Zen Xtra won't start

i've got a problem with my zen xtra mp3 player, which i've had for about 4 months. whenever i try to start it, it displays the creative logo, then the eax logo. then it freezes, and my computer shows it as "not connected". i have tried to let it wait a few hours, pressed reset dozens of times, did a clean up and then i even formatted it.
nothing worked. is there any other thing i can do to make it work again, other than returning it to the store and getting a new one?
thanks for the help...

now i've searched the download center on this page and it says there is now firmware download available for my player. are there any other pages where i could get it's

  • Zen Xtra won't appear in Creative MediaSource Organi

I've been using my 30 GB Jukebox for a couple years w/ no real problems except that I remember there being a problem w/ a USB port & I had to change something so that the Creative MediaSource Organizer software could recognize the mp3 player. Now I've bought a 60 GB Zen Xtra (same player, x2) & am having the same problem. I've upgraded everything & hate the new interface for transfering files... most of the time the program just freezes. I'd like to be able to use the same Creative software I was using before, but it doesn't recognize the new device. If anyone knows what I'm talking about or how I can fix it, I'd rather not have to call?Customer Service?again for $3.

I'm just giving this topic a bump. I've upgraded to Creative MediaSource Organizer v 3.30.2, but it won't recognize either of my mp3 players when I plug them in. I'm able to use the Zen Xtra Media Explorer, but?most of the time it just freezes up. I'd like to be able to use the software I'm familiar w/, so if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it. I seem to remember having a similar problem when I first purchased my 30 GB Zen Xtra.

  • Zen Xtra won't connect for Firmware Install. WMP Rolled back to v

My Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra would not load firmware from it's hard dri've. It only entered into a cycle of displaying the 'Creative' then 'EAX' screens. I Downloaded the latest version of firmware 'ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03' and installed it following the instructions on the Creative website.
The install started initially but then failed because either the software installing the firmware, or the zen xtra, locked up. I left it for nearly an hour and had no choice but to cancel and try again.
Since this time I have been unable to load any version of firmware to the zen xtra. The installer says that the zen is not connected even though it is. When I do connect it, the 'autoplay' dialog appear asking me what to do. So, the computer recognises the device as 'NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra' but the firmware installer will not recognise it at all.
I have carried out a 'Reload OS' in preparation for new firmware. I have also carried out a 'Format All' and 'Clean Up' from the Recovery Menu that the zen xtra is now stuck in. All appears to be fine with the Zen's hard dri've as, on completion of the format, the hard dri'ves shows 'Freespace 3833.7MB'.
I have looked on this discussion forum and FAQ and this appears to be a common problem but have found no solutions. I have tried uninstalling Windows Mediaplayer and rolled back to v0 and reinstalling drivers and MediaSource software but problem persists. Please help.

    OK. Sorted it! Try this!
    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9829
Turns out you have to uninstall Windows Media Player Runtime v as well as WMP itself.
Also, if you have the problem with reduced HDD space because of installing PlayForSure firmware, you could install a bigger hard dri've. They are the generic 2.5 inch hard dri'ves fitted in Laptop Computers! My 40Gb Zex Xtra now has the 80Gb HDD I removed from my VAIO! And it was easier to do on the Zen than it was on the VAIO!

  • My 30 GB Zen Xtra Freezes at start

When I turn on my Zen Xtra, it freezes at the "Creative" screen. I have reset it and have tried removing the battery, but it hasn't helped. If it helps, I haven't used it for around 6 months.

I am having the same but it seems that changing the "play mode" from "Normal" to "Shuffle" does mine in,(now it seems as if any use of controls causes freeze ups)then the only way out if you find your self with out a small object is to remove the battery.
I have ran scan disk,I have removed all files and reloaded them,I am next going to check my mp3's for corruption and fix them or not load them up and see if this persists.
As a note i had the Zen for over a month where it performed flawlessly with the same files loaded before it started doing this. It's very frustrating as it happens all the time now unless I start play and don't touch any controls.

  • Takin Zen Xtra 30mins to start u

Everytime I change from adaptor to battery or even unplug the adaptor then plug it back in it takes my Zen Xtra (30GB) 30 minutes to start up as it "sticks" on the screen reading EAX... what can I do? I tried rescueing it, earsing the OS and loading the latest firmware... no use...

The player must be faulty. Are you under warranty?

  • Zen Xtra has trouble starting up, strange problem, please h

Hello, my Zen Xtra has been having problems for a while.....it only starts up on first try every about 4 times......removing the battery and putting it back in makes it start up? every 2 times. I bought a spare battery and it makes no difference. Sometimes I can sit there pressing the On Button for an hour then magically just starts up.......Only had this MP3 for about a year and am wondering if it is finished. Any advice? Thanks.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra won't turn

My problem is exactly as the title states. I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra (40 gig HD) and I cannot get it to power on. This problem has been occuring since yesterday evening. I try to plug it into the computer via the USB cable, but this does nothing. The same is true of plugging it into a wall outlet with the charger that came with it. I can't tell you what the firmware on it is, as I have no ability to view that.
Any suggestions as to what I can try next?

I have (and left it out for fi've minutes, per another suggestion in another thread). Thanks to both of you for your help, I'm in contact with Creative's customer support via email now (thankfully it's within the 90 day warranty period)

  • Zen Xtra won't turn

    Right.
I was upgrading to the new firmware released 2 days ago. I had my Zen Xtra plugged into my PC and into a wall socket to prevent a sudden battery loss. The status meter goes through its thing, installing the new firmware. It then says "restarting player" like it should.
And it never turned back on.
I left it there for about an hour before I tried to turn it back on manually. Then I tried disconnecting/reconnecting the power cable. Then the battery. The reset hole doesn't work, nor does turning it on while holding play. It just sits there as if there was no battery and power plugged into it.
I've already sent an email to customer service, but I bet this forum can be faster.
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear all,
I decided to upgrade my Creative Zen Xtra to the new firmware a few days ago... what a bad decision that was!
I did everything the instructions said, plugged the player in ran the software and all was good until the software froze and the player switched off. I left t for a while and then got worried. I tried to switch the player on and low and behold, it wouldn't!
I've tried the recovery mode (reset button with the play button held down) but nothing appears. No icon when the power cable is plugged in and no luck when tried with a full battery from a working player (my girlfriend has the same one).
Very frustrated by this, I decided to e-mail Creative and explain the situation. They sent an email back which was quite typical of a helpdesk, stating standard "have you tried this?" and "have you tried that?" type of questions. Obviously I tried these but since I had already tried a few methods of reviving the player I had little faith... and none of them worked.
Another email to Creative providing the information they asked for (serial number, date of purchase, responses when certain actions are taken). They emailed back informing me that my player is now out of warrenty - I have had it for year and 3 months. I've have included the latest email response below:
    <EM>Dear Phil
    Thank you for replying.
I am sorry to inform you that the warranty for your player has already
    expired.
If you wish to carry out an Out of warranty repair/replacement, there
will be certain charges that will incur to it.
Do get back to me on the above on whether the above is ok with you.
    Thanks.
    Sorry for the inconveniences caused.
Please retain all the previous correspondence when replying to this
    email.
    Best Regards

    <EM></EM>
When I received this email I was intrigued to see the comment regarding "certain charges" and that no exact figure is provided. I have now emailed them saying that I would like the player fixed but I would also like to know the "certain charges" before I commit to anything! I'm finding it annoying that rather than the issue being pin pointed originally, I have now sent 3 emails and still no further to resolving the problem.
I personally am frustrated and disgusted that I am now left with a very expensi've paper weight due to a poor firmware release by Creative themselves which they now expect me to pay for because of their poor programming abilities. I have read other comments of people who have experienced the same situation and so I would like to make these large numbers known to Creative. If anyone has experienced this same problem please make the community aware by posting on this message. I would sincerely advise others not to upgrade until Creative have addressed this issue completely as I do not want others to have the experiences I am having now.
    Thank you for reading this,
    Phil

  • Zen Xtra won't connect to WinXP after firmware and driver upda

I have 40GB Zen Xtra on which I've installed the .20.08 firmware. I've also installed driver update .30.03 on WinXP. Immediately after doing that, my Zen refused to connect to the system. Normally, I'd get the 2-tone "device-connected" alert from the system after plugging it in. Now I get a single tone, repeated 3 times quickly and the Zen is inaccessible. (I do get the normal "device disconnected" sound when I unplug it or power it off). The player works fine, otherwise--I just can't sync it to the library on my PC. Anyone know what's up with this?

Well, that doesn't help. I uninstalled every Creative thing--the driver, MediaSource, etc--restarted the computer and installed the .30.03 version;? no joy, same symptoms. I uninstalled that, restarted? my machine and installed the .20.04c version driver, which seems to be the latest WHCL certified one. No change.
I strongly suspect the firmware now. I'm tempted to "Reload OS" diag option, but if the drivers don't work, I'll be stuck with a completely useless device.

  • Zen Xtra won't conn

    Hi there,
    I've just bought a new PC and want to connect my Zen Xtra to it, as the player is now 3 years old I've lost the original CD, so I've downloaded all the drivers;
    NMEX_PCApp_3_0_0.exe (Explorer)
    JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US__30_03.EXE (Drivers)
    CMS_PCAPP_LB_3_30_2.exe (Mediasource)
And my player connects fine to my PC and pops up under My Computer, I also get the NOMAD Explorer and that works fine, I can see all my music, but when I run Mediasource Organizer it can't see the player at all.
    Any idea what I'm missing?

  • My Zen Micro won't Start Up!!!!!!! (Please answ

My zen froze on me when i was playing a song
So i removed the battery and restarted it but
It never goes past the "Creative Screen" and it makes a funny noise
Can someone please Help me out!!!!

One possible thing to still try is to let the ZM sit idle for 24 hours (or, in the case of the one that won't shut down, you have to make it lose the whole battery until it goes dead), meaning until the normal standby is off so that the ZM doesn't remember the last song played anymore and where it left off. That way, the OS is really started new when you switch the ZM on, it MAY make a difference.
Else ... contact support and have your player sent in.
Weird ... we are getting an aweful lot of really screwed ZMs recently here in the forum ... for many different reasons, but still ...
btw, could you two post here what firmware you were using at the time of breakdown?
    Cheers,
    Jan.

  • Zen Touch won't start up. Is it de

Everytime I start it up, it stops at the splash screen and makes clicky noises for awhile before booting up to recovery mode. Every option I choose there just freezes the player, along with more clicking sounds. My warranty probably expired (I got it last year, and I don't even think I had one to begin with) so I just want to know if it's dead or not. A one year life span on these things is a bit cheap, so I'm hoping it's not beyond repairs.Message Edited by golbez on 0-23-2005 09:2 PM

  • My Zen Micro won't start!

    Hi,
my zen micro turns on when it is connected to the computer. but it only says, "creative, copyright...." how do i get it to start again? i tried it on different computers to see if it was a pc problem but that didn't help either. then, i tried charging the battery but that didn't work. THEN, i tried removing the battery and putting it in again. yet, NO LUCK!! does this mean i have to buy a new battery for my mp3 player? HEEELLPPP ME. =)

Mine had the same problem except recorvery mode doesn't work; it'll just freeze if you select to Clean Up, Format, Reload Firmware, or reboot.
It happened to my previous Zen Microphoto also. Simply put, its junk.

  • Zen Xtra won't b

Has anyone figured out how to get the Zen to boot after a failed firmware upgrade? I've seen multiple threads about how to fix it by unloading USB drivers and such, but all of those methods require you to be able to access the reset menu on the Zen. My won't even do that. No power up. No reset. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Worked fine right up until the point that I tried applying the update so I could load purchased music on it.

I'm disgusted with Creative over my Zen Micro MP3 player.
I was one of the first people to buy the unit, when they first came out. November 2004 it was. (a happy day it was)
That's exactly a year and 4 months ago.
Now BAAM, suddenly it no longer wants to work. (NOT BOOTING UP - OR NOT READING THE HARD DRIVE) as technical support put it.
The result, pay US ?80.00 and we'll send you a refurbished replacement unit.
Come on Creative...this is **Bleeped**....and you know it.
Be warned other Creative Zen carriers !!! It seems these Zen Micro Hard Dri'ves a little FRAGILE.
    (NOT SO HAPPY)

  • My Zen Xtra won't go into rescue m

If I follow the directions to go into rescue mode, my unit just boots up to normal mode every time. I am running .03.02 firmware, and while the unit seems to be running correctly, I noted there was some rather substantial updates requiring .20.08. I just can't seem to get the power-on and reset button combination to work.

    rwfish,
Press and hold on to the Play button until the player boot into the recovery. You should not release the Play button after pressing the Reset.
