Zfs volumes broken post os patching - spec_getpage called for character...

Hello all,
I have a T2000 (sol10 8/07), OBP 4.27.7, SUNWldm 1.0.1, zfs version 4 that post os patching (using the Sept 08 Recommended patch cluster) now cannot use zfs volumes as virtual disks. Files on zfs filesystems used for boot devices however work fine (ie the ZFS for boot disk setup as described in the admin guide). Whenever I try and "bind-domain" on a guest domain using a zfs volume I see the following in /var/adm/messages on the primary domain...

syslog tail spins and chews up close to 100% of the cpu. The only way to recover the primary domain is to reboot it (and in some cases power cycle). On the system console I also see the following..

A guest ldom config that contains use a zfs volume which kills things when you run bind-domain below..

Note that if I remove vdisk1 from the guest domain, bind-domain works fine, no issues. So this is an issue just with the zfs volumes used as virtual disks. I also created a new zfs volume, added it to the primary-vds0 and the guest domain. However on bind-domain, same error/issue.

  • Using a ZFS volume with encryption on as the Virtual disk in a Sparc VM

    Hi guys,
Working my way through understanding how virtualization works in VM for Sparc. One question I thought of deals with having encryption turned on in a ZFS volume. If I create a volume with encryption ON, and then attach that volume as the sole virtual disk in a guest domain, will the virtualization still work? Has anyone else dealt with a scenario like this? I'm about to try it now, I'll report back with my findings.

From my understanding, if you create a ZFS disk with encryption ON, mount it on Solaris, and after that present that to the VM, you should not have problems. The encryption will work between the volume and Solaris. To the guest vm, it should be transparent.

  • Add zfs volume to Solaris 8 branded zone

    Hi,
I need to add a zfs volume to a Solaris 8 branded zone.
Basically ive created the zvol and added the following to the zone configuration.
    # zonecfg -z test
    zonecfg:test> add device
    zonecfg:test:device> set match=/dev/zvol/dsk/sol8/vol
    zonecfg:test:device> end
When I boot the zone it comes up ok but I am unable to see the device, nothing in format, /dev/dsk etc etc
Ive also tried to setmatch to the raw device as well to no avail.
Basically I have numerous zvols to add and dont really want a load of mount points from the global zone then lofs back to the local zone
    Any ideas please??
    Thanks...

Thanks but that's why I created zfs volumes and newfs'ed them to create UFS and presented those to the zone.
In the end I just create a script in /etc/rc2.d and mounted the filesystems in there.

Next I check Shadow Copies details from volume properties (right click on C or other drive then select properties then click on Shadow Copies Tab) and found it is showing the same error code..
From this error it is clear that the issue is inside the registry hive and due to junk hive shadow copies services not able to working properly.
For me the server have two disk we check disk signature at MBR and found the disk signature was.
    Signature disk 0 : 9351912b
    Signature disk 0 : FDFBE035
But at registry we found lot of nonexistance signature. Which indicate lot of junk valu inside registry.
Now how can we resolve this issue?
It is very simple just delete the registry key “volume” (registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\STORAGE\Volume”) and reboot the server it will “Volume” registry hive automatically.
    Note:
When you remove registry key it is showing error unable to delete, then please right click on it select permission then take ownership and assign full permission to your login account.
Please be careful when you delete registry key because system can fully crashed if you delete or modify wrong registry key.
Your can take a backup of the registry key by exporting.

  • How to snapshot zfs volume

    Hi All,
did anyone have expereience with ZFS volume snapshot and clone? what I am doing here is: create a zfs volume and present it as root disk to LDOM guest domain. I like to have the flexibility to snapshot and clone the volume before any maintenance. We have tested using image files already. We are comparing performance and maintenance complexity of using both image file and zfs volume.
    Any suggestion is welcome.
    Thanks,

Thanks! could you please provide more details? zfs snapshot of file system is straightforward. But to snapshot volumes (which underline are 0 & 1s), it does not seem to be that easy. FYI, the zfs volume is only partitioned inside guest domain. From ldom controller domain, prtvtoc shows only one slice. That means inside LDOM controller domain, this volume just looks like raw device.

  • Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes

What kind of overhead is involved if we configure Oracle ASM on top of ZFS volumes? Has anyone performed benchmarks using this scheme?

I've not done it personally with DNFS but I have created a multitude of clusters with NetApp on their NFS file system without ever having an issue other than saving a lot of money.

  • LDOM 1.1 migration with boot disk on zfs volume

I have a big disk and set up a few zfs volumes for guest domains.
Have anybody successfully configure LDOM 1.1 to migrate guest domains
between two hosts when guest domais are on zfs volumes.
The two hosts shares the FC LUN through SAN.
    Any suggestions?
    cm

Can you provide a working example of this? I fail to see any benefit of using files as bootdisks via NFS. It seems you will need a new bootdisk file (approx. 12g for our env.) for every ldom guest. First, how do you save storage space? Then, how do you manage additional storage devices for applications which require a small amount of additional disk space (say 50g)? If you use file allocation (mkfile on NFS allocated to an ldom) then you've gotten yourself into potentially disastrous performance issues (virtual guest storage -> virtual I/O management -> file -> NFS -> ZFS -> SAN Luns). The only solution to the problem as I see it is to use a clustered file system, which is not currently a viable option for the following reasons:
    1. Veritas CVM does not support Branded Zones in an ldom = we can't use it
    2. ZFS is not a cluster file system
So, this begs the question, what is the "Best Practice" for setting up ldom environments (with migration ability) from a storage perspective? What is the Sun recommendation on this?

  • System volume (and therefore ringing volume) reduces when recieving an incomming call

I set all volumes to full in Lync ,as well as the system master volume. Soon as a phone call comes in I can see the volume slider move to from 100% to around 50%. This is
very werid and is happening on multiple PC's. It started when I upgraded from the Communicator client to the Lync client.
    Any ideas on this weirdness??
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,
If you wanna get 100% volume, do as follows.
    1.
Open "Volume Mixer – Speakers" and move the slider bar to 100.
    2.
Make a call. And in the conversation window, click "Adjust volume or mute speakers" icon, and move the slider to 100.
    Next time,
when you make a call, the volume will be 100%. Please have a try.
    In addition, provide this
    article for reference. Hope useful.

    업무에 참고하시기 바랍니다.

    David,
You are right, theer are some changes incorporated in the latest MLR # 16 on the configurations files and on the dehydration store metrics(such as performance, fields,..).
However, I would not suggest to continue working on olite, even for Development/Test purposes as you might get stuck with strange errors...and the only solution would be to re-install SOA Suite if your olite gets corrupted. There might be ways to gets your olite back to position, but trust me..its not so simple.
Also, when you develop and stress test all your testcase scenarios in an TEST Adv installation, its simple to mimic the same in actual production box, as you exactly know its behavior.
So, go for a brand new SOA 10.1.3.4 MLR # 5 (or) 10.1.3.3.1 MLR # 16 SOA Suite Advanced installation with Oracle DB 10.2.0.3 as its dehydration store.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers
    Anirudh Pucha

  • WIDE-SCALE CALL FOR INPUT: The NSS 8TB Size Limit

NOTE: This thread is purposefully double-posted in the OES:Linux and OES:NetWare storage forums.
Like most of you -- I'm just a Novell customer. While I do not represent Novell in any official capacity, this call for information has been encouraged by Novell's OES team.
During this week's OES2SP3 Beta conference call, a topic was brought up again regarding the aging size limit of the NSS file-system.
Quite simply the current NSS file system size limit of 8TB is too small for modern and emerging needs. The reality is that customer data is trending larger all the time. A failure to act quickly will eventually mean the obsolecense of this file-system and apathy in the customer base.
Novell will be monitoring this thread. If sufficent interest can be documented then Novell could more easily marshall the needed internal resources to make this happen sooner rather than later.
WHAT THIS THREAD IS -NOT- INTENDED TO BECOME
    - A discussion of how one could use DFS or other techniques to mitigate NSS' size constraint.
    - A string of suggestions for alternative file-systems such as NTFS or Posix-based one like XFS, BTRFS, EXT4
    - A debate on why people should not want a larger-than-8TB file-system. That debate is effectively over -- almost every major player in the file-system space is doing anything from 64TB into the Exabyte range (XFS, NTFS, others).
WHAT THIS THREAD IS INTENDED FOR
    - A tally of other Novell customers who DO see the need and would prefer to keep this data on NSS if it could accomodate it. Your post can be as simple as: "This is important to us, too!" Also helpful, though not required, would be a brief statement or case-study of what your needs would look like (types of data, overall size and quantity of files).
On the beta calls, several of us have been vocal supporters for this change. We now hope that by casting a wider net that we can find others who perhaps have been suffering in silence.

I have a couple instances where the 8TB limit is "inconvenient," but all are for comparatively small numbers of large files. As a practical matter the bottlenecks in the metadata are reached far in advance of the storage limits. For example, how would a NSS volume perform with 100,000,000 files on it? This is the biggest issue.
So sure, there are things which could be done to expand NSS. As a practical matter the easiest would be to support larger block sizes. So 8TB becomes 16, becomes 32, ... all the way to 128TB. I assume 128TB would handle your needs. Of course how you back up and restore 128 TB in less than the age of the Universe, that's up to you.

The IP communications domain has matured beyond providing VoIP only
services. Universities, enterprises, businesses and individual
consumers routinely use VoIP. The focus of IP communications is now on
the operations, management, administration and provisioning aspects of
large-scale, reliable and secure communication systems. To this extent,
the research and standardization work now includes log file analysis,
session tracing across proxy meshes and overload control. As IP
communications grapples with these issues, newer technologies in the
form of cloud-based IP communication systems; peer-to-peer VoIP
networks; use of IP communications in virtual worlds; social
networks and IP communications are starting to assert a strong
presence in the IP communications domain.
The aim of the IPTComm conference is to serve as a platform for
researchers from academia, research labs, industry and government to
share their ideas, views, results and experiences in the field of
IP-based telecommunication. IPTComm will include presentations of
theoretical and experimental achievements, innovative systems,
prototyping efforts, case studies, and advancements in technology.
We invite authors to submit papers in the following and related areas:

  • IPTComm 2010: Call for Papers

    ****** NOTE: Submissions due on Mar 5, 2010 *******
    IPTCOMM 2010
    ============
The Fourth Conference on Principles, Systems and Applications of
    IP Telecommunications
    August 2 and 3, 2010
    Leibniz Supercomputing Center
    Munich, Germany
    http://iptcomm.org

    AUTHOR INFORMATION
    ==================
Papers submission is handled by EDAS (http://edas.info/N8459).
IPTComm solicits full papers up to 12 pages in length, in two-column
    ACM conference format
    (see http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). All
submissions must describe original research, not published nor
currently under review for another conference or journal. The program
committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be
published in the conference proceedings. Pending cooperation agreements,
papers will also be published in the ACM Digital Library.
In 2010, IPTComm will be accepting short papers of at least 5 pages and
no more than 6 pages. The aim of the short paper category is to help
maintain a published record of work carried out as well as facilitate
future affiliations and foster collaborative work. Short papers are
subject to the same rigorous review process as full papers and follow
the same submission process, schedule and expectation of presentation as
    the full papers.
