Zero Out All Data and GUID

I'm just formatting a second hard drive for backup purposes. I've decided I want to zero out all data to ensure that the drive maps out bad blocks, and then I'm going to create a GUID partition just in case I decide to make it a boot drive in future.
Three questions:
Why doesn't Disk Utility give you the option of Zero Out All Data and GUID partition as a 'one stop shop'?
Is there any disadvantage to having a GUID partition on a backup drive?
Are any remapped bad blocks found during the zeroing process retained after the GUID partition erase?

Zeroing and GUID don't always go together. AIUI, GUID is only compulsory for a boot partition for Intel Macs; and it is recommended for volumes used by Time Machine. Otherwise, Apple Partition Map will usually be required since it can be read by both Intel and PowerPC Macs.
The disadvantage to having a GUID partition is that it won't be readable by PowerPC Macs.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

Have the purchaser go to Settings/Store, tap your Apple ID and then choose Sign out.
The purchaser will then need to tap Sign in and enter their own Apple ID for their iTunes account.

Developer portal documentation out of date and frustrating

FYI: this is just a rant to apple and a big thank you to this forum!
I have solved all my issues and finally have apps running on my testing device.. but no thanks to the out of date and confusing documentation. If it wasn't for this forum, I still will be figuring out how to select provisional profile in XCode.
Problems with the documentation:
1. "Installing iPhone OS":
I spent hours looking for "OS X iPhone 2.0 .ipsw" on the dev center. I thought to myself, do I really need this? I convinced myself, it must be a special version of iphoneOS for developing. I mean why else would it still be in "how to guide". Thanks to the forum for telling me otherwise. I still do not know if you have to "restore ipod". I ended up restore ipod just in case.
2. Generating an App ID:
What's with the asterick.. At least the document got that right and specifically tells you to enter an "*". But if you should always enter an asterick then why even make that a step to perform. Is there any reason to not enter an "*"??
3.Running your Development App on a provisioned device
Here's where I had the biggest trouble:
"In the Project Info window, select the ‘Build’ tab and enter “iPhone Developer: <YourFirstName> <YourLastName> in the ‘Code Signing Identity’ > ’Any iPhone OS’ field setting. This is the also the Common Name of your iPhone Development Certificate."
Ugh FIX THAT LINE in documentation. It drove me nuts.. you see I placed "IPhone Developer: Rick Mullinix" in for Code Signing Identity. Which seems correct, that is my identity. But no, that leads to not seeing provisioning profile as a choose.
Thanks to the forum, I changed the identity to "IPhone Developer".. and it works!
But that leads to another question... how does "IPhone Developer" identitfy anybody? We are all "IPhone Developer(s)".. I guess we are all thought to be the same by Apple.. might as well make everyone place "Cash Cow" as their identity.
4. Over all:
I am still confused by all the certificates, profiles, key chains.. seems all magical to me, it works and all, but I wish documentation had better wording and definitions to help my understanding.

1. No, you don't have to restore your ipod. As long as you're running the fw 2.0 (and above) your ipod is ready for development.

3. Just look into your keychain under Certificates. There should be one named "iPhone Developer: <your> <name>". Enter that line in xcode. "iPhone Developer: Jon Doe" for example. You just have to enter the exact name of the certificate in xcode.
4. Yeah, that stuff is pretty confusing. My Dev-Account got activated yesterday and I spent the whole day just setting up my certs and tax-info. It was really frustrating and time consuming. I'm (negatively) surprised by the ammount of real paperwork you have to do. It just doesn't get in my head that you have to print and snailmail that many letters for something like an internet application store. But that's another story

How to zero out my data for chart

I am very new to LabVIEW so please be patient.
I am aquiring 12 channels of 0-10 volt signals through a cDAQ-9174 chassis and 9205 module on Labview 11. I am using producer/consumer loops to the write the data to a file also sent to two charts. I want to keep the data sent to the file as is, and then tare (zero out) the data going to the charts.
I have attached the code. Please ignore the diagram dissable structure and it's contents.

Are you supposed to get the this offset each time you press Start, or only the first time? For example, if I press "Start Test A", run it for 5 minutes, and then press it again to stop it, and then 10 minutes later I press it again to start it, do you need to update the offsets, or would you use the ones from 15 minutes earlier? Since the producer consumer loops are running all the time, I would suggest using a shift register/feedback node to keep track of whether you've acquired the offset values. Reset the flag when you turn off the test if you want to get the offsets "fresh" on the next start. As for where to save this, a simple local variable will work (yes, I said local variable, all you local variable haters out there!). In this case you will not run into a race condition.
Note: you do not need to use your own buttons for controlling the visibility of plots. In LabVIEW 2011 that's built-in. Show the plot legend, and then right-click on the legend and select Visible Items -> Plot Visibility Checkbox.
See attached modification for one possible implementation. Note that I removed the enqueing done in the False case in the producer loop since I did not see much point in enqueuing when you didn't actually get any data.

Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking". Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

Plugin check (incorrectly) says my acrobat plugin is out of date and takes me to a reader install

I have Adobe Acrobat X 10.1.6. and the plugin checker says its out of date.
I don't think it is, it's just not Abobe Reader.
I don't want to have both Acrobat and Reader. When I do, then there's two different plug-ins in FF, but they both have the same names, but they seem independent and it just seems messy. It looks as if the same plugin is on there twice, one updated and one not updated, but it doesn't seem possible to remove either one. Which is actually good, b/c one is for Acrobat and one is for Reader, which I didn't realize until I started looking into all this mess. Also, there's no point in me having Reader if I have Acrobat.
It's weird that the plugin checker says the Acrobat plugin is out of date and directs me to the Reader 11 download to update it, eventhough I already have Reader 11 (thanks to the plugin checker). In other words, the one that is updated is Reader, but the one that is supposedly out of date just directs me to a DL that I already have installed. Sorry if its confusing.
Now I downloaded it, and have since uninstalled it, but it seems well-known that there can be issues with dl'ing Reader when Acrobat is already uninstalled (or something), as well as when uninstalling one or the other, so now I am nervous, because I didn't take any precautionary measures when dl'ing or uninstalling Reader.
I almost feel like I should uninstall everything (if possible) and just start fresh.
Anyway, point is, the plugin checker is wrong, right?

Hi jonadelman, if you have 10.1.6, you are current. It's just that the plugin checker doesn't know that both 10.1.6 and 11.0.2 are current.

kglad, I never get to any error code so your link can't help.
Jeff, I looked at your link and
a) again, I never make it to an error code
b) I'm definitely connected to the internet
c) I can access secure sites; I tried connecting with the firewall disabled and the same thing happened, so I don't believe it's a firewall issue.
d) I don't understand the checking host sites - this is far too complicated for a novice user. It should not be this difficult to get a software running. I don't want to mess with these kinds of settings.
e) I followed the steps for the global sign in root CA and my screen looks the same as the picture here.
I can't activate the software offline as there is no option to generate a response code when I click on having trouble connecting to the internet. All I get is a prompt to change my password.
If the problem were simply connectivity from my computer, then why does the box completely freeze? Can't cancel, can't click on the little X to close it, can't right click on the box to close it. I have to reboot every single time. I know others have had the same problem and I haven't found any answers that I could apply.

Boot into the Recovery HD (restart holding down Command+r). Launch Disk Utility and erase the drive (all data will be gone forever so make sure you have a reliable copy of any valuable data). Quit out of Disk Utility when formatting is complete and select re-install OS X (you'll need an Internet connection).

is there a way zero out all the sliders on all images in a folder? lightroom is applying what appears to be auto tone on all images as each images sliders are different. all import options are shut off or on 'none' so i have no clue why LR is applying these settings. When I reset images it puts them back the imported auto settings. So lightroom is perceiving those as baseline. Please help!

Hi Rikk, thank you for the quick reply, I tried what you said and while this SHOULD have worked, for some reason it did not.
So i'm importing 1500 RAW Canon 5dmkII files from my CF cards. under "apply during import" everything is marked as NONE.
import goes smooth, all files brought in. and then Lightroom starts applying what appears to be auto tone. The reason i think it's auto tone is that the sliders are different from image to image, so it's not holding on particular prest.
As a general rule i don't use presets, occasionally i'll use LR punch but i almost never use presets, or do mass bulk setting changes.
This is all the info, I have been doing this same process since LR3 and never had this issue. Hope that helps clear things up and thanks again!

You don't need to zero-out the data unless you're really really paranoid that someone will actually try to harvest your info from the drive...which isn't likely. Plus, zeroing the data can take hours..even days.
Will I be able to re-install the OSx after this is done?

Hi MiMattheMac, you probably won't have any problems but just be aware upgrading from Snow Leopard to anything later is a big leap. Old, PowerPC - only programs won't work, for example, and even more recently developed programs won't work if their developers have not been updating them for recent OS X versions.
If you haven't made a backup of your Mac yet, and you consider the information on it important, please consider doing that. It is the only practicable way to "undo" an OS X upgrade should you want to. Merely having a backup seems to preclude the need to ever use it.
If the information on your Mac is not important to you, upgrading to Mavericks is even easier since you can completely erase the Mac first.
In any event let the download complete.
If this raises any concerns about installing it, and you need to ask questions to alleviate those concerns, you can just close this window when it eventually appears:
The 5 GB downloaded file will not be deleted and will remain available until you actually install Mavericks. You can do that at any time convenient for you.

It's really been puzzling me, I've never logged in the Apple site on a laptop before - I have been getting the same message 'Unable to verify iCloud account' every time I try and erase all data and content from my iPhone 4s. When I go to iCloud on my laptop and sign in using my Apple ID it signs me in. These are the same log in details I am prompted for when trying to erase all data/content from the phone. Yes, I recently changed my Apple ID password - around 2 weeks ago when I bought the phone.
Does anyone know if you need to do the IOS update to be able to restore all data and content? I have not installed the new update on either of my iPhone 4S's yet.
The phone I am trying to reset was sold to me by a friend and when it was it had already been reset and it was on the language selection screen.
