updated the firmware to the latest version for driverless support (A warning about WMP on the download page would be VERY HELPFUL guys, I went through the 'firmware nightmare' like so many others). Anyways the machine worked great for a week or two with WMP . Now when I plug it in the player powers up like it's supposed to, but XP freezes solid. No way out of it, I have to physically shut the machine off, which is not cool. I've tried it with the player on, off, with and without WMP running but I get the same result. Uninstalled the entire USB system through the device manager also (nothing). Like I said before the player ran fine for a couple of weeks. I think Microsoft put out a security update during that time period, but I'm just grasping a straws for a reason. The machine is fully up to date in all areas (SP2, drivers, updates, etc.). Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Reset the player and hold down the play button. It will go to a recover screen and then clean up the disk. That fixed it when I had the problem. Don't use the other functions unless you have to as it will erase your dri've.

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - cannot install firmware - PC says device "not connected&qu

Hi everyone,?Below is a message I've just sent to Customer Support, but I thought I'd also post it here in case anyone has any words of wisdom. Thanks in advance for your help. -- - Dear Madam or Sir,?Yesterday, I tried to connect my Zen Xtra to my PC to transfer some songs from Windows Media Player . WMP produced an error message stating that my PC had a driver for my Zen Xtra which is not supported by WMP. [This was the first time I had tried to Sync my Zen Xtra with WMP.]?I visited www.creative.com and tried to install the latest firmware for my Zen Xtra. The installation of the firmware froze and remained frozen for over an hour. Now the only thing that my Zen Xtra displays is Rescue Mode v.3. I cannot install any firmware at the moment, because the installation wizard keeps stating that my Zen Xtra is not connected to my PC. However, it IS connected and Windows XP detects it up as a "portable storage device." I have completely uninstalled all Creative products on my PC and reinstalled them using my original installation CD, but this has not helped matters. I cannot find any helpful articles in your Knowledge Base. I would be very grateful if you could provide some assistance in this matter. I have had several years of excellent usage from my Zen Xtra and I am extremely annoyed by this latest development. Not only did the firmware upgrade process require me to delete all the data on my Zen Xtra, but now I seem to have a device which is not functioning at all. Many thanks.

I've received a reply from Creative [see below] which is, frankly, a bit insulting, because it suggests that they never even read my original message to them. Needless to say, I haven't been able to solve the problem. I've written back to them and told them that I'd appreciate further assistance. To top it all off,?I can't even format the Zen Xtra so that I can simply use it as an external hard dri've. Does ANYONE have any advice on this matter? I am having the same problem. Seems like to me creative and many of these other companies leave it for people like ya'll to figure out what is wrong with their OWN product LOL? I am having the same exact problem with my 30gb. Guess I will try what you guys and gals said to do and if no luck then would someone please let me know when there is a class action:smileyvery-happy:? I think it's about time companies became more responsible for their actions. Thank you all for figuring it out. I hope this works for mine. I think you all should send Creative a bill for figuring out their problem. I certainly will NEVER buy another Creative product again. i-Pod here i come

• Nomad Zen Xtra - 60G - Major Issues

I bought the Zen Xtra for my husband for his b-day last April (2004). Over the summer the Zen Xtra worked well and transfer of 307 tracks of songs was successful. Then, in the fall we decided to try setting up playlists through the Creative MediaSource software. Since then we have had numerous problems with the machine. First of all, when trying to create a playlist, the Xtra froze. We've since gone through the motions of (a) upgrading all the software/firmware we could and (b) rebooted and done a disk cleanup.
Unfortunately this has NOT solved our problem. Yes - we are now able to use the Zen Xtra for listening to the tracks we already have on the machine, but everytime we connect it to the computer and try to either add new tracks, (We aren't even able to do an AudioSync! The error we get is :"Unable to read file. File may be in use, missing or corrupted". Of course this is not the case because we are able to listen to the song from the Zen Xtra.) listen to a track (through the xtra on the computer), (the error we get here is : "Unable to playback current track. The audo device may not be available or the file may be missing or corruped.") or try to create a playlist (The error here is: The operation failed. Ensure player is properly connected before trying again.")
In each of these cases, the Zen Xtra freezes up and we have to go through the whole process again just to get the stupid thing to play songs so we can listen to them. We are very disappointed that we are not able to use the Zen Xtra to its full capablities. What are we missing? How can we get it to work as it's is supposed to through the software on the computer?

Thanks Cat for the info. I've managed to get all my files from the Xtra over to my PC.
I am still experiencing the following by the Zen Xtra:
A) if the machine is shut off for longer than a day, it takes from 25-30mins to turn on. It gets "stuck" at the EAX screen
B) I am still unable to create a playlist on through the Media Centre. Everytime I try, it says that the Zen Xtra is not connected and then my Zen gets "stuck" forcing me to do a manual reboot of it.
I believe this to be a software problem, but that's not to say that I'm not totally disappointed that I'm unable to use my Zen to its full potential. (And manually rebooting and/or waiting for 25-30min to listen to my Zen isn't fun either.) Does this SOUND like a simple software issue or is it more? (Remember my warranty will run out soon)
If it IS a software issue is there any OTHER software out there that I would be able to use to appreciate my Zen to its fullest?
Thanks again.J
