Zip programes
Hi, i've reacently downloaded a file witch is ziped and my mac just won't unzip it, i've tried win zip, keka and other programs to get them to open but the, they just say "error" and failed, what am i doing wrong?
try zipeg works like a charm for me

I have recently been purchasing Books in Digital formats (which come compressed) and I am not able to un-Zip them.

The last Zip program I downloaded to my system was Zipeg and it LITTERED my system (no joke, I had to go to the Genius Bar to have everything removed).Mac OS X actually has a built-in ZIP tool that can both unzip files and zip files. However older versions of OS X do not cope well with password protected zip files and it maybe some of your zip files also use newer options your old operating systems correspondingly old zip tool does not support.
I would therefore echo the suggestion of Illaass and recommend you get the free Stuffit Expander tool.
For what its worth you now can actually buy a version of WinZip for the Mac, see http://www.winzip.com/mac/en/index.html I have not used it as I find the built-in zip tool in newer OS X versions along with Stuffit Expander sufficient. I have also written an Automator workflow which allows me to create password protected zip files. -

It's built-in to OS X. It's called Archive Utility and can be found in the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder.

Hi,
I have an older 17" Macbook Pro. I have OS X 10.6.8. I have been trying to download a zip program to unzip a file. I have tried numerous ones (Winzip, Maczip, Izip, Unzip60, The Unarchiver, Stuffit Expander) and they state that they are compatible with 10.6, however when I try to open them an error message states "you cannot open this application as it is not supported on this type of mac". What does this mean and does anyone know how to fix this?

Windows Zip program denies me access to zip files
When I try to zip a folder, it gets almost done, then come saying "unable to complete action, access denied"
I am the only user on my computer, so I must have administrative rights. Can anyone help me out with this?

There is a possibility that the present user account profile has corrupted .We can create a new administrator account and login with it to have a check .

Hi I want to download a zipped program, do I use the unarchiver or save the file?
How do I use the unarchiver or saved file, so I can use the program like any other with all files together as one program with an icon? I will be wanting to upload RAW photos to this program.

No, I mean the folder will automatically appear when the file is unzipped (as you've found)
I opened the box and it has the app. in it. Then what.
Then either run the installer by double-clicking on the app., or if it's a simple app, just drag the App icon from the folder to the Applications folder.
Also I have photoshop CS3 Version 10.01 installed but the Camera RAW plug in is not recognized.
CS3 can be pretty flaky with Snow Leopard, but if it was working OK otherwise I'd say that the plug-in is probably for a later version of PS. -
Archiving/zipping to different folder

Normally the Finder Archive function (accessible e.g. from contextual menu in Finder) archives to a .zip archive in the same folder as the original object being archived.
The Finder Archive function use BOMArchiveHelper, which is in:
/System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/BOMArchiveHelpe r
So the same archiving can be achieved in an AppleScript by the following statement:
do shell script "/System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/BOMArchiveHel per" "theUnixname"
where theUnixname is the Unix name of the file or folder being zipped. This works.
My question is the following: Is there any option to BOMArchiveHelper that permits the resulting file to be in a different folder than the original file or folder? This would permit archiving directly to another disk, e.g. an external hard disk, without first copying the uncompressed files or without using disk utility to make a compressed disk image.
(The reason I would like to use the zip files is that they are more universal than the compressed disk images. And I want to use BOMArchiveHelper rather than another ZIP program such as ZipIT because the Macintosh structure with resource forks is preserved by BOMArchiveHelper in a way that still permits the ZIP archive to be opened on e.g. a Windows or Linux machine, which is not the case for the MacBinary implementation in ZipIt).

After downloading zip file, could not extract files on windows XP by using any tool or built-in extractor i.e. compressed(zipped)folders (error: compressed folder invalid or corrupted).
But this works on win2k or win98
How can i work with it or can anyone tell me a solution to handle such a problem.

[email protected]This could be a problem with the built-in ZIP program in Win XP - it's possible that the ZIP you are downloading (uploading?) is simply incompatible with the XP program. In Win 98 & 2000, you would have to use your own ZIP program, e.g. Winzip, and that can handle more formats that the XP program.
Try installing the same ZIP program that you have on w98/2k on your XP machine, and see if you can open the uploaded file using it. -
Windows Explorer misreads large-file .zip archives
I just spent about 90 minutes trying to report this problem through
the normal support channels with no useful result, so, in desperation,
I'm trying here, in the hope that someone can direct this report to some
useful place.
There appears to be a bug in the .zip archive reader used by Windows
Explorer in Windows 7 (and up, most likely).
An Info-ZIP Zip user recently reported a problem with an archive
created using our Zip program. The archive was valid, but it contained
a file which was larger than 4GiB. The complaint was that Windows
Explorer displayed (and, apparently believed) an absurdly large size
value for this large-file archive member. We have since reproduced the
problem.
The original .zip archive format includes uncompressed and compressed
sizes for archive members (files), and these sizes were stored in 32-bit
fields. This caused problems for files which are larger than 4GiB (or,
on some system types, where signed size values were used, 2GiB). The
solution to this fundamental limitation was to extend the .zip archive
format to allow storage of 64-bit member sizes, when necessary. (PKWARE
identifies this format extension as "Zip64".)
The .zip archive format includes a mechanism, the "Extra Field", for
storing various kinds of metadata which had no place in the normal
archive file headers. Examples include OS-specific file-attribute data,
such as Finder info and extended attributes for Apple Macintosh; record
format, record size, and record type data for VMS/OpenVMS; universal
file times and/or UID/GID for UNIX(-like) systems; and so on. The Extra
Field is where the 64-bit member sizes are stored, when the fixed 32-bit
size fields are too small.
An Extra Field has a structure which allows multiple types of extra
data to be included. It comprises one or more "Extra Blocks", each of
which has the following structure:

The problem with the .zip archive reader used by Windows Explorer is
that it appears to expect the Extra Block which includes the 64-bit
member sizes (type code = 0x0001) to be the first (or only) Extra Block
in the Extra Field. If some other Extra Block appears at the start of
the Extra Field, then its (non-size) data are being incorrectly
interpreted as the 64-bit sizes, while the actual 64-bit size data,
further along in the Extra Field, are ignored.
Perhaps the .zip archive _writer_ used by Windows Explorer always
places the Extra Block with the 64-bit sizes in this special location,
but the .zip specification does not demand any particular order or
placement of Extra Blocks in the Extra Field, and other programs
(Info-ZIP Zip, for example) should not be expected to abide by this
artificial restriction. For details, see section "4.5 Extensible data
fields" in the PKWARE APPNOTE:

A .zip archive reader is expected to consider the Extra Block type
codes, and interpret accordingly the data which follow. In particular,
it's not sufficient to trust that any particular Extra Block will be the
first one in the Extra Field. It's generally safe to ignore any Extra
Block whose type code is not recognized, but it's crucial to scan the
Extra Field, identify each Extra Block, and handle it according to its
type.

illustrate the problem:

Faced with these unrealistic sizes, Windows Explorer refuses to
extract the member file, for lack of (petabytes of) free disk space.
The archive test_4g.zip has the following Extra Blocks: universal
time (type = 0x5455) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001). test_4g_V.zip
has: PWWARE VMS (type = 0x000c) and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001).
test_4g_W.zip has: NT security descriptor (type = 0x4453), universal
time (type = 0x5455), and 64-bit sizes (type = 0x0001). Obviously,
Info-ZIP UnZip has no trouble correctly finding the 64-bit size info in
these archives, but Windows Explorer is clearly confused. (Note that
"1,464,940,363,777 KB" translates to 0x0005545500000400 (bytes), and
"0x00055455" looks exactly like the size, "0x0005" and the type code
"0x5455" for a "UT" universal time Extra Block, which was present in
that archive. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the wrong
data in the Extra Field are being interpreted as the 64-bit size data.)
Without being able to see the source code involved here, it's hard to
know exactly what it's doing wrong, but it does appear that the .zip
reader used by Windows Explorer is using a very (too) simple-minded
method to extract 64-bit size data from the Extra Field, causing it to
get bad data from a properly formed archive.
I suspect that the engineer involved will have little trouble finding
and fixing the code which parses an Extra Field to extract the 64-bit
sizes correctly, but if anyone has any questions, we'd be happy to help.

You seem to misunderstand the situation. The facts are these:
1. For your convenience, I've provided three test archives, each of
which includes a file larger than 4GiB. These archives are valid.
2. Info-ZIP UnZip (version 6.00 or newer) can process these archives
correctly. This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
valid.
3. Programs from other vendors can process these archives correctly.
I've supplied a screenshot showing one of them (7-Zip) doing so, as you
requested. This is consistent with the fact that these archives are
valid.
4. Windows Explorer (on Windows 7) cannot process these archives
correctly, apparently because it misreads the (Zip64) file size data.
I've supplied a screenshot of Windows Explorer showing the bad file size
it gets, and the failure that occurs when one tries to use it to extract
the file from one of these archives, as you requested. This is
consistent with the fact that there's a bug in the .zip reader used by
Windows Explorer.
Yes, "other zip application runs correctly." Info-ZIP UnZip runs
correctly. Only Windows Explorer does _not_ run correctly. -
i have recieved a number of password protected zip files which the unzip utility in osx leopard will not open. (i have the correct password).
i've downloaded a couple of smallish utilities from the download area but they don't seem to be able to accept a password either.
would someone be kind enough to point me towards a download (hopefully on the apple site) which can accept a password to open a zip file.

Hello,
Does any one have any idea about creating/extracting password protected zip files in AIR. I am aware of FZip but it does not has the feature to password protect.

Zip file created on OS X fails to open in Windows
I have created a 10 GB zip file (I suppose that it is a zip 64 file) as a backup of my Mac. I have moved it into a Windows computer, however, whatever program I use, it fails to open. The closest I got was using a 3rd party zip program, which succeeded in reading the directories, but not the individual files. Is there a program that I can use, or is this only compressible on a Mac (on a Mac, I have succeeded in uncompressing the file)?
There are of course several different companies that make and furnish there product on the market many are free while others you have to pay for. In all the years I have been playing with computers I have found this one to be one of the best on the market.

Trouble with Documentation ZIP File for Fusion Middleware 11g (11.1.1.6)
Hello,
I downloaded E23943_01.zip, which is the 2.5 GB documentation set for Fusion Middleware 11g (11.1.1.6), WebLogic 10.3.6. WinZip will not open the ZIP file due to this error: too many entries in central directory according to end of central directory info. My other ZIP programs report essentially the same error as WinZip.
When I first encountered the error, I assumed my download did not complete correctly; but I downloaded it three times, with the same error. All three downloads had the same file sizes, and I even binary-compared two of them, which were identical.
I am suspicious that the source E23943_01.zip file on Oracle's site is corrupt. Can anyone corroborate or refute my suspicions?

Need instructions on how to zip and unzip roboehelp 6 files.
When I zip, try to send file attachment, then try to unzip all I

Depending on the zip program you use, the zip folder may look
almost exactly the same as a regular folder. So perhaps you are
opening the xpj that is in the zip file, rather than the extracted
one?
Perhaps try the following:
* put the zip file in c:\temp
* extract to c:\mytestproject (or something else completely
different from the location of the zip file)
* make sure you navigate to c:\mytestproject to open the xpj.
