Zero byte deleted files

Hi All,
Big problem! I used to be able to salvage files with Filer after deletion,
however, when files are deleted or overwritten from a Windows XP PC, the
salvage utility in Filer does find the files, BUT it is all with zero bytes
and it is then not possible to salvage those files. Is there any other way
to salvage such files or do a repair before salvaging? The Netware version
is NWSB 6.0
Any help will be much appreciated,
Ben

Are you sure that are files and not maybe directories or dfs junctions?
Did you delete those files or just replace by empty DBs? If the later
they should be there in the directory and obviously can not be salvaged
- if those empty DBs were deleted after emptying did they have more
than 0 bytes before deleting?
If they did only have 0 bytes before deletion (not before emptying the
DB) I think you can not regain any info from this files - so just
forget them or if they are not already deleted, delete them now. Any
info could only be retrieved from a valid backup before the filesize
was reduced to 0 bytes.
If nothing does help and you have NSS volumes, go to the NSS repair
options like nss /poolrebuild=poolname and be sure to have a valid
backup of the pool before starting this. With TFS volumes you should
use vrepair instead. But this would only help, if your files were not
already damaged by your clipper application under XP by writing 0 bytes
files.
If the later is the case try the different compatibility settings for
your program under XP, maybe you have luck in Win98 compatibility mode.

  • Can't create repository - zero byte log file?

    Hello all,
I'm getting the 'CDR-21244 : This process has been aborted' message when creating the repository in a 10g database using Designer 10g ( 9.0.4.5). I get identical results with Designer 9i (9.0.2.7). I've checked the installation log file, according to the documentation, and it contains zero bytes. The IMP.EXE window doesn't say anything unusual, it simply reports a couple of possible character conversions and then terminates before doing anything.
None of the suggested solutions to this error from the Repository Installation Guide seem to apply to me:
    * I have all the proper permissions and settings according to the 'check requirements' dialog
    * I don't have anything in my log file
    * The IMP.EXE utility is installed
    * TNSNAMES.ORA seems fine since I can connect to this database using TOAD
    Has anyone else seen this?
I'm using Windows XP, by the way.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Can you please give us the following information :
    1. Both Designer 9.0.4.5 and 10g Database are installed in same machine or different machines.
    2. Version of Export/Import utilities used by Designer
    3. Value in the registry variable 'REPOS61'
Steps to get the registry value
    a. Invoke and connect to 'Repository Administration Utility'.
    b. Invoke 'Check Requirements' utility.
    c. Expand 'Parameter Settings' node and '[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\REPOS61\]' node.
    d. Note the values for 'EXECUTE_EXPORT', 'EXECUTE_IMPORT', 'EXECUTE_PLUS_RAU' variables.
    4. Version of Database.
    Regards,
    Wilson.

  • Copying zero byte pdf files infinitely between shared computers

I've just had a nasty experience (which has happened years before in lower operating systems) and is extremely annoying. My Mac Mini and MacBook are set to share files. On my Mini (running 10.7.5) I create a pdf file from a "Print this page" option on a Safari webpage  (using "Print this page" => PDF => Save as PDF). The file shows up ok in the finder of my Mini. Then in another finder window I open my shared MacBook (running Mavericks) and navigate to the folder I wish to copy into.
I drag and drop the file into said folder on the shared Mac, and an info window appears to show the copy process. There is a progress bar, but the process is never completed, but appears stalled. I go away and come back an hour later. Same thing still happening. I check on my MacBook and the folder is now filled with tens of thousands (literally!) of zero byte files, being added to infinitely.
Talk about annoying! Then the finder balks at putting these in the Trash. Then the Trash balks at being emptied. I found the best thing is to drag out of the contaminated folder the files I keep, put them into a new folder, and trash the entire folder that has been filled with you-know-what.
I also turned off TechTool's Trash history option in Preferences, because that would be driven crazy by his process. I checked Activity Monitor, and Finder was shown as NOT RESPONDING several times during this process. Finally got rid of the files. Now I'm using DropBox to transfer files. Sharing web PDF's between my Mac's has become a hazardous experience.
Anyone else have this experience? Any idea how to prevent it? Or is Apple needing to make a software update for this?

More likely that Techtool needs to make an update.  Ask Micromat.

  • Copy doesn't work and creates zero bytes files that I can't delete.

After installing Yosemite (I am now using version 10.10.1) I had problems copying files.
Sometimes (not always) it doesn't copy files from a folder to another using the simple cmd-c cmd-v procedure. Even if both folders are on the desktop. It creates many empty files (white icons, zero bytes) named as my files, but the copy isn't happening.
The main problem is that I cannot delete the files anyhow. If they are in a folder I can delete the whole folder and empty the trash.
It doesn't happen everytime, but yesterday I had the same problem copying a few videos to the desktop and I can't get rid of them (because I obviously can't delete the desktop folder...).
Can anybody help me? I need to be able to delete those zero bytes files that are now on my desktop.
I tried to drag them into a folder but it wouldn't let me. As well, I tried to copy the same files to the desktop to see if they disappeared, but the new files copied were renamed with 2 (ex. I had the zero byte file called IMG_0705.MOV on my desktop. I tried to paste the same file and it appeared named as IMG_0705 2.MOV).
I don't know what to do...
    Thanks

Take it to an Apple store or AASP. How much it will cost will depend on their determination of the problems. To bad you didn't purchase extended AppleCare. No you don't get your money back for purchasing Lion.

  • IMac went crazy, no fixed but many files become zero bytes in size

I don't even know where to start. I guess first I'll list some background information:
My wife and I share a iMac which she uses it as her workstation for illustration and I use it as Plex Media Server and Transmission etc. So she would normally use it by day, but my account would be always logged in in the background and I use SSH and Remote Desktop to control my account.
And since the ultimate symptom are I don't how many zero byte files, here are some configuration information.
    1) iMac 27" late 2012 with 128 GB Apple SSD and 3TB HDD
    2) A custom fusion drive with 1 logical volume consist of 3 physical volumes.
    3) The configuration is odd because I wanted to use both fusion drive and BOOTCAMP. So there is a BOOTCAMP volume as well.
This happened in the past couple of days. At first my wife was complaining about loosing wifi connection and keyboard connectivity problems. For wifi I typically instructed her to turn wifi on and off or try to reboot the computer. For the keyboard problem, it turned out to be a software problem not Bluetooth because disabling a third part IME seemed to resolve the problem.
Then at one night, she accidentally unplug the iMac while it's on (it's always on, and my wife never reboot or shut it down unless I intervene). No she freaked out as she couldn't remember if she saved her illustration work. Luckily she did. And at this point of time, after booting it up, the PSD file was intact and the latest version. Okay, we moved on. I didn't worry about too much about the power failure because this happened before. And normally Disk Utility in Recovery HD would fix the problem.
Then on the day after, it started loosing sound. So I tried to fix it. Now when I tried to login, it said "Cannot find "login" keychains". Choose "Restore to Default", doesn't work and Finder was keeping crashing and relaunching. Hopping a restart would fixed but it didn't. Then I tried all regular maintaining techniques include fix disk, fix permission, clear all sorts of caches with OnyX. Because there was a power failure, the disk did need some repairing and according to Disk Utility, it appeared OK now, but the problem was still there.
Then I created a new user, works seemingly fine. Deleted my old account and created it agin with the same UID, same problem. Almost all the applications failed to launch except "Notes" and "Maps". It seemed to be a user problem but using the same user ID but new Home folder, the problem came back. This baffled me. I never came across something like this.
Then I hoped upgrade system to 10.10.3 would help (it was 10.10.2). And it did. Now finder can open. Keychains still missing and could be reset to default. But at least I could open Keychains Access now. And from there I created a new login keychain. And my wife's account didn't have this keychain issue, I assumed the situation was under control.
Now, the wired thing happened. My wife fired up Photoshop, it's reporting problems loading preferences. Moved preferences file else where, it said unexpected EOF. Looked it up and ended LAYOUT.psp or something became zero bytes. I deleted it and let photoshop create default one. Now photoshop works. But the PSD my wife panicked about earlier became zero byte.
Verified the disk again, appears to be OK, again, appears to be OK.
The only thing worth mentioning was the amount of something called "Metadata Volume" and "double redundancy". It says "The Logical Volume Family has a 4482 MB Metadata Volume double redundancy". I'm not sure whether or not this is usual.
Now I'm trying to recovery all the PSD files on the disk with a Data Recovery App. But while I'm waiting I found some other files now its zero bytes. This really worries me. And I'm still not sure what cause the problem or even what the problem was or is. I suspect it has something to do with fusion drive as when I do rsync -W --inplace, the speed is normally 20~30 which is a bit low to me.
If you read this far, I really appreciate it. I'm sorry it's so long and unclear. It's because its like nothing I encountered before and the problem is hidden with many little issues on the surface.
But I will try to summarise my question:
    1) What could possibly be the root cause of those problems
    2) What happened to those files.
    3) Is there anyway to recovery them other than standing all the sectors of the disk
    4) Would it be better off with fusion drive.

  • I have hundreds of plist lock file's at zero bytes

In my home library Preferences folder, I'm seeing literally hundreds of plist files ending in "lockfile" - all taking up zero bytes.  Can I delete these?
I have over 700 plist files in total, about 1/4 being these taking up zero bytes.  Anyone know what these are?
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Normal. See:

  • Zero Byte Files

When I ran a smart folder consisting of all files with Zero bytes, I got a dozens of them (including a lot in the preference folder).  Is this normal?  Should I be trashing any of these or do they serve some purpose?  I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.4.

This turned out to be a user error. However, I realized this after fixing the error by deleting the follwoing files:
Check if the issue exists with another user? Continue if the issue is not reproducible.
Delete all the preferences from ~/Library/Preferences/*.*
This fixed the issue. However, while deleting the plist files, I realized that the issue was as a result of bad task I created in Automator. The process was replicating the zero byte files. The issue could've been resolved had I traced my steps back to the time when I first saw the problem. Could've save me some time in customizing my desktop from scratch.

Turn off your memory cleaner, it is worthless to your situation and does NOT clear additional memory for your device, it just wastes battery and resource, and ONLY cleans already deleted memory to a high secure government specification. Nice for the FBI, CIA, drug and p0rn dealers, worthless for you.
    For low memory issues:
First thing? Check the File Free at Options > Status, what is the number at File Free?
Now, leaving the device powered ON, remove the battery of your device, hold a minute, replace and reboot.
What is the File Free now?

And metalink note 1100253.1 states that this issue (java.lang.StackOverflowError) might be caused by a too large set of data to be sorted in the layout file. Recommendation is to removed the sort from the layout file and instead sort the data already in the data definition.

  • Help! Files will send with zero bytes!

I have been trying to send files (pdf mostly) through a dropbox server. Every time I try to, they send with zero bytes. Why is this? I have no idea on how to fix it!

  • Zero byte files not transferred with FTP Adapter

    All,
I am seeing that zero byte files are not being transferred using FTP Adapter (SFTP type). Is there a known bug around this? Please respond if anybody have seen this behavior and resolved this issue. I am using 10.1.3.3.0
    Thanks,
    Dipal

    Thanks Marc,
I still have doubt if that is the case. When I tested the same from 10.1.3.3.1 windows platform and FTP being windows OS zero bytes files transferred OK. Do you think this is to do with OS or SOA version?
    Thanks,
    Dipal

  • Zero bytes files

    Hello.
I'm facing this problem for a few times now and it is very frustrating that I keep loosing all my work.
I use MS Office 2011 (latest install 14.0.1) in my iMac OS X version 10.9.4.
I store my documents in my iPod formatted with MS-Dos Fat32 so I can use it both in Windows and Mac.
A few times now, I came upon excel and word files with Zero bytes losing a bunch of working hours.
The first time it happen after I saved and close an excel document. A couple of day after when I tried to open the document, I realized it was empty. I tied a couple of Office rescue softwares but nothing worked because the file was simply empty!
A second time this happen with a word document. Exactly the same way.
My guess is that has something to do with the file system in the iPod Fat32 (where all my documents are stored) but what is very annoying is the fact that I didn't get any error or so. I saved the documents correctly and closed the programs just to realize that my files are empty.
This problem probably happens with other files as well but I only notice the office documents as I put a lot of working hours on this.
I can't find a solution so far and it's very time consuming to once and a while redo all my work.
    Does anyone experience similar problems?
Urgent solution to solve and/or prevent this problem is needed.
    Thanks

I believe the latest version of Office 2011 for Mac is 14.4.4.  It is definitely not 14.0.1.
Update Office 2011.  Open an Office app (e.g., Word) and do Help > Check for Updates from the menu.

  • Many of my files are empty (zero bytes)

Why are my files blank?  And when i open iCloud it is a mess.

Not sure if this is the same issue I am experiencing:  I upgraded to Mavericks and the new iWorks suite recently on all my machines.  I notice that in iCloud, I have files stating "zero bytes" on my MacMini, while on the MacBook Pro, the files are "normal size" and can be opened.  iCloud is synching the files, but not transferring data.  KeyNote, Pages are working well, but Numbers doesn't transfer the data to the other machines connected to iCloud, only the file name shows up.  iCloud preference is selected to sync Numbers (and the other apps).  This was not happening until after the upgrade.  Any ideas?

  • Safari will not properly Export as PDF. Files have zero bytes.

Safari will not properly Export as PDF. Files have zero bytes.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
