Zen Xtra froze..stuck in Rescue M

I was playing a song, and my mpe player started skipping and finally froze. So I tried to reboot it, but it wouldn't shut off. So I took the battery out and it rebooted. But now, I can't get passed the Rescue Mode screen (v.3). I tried "Clean Up", but it doesn't do anything. I am unable to upgrade firmware. So what can I do?
its a Zen Xtra 30GB. I've only had it a few months, and use it once every few days. I only have a few GB's of music on it. and this is the first time I've ever had a problem with it.
any help would be great.

You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net at your OWN RISK. If you don't want to try this or are under warranty then contact Creative Support.
If you aren't under warranty you can contact Creative Support to see if they will repair it. If you want to try repairing it yourself, taking the risk the hard disk is at fault, then you can follow Rudi Cheow's excellent guide. There's also a thread here at the Zen Nomadness.net forum on compatible dri'ves, and the last page of Rudi's guide also has information on this.

  • ZEN Xtra - Getting out of Rescue M

I just got my Zen Xtra a week ago and today I had a problem with it freezing up, so, I took the action I had taken previously when it happened and removed the battery. Now everytime I load the player it comes up in Rescue Mode. I tried cleaning up, but how do I get out of Rescue Mode. Even when I reboot it comes back up in Rescue mode.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

If you don't want to try this, or it doesn't help, and assuming you're under warranty contact Creative Support.
If not under warranty you can consider replacing the hard disk (although you take a risk that this is the problem) or get Creative Support to repair it at a cost.

  • Creative Zen Xtra 40gb locked in Rescue M

I am having trouble with my Zen Xtra. When I turn it on it goes into recovery mode and I can't get it out. I have tried a reboot and a cleanup, but they are not working. I have also tried a reload but when I select any of the option they don't actually do anything. I can charge the player when I plug it to the main power, and have tried taking out the battery for a ew hours and replacing it. This is not working as every time I turn the player on it goes straight back to rescue mode.
    Can anybody help?

All you can do is run through the advice in the section "My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" of the FAQ. If functions in rescue mode don't work then the player is faulty unfortunately, and you need to contact support.

  • Zen Xtra powers up to Rescue Mode? Data Recovery Possib

Is there anyway that Data Recovery could be used to get all the music i have off my Zen Xtra? Anyone know if Creative will fix it...or possibly be done by a 3rd party repair place. Any at all help/info in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Jeremy,
Thanks for responding. I had already tried another USB port on my computer. After posting to this forum I remembered that I could restore my computer back to an earlier date. This did the trick. Everything seems to be working fine now. I suspect the problem had to do with a mal-functioning USB rather than with Zen Xtra or related software. Too bad I didn't think of the solution earlier as I spent all morning uninstalling and installing the hardware and all the software :

  • Creative Zen XTRA - Stuff stuck behind the scr

I know this is a stupid problem but some crap has got stuck between the screen and when i removed all the screws at the front to try and get inside I couldn't. How the hell can I get this stuff out from behind the screen. Any ideas?

this discussion went around a few weeks ago, i think someone suggested possibly blasting some of that compressed air stuff in there to see if that does the trick. (but be careful cause you could introduce more dust or possibly moisture into it so it may not be a good idea). i don't know how the dust gets in there except that there must be a leak somewhere, but i've seen other things that had that. i had a digital camera (one of those HP pieces of junk) that got some dust in behind the lens (how can THAT happen) and there's no way to get in there to get it out. i'd imagine if it was REAL bad you might be able to get creative to fix it for you but it may fall under one of those "cosmetic" type clauses that gets them out of it, don't know but it's worth asking.

  • My Zen Xtra fr

My Zen Xtra froze in the middle of uploading music to it. None of the buttons work, and I can't even turn it off (to access Rescue Mode, or download the new firmware). If I press Reset, will it erase everything on its hard dri've? I've never had this problem before.
    Thanks in advance.

My Xtra has hung during file transfer and the most common explanation has been buggy music files. Re-ripping the file from the source solves the problem. However, I encountered many similar hangings and crashes when using Nomad Explorer to transfer files, and this resulted in my uninstalling Nomad Explorer from my computer. Creative MediaSource operates well and reliably and is what I presently use.

    Can anyone help me?
A week ago when I was deleting some songs from my playlist (using MediaSource) my Zen Xtra froze up and then my playlists were lost. I have reset my Zen, reloaded the MediaSource software, updated the software and tried various other solutions but I still can't seem to create Playlists or work with my music files without my Zen freezing up.
Fortunately, my music library is still in tact - but I would really like to be able to organize my files without having it freeze up.
If there's anyone who can help with some suggestions - I'd really appreciate it.

It might not work for you, but stalling at EAX without error is very often cured by a disk cleanup. • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - Fro

Please help me save my Zen Xrtra!
I previously updated the firmware on my Zen Xtra to version 2.0.03 so that it would be recognized by my new computer which is running Vista. All went well and I was able to sync the Zen Xtra with all my music without a problem.
The other day when I ran the sync again in order to update the Zen Xtra with some new music all seemed to go fine until I disconnected the player from the computer. Upon doing this the Zen Xtra froze up. It now won't bootup. It gets to the "EAX" screen and just sits there. I tried reconnecting it to the computer but the computer no longer recogizes the player.
I figured I'd have to update the firmware again. So I went to another computer running XP with Windows Media Player 0 on it because that's how I did it before. However, this computer didn't recognized the Zen Xtra either.
I paid way too much money for this 40GB Zen Xtra to trash it. Can someone PLEASE help me get it working again.

<SPAN class=postbody>I have Zen Xtra 60Gb I was transferring music and then it said it couldn't transfer the track or the following track and so on. The menu on the Zen Xtra froze. I waited for a while but I got impatient I just pulled the battery out and put it back in to restart the player. Since then I have had nothing but issues. . Zen Xtra is connected via USB, computer makes the sound to show a USB device has been connected but the computer does do not see the device. 2. I have performed the scan disk, re-loaded the OS with the latest firmware and also re-formatted the unit. Somehow on Wednesday night I go the unit back in working order and then last night exactly the same thing happened again - I was transferring music and then it said it couldn't transfer the track or the following track etc... I did a all the same again to try and resolve the issue (except I didn't pull out the battery!) I am currently getting a firmware error. Any ideas?

  • [Zen Xtra] Stuck in Recovery Mode after updating Hard Dr

This is a long post, but I thank you in advance if you read it and think you have any ideas for me. Parts of this post were originally posted on the Nomadness.net forums and parts of it come from my personal email correspondence with one of the experienced users on that site.
    Here goes:
I just installed a new HD on my Jukebox, and now I am unable to get it to download the Firmware (current or otherwise) and it remains in a state of rescue mode.
Here is how I posted my dilemma on the nomadness.net forums:
My computer is running Windows XP. I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB that I have had for about 2 years, and have had no problems with it, using it at least 8 hours/day 5 days/week (I run it at my desk while I work). I mention that just to give you an idea of how much regular continuous use it has been getting, if that matters. I have regularly downloaded all the latest appropriate firmware, etc. from the Creative website, using the auto updater service. I have one other Creative product connected to this computer, a SoundBlaster Audigy. This will come up again in a minute.
Over time I have accumulated so much new music that I knew I had to either get a new Jukebox or upgrade the HD. Since the Xtra is no longer available new, and upgraded ones are SO expensi've on eBay, I thought I would install a new HD myself. I read the instructions posted here on nomadness.net, and purchased an 80 GB 5400 RPM Momentus 5400.3 Ultra ATA/00 Internal Hard Dri've (that's Seagate).
Ok, now. The installation went easily enough, but now I cannot get the Firmware to reload. My computer recognizes that the unit is connected - it makes the appropriate sound when I connect or disconnect the JB, and under My Computer, there is the icon for the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra, under the "Other" category.
When I installed the HD and powered up, I got the rescue menu as expected and started with the "FORMAT ALL". I got the confirmation that it was reformatted and the expected GB of memory showed as available. SO...then I went to "RELOAD OS" and selected the "yes" option to verify that I wanted to reload via USB --BUT-- it only showed the "Start Firmware Update Now" for a second and then went right back to the menu. I have tried using the reset, and every combination of unplugging, replugging, removing the battery, putting it back in, reformatting, etc. and nothing changes. It just goes right back to the rescue menu every time.
I have the Firmware files (old and new) saved on my computer's HD, but when I try to launch any one of them, I get the same annoying message: "Your player is not connected, please connect your player". Well, if the computer thinks it's connected, then why doesn't the firmware file? I don't get it.
If I go back to the Creative auto updater on the website, it still recognizes the SB Audigy being connected, but no longer recognizes the JB.
How can I get the Firmware into the JB if I can't get it to recognize the player being connected? And why is that my computer shows it, if the Firmware file itself doesn't see it's
I received only one response that suggested I check the instructions on the Nomadness FAQs and also the great upgrade guide by Mr. Cheow, also on Nomadness.net.
    This was my follow-up post:
Since I posted this earlier today, I have tried everything, and I mean everything, suggested by all of these "guides" to upgrading a hard dri've.
The problem remains that my computer recognizes the Jukebox as a portable device that is connected, but I am unable to get the Firmware file to load because it always says that my device is not connected. It should also be noted that the Nomad Explorer and other applications also will not recognize it (Notmad, JBHTTP, etc.)
Furthermore, I will add that we have two of the exact same model Jukeboxes and two of the same Dell computers running XP, etc. and in every possible combination we have tried, my Jukebox, with the new HD is the one that can not be accessed. So, I know that the connections, drivers, ports, etc. are not defecti've. The only thing that has changed since this morning is that I installed the new HD in my Jukebox.
I would love for any of you who have done this kind of upgrade to offer suggestions, as I am willing to try anything at this point.
After my last post, as a last ditch effort, my boyfriend suggested swapping the hard dri'ves in my Jukebox and his, thinking that perhaps we could get the firmware to download into his, and then switch the hard dri'ves back. Well, it looked as though it was going to work, and then the firmware update stopped almost as soon as it started and so, we are back to the same impasse. It?s the strangest thing, considering that both of us have been using our respecti've JBs daily, and have had no other problems? until I tried this.
We both racked our brains trying to think of a way we could get the firmware from the computer into the jukebox since it won?t load as long as it doesn?t recognize the player. Is there any workaround for this? By that I mean, is there any way at all to get the firmware into the Jukebox with out just launching it as a self-executing file? I know you can't just ?put? the file into the Jukebox, but is there any other means to extract it into the Jukebox so that I can use it's?
Any help you can offer would be most appreciated. I am worried that I have ruined my Jukebox and wasted $75 on a HD that I can never use?.
***Note on the Hard Dri've I chose:
I specifically chose this HD based on information posted by others on Nomadness
In particular, the newer instructions for upgrading a Zen Xtra hard dri've that were posted by an individual who used a 5400 for his own upgrade. I even emailed him with questions before I went ahead with this HD. As someone who has done this before, he felt that since this HD fits the specs of size and type being used by others doing this type of upgrade, including his own, that it would be fine. I honestly don?t think that it is the HD itself.
Since trying the swapping of HDs and Jukeboxes last night, we now have not one, but two, that are stuck in recovery mode and flash ?Firmware Problem? when rebooted. I don?t see how the HD itself could have done this. In fact, I am certain that the HD did not ?cause? the problem.
I have been reading forums about Jukeboxes (including here), anything I can find, looking for possible solutions. I have discovered that there are many people out there with the same dilemma, even those who simply updated their Firmware and nothing else, but now are stuck in the same frustrating place that I am.
***Note on the versions of the Firmware Update files I have tried:
I was going to use the newest one, but then after reading comments on Nomadness, I decided to try the older version that everyone was saying was less problematic. (see below) One of the posters had provided a link to it, and I copied it from there. I also had two other newer versions of the Firmware Update, including the newest one that has supposedly caused all the problems for others, but none of them would launch anyway ? I just kept getting that same message saying that the ?player is not connected?. Actually, to be more accurate, as I think I described in my original post on Nomadness, when I first tried to upload the firmware, it seemed as though it was going to go through with it, but never got further than one segment on the file progress display. On the screen of the player, it said it was upgrading, but after a few hours, it had gone nowhere.

Amazing that someone noticed this post and took a stab at it after over a year... Actually, I found my answer long ago, and have tried to go back and post?it'son several boards where I had been looking for the answer. It seems to be such a common problem that I figure someone else can surely use this solution as I did. I would suggest that anyone?who is experiencing the frustration of not?getting their computer to recognize their device?read the very enlightening and helpful page that I am linking to here:
http://www.misticri'ver.net/forums/showthread.php?t=30939? (this is from a forum for iRi'ver, but the info and fix are uni'versal)
This simple solution involves correcting the ENUM keys in the Registry (not as scary as you might think) and deleting all instances of your player from the Device Manager and then reinstalling so that Windows and other applications will all recognize your player again. It's so simple, and once I tried it, I was amazed that's all it took to fix the problem.
?I?suggest you read the whole page and follow the instructions as they are given. I deleted and re-installed my player several times and then rebooted a couple of times before it took effect, but then it did, and I was able to download the Firmware and have had continued success with my original player that I posted about as well as others I have acquired since I first posted that message in 2006. For reasons I have not yet identified, this problem still happens every now and again, sometimes when I switch between players to synchronize. It may well be that when I use my registry cleaner or some other utility that "fixes" my registry, that it resets this particular key - but as long as it's easy to fix, it's not a problem. Hope this helps others who may stumble upon this odd little problem with the Zen Xtra.Message Edited by TrixieInDixie on -05-200709:28 PM

  • Zen Xtra freezes in rescue m

there has probably been a post about this before but there are too many to llok through. I just got my player (Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 GB) and i went to start it up one day and it stayed at EAX screen for awhile then went into sage mode. From safe mode i tried Clean Up- didn't do anything, Format All-says "harddisk problem", Reload OS-"harddisk problem, and Reboot, this reboots to same rescue mode. I try plugging it into computer but says "player not connected". Also, if i shake it, i hear rattling from inside(dont know if its bad), probably shouldn't shake it but im trying everything! I never dropped it or anything like that(may have verbally abused it though)Message Edited by parcia64 on 0-03-2005 0:59 PM

Hmmm. . . It seems that there's an epidemic! I had to perform rescue mode on my 30 GB Xtra yesterday, (Thanks again, SSR!) and noticed it was a bit sluggish this morning. That's when I decided to perform another cleanup. Bad idea. The cleanup froze at 98%. After staring at it awhile, I decided to press reset.
This time, the opening EAS screen appeared, followed by the re-building library screen, which remained for at least an hour (Hey, I only have roughly 200 songs that I managed to salvage yesterday. It can't take that long!)
I couldn't figure out a way to turn the darned thing off, so I just let it idle away. When I returned roughly an hour later, the device had finally turned itself off. It boots up properly now, but I'm a bit hesitant to invest any more time in adding files until I'm a bit more confident of its stability.
After reading some of these postings, I'm tempted to return the device, but here's my dilemma: I purchased it from Buy.com and it came with a rebate offer. I've already cut the UPC and sent it in with my receipt to Stillwater (Home of my alma mater, OSU).
I'm now in the process of recharging the unit so I can attempt reloading the firmware. I must say that I'm getting frustrated: First, I spent several days transferring hundreds of files from iTunes to the MediaSource Organizer, only to have roughly half of them disappear, and now I'm having to wrestle with the player yet again. Sigh. I'm hoping I can actually start enjoying this player soon!
I doubt Buy.com will accept a return sans a UPC on the back, and I'm not sure I have another copy of the receipt. I'd really like to get this unit repaired or replaced, but I want to make sure I've explored all avenues first. Is a reload my best option, or should I try something else? (Fortunately, mine doesn't rattle when I pick it up. . . )

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra in Rescue M

    Well, it happened....
I dropped my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra today. When I turned it off and turned it on again, it went into rescue mode and is offering me 4 options:
    . Clean Up
    2. Format All
    3. Reload OS
    4. Reboot
I have tried reboot but it returns to rescue mode.
I tried connecting it to Creative Media Source Organiser but get a meesage saying the play isn't connected.
I am nervous about trying any of the other options for fear of losing everything I have saved on the player. Can anyone suggest the right option to take without endangering my saved files, or should I take to be repaired? It is still under guarantee.

That sounds like a complete failure. My first one had a hard dri've error and had to be replaced. Fourtunately it was still under waranty, but its so old yours isn't anymore, is it's Sorry, but it sounds like a complete loss. Could get Creative to try to repair it for you or find a friend who knows electronics and get them to replace the hard dri've for you. Its old enough that if you can find the replacement hard dri've it shouldn't cost alot.
