Zigzag distortion in video

I just purchased a video from ITMS and I am getting zig-zag distortion while playing it in iTunes. I can't tell if there is a problem with the video itself or with the playback, although I haven't experienced this before.
It sort of comes and goes and I haven't been able to capture it with a screenshot. But basically what it is is a big horizontal zigzag in the middle of the screen. It seems to happen uniformly when the camera is moving from side to side, which makes me think it might be a problem with the video file itself, but I don't really know.
Any ideas? I suppose I can just report this.

Well, unfortunately those solutions didn't help. Actually, they just made it worse. With the "GDI only" option, the video was very jagged, got like 2 FPS, even though I have a Core 2 Duo processor and a fast graphics card. With just the 3D video acceleration turned off, I got basically the same thing as the zigzag except up and down the entire screen instead of just in the middle.
I thought it might be because I had NTFS compression turned on for my media files, but the same thing is happening even after I turned it off.
I hate this. iTunes/QuickTime is the only program I know that can't even manage to play a simple video file correctly. If Windows Media Player, Real Player, DivX Player, etc can do it, why is Apple having such a hard time with this? Yet thanks to the DRM, I can't try to play this in other players.
It's this sort of behavior that is the reason I will never buy a Mac. I like my iPod, but it seems when you get to software that Apple manages to fail at doing the most basic things that other companies have mastered a long time ago.
Between that and the DRM (which unlike the music files you can't subvert by burning it to disc and ripping it back again), I'm gonna stick to DVD's and stop buying TV shows from ITMS.

  • How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline?

FCP keeps auto distorting my video when I drag it into the timeline. It keeps setting the motion aspect ratio to -12.5, then when I set it to 0 and render, the video has lost significant quality even though I have my motion render settings to: best. I figure it is this motion distort which is ruining my quality on render because the avi from the camera is ridiculously clean and un-pixelated. How do I keep FCP from auto-distorting my video? It makes no sense that it does, because at -12.5 aspect ratio, FCP is creating a letterbox for my video. I just want the video to fill the entire canvas that I chose! There must be a setting somewhere that I have missed, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Please help!
I have a video shot on my Pentax K-r that is 1280x 720p 25fps. When run it in quicktime pro, the inspector affirms this sizing. And in QTpro there is no letterbox present when the original is played.
In FCP I have the sequence settings at:
    HDTV 720p (16:9) (which is 1280 720)
    Timebase: 25
I have tried to turn anamorphic on, then off in the clip format settings, and also turn the anamorphic on and off in the sequence settings. No combination seems to correct the problem.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you,
    ML

Hi I have done some more digging and found this:
    1) In the bottom left corner of FCPX, click the film reel so that you can see all your projects:
    2) Select the project you are having problems with and then in the inspector window, click on the spanner icon in the lower right side:
    3) Finally a window appears so that you can choose the settings for the video you are using:
    Hope that helps

  • Monitors problem on startup - weird flickering, zigzag distortion

    I'm at work on a G5 PowerPC Dual 2GHz, OS 10.5.6.
After upgrading to Leopard in a different studio, and then switching this CPU to a studio with two Samsung 214T 21" Monitors connected via DVI, a problem has started. When starting up, both monitors show a distorted desktop display. The displays both show the same broken up vertical columns, about 3 inches wide, and every other column shows a sliced-up portion of the desktop. Also there is weird zigzag flickering in some columns. As soon as I select any monitor resolution, or turn on mirrored displays, the monitors act fine. It seems like it may be a sync-type of problem but I'm not sure.
This problem did not happen in the original studio when the CPU was upgraded to Leopard. That studio had two Samsung VGA displays connected with DVI adapters.
Please note that I tried resetting PRAM, I gave it 4 chimes.
Also note this CPU is used for sound editing, It has Pro Tools HD hardware, as well as a recently installed Blackmagic Decklink PCI video capture board.

I am having the same problem, and i have seen reports of similar effects with other models of HP laptops. It appears to mainly be a problem in the signal from the graphics card to the screen, so either the plugin on the motherboard, the plugin on the back of the LCD screen, or the wire ribbon itself. I isolated mine to being a loose wire ribbon and by reseating the connection on the LCD screen, mine was repaired. I still keep an eye on it because if one place can be effected by socket creep, they all can. (socket creep is where a plugin or socket location disconnects over time for no other reason other than age)
Give it a try if you know what you are doing in that aspect, if not you may need to take it to a servicing center and have them do it. I suggest learning how to do it yourself, as once you begin learning how to maintenance your own machine, you can troubleshoot many different problems based on experiences with others.
Hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

  • Reducing audio distortion on video imported into iMovie.

Hello, I am trying to clean up the audio on some videos that I imported from a friends cell phone. The video was taken at a concert up close. It seems that the cell phone's speakers were overwhelmed by the
volume at the concert and the audio on the video is quite distorted to say the least.
Is there anyway that the audio can be enhanced/cleaned up using the audio adjustments in the clip portion of iMovie, or I am I just doomed to have great video and hideous audio quality??? I have tried playing around with the audio adjustments on each clip, but I am new to iMovie and what I have been trying has not seemed to work to well.
I would appreciate any advice anyone may have on this matter.
          Thank you!!!

iMovie 11 is well worth the cost. Get it for $14.99 in the new App Store.
In iMovie 11, you need to get a free app called MPEG Streamclip. You need to have it anyway. It is like a Swiss Army Knife for people who make videos. Right-click on the clip in iMovie. Select Reveal in Finder. Drag this clip to MPEG Streamclip. Move the playhead to the frame you want, and click FILE/EXPORT FRAME. Pick Jpeg, TIFF, or PNG and you are done.
In iMovie 08, the above procedure works fine as well. However, there is another way, which I have documented [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2255510]

  • Saving from FCP to QuickTime is distorting the video

Hello all - I'm repeatedly trying to save a FCP sequence as a QuickTime file so that I can import into iDVD. Each time I save it and then open the file in either QuickTime or iDVD, the faces in the video appear very thin (as if I had converted to a widescreen format or filter - but I didn't).
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks so much for the help.

OK, here's what's going on. When the anamorphic flag is checked, the image is displayed as 16:9. The actual media is 4:3 and it is distorted horizontally to acheive the "wide screen" look. I don't work in IDVD, so I'm not sure how you make an anamorphic dvd with it. It's pretty simple in DVDSP. As far as the quicktime goes, you can set the dimensions of your export to properly reflect the "widescreen" look, or simply change how quicktime player displays the file. I'm not on my system at the moment, but do a little exploring in quicktime player and you should be able to find it. I don't have the correct pixel dimensions on hand for the quicktime export, but if you're sole purpose is creating a dvd, that's not the way to go.

  • Strange audio distortion in video

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (2.3 ghz, 4 gb of ram, running dual displays) and for the last nine months or so I've been having bizarre (horribly angry robot voices) distortion in audio when running video, seemingly for no reason. Sometimes an action as simple as moving the mouse cursor will set it off, other times it just happens out of nowhere.
Typically this happens when using a flash program, streaming on Netflix, or running VLC. It's also happened with itunes and when watching dvds. When the problem starts I can make it go away by shutting down the offending application (typically a browser and VLC) and relaunching. If I don't shut down it affects all audio on the computer. This happens literally eight times a day, as is accompanied by twice-monthly kernel panics.
It happens regardless of whether I have my second display plugged in. It also happens regardless of the number of applications that are running. I can restart, have nothing running except the single tab in Firefox playing video, and it won't work. I've checked the usage via a widget called istat pro, and nothing seems amiss. I've also tried a complete hard disk wipe and reinstall, and it made no difference. I even went as far as having a friend in IT use the ASD disc ten times and it didn't catch anything.
Does anyone have any ideas? This is incredibly annoying and I would greatly appreciate any help.

is there a way to test for this, or would the problem have to be occurring while it is being tested in order to confirm?
This would be very hard to detect the exact cause. As the guy referred to, Apple techs just replace parts until the issue is solved.

  • Distortion in video on demand

Regular HD and standard proms are clear, but whenever I attempt to use Video on Demand the picture is distorted. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a fix?

Usually I would suggest rebooting the router first along with the cable box if this begins to happen.

  • Why do added titles distort my video?

This is my first time using any kind of editing software. No problems importing the video. When I add titles to the clips, any object with a straight line becomes distorted in the video. Is there an explanation for this or do I just have to get used to it?

Which iMovie version are you using?
In iMovie HD 5.0.1 added titles distorted interlacing lines in the underlying video.
But this was fixed in in later versions for NTSC and QT 7 fixed this also for PAL.

  • Timewarp Distorting My Video Clip?

So I have been using After Effects to edit my video game clips I recorded with a HD PVR for a little while and it has been going great.  There is just one problem and that is that whenever I use Timewarp to slow down a clip it puts this weird distortion on the clip and I know its not supposed to do this because every video I see of someone using Timewarp it works fine.  Does anyone have any ideas why it is distorting my clip?

  • Using the EQ produces distortions (iPod video)

I have a brand new iPod video.
Sound is really great, but ..
.. when I use any equalzer setting that increases the bass, the bass is distorted!
e.g. with Madonnas 'Love Profusion' and with EQ 'Loudness'.
Is this a bug a the iPod or has mine a defect?
Sure, when increasing the bass, the bit resolution of 16bits is not enough. If the iPod has only 16 bits, then it has to reduce the volume when the bass is increased.
iPod Video 60 GB   Windows XP Pro

    Hi,
I would guess that what you are experiencing is down to your headphones being overloaded. It's like turning the bass up on any Hi-fi or stereo system - the more bass, the more distortion eventually.
Try another setting, such as Treble Boost or Flat, and the problem should disappear.

i can scew the object but thats about it like on the b) sample but i want to snap it like on a)sample.is it possible to be done in flash or is it a adobe premirer task?
    thank you

    Hi,
I have my videos on a separate machine that's networked to my MacBook. iTunes reads it directly off the other machine. Obviously I have to be home and networked to get access to them, but you don't have to have your files on the machine that has iTunes installed. My other machine is actually a windows box too.

  • Color Error Distortion In Video After Render

    Hey fellow Adobe'ers,
I have somewhat of a condundrum that I hope you will be able to fix.
After rendering a set of imported After Effects files in Premiere Pro, the video starts randomly popping up SMPTE color bar layers. Any idea on how to get rid of these? Thank you for your answers.

I see several possible issues, though they might not play into what you are experiencing:
    I have 6 GB free
That means that your HDD is nearly at capacity. At about 70% of capacity, the performance will decline, and more so, as capacity is neared, often leading to total failure. I would first clean up your C:\, and give much more "breathing room," to the OS and to the programs.
WD My Passport 070A USB HD 720 GB (All video files are on this drive) I have 60+ GB free
USB externals have proved problematic for many, when they attempt to edit to/from. This ARTICLE goes into more detail.
Video card is a generic Intel "HD Graphics" integrated card
The Intel embedded chips are good, BUT the total lack of driver support renders them nearly useless when either image, or video editing is done. Not sure if your computer mfgr. has a better, newer driver on their Web site, but I would look for one. Do not trust your OS, or any utility, to tell you if your video driver is up to date, as it will likely be at least 6 mos. wrong.
Like I said, not sure that any of these are the exact culprit, but they can contribute to problems, and are worth noting.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Extracted audio caused distortion in video timing

    i need help!
i am making a music video for class.
from the edit menu i chose select all and then extracted audio, so that I could go in individually to each clip and delete the audio i did not need. when i tried to do a test delete and played the clip back the audio was gone like i wanted, but the song and the video were totally out of sync and my computer froze up and just played a bleep of sound here and showed a random clip there.
it took forever to unfreeze. it is still out of sync even after restarting my computer. the audio is still extracted from all the clips but the video and audio are still totally out of sync. I'm thinking if I could just unextract all the audio or revert it back to the original...that would solve the problem, but it will not let me do so?
some of the audio files are still available in my trash including audio for the whole video.
    any suggestions?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
'Extracting' audio just copies it and puts it in an audio track underneath the video, and then silences the original sound within the video clip. So it does two jobs, instead of just silencing the audio.
To silence audio within a clip, just click on the little clock, at lower left, to show the full Timeline view, and then in the Menu at the top of the screen use 'View' and 'Show Clip Volume Levels'. You can then select a clip, and click on the little loudspeaker icon, alongside the volume level "Clip: 100%".
Your audio going out of sync sounds more like iMovie 4 rather than iMovie5/HD. But if your hard disc is close to being full on the iBook, that can cause problems for iMovie.
To fix things, you could try the following:
    (1) As your audio should now be in separate audio clips beneath the video, you should be able to click on and then slide ('drag') your audio clips to line them up with the appropriate video, then use Apple+'L' to Lock the audio to the relevant video.
    (2) As all the original audio remains within the video clips, but it's just had its volume reduced to zero during the 'Extraction', you could select the video clips, and return their volume up to 100% with that little volume slider at the bottom of the screen. When you've done that, UN-TICK (un-check) the little boxes at the extreme right which switches on or off the sound from the audio track(s), so that only the video track is ticked, and try playing the video: all the audio should now be back. If that plays OK, you can then just delete all the separate audio in the track(s) beneath, then Save your project. Then re-tick (check) the audio track boxes again, so that they're not disabled.
The original audio should now be restored, and you can do what you like with it. But it's always better to just reduce to zero any sound you don't want, rather than duplicating it - by 'Extracting' - and then just silencing the original ..and possibly the duplicate. That doubles the work which your Mac has to do during playback ..as it has to keep looking for the separate audio instructions, in its master project file, as well as playing back the video.
So (a) make sure that you've LOTS of spare space on your iBook, and (b) don't strain it too much by giving it too much to do, and (c) things may go smoother if you keep your video projects on a separate, fast (5400rpm or faster) FireWire hard disc (formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' or 'HFS+') plugged in to the iBook, rather than on the iBook's internal disc, and (d) make sure that you have no other programs running when you're editing with iMovie ..as iMovie needs as much of the Mac's attention as possible, and may be sluggish on a slow Mac if there are other programs running.
    Hope this helps..

  • Distortion of Video upon Import

Hey guys I’ve been searching around for a few days now and haven't been able to come up with any answers so he goes one of my last attempts.
The other day i was trying to make some random stuff and i captured a test video and imported it to premiere, all went well so i continued. Once i finished capturing the video i needed (100% unchanged settings) i proceeded to import, only for the bottom 3/8ths of the screen to be a green bar. I checked the source video and it was perfectly fine. I shut down and restarted, uploaded the other clips as well and everything is coming out great except for this one particular clip (had this problem once before but i didn’t check the source and wrote it off as a corrupt source) the only difference in the clips are length and the one coming corrupt is larger but it’s only an hour video and that shouldn’t be an issue...
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
