Zen Xtra Software not launch

hello - I have been searching the internet for over a month trying to find a solution to my Zen Xtra problem.
About a month ago, I launched the Creative media program to transfer files into my Xtra. The software just shut down. After repeatedly trying to get it to open, it comes back with a message. "Creative Mediasource has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Thats not very helpful. Ive uninstalled the original driver I got with the Zen - I reinstalled the software - and downloaded drivers from the Creative site. Nothing works. My player works fine - but I cant access the files to add/delete.
Is it all over for my Zen.
Any help would be appreciated.
Vic B.

TBeatles67,
Go to the website and download the following updates.
. Drivers - Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03 (.3 MB)
2. MediaSource update - Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 (52.2 MB)
3. Nomad Plugin - Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource (9.72 MB)
If you intend to update the firmware, just go for the version .xx.xx update that's available on the website. It shouldn't delete the files in the player but like any electronics device, anything can go wrong anytime so I would also suggest backing up your data/audio files in the player first just in case.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB not playing correctly anymore, help!!

Thanks. I keep getting directed to that knowledge base page, but it is not addressing my problem. My computer immediately tells me that the device has "malfunctioned" and the computer does not recognize it. I only have the usb cord that came with the zen, so I don't have another one to try. I love my zen and have staunchly defended it over the years vs. an i-pod. However, this is my 2nd onI've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB for over 5+ years. It has worked great, with minimal problems. I had a firmware update issue quite a while back. I'm not sure how to resolve this problem. Here is the situation:
Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB is fully charged and ready to use.
I tried loading a set playlist but it won't load. So I tried another, and it doesn't load. Not sure what to do, I go to the menu. This time I choose an artist/band. The music loads, but it doesn't play. I try again, then it starts to play. So I load a few other artists that way. It seems like I had a issue to work out later. Being away from my computer that was going to have to wait. After some time the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB started to start N stop diferent songs. A few times it froze while playing a song. Then would unfreeze to play another, then suddenly start playing the previous one. After about 0-5 minutes of this I decided I had enough. So I planned to empty the playlist, and turn it off. It took me atleast three attempts to empty the playlist and turn it off.
Are these problems fixable What are they hardware or software
Would an OS or firmware update fix these problems Is my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB hard dri've going Can I get a replacement Or do I need to buy a new player
Please help me get my player working. I really like this model, I'd hate to have to replace it.
in 5 years. (The first one fried itself, but fortunately was still under warrantly.) Sadly, I, too, am considering moving on. I onlyreceived generic help fromthe Creative SupportTeam (who ultimately told me my zen is "unrepairable" when their one-size-fits-all solutions didn't work).Since there seems to be an overwhelming # of people experiencing similar problems, maybe the time is right to make the change, especially since an iPod classic 60 GB (7th Generation) is quite affordable these days.

Formatting will erase all the files on the player,Cleanup scans the disc & corrects file system errors, broken links (from when you delete things)ect. but does NOT repair bad sectors,Reboot then rebuilds the file system. I'd do the Cleanup>Reboot first to see if that solves the problem.here you will find how to open the player to see what dri've is in there. You can then search Ebay or Google the model number to find another one.

Setup will now install the necessary drivers to enable your device to be detected
    I selected OK.
It said Please remove any Zen Xtra devices before the installtion. I did.

  • Help with Zen Xtra (30) *note: stickied topics did not he

I tried loading the .20.08 software upgrade onto my zen xtra and now it's acting rather strangely. When I turn it on now, it registers a button press because the backlight turns on when I press a button but the buttons don't actually do anything and the scroll wheel doesn't work either. I tried doing rescue mode by turning it off, having it plugged in, holding play, putting the paper clip in the reset hole, and then removing said paper clip, but it will not restart in rescue mode. I really have no idea what is going on, and I've had the player for nearly a year, so the short and useless warrantee is very over. Anyone?

I believe you are not holding it down long enough----- I think in the manual it says to hold it down until rescue mode comes up..... it took a long tome for mine to come up when i did it
If holding it longer doesnt help, thats all i got

  • Nomad Zen Xtra does not power

I have just recieved my Zen Xtra today. But when I power it on, per the manuals proper instruction, it does not power on. I have also tried to charge the battery with the mp3 player both on & off. When I had it on the "using AC outlet" icon would show. It does seem I need a new battery. But I fear something else, could the charging mechanism be dead? This player is a refurbished product by the way. It works on the AC outlet, I can transfer files to it, and I can successfully connect it to the USB port. the hard dri've sounds fine. It seems I need to buy a new battery right? Where else besides Creative.com can I buy one? Thanks.

    First, read/try the advice here
Failing that, I would suggest buying a replacement battery. Check froogle.com (that link is set to the best deals) for a good price.

  • Zen Xtra software - need HELP!

Hi, Just bought a Zen Xtra 40 GB from a friend. I am totally confused about just about everything, and found today that the Nomad Primer has disappeared! But, my software question:
I am trying to figure out what software I need to update or install on my computer/player, etc. I don't understand if my firmware and MediaSource software is old or new or what?
I am running Windows XP Service pack 2, all up to date. The Zen I just bought is a year old. The firmware on it says it is: version .03.02. My MediaSource software says it is: version 2.02.06.
Do I need to update? If so, which updates do I need? If I install new firmware, will it erase all the music on my player? I am desperately trying to back up my Zen music library onto my computer, but everything keeps going wrong. Maybe it's my software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Zen Xtra will not for

I recently acquired a Zen Xtra and have been having problems changing music. I cannot copy any new music onto the dri've and when I erase the music that is there, it works well until I have to do a cold start at which time the player reverts to what was originally there. I have tried to format the dri've and after a successful format the player again reverts to its former music when I reboot the system. I have tried to replace the OS and the player hangs up my desktop machine during the process. Any suggestions?

The only people realistically that repair them are Creative, and I doubt very much they'll backup your tracks for you. They'll charge you a fixed rate for the repair, and return you a new or "refurbed" player.
If you are desperately desperate to get the tracks off the player you could buy a secondhand Zen and then try transplanting the hard disk across, assuming of course the problem is with the Zen's motherboard.

  • Creative Zen Xtra Firmware not updat

    Hi everyone,
After a few months of disuse I got out my old Zen Xtra 30GB. I turned it on and it booted to Rescue Mode. I formatted everything and erased the OS. Now when I plug the player in (After installing the most recent drivers) Windows recognises it and Media Source makes a half-hearted attempt at syncing it, but when I try to update it with the latest PlaysForSure firmware the updater first gives me "Your player's current firmware is the same as this version. Do you want to continue?". I click yes, and the firmware updater says "Your battery levels are too low. Please charge your batteries before you proceed."
Obviously I can't charge the batteries while in Rescue Mode, so I am unable to proceed with the firmware update. The player is plugged into the mains as I do this. The player appears in Media Source (latest version) and in the device manager without a malfunction sign or anything. Also the old version of the firmware updater before PlaysForSure doesn't recognise the player.
Is there anyway to bypass the battery level check so I can install the firmware? Thanks.

You won't believe but I had the same problem just couple of days ago with the same player (but 40 gigs). I was confused just like you, so I tried to format the disk again (while connected to PC) and reloaded the OS. Then a message appeared like 'Now you can update your firmware' or something like that, so I ran the firmware from PC, and no message about a battery level appeared, and the firmware was updated correctly. Try it, and let me know if it's OK! Good luck!

  • Zen Sleek: Software not work

well i just received a Zen Sleek today for Christmas and so far the only problem im having is that the software is not working on my computer. I think the CD ROM Dri've on my comp is messed up so I was just wondering if there was some way I could download all the software I need for my Zen Sleek... The media explorer thing, the mediasource, and w/e else I need. Ive been looking around this site and haven't been able to find what I need.
thanks in advance for the help.

thank you so much! now i have another problem though...i tried to install the Playsforsure CD on my computer, but it says I need Service Pack or higher. im on the microsoft website looking for it and it told me to download the automatic updates for windows XP, however service pack is not on the list of updates im downloading, like microsoft said it would be. is this Playsforsure CD necessary for my mp3 player?
Not necessarily. It's only necessary if you want to use PlayForSure compatible subscription music e.g. Yahoo Music Unlimited, and/or if you want "driverless" support on Windows XP.
The v2 firmware will mean you can ONLY use the player with Windows XP (+ SP/2 + WMP0) PCs.
If you don't need this stick with v.
if so, does anyone have a clue as to how i can download Service Pack ?
Windows Update should prompt with Service Pack 2, as this is the latest. SP2 is better to have.
also, the first thing im supposed to download on your list is not listed under downloads for Zen Sleek.
Ah! I was forgetting you have a Sleek. Hmm... look under another player like the Micro, although there's a possiblity the earlier drivers won't work for the Sleek.
If not, you'll have to try and resolve this problem with your CD-ROM dri've.

  • Internet related software not launching

I've recently reinstalled Mac OS X 10.4 on my PowerBook G4 and updated the software to 10.4.11 via Software Update. However, having done so, all the System's internet related software (i.e. Mail, Safari, Software Update, iChat, .Mac System Prefs) will no longer launch.
The applications will bounce momentarily in the dock, then disappear without an error message. In System Preferences, the Software Update and .Mac preferences panes refuse to open, simply stating, for example "Preferences Error / Could not load Software Update"
Using Firefox and Thunderbird is possible but I'm unable to update the system software and unable to sync with my mobileMe account which is a major problem.

Hi carlnp, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
