Zip files in Mail.

Is there any way to open Zip or other compressed files in Mail on the iphone?

Try downloading GoodReader app. Not only does it read PDF and many other formats it will unzip mail attachments if you open it with the app.

  • Opening a zip file from Mail - what should happen?

    I've been using a Mac for a little under a week so bear with me...!
    I receive a zip file in Mail and I want to open it, so naturally I click on it. I get a "may contain an application" warning. I click "Open". A window briefly appears with an "Unarchiving" progress bar, then vanishes. And that's it!
    Is this expected behaviour, or has something messed up here (most likely me!)? I would expect some sort of helper application to open showing the zip contents maybe?
    Thanks!
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
    Welcome to the discussions and to Macs!
    Zip has un-zipped the attachment contents into the place where the zip file was kept. Often that's a clever thing for it to do, but in this case the location is a place Mail chose rather than you!
    You might look in <home>/Library/Mail Downloads. If not, use Spotlight to search for the zip file by name. That directory will also hold the unzipped contents.
    Next time: Drag the zip file from the email to your desktop, then double-click it to unzip. The contents will show right up on the desktop too.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Cannot open ZIP files in mail

    Anyone else having trouble opening zip files in mail. It does not work on iPhone either - but that was not an issue since very rarely does one want to open a large document.
    Any solutions out there ?

    Zips and other archived/compressed files won't work as expected on an iPad since you can't just preview/view the contents directly from the attachment currently like you can with quicktime-compatible or other common media formats. Basically you would need to be able to save the zip file to the finder and extract it, and view the contents from there. But since the iPad doesn't have anything like a user-accessible Finder, it's tricky to implement.
    There may be third-party apps that deal with this eventually (or maybe even something from the upcoming 4.0 software, who knows), but it would probably be easier to just have people send you attachments that aren't zipped up for now.

  • How to save photos in a zip file in ios7

    My wife's ipad2 is running ios 7.
    She has zip files in her email containing photos.  Clicking on the zip file in Mail opens the photos.  Is this being done outside the Mail app?
    Anyway, we want to save the photos to a photo roll in the Photo app.  Holding a finger to the photo brings up a "copy" option and nothing else.  Is it necessary to first unzip the attachment to save in the Photo app?  If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Owen

    I researched this a little.  GoodReader for IOS 7 seems to be still a work in progress.
    A recent article in MacWorld:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2049370/ios-7-adds-support-for-zipped-attachment s-in-mail-messages-with-quick-look.html
    says that in IOS 7 you can unzip in Mail and
    "You can then send individual files to the program of your choice with Open In, save images to your camera roll".
    I have not been able to get an "Open In" choice by tapping anything.  Am I missing something?  Thanks,
    Owen

  • Cant attach zipped file

    With the guidence of Matt Broughton, my project is screeds ahead of where it was yesterday, but!, as thier always is, ive got one last snag,
    File zips up great, but I cant figure how to select it to attach to my mail.
    Can select the origional file but all combinations ive tried result in the zipped file not attaching to the out going mail. Ive left the script.
    Any help appreciated.
    --ZIP ME UP--
    on clicked theObject
    if name of theObject is "zip" then
    set fileChoice to choose file without invisibles
    set fileChoice2 to quoted form of POSIX path of ¬
    fileChoice as string
    set zipFile to (fileChoice & ".zip") as string
    set zipFile to quoted form of POSIX path of ¬
    zipFile as string
    do shell script ¬
    "/usr/bin/ditto -c -k -rsrc " & fileChoice2 & " " & zipFile
    end if
    --ATTACH ZIPPED FILE TO MAIL--
    set theAttachments to (fileChoice)
    tell application "Mail"
    activate
    set newMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {content:return & "Attachment: " & return}
    tell newMessage
    set visible to true
    tell content
    if ((count of item of theAttachments) > 0) then
    repeat with theAttachment in theAttachments
    make new attachment with properties {file name:((theAttachment as text) as alias)} at after the last paragraph
    end repeat
    end if
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end clicked
    Budgie

    Budgie,
    I missed the curly brackets.
    It should be: set theAttachments to {(fileChoice & ".zip") as string}
    repeat with theAttachment in theAttachments
    make new attachment with properties {file name:((theAttachment as text) as >alias)} at after the last paragraph
    The reason for that is theAttachments need to be a list, without the curly bracets theAttachments is a string.
    repeat with theAttachment in theAttachments
    Therefore, theAttachment (in theAttachments) is/are letters in theAttachments. The file you select started with M.

    Application Loader, unless there's another one I'm not familiar with, is part of the iOS SDK. That have usurped the .zip, or you may have removed that application but your Mac is still holding onto the mapping of Zip files to that application. Select a .zip file in Finder, Get Info, and go to the Open with section. Select Archive Utility and click Change All. That should fix the problem.

  • Rename the zip file and send it using the Receiver Mail Adapter

    Hi,
    We have a custom module that will create multiple attachments. The result is then passed to the PayloadZipBean, which zips as per required.
    When we output this to a file adapter, we provide the file name as say "zippedfile.zip" the result is as expected.
    For example, if the custom module created 3 attachments with the names as file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt, the zip file zippedfile.zip, will contain 3 files as file1.txt, file2.txt and file3.txt.
    The issue that we are facing is when we use the mail adapter, the zip file is getting renamed to file1.txt.zip i.e to say that it takes the name of the main payload from the custom module (file1.txt)
    TextPayload txtpayload = message.getDocument();
    txtpayload.setContentType("text/plain");
    txtpayload.setName("file1.txt");
    moduleData.setPrincipalData(message);
    We tried using the MessageTransformbean but it doesn't seem to change the name of the file.
    Not sure where we are going wrong. Is it that the output of the payloadzipbean cannot be used and altered by MessageTransformbean?
    Is there any alternative as to rename the name of zipfiles and use it in the mail adapter?
    Appreciate any help on this regard.
    Regards,
    Shabz

    Solved.
    use Transform.ContentDisposition - attachment;filename="youfilename"
    Do read the mail adapter FAQ.
    The parameter can vary for different mail client.

  • How do I read a zipped file I have received in my mail?

    Hi
    I have received a zipped word file in the mail but cannot open it. Can I fix this?
    J

    You need an app that's capable of reading zipped files to open the attachment in and then unzip it e.g. GoodReader (not sure whether it deals with password protected zip files)

  • E Mailed Zip Files showing up as Password Protected

    I export photos to a folder, create zip file, and then e mail them as a regular part of my business. Sometimes these show up to the recipient as a "Password Protected" file. Any idea why???

    None, but I reckon that's either Mail or an OS X issue for your version of the Operating System. So I would post on one of those forums.
