Zen Xtra MP3 Quality Cha

I have a Zen Xtra 40gb. I use the MediaSource software to rip CDs to my computer and the Zen Xtra.
I rip the CDs to MP3s at 00% quality and variable bitrate. My Xtra has about 6500 tracks on it with less than gb left in memory.
I would like to keep the files saved on my PC to stay at the highest quality as a backup to my CD library. If I clear my Zen, is there a way to retransfer the files at a lower quality to save memory and get more tracks on it's
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Why pay for something when WMP can do it for free?
Perhaps because it has more functionality, as already stated. Can WMP convert from Ogg or other lossless formats? Can WMP convert to formats other than WMA?
In the "fine print" for MediaSource's conversion note that it's only when converting WAV tracks.
WMP can convert to MP3, but it either doesn't use the LAME codec or makes it confusing to download, so I usually stick with dbPowerAmp or Audiograbber (both freeware, to my knowledge) if I'm ripping to MP3.

When I plug my Zen in to charge, it doesn't charge. There's an icon of a plug on the lower left corner and I can play music and everything but the battery isn't charging. Anyone know what's wrong with it's

    Zen Xtra 40 GB

presently sitting on top of my PC charging ( battery fully charged, 2 more to go)
From your description of the issue, the player doesn't recognize the presence of your battery. When I remove my battery, the plug icon appears and stays, indicating that the player is running off of the adaptor. Thus, your player is telling you that you have no battery to charge.
There could be numerous explanations, but the most likely problem is that you have a dead battery; this can be tested by substituting another battery (which you're going to need sooner or later, anyway). Next after that is defecti've firmware, which can be tested by reloading from the PC (not merely re-booting I'm afraid). Next after that is soiled or non-conducting battery leads; check your battery leads to make sure that there can be good electrical contact to the player. Next after that is bent or broken leads in the battery compartment, which should be readily observable; bent leads that are no longer in good electrical contact with the battery can be GENTLY bent outward to properly contact the battery; .5mm is sufficient. The final and least likely explanation is leads that are detached from the PC board. Verification of this requires disassembly of the player, something I do not recommend to anyone.
Reload your firmware. Check your battery connections. If you know somebody with a similar player, swap batteries with them. I bought 3 long-duration batteries on eBay for a very reasonable price. Batteries bought directly from Creative are expensi've, but given the unit's criticality (is that a word) to the player function, I would not say that it is unreasonable. Good luck.Message Edited by Etherdave on 0-22-2005 09:2 PM

  • HELP: Nomad Zen Xtra: MP3 filename

I don't have any sort of ID3 tags on my MP3s. I have them all sorted by filename. For example "ACDC - Back in Black.mp3". I really want to use this player but it's kind of troubling for me to not be able to just drag and drop my mp3s into the player and have them be there to be played as is(according to filenames). Is there any programs out there that allows me to not use ID3 tags for everything and instead sort by folders and filenames?
I honestly don't understand why something that costs so much money(meaning this mp3 player) to develop would not be designed with simple logic and usability in mind such as dragging and dropping folders etc...
A reply would be most helpful, thanks.

Nope, no way to do it. You *can* get MP3 tagging programs that will use your filename and folder data to create the tag, so I think this is the best place to start.

It actually works VERY well with tag data. Once people are used to it they tend to see why it works this way. If it's a real problem then buy an iRi'ver or Archos player which work the other way.

  • MediaSource 5 isn't recognizing my Zen Xtra pla

    Hi,
I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra mp3 player, version .03.02. I've had it since July of 2003.
I recently bought a new computer (Dell Inspiron 520; Windows XP Home Edition). My old computer had Creative Organizer software on it. I no longer have (or more accurately, I can no longer find) any CDs that would allow me to install that software onto my new computer.
When I first plugged my mp3 player into my new computer, the computer didn't recognize the hardware. I went to the Creative support site and downloaded this driver ( JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US_2_0_00.EXE ). Installing that allowed the computer to recognize the player. I then tried to transfer music from my computer to the player with Windows Media Player 0 (my preference is to avoid upgrading to WMP , if possible). The computer *did* recognize the player and I was able to move music over, but when I unplugged the player to view the new files I had placed there, I wasn't able to find them on the player (I think they *are* there somewhere, but I can't seem to find where the Windows Media Player put them).
Therefore, I went back to the Creative support site and downloaded and installed the Creative MediaSource 5 software ( CMS5_PCAPP_LB_5_0_38.exe ), but when I open up Creative MediaSource 5 and click on "Transfer Music," I get a pop-up box saying that there isn't any mp3 player plugged into the system, so it can't transfer anything. It gives me that box no matter how many times I unplug and re-plug in the player to my computer.
At this point, I'd prefer to transfer my music to my player via the MediaSource software, since I have a feeling it will be more user-friendly for me. However, any advice that will help me with transferring music to my player and allowing me to find it easily on the player will be most appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
If you have not already, please make sure that you have the correct plugin installed. Check the firmware version of your Zen Xtra and go back to the download page where you downloaded MediaSource 5.
If you have the PlaysForSure firmware in your player, download and install this:
Creative PlaysForSure Devices Plugin 5.00.36 for Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer 27.90 MB
    CMS5_MTP_PCAPP_LB_5_00_36.exe
    Otherwise, download and install this:
Creative ZEN and NOMAD Jukebox Plugin 5.00.22 for Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer 6.24 MB
    CMS5_NJB2_PCAPP_LB_5_00_22.exe
    Hope this hel

  • Zen Xtra Media Explorer questions..H

I have a Zen Xtra mp3 player, and as of right now I use the Zen Xtra Media Explorer to import media and rip cds and what not. The question I have is, why I cant put folders into other folders. Sometimes the folder of a cd wont go into the folder of the artist which has other cds. I want to make everythin neater, and combine folders so its all artist folders containin the folders of the cds. On my mp3 player it always comes up right and organized. Its just in the 'organize media' option that its like that. And yes all the ID tags and all of that are the same. I dont know what to do, of if i need another program or somethin. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello- I'm trying to install a Creative Zen Xtra mp3 player on Windows XP. • Safing the files from Zen xtra

    Hello,
my Zen Xtra mp3-player starts only in the rescue mode.
    The following happened:
The mp3 player was no longer recognized by Windows XP. I have therefore extended the HDD and plugged directly to a PC. The file format has been designated as unknown. I have copied the files from the disk with Ontrack. I then safely removed the HDD and replugged into the mp3 player.
problem : I can not open the saved files.
problem 2: Now start the mp3-player only in rescue mode.
On the HDD I have nothing deleted or changed.
    My Question is:
Is it possible to restore the files from mp3-player back somehow?
    Thank you very much,
    longhan

Maybe you are not understanding this. The file system is unique to the Zen Xtra. The only way it can be read is on a dri've that is INSIDE the player loaded with the same firmware as when you transfered them. Then you transfer them back on to the player. Like I said I don't know if it will work since I have not done it. If the dri've is bad you will have to install a working one anyway. You have already copied the files from it. If it is still good formatting>cleanup>rebooting will be the only way to attempt to get it working without changing it out.So you won't be losing anything. It will work or it won't.

  • Windows 7 Support Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra

I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 player. The hard dri've crashed on my old computer ( which used the wiindows XP operating system). I bought a laptop which uses Windows 7. I don't seem to be able to find a way to access the MP3 player with the windows 7 computer. I don't need?a lot of functionality. I would be happy to put tags on MP3 files with some other software, if only there was a way to get this laptop to talk to the MP3 player. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ed

If you can find a PC running Windows XP with Windows Media Player 0 installed you can install the?Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 - this will turn the player into an MTP device so you will not need to install any special drivers/software to copy music or other files to it (as long as the computer has Windows Media Player 0 or later installed - so Vista or 7 will be fine, as will up-to-date versions of XP).
I could not get the firmware installer to work with Windows Media Player installed on XP (it claims the player is not plugged in) but Windows Media Player 0 works reliably. As Windows Vista comes with WMP and Windows 7 with WMP 2 you'll need to find an XP machine to install the firmware, though once installed you can use the player with any modern OS.
As I run Vista on my PC I had to resort to installing XP in VirtualBox to run the firmware installer but I would strongly recommend trying to find a real PC before resorting to emulators!
Edit: If possible, back up your files before updating the firmware - if I remember correctly updating to the PlaysForSure firmware does delete all of your existing files, but even if I haven't remembered correctly it's worth doing just in case..!

  • Zen Xtra - low bitrate MP3s sound terri

I download a lot of mp3 speeches, lectures, etc. - i.e., all spoken word stuff (as opposed to music). Many of these files are fairly low bitrate (6KBS) in order to minimize space and make the downloads go faster.
These low bitrate mp3s play/sound fine when I play them on my computer (remember, we're talking spoken word, not music - I know 6KBS is too low for music to sound good). But, while they sound ok when played on my computer (in Windows Media Player), they sound like crap when I play them on my Zen Xtra (really slow and slurred speech, etc.)
The problem is not my car cassette adaptor since the same thing happens when I use headphones.
Is there anything I can do? I've never upgrade the firmware - might that help?
Or, would re-encoding these at a higher bitrate help - recognizing that I don't have anything better to start with than the 6KBS file I started with?

Thanks for the good and prompt response. If I may follow up?
I never installed CMS - did it come with my Zen Xtra? To install it now, do I need either to buy it or to find my original CD (which may be hard) or can I download and install it free from the support website as a Zen Xtra owner?
I do have Windows Media Player and MusicMatch Jukebox Deluxe - will either of those do what CMS does?
CMS would have come with the player on the installation CD but you can download it from the website. When you install it you need to install the drivers first, then connect your player so that when CMS installs it will see that you have a device that entitles you to load the program. Then load the Zen Xtra plugin for CMS.
You can convert the files with WMP when you sync the files to your player - in the Sync settings there is a quality tab and you can choose to convert the files before transferring. I think it will only convert to WMAs though. If you have Copy Protect switched on in the WMP settings then the files will have DRM applied.

  • Latest Zen Xtra Firmware Makes MP3s Without Full Tags Worthless

I recently loaded my Zen Xtra with the latest firmware and after two days of troubleshooting found that it now refuses to play MP3s with less than full tags using the "Play Any Track" mode which since I have over 000 songs is the only way to go... All my MP3s are tagged simply with Artist - Song and I never put any of the extra junk like Genre or Album names in. I had to add dummy info just to get the Xtra to recognize these MP3s... I'm using WMP since?the NOMAD Explorer no longer works.Message Edited by stevcoll on 2-2-200609:27 AM

You won't believe but I had the same problem just couple of days ago with the same player (but 40 gigs). I was confused just like you, so I tried to format the disk again (while connected to PC) and reloaded the OS. Then a message appeared like 'Now you can update your firmware' or something like that, so I ran the firmware from PC, and no message about a battery level appeared, and the firmware was updated correctly. Try it, and let me know if it's OK! Good luck!

  • My Zen Xtra 40GB mp3 player was dead with no reason

I bought this mp3 player(Zen Xtra 40GB?last year, it worked brilliant for 3 months, after that, I went back to my country for 3 months, when I came back in Oct, I could only switch it on, and after welcome screen, it pop up an reset back stage list for just half sec, then turn to welcome screen again... I took it inside my house(I was using it as my in-car media center) decide to check it out. after few days, it just went dead. no matter press any bottom, or even charging, there is no signs at all... is there any of you have the same problem before? is there any solutions that I could self-repair it's?I am afraid it has ran out its warranty. Are there any third party resellers that are able?to repair it's or it has to be return to Creative support/repairing depot?also how much is it'sgonna charge me for repairing by Creative??Please help me... I love this Creative mp3 player, don't want it just dead like this!!

I dont know maybe your hard dri've died, Try if its possible to update the firmware or reformating to see if it fixes. If anything call Creative if you really like your player you can buy another one or get it fized. Sorry sucks to lose a good MP3 player. I also heard that you should have your device on HOLD to prevent damage I really dont understand why but maybe it will halpe you in the future

  • Software Autoupdate and Creative Zen Xtra 30GB Mp3 Pla

    Hi,
I recieved a replacement for my Zen Xtra which broke under warranty (very unimpressed with Creative at the moment) and since the scroll wheel wasn't working properly I installed the latest firmware and now that's OK.
However while using the Software Autoupdate to do this I also installed the latest of all the other software for the mp3 player. Since this I haven't been able to use my DVD player at all (It's still installed but doesn't notice any disks) - the two are DEFINATELY related since it stopped working virtually as the software installed. Everything I could download there (Mediasource etc) installed except for the Jukebox drivers which give an error.
The other problem is that although I've been able to uninstall all the other stuff Mediasource is still installed and is stuck that way - "An installation support file could not be installed. The system could not find the file specified." - looks like Creative haven't updated their uninstall program for the new version of Mediasource to me.
I've emailed Creative technical support but I wondered if anyone here'd had the same problem and is there any way to fix it without formatting? (It'll be impossible to format and reinstall XP without a working DVD dri've...).
Could anyone link me some sort of iso/bin/etc of the CD that comes with the player itself? I might be able to install that with Daemon Tools and then see if I can persuade it to uninstall itself then.
    Any ideas?

Anecdotally they will honour the warranty of the country you purchased in, so 90 days parts and labour for the USA, and you might get another 9 months parts only...
