Zen Xtra no longer recognised by sys

Player: Zen Xtra (30GB)
firmware version: .20.08
I installed the software for my zen from the cd, then I upgraded my software from the CD versions to the following versions, and my player is no longer recognised.
These are the files I installed:
Media Source - CMS_PCAPP_LB_3_30_2.exe
Jukebox driver - JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US__30_03.EXE
Zen Plugin - CMS_PJB3_PCApp_LB_2_00_9.exe
I've connected the same player to other computers and have no problems, and my USB ports all work fine with my USB keyboard and mouse.
The only thing I can think of is that i've run windows update (this is a new PC), and might that have installed some conflicting files/drivers?
Any ideas?

Plugged a thumbdri've in after that, and got the same message so I thought the USB ports were ruined or something. But after a while, the thumbdri've is ok, but PC still would not recognise my Zen.
The Zen also freezes when the USB cable is plugged in. I had to do a soft reset by poking a straightened paper clip into the reset hole.
What do I do now?
Does the Zen Xtra work fine when NOT connected to the PC?
Also, if you have another USB cable, you might want to try it.

• Creative Zen Xtra No Longer Visi

Hello,
I have had my Zen Xtra 40 gb for about 3 years now and I loved it. The problem is now, windows will no longer even recognize the device is connected, nor will the player recognize that it is connected via USB. The problem occured when I was cleaninng out the hard dri've to make room for new songs. I left the player alone and when I returned, I saw that the player had been disconnected from the computer, but the cord was still attached on both ends. I restarted my computer, restarted and rebooted my player, used different USB cables and plugs with no luck. I even thought it was my computer and tried another USB device, but it worked with no problem.
I have looked through the forums and tried everything I saw about making my player "MTP" but I cannot update the firmware because it will not recognize the connection. I have reinstalled Mediasource as well as the new drivers to see if that helped to no avail. The player is not listed in the device manager, nor do I think it ever was, but I could be mistaken, I just don't remember.
I just really want this to work again. This would be the third problem in 3 years. Creative was very nice about getting my problems fixed before, but now that my warranty is up, I am out of options. If I would have known I would have had these problems, I would have bought the extended warranty, I just didn't expect this.
Thank you very much in advance.

• Zen Xtra no longer remembers where I left off in a tr

Hi,
I downloaded and installed the most recent drivers and firmware for my Zen Xtra, and now it doesn't remember where I left off in a track. I listen to long audiobooks in my car so this is very important.
I used to be able to power down and then when I came back to my car I could just turn it back on and pick up where I left off. Now it always goes back to where I left off many sessions ago, no matter how much I have played since then. In one particular audio book it always goes back to 2:59:0 or something, which is where I left off many many sessions ago.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
chris.

Both my 1st and 3rd generation models still work with resume, as does my 2nd generation models.
You are not on your own though, as others have reported similar issues. As yet I haven't seen a solution, but wonder what happens if you hold down the centre button and mark the movie as watched or unwatched and then try again.

• Nomad Zen Extra no longer recognised by P

For some strange reason after installing all the updates from the creative website my player will no longer be recognised by my pc.
This means I can no longer upload any tracks to it.
When i connect the usb cable I get the noise like it is connecting but nothing happens.
Anyone know a solution as it is driving me mad.......
Mailed creative support but that may take too long, anyone ?

Updating all the drivers seemed to cause the problem, got this message back from creative.
To access the Rescue Menu of your Zen, please proceed as follows:. Turn off the Zen.2. Hold down the Play/Pause button and insert a paper clip into the reset hole.3. Remove the paper clip and release the Play/Pause button and the Jukebox Zen now will boot in to Rescue Mode. The Rescue Mode options are: - Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the player's hard disk. Clean Up will not remove any files from the player) - Format All (Formats the player's hard disk - Note: ALL CONTENS OF THEMP3 PLAYER WILL BE LOST!!) - Reload OS (Reloads the Firmware on the Jukeobox Zen. Note: Before selecting this option make sure you have downloaded a new firmware for the player, as this option erases the current firmware on the device andthe player won't work without the firmware loaded on it). - Reboot (Select the Reboot option once you have completed the recovery operations, in order to restart your player)You can download the firmware for the option "Reload Firmware" from here:http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/downloadsPlease select the "Clean Up", the "Format All" and afterward select "Reload OS" and ensure that you have the Zen connected to the PC for the"Reload OS" option.Does that solve the issue?
The answer is NO.

• Can no longer access the files on my Zen Xtra. Help, plea

I've been using my 60gb zen xtra for over a year now without problems (except for having to replace it twice due to the faulty headphone jacks), but after recently losing one of my hard-dri'ves, I decided to install Creative Mediasource so that I could easily copy all the music on my player to a new hard-dri've. Up until now I'd never used Mediasource - just the regular nomad explorer browser. After I installed Mediasource and rebooted, I can no longer get to the files on the Zen. I know they're still there - I can still play them on the player itself, and I can even access the player - when I click on the Nomad Explorer icon in "my computer" I get into the explorer and the player reacts by going into transfer mode, only when I go into "music library" everything is blank, and when I go into the data library it says 'not connected', even though it's able to show me that I only have 45 gb free, which is accurate. I'm not saying that Mediasource caused this, because I don't know, but I'm desperate to get my music back - having both the hard-dri've fail me and then the player itself would be a catastrophe for me. Any general help, whether with mediasource problems or just general problems accessing the music library would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks!

Geez, what an embarassment. Found all my files right were they were supposed to be. Uh, all's well that ends well? Again, sorry for cluttering up the board.

• WMP and Mediasource will not recognise Zen Xtra with Playsfors

?I, like many people apparently, have been attempting to sync my Creative Labs 40GB Zen Xtra (firmware 2.0.03 - Playsforsure enabled) ) with my music files on my computer using either WMP0, or Mediasource with the Playsforsure Plugin installed. Even Explorer would be cool- but nothing recognises it.
?The problem I am having is that when I plug in the Zen, windows recognises the player as "MTP Media Player" and offers to start WMP for me, but when I get into WMP it doesnt see the Zen. The device shows in Device Manager under "Windows Portable Devices/NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra" but nothing else on the system recognises it- not Explorer, not WMP, now Mediasource with the Plugin. ?I have attempted to run "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra Players" but unfortunately everytime I try it says it cannot detect the player and will not install- It?says[color="#ff0000"]"Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. [color="#ff0000"]Setup will now install the necessary drivers to enable your device to be detected."
After?installing the correct driver itself it comes back and asks me to plug in the device and when I do and click next it says
[color="#ff0000"]"Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. [color="#ff0000"]Please ensure your portable device is connected and switched on.[color="#ff0000"]?[color="#ff0000"]If your player is not enabled with Microsoft's PlaysForSure,[color="#ff0000"]please ensure that Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed before running this Setup program."? The correct firmware IS installed according to the "about" screen on the player itself.
I have gone thru the steps to edit the permissions in the registry under "enum/usb" as suggested in another thread by Daniel-CL, and still this does not fix it. Then as suggested by [color="#ff6633">SSR, I?tried reinstalling MediaSource first, followed by the Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra Players.
(Still wouldnt let me install it)?
Oh, and I tried hooking it into my XBox 360, which Microsoft says will recognise a PlaysForSure enabled Zen Xtra. It wont recognise it either. So basically the player just sits in Device Manager and taunts me. It's there. It pops up when I plug it in. When I try to run a program that should recognise it, the little arrows on the player even light up for a moment to show communication with the program. But alas... nothing. I'm going crazy here.Did I miss something?

I had a similar problem with my Zen Touch, but the only symptom was not being able to install MediaSource or the Software Suite. I got the same messages that you did. I was able to use Windows Explorer to add/edit/remove files, but I wanted the Zen Media Explorer so that I could create playlists. After about 2 days of research and trial and error, I ended up fixing it by uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers.
If you don't know how to do that, here are instructions...
I'm using XP SP2, btw, so if you're using another version of Windows, it might be slightly different...
) With the Zen connected, Right-click on "My Computer"
2) Select "Properties"
3) Click on the "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager"
4) Right Click on "MTP Device" (or MTP Media Player) and select "Uninstall"
5) Disconnect the player from the computer, wait about 5 secs, and reconnect.
When you reconnect it, the drivers will be reinstalled. Try running the setup again after that.
If that still doesn't work, look for random optional Windows updates, maybe?...esp. PlaysForSure, WMP, or USB/mobo/INF/Chipset driver updates...or maybe when it says "Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. Setup will now install the necessary drivers to enable your device to be detected," it actually is doing something, but it isn't apparent until you reinstall the driver. To be honest, I just don't know. The computer I'm using is only a few months old and I didn't have any problems installing on an older computer.
Oh well. I hope that fixes your problem.
As far as the problem with the 360 connectivity, I'm sorry I can't help you there.Message Edited by potestasx on -03-2006:28 PM

• Zen Xtra 30 Gig - No longer possible to shuffle within playlists after latest firmware upd

Not sure if anyone else has had this problem. After surviving the Windows Media Player /firmware update nightmare, my Zen Xtra 30 gig now will not shuffle within a playlist. Instead, when I select a playlist in shuffle mode, it shuffles through ALL the playlists. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks!

Same here! Are they going to fix this, or is there a workaround? I was thinking about killing it and going back to the older software...

• Windows XP driver problem - Nomad Zen Xtra and Zen To

I have both a Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB and a Zen Touch 20GB, both of which were working fine with my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer until a couple of days ago. I had recently put firmware 2.0.03 onto the Zen Xtra, and was using the drag-and-drop method in Windows Explorer to copy loads of albums across to it from my music folder. It seems I might have tried to copy too much over at one go, because eventually the file copying just stopped, and I had to unplug the Zen Xtra from the PC to abandon the copy process. Since then, neither Zen device has been properly recognised by any of my PCs. When I plug the Zen Xtra into?a USB port, Windows brings up the messages: "Found new hardware: Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra" and "Found new hardware: MTP device", then brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard, even though firmware 2.0.03 is supposed to provide "seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" (I have WMP0.00.00.4036 installed). The Zen Xtra's display does not show the "docked" icon except when plugged into my laptop (running XP Home Edition)... but even on the laptop Windows still asks for a driver, which it then fails to install properly. When I plug my Zen Touch into my PC, it detects that an MTP device has been connected, but Windows Media Player doesn't list it under the Sync tab, and when I try to install the "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative Zen Touch Players", the installer complains that "Setup could not detect any portable device on your system... please ensure that Zen Touch PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed". The device's firmware version is 2..0, and as I have already said, both this and the Zen Xtra were working fine with my PC up until a couple of days ago. Additionally, the "docked" icon?no longer appears?on the Zen Touch's display when plugged into the PC. I have made the registry change suggested in Creative Knowledge Base Solution ID #9287, and my PC is up-to-date with Windows Hotfixes. I've also tried uninstalling all Creative programs and reinstalling them one at a time, but I can not get my PC to correctly work with the Zen devices anymore. Any suggestions? Also, is there some kind of Factory Reset that I can do to get my Zen Xtra back to an earlier firmware?

I had the same issue. My battery ran down during a sync, then I was unable to sync again.
The Zen is showing up fine in the device manager, but none of the software (Media Player, MediaSource) sees it.
Finally, after a day of trying new drivers, running cleanup, etc. I decided to go into the Zen's recovery menu. To get there, press and hold the Play button and press and hold the reset (use a paperclip) button while powering up.
Once there, select the first option in the menu to Clean up the system. I forgot what it's called and I'm in the middle of a sync now, so can't look.
Worked fine after that. Phew!
If your device is being detected fine, but cannot sync, try that and post here if it fixes it.

• Zen xtra

I am having problems with my zen xtra 60gb. It's worked fine until today. First it would recognize my player but when I tried to transfer it said player not connected. After a few attempt it would no longer even recognize my player was plugged. I have a second player that is my bosses here. I plug his in and it works fine. All updates are installed. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you try your player on another PC, or on your bosses PC? If it doesn't get recognised there at all either, then it's possible there is a problem with the unit.
If you can it to be recognised by the PC, then you can try updating the firmware.

• No driver found - Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - WinXP

I have used my Zen Xtra for over 2 years now, with the same PC I am currently having problems with. I recently had to do a complete reinstall of Windows (note that I have done at least 2 other complete reinstalls during the life of my Zen Xtra, with no problems). Windows Device Managers sees the NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra, but with the yellow question mark and exclamation point. Each attempt at driver installation results in the same problem. The driver ("JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US__30_03.EXE") installs completely, I'm told to reconnect my device so the driver can take effect. When I do, the device is still marked in Device Manager with exclamation point and yellow question mark, and Windows continues to ask if it can find and install the driver. I have told it not to (knowing that I just installed Creative's own driver), with no success, and other times let Windows try to install the driver (hoping it would find the Creative driver that was just installed). No luck. I have even done another complete reinstall of Windows, and tried to install the driver before any other program or hardware installations into my system. No luck. Note that there are no hardware changes between now and when I have done other complete Windows reinstallations. It just no longer accepts the Creative driver. I have also tried to install the driver in safe mode, with the same results. I have also completely removed the Zen Xtra (showing hidden devices in the Device Manager), and tried to reinstall. Firmware version of Zen Xtra was upgraded over a year ago to 2.0.03.
Specifics:
Windows XP Pro SP2
38GB free hard dri've space
Zen Xtra firmware version: 2.0.03

I have the same problem. But when i try to installl it it says he is missing an .nfo file.
I removed WMP and reinstalled WM0 because is crap.
I have Windows XP SP2
I have the newst firmware on it.
Can somebody help me with this because it's annoying not to put any new music on your mp3 player.
I never experienced this before even after formatting my HD.
Almost the same problem as fritzm but not completely because het gets an different error.
I have installed the CD but that doesnt work either.
I have installed the software from the website but that didnt help because he doesnt recognize my player.
Please help!!

• MediaSource 5 isn't recognizing my Zen Xtra pla

Hi,
I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra mp3 player, version .03.02. I've had it since July of 2003.
I recently bought a new computer (Dell Inspiron 520; Windows XP Home Edition). My old computer had Creative Organizer software on it. I no longer have (or more accurately, I can no longer find) any CDs that would allow me to install that software onto my new computer.
When I first plugged my mp3 player into my new computer, the computer didn't recognize the hardware. I went to the Creative support site and downloaded this driver ( JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US_2_0_00.EXE ). Installing that allowed the computer to recognize the player. I then tried to transfer music from my computer to the player with Windows Media Player 0 (my preference is to avoid upgrading to WMP , if possible). The computer *did* recognize the player and I was able to move music over, but when I unplugged the player to view the new files I had placed there, I wasn't able to find them on the player (I think they *are* there somewhere, but I can't seem to find where the Windows Media Player put them).
Therefore, I went back to the Creative support site and downloaded and installed the Creative MediaSource 5 software ( CMS5_PCAPP_LB_5_0_38.exe ), but when I open up Creative MediaSource 5 and click on "Transfer Music," I get a pop-up box saying that there isn't any mp3 player plugged into the system, so it can't transfer anything. It gives me that box no matter how many times I unplug and re-plug in the player to my computer.
At this point, I'd prefer to transfer my music to my player via the MediaSource software, since I have a feeling it will be more user-friendly for me. However, any advice that will help me with transferring music to my player and allowing me to find it easily on the player will be most appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi,
If you have not already, please make sure that you have the correct plugin installed. Check the firmware version of your Zen Xtra and go back to the download page where you downloaded MediaSource 5.
If you have the PlaysForSure firmware in your player, download and install this:
Creative PlaysForSure Devices Plugin 5.00.36 for Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer 27.90 MB
CMS5_MTP_PCAPP_LB_5_00_36.exe
Otherwise, download and install this:
Creative ZEN and NOMAD Jukebox Plugin 5.00.22 for Creative MediaSource 5 Player/Organizer 6.24 MB
CMS5_NJB2_PCAPP_LB_5_00_22.exe

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra stops working with XP following Windows Media Player 11 Beta Installat

Yesterday I was very pleased to find that my Creative Zen Xtra (model DAP-HD00) portable media player is a PlaysForSure capable device. Creative Labs, on November 9, 2005, released the Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware v2.0.03. I installed this firmware (I had to install the Creative ZenJukebox Driver v.30.03 first to get Windows to recognize the device). Once the firmware was upgraded, Windows began recognizing the Zen Xtra as a MTP device and life was good. I was able to synchronize it with both Napster To Go and Windows Media Player 0.
After this, I went ahead and installed Windows Media Player Beta, which I just downloaded yesterday as well.
From a functional standpoint, WMP seems to run just fine. However, when I connected the Creative Zen Xtra (with its PlaysForSure firmware), Windows redetected the hardware. It first showed "Creative Jukebox Zen Xtra" in the tooltip, followed by "MTP Device" in the new hardware tooltip. Finally, Windows announced that there was a problem installing my new hardware and that it may not work properly.
Sure enough, when I went into Device Manager, my Zen Xtra was showing as an MTP Device with an exclamation point on it. More specifically, it specified the status of, "This device cannot start (Code 0)."
Prior to the installation of Windows Media Player, the Creative Zen Xtra showed in device manager with the following characteristics under the heading "Windows Portable Devices":
Name: NOMAD Jukebox Zen XtraDriver Version: 5.2.0.0 dated 8/30/2004Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.3802.3802 built by dnsrv(bld4act)
Windows Media Player changed this to the following (the device now shows up under "Portable Devices"):
Name: MTP DeviceDriver Version: 5.2.5326.4762 dated 2/22/2006Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.5358.4827 (WMP_.060509-2009)C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\wudfrd.sys - v6.0.5348.0(winmain(wmbla).0604-339)
The file wudfrd.sys is NOT digitally signed in this case.
As of now, my Zen Xtra is completely unusable on this system, and I need to sync it with my laptop for the time being, which still has WMP 0 installed on it.
Is this a bug with WMP beta? Is it a problem with my firmware? Since this is PlaysForSure compliant firmware, and it worked flawlessly with Napster and WMP 0 (before the MTP driver was updated), it would seem to be a WMP beta issue. I'd like to hear more official confirmation on the subject, however.
Some general details about my system are:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2Verified GENUINE Microsoft operating system using Genuine Advantage ValidationIntel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz, Hyper-Threaded processor2.00 GB RAM
Windows Media Player Version: .0.5358.4827Napster Version: 3.6.0.7 (US)
Any recommendations? Fixes? Some have suggested rolling back the WMP installation, but I would like to consider this option only as an absolute last resort.
Best regards,Matt

Ok, this worked out accidentally - but happily
I first installed the driver - not the media source - but the driver for the device.
After that the windows device manager yellow sign disappeared - apparently the device driver was registered by windows.
Then I Installed Mediasource 5 - the installation went thru fine.
Does anyone have any recommended updates to install, please also advise what benefits.
Thanks.

• Fixing the creative zen xtra - creative firmware won't bring me dow

Hi all,
Recently my zen xtra crashed as a result of Creative's shoddy firmware! Anyway, I'm out of warrenty, creative want to try charge me about 20 quid and I ain't having that (read my other posts you'll hear the whole story)
Well now I've decided I'm gonna try fix things myself. I've ripped my player apart to reveal the 2.5" harddri've. I've got hold of a caddie to hold this in and connected to the computer. Dri've is not recognised (as i suspected, the firmware has corrupted toc and whathaveyou). So I'm formatting the dri've now, seems to be going ok (i'm thinking if I can't get the player working again at least I can make a 40gb external mini hard dri've)
Anyway, what I need now is to compare this hard dri've to another zen xtra one thats working and well. If anyone has (for some bizarre reason) backed up their zen dri've in this way cause you let me know. I need to know the file structure that it uses (as the software hides the real structure) and also the firmware (a working copy please!) that is as how it is installed rather than by using the installation software for the more conventional way :smileytongue:
Any help with that is appreciated, and those of you who are like me and have a ?200 paperweight should consider making it an external dri've like this also. (cheap caddies on ebay for those who want to know!)
hope this helps
phil

if i get a friend's zen xtra dri've and put it in mine, would you reckon it would work or am i likely to bugger up that too?
if the firmware is part in hardware then i doubt there's a lot i can do, but my intention was to copy my friend's dri've to mine then put it in and see if it works...
any ideas?

• Creative Zen Touch no longer docking; problem has appeared out of the bl

For the last couple of years, I've used my Creative Zen Touch without any issues. I managed to upgrade to the MTP firmware with no troubles whatsoever. When I tried to plug it in a few days ago and add a number of songs, the computer no longer recognised the player. The USB ports seem fine, and when I plug it in the player boots. It doesn't come up with the "docked" screen on the player, however, and in Windows a "trying to add new hardware wizard" window pops up that never used to pop up before. Whatever I try to do, it never works. I'm using Windows XP SP2 and like I said, I never used to have any issues before until this popped out completely unexpected. It just won't realise that the Zen Touch is a MTP player for some reason!

The people on the forum who would respond are customers, like you, being rude to them probably won't encourage them to help.
