Zen Xtra Scrolling prob

My 60G Zen Extra just started scrolling problems. Once it is turned on the second you touch the scroll bar it starts a fast scroll of the menu. Nothing else works. You cannot pause, shut the unit down or anything. The only way to stop it is to remove the battery. When you put the battery back in it does the same thing.
I have multiple batteries and it does it on all of them. It also does it when the charger is plugged in.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

ld be dirt under the scroll wheel button thing, i had a problem with my Zen xtra scroll button 'sticking' and i fixed it by completly stripping dowen my zen xtra, and cleaning the switch with some compressed air ( from an aerosol air duster can)

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra connection prob

I already tried searcing the forums, And I didn't come across anything like this, And anything I came across that was similar I did as was suggested and it didn't help. anyways, onto the problem...:
I'm using Windows XP by the way.
I just got a new Zen Xtra a few days ago because I had to return my first one because the harddri've crashed, so I took this one home, loaded my music onto it and it was fine. Today I went to load more music onto it and my computer started lagging really badly, I use Realplayer to put my music onto the player and when I clicked into it, It would freeze as it was starting and I'd have to kill the program.
Then I tried going into My Computer to go into the Nomad explorer, Except my computer took about 5 minutes to find itself, And then it only found 'Desktop' and 'My Computer' which, 'My Computer' had nothing in it. So I went into desktop and that fixed the problem with the harddri'ves showing up, Except once I get into Nomad Explorer it says my player isn't connected.
I (physically) disconnected and reconnected my player while in Nomad Exploer but it's still a no-go.
I cleaned up the disk on my player and rebooted it, I used a different cable and tried all my USB ports. What do you suggest I do?
I really need some help and if it doesn't get fixed I'm not getting another replacement, I'll have to get a different brand.Message Edited by spring90 on 08-07-2006 04:43 PM

Ok... I think I figured it out. I finally got into the recovery mode. I let the battery sit out of the mp3 player for a while, hoping that there is a capacitor that would run out of power. I put the battery back in and got into recovery mode. I ran disk clean up. Nothing changed. I had the same problem I first started off with. So I took the battery out again for an hour. Came back, and got back into recovery mode. I reinstalled the OS. Everything seems to be working fine.
I hope that anyone having a similar problem with this mp3 player can keep this in the back of their mind if they cannot get into recovery mode due to a boot up and shut down problem.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gp prob

Well, to start off with, I loved my mp3 player. So far, I ran into problems that I could not fix. I downloaded all of the updates that were needed. My mp3 player, a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gb, suddenly would not work the same way. When the power adapter of battery are inserted, the player starts up. When they are pulled the player shuts down. One of the problems is when the player is on, it doesn't want to leave the main screen that says, "EAX". The hard dri've is not spinning, and no data is being accessed. I found on this website a page that tells users how to reset their mp3 player. For my mp3 player, it must be turned off for me to do a hard disk check, re-installation of operating system, or a format of the hard dri've...which is another problem, because I cannot turn it off. As I stated previously, the player is either on or off depending on if the battery is in or not. I am totally puzzeled. I cannot connect the player to the computer because of this problem. So either I have a new 60gb laptop hard dri've, or I figure out a way to get this to work. I haven't been able to find any threads like this or any users experiencing these problems.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra sound prob

Hi, I've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra for more than 2 years and have had little problems with it. However, now I cannot get any sound out of the left speaker of any type of speaker/earphones I plug into the audiojack. This is not a speaker/earphone problem, they work with any audio equipment. I can get sound out of both left and right speakers/phones if I plug the jack only 80% into the audiojack. But if I plug the jack all the way into the player, only the right speaker/phone works. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

    Hello There,
I am experiencing the exact same problem - "Device not connected, even though I can see the device as a virtual dri've on my XP SP2 PC. I have contacted creative tech support and followed their instructions to the letter with no success.
Creative tech support instructed me to try the following:
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>MaKe sure that my antivirus software, firewall and spy ware is turned off. Their thinking was that some services are effect the connection between the MP3 device and USB port.</LI>
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>Also I tried booting my XP PC in safe mode, ensuring the most of the services were turned off .. i.e. firewall, virus protection, etc. Still can not get the device to connect.</LI>
align=center><FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>The Error message on the Device itself (Zen Xtra display) reads as follows:Firmware error on reboot -- error message simply states "firmware problem" then goes to Rescue Mode v.3 - Boot v.4, HW v0.0.displays following 4 options: Clean Up2: Format all3: Reload OS4: RebootTried all four options and still getting same error message.
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>I am going to try and load the original firmware that came with Zen Xtra, if that works I will try to upgrade the firmware to the latest release.
    <FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>Later tonight I will get a chance to attempt these actions. <FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>I will post my results later.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra Connection prob

I recently upgraded from 2000 Pro to XP Pro and have struggled with connectivity since. I cannot view the Zen xtra as a hard disc in the 'my computer' function. It connects fine with Media Organizer, but I can't view it as an external dri've. This worked fine in 2000. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

I was unaware that the Zen Xtra could be viewed as a hard dri've on any OS. It certainly cannot be viewed that way on Windows XP.

  • Zen XTRA driver prob

I have just reformatted my pc and my backup and music is on my mp3 player. It is zen xtra with newest firmware.
When i go to install the latest drivers of your site it gets to the part with "now plug in". i plug it in and the setup doesnt do anything but in the back windows does "found new hardware" "install drivers". It cannot find anything thus makes it an unknown device. I point windows to the creative drivers folder that the install makes. It doesnt find anything.
    Cannot do anything. Please help!

If you have the latest firmware that is playsforsure, you don't need any drivers. Just plug your Zen into the USB and you will be able to use it. If the firmware is not playsforsure, you will probably need to download the drivers again, failing this you should contact customer support.Message Edited by joshua32 on 05-0-2006 04:22 PM

  • HILFE......Creative Zen Xtra Firmware Prob

    Gruss Annemarie

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra firmware prob

I tried to upgrade the firmware and now my Xtra is in Rescue Mode.
None of the updates that I downloaded from the website area all telling me that no device is detected.
But my computer recognizes my Xtra.
I tried downloading everything again but that didn't work.
Now my wife bought a Zen V with all different programs, but I don't know if that makes a difference.
What exactly am I doing wrong?

if the above solution doesn't work, i had a similar problem on the same model. if i remember, i just did different combinations of reboots, formatting, and firmware upgrades. it sounds unscientific, but i eventually got the computer to recognize the player and it worked until it got stolen (sad story). i know this isn't great advice, but in short: don't give up on it too easily. those things are surprisingly resiliant.

  • 40GB Zen Xtra Harddisk Prob

I've had my Zen since January and its been brilliant, took a while to get here due to middle-man company but great nontheless. Well, till today however; I was out with the Zen yesterday when suddenly the battery died, first time its happened but it didn't bother me. Charged it today and then went to turn it on to access my music, much to my dismay it stalled on loading up the mp3 player, pausing on the EAX screen. After about 2 minutes it loaded up the Rescue Mode screen, I tried rebooting it. Same problem, I tried cleaning it - nothing happened. I tried reloading the OS - 'Harddisk Problem'. I eventually after trying to update the firmware which didn't change a thing did the unholy task of formatting the disk ... again 'Harddisk Problem'.
Now I've contacted the company I bought it from AND Creative over this problem and I'm fearing its going to have to be sent back at the very least. Which isn't exactly the best scenario seeing as I'm heading to London next week, but anyway, if anyone knows of any way this can be fixed or if the the reason is quite obvious, please leave a post =)
    Cheers.

I've actually just read up on a site about this problem and scarily enough it was suggested a bit of brute force or shaking of the player may be advisable. I tried my hand at holding it at arms left and twisting my wrist from side to side, the other more drastic technique was to place the Zen on a surface, hold it, and give it a sharp tap on the side. The latter proved more effecti've and the annoying catching noise ceased to continue.

  • 40gb Nomad Zen Xtra charging prob

When I've tried to charge it lately the battery icon doesnt appear, a little power cable icon appears instead, after a few moments it goes away and the player turns off, any ideas anyone??

  • Holy cow- zen xtra weird prob

I was just listening to my xtra this morning, and in the middle of a song it just froze up and started buzzing really, REALLY loud. I took the battery out and put it back in and it was fine. No idea why....Anybody know?

Just some random event. Could have been a corrupt MP3, or some other anomaly which happened in the PCB at the time. If it happens frequently then get more concerned, but if this is just a one off I wouldn't worry.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra Static prob

    Hello,
This is my first post to this forum. I?m hoping someone knows any reason/fix for my problem.
I bought my player last March at CompUSA. For the first months it has worked like a charm, but ever since 2 months ago, it started giving some static issues. Music will play fine for a while and then all of a sudden you start hearing some static. If you turn it off and on again, it will disappear and then be back again. At first I thought: "Well, it's only happening like once a day. I can li've with that." But now, It's happening too often. I also noticed it will happen a lot faster when I skip through tracks (one thing I do a lot).
Also, my brother has the same model and the same firmware. When I commented to him about having the issue, he told me the turn off, and then on, thing. Thus, my device is not the only one with the problem.
Am I the only one having the issue around here? Are there any known solutions?
I read a review at amazon.com where the guy stated he had the same problem also.
    Looking forward to any input.
I'd have written to Creative Support first. But last time I wrote (My song were disappearing from the song lists, but still taking up space), they wrote twice back telling me to Reset, Format, Clean-up, etc. That didn't help at all, and if it wasnt for the nice lady at CompUSA, I'd still have a defecti've unit.

I got a bit of pretty quiet static now and then for a few hours before mine died.
Considering that you got it back in March, your 90-day labor warranty is gone, but you still have months left on the parts warranty. (That is, if you're in the US. I think Europe has year parts and labor.) If you have to send it in, you first need to get a RMA code from tech support. And assuming you're in the US, you'll have to pay a $25 "diagnostic fee," but that's likely the only labor fee you'll pay because they usually seem to diagnose it as "broken" and send a replacement.
Because you have a while left, I'd recommend keeping it, trying a reformat, see if it gets worse, etc. Definately do a full backup of your music from it very soon, as there's no way to get anything back off it if it dies.

  • Zen Xtra Harddisk Prob

Whenever I boot up my MP3 player it goes straight to rescue mode. From here no matter what option I pick it comes up with 'Harddisk Problem' and goes back to the rescue mode menu. I have had it for 3 years now and I take very good care of it.
It is out of warranty so a replacement cannot be sent out or it fixed for free.
    Any suggestions?

well maybe you have a harddisk promblem, Sorry to sound repetiti've, I think you should go to customer service and see if its a problem that can be fixed, at worst they may ask you to buy another HD....

  • Zen Xtra file prob

Here is the scenario: When I use my player daily, I have no problems. If it sits for a couple days, the next time I power it on, it goes through a library re-build (which takes for ever since I have nearly 40GB on it). I have tried clean up, which seems to stop at 99% for a long time, then completes. After completing, I've tried a reboot. Same problem, goes through the library build.
. What has caused this (didn't used to do this)?
    2. Will reformatting fix the problem (if it's a file issue)?

cfeltenberger: I think you have two options left. The first I would try would be to reinstall the firmware, or see if there's an upgrade available from what you have now. Reloading the firmware shouldn't blank the hard disk. Failing that, then yes, you're looking at a format. I can't guarantee either will work, but they're definitely worth a try.
Rich_T: He mentioned that he'd tried a cleanup.
silverknight4jc: Please read the posts floated at the top of the forum. One of those tells you how to do a disk cleanup. It varies by player. Also please read the "Read this first..." post.

  • Zen Xtra major prob

I was attempting to upgrade my firmware with the latest version and now I can't get the new firmware to load on my player. I follow the instructions on the site and when it reads the player it says "Your player cannot start up properly. Please reboot your player and run this application again." This is really bad cause now I dont have an OS/firmware on my system... HELP!

Can you try entering Rescue Mode on the player? What happens when you try that?
If you can get in there, try the Reload OS option first, and then try loading the firmware again.
