ZLM 7.3 and ZCM 10.2

Can these two products be installed onto the same machine? I am working with XEN Virtual machines and I would like to be able to install the ZCM and the ZLM onto the same machines and I would like to know if anyone has tried this, or knows if it can work? Thank you,

When I check the minimum requirements for ZCM:
Novell Doc: ZENworks 10 Configuration Management Installation Guide - Minimum Requirements
Novell recommends NOT to have a ediretcory on the server where you want to install ZCM. ZLM has a edirectory in the background and therefor it would conflict with ZCM. Therefor I would say you cannot install ZCM on the same server as you have ZLM.
If I get other information from my Novell contact, I will post it.

Thank you for getting back with me, and thank you for the information. I did not know that ZLM 7.x has(d) a version of eDirectory running on it. Does it have to have all the eDirectory services(i.e. OES 2 installed), does it go into the main production tree, or is it a standalone product? Or is that something that is installed when you install the ZLM 7.x product?

  • Relation between ZLM 7.x and ZCM 10??

    Hi all,
first of all sorry for this more general question. I was just wondering how the two Novell products ZCM 10 and ZLM 7.x work together. ZCM is covering the Windows world, am I getting this right? So you also have a ZCC for ZCM... My question is, is it intended to install both solutions on one server? Or does Novell say keep the two products seperated?
Having a first look at the ZCM docs I got the impression that both products are using their own ZCC, so there is no central management platform, right?
    Regards
    --Daniel

To start, I'm not a ZLM expert more of a ZCM Expert.
So I will not be able to answer too much in the way of ZLM.
ZLM and ZCM are two different products.
Novell supports ZLM and ZCM on the same server since ZLM is needed to
manage the server. However, I would only recommend installing the
management portion of ZLM to allow the server to be managed which is
acting as a ZCM server since ZCM is a server intense product.
Eventually ZLM will be merged into ZCM.
There may be some discussion of that future at Brainshare, I'm not sure.

  • Passive login and ZCM

Hi all: I would like enable passive mode login in the Novell Client running on Windows 7. We are running ZCM 11.2.4. However, when I do this, my ZCM client will not automatically login. What I need is to use the Microsoft method (domain) and then have both the Novell Client and ZCM get the username and password and passively log in themselves.
    Is this possible? How?
    Thanks, Chris.

You may need to Enable PassiveMode
Or Maybe tell it to not Honor WS Only
I have not really played with this, but I'm fairly sure it should work.
    http://www.novell.com/documentation/....html#bookinfo
Note: It is possible to Logon to the Domain, Even when the Novell Client
Logon Appears, not quite sure why you are trying to do it the other way.

  • Local GP and ZCM delivered GP Interaction

Using our current imaging process we include a number of Group Policies on the base image. However, we continue to have instances where some Group Policies do not get applied. In some cases the GP in question is configured in both the local GP and the ZCM delivered GP. This wreaks havoc on some of our web based apps that need specific policies. I did some more looking and found this in the documentation:
If you apply Local Group policies on a managed device that has ZENworks Group policies
already applied, some of the settings might not work correctly.
Does this mean that we shouldn't configure local GPO at all and just rely totally on ZCM? This is a concern because it seems as if when there is ANY problem enforcing the ZCM delivered GP it will roll the device back to the policy in the Original Cache that it creates after the agent is installed. If we don't have any local GPs configured won't this cause the device to go back to an unconfigured state?

It's best to use one or the other.

  • Windows 7 Automated Imaging and ZCM Registration

After banging my head off my desk for the past week or so, I think I've finally managed to crack automated ZCM imaging of Windows 7 including (based on my previous XP imaging work) :
    - Automated Computer renaming based on BIOS setting (HP Machines) (powershell script)
    - Automated Join Domain (powershell script)
    - A scripted "scan for new hardware" to cover using the same base image on multiple machines
    - ZCM agent delivered as a ZCM add-on image and installed by one of the powershell scripts above
Before I post it up as a Cool Solution, it would be helpful if a couple of people would be willing to test out the steps for me to see if I've missed anything?
If anyone is interested, please PM me on here with their mail address, and I'll send over the instructions and the relevant scripts.

  • ZLM Event Log and System Event Log

I just created my base ZLM server using version 7.3 and updated a test SLES 10 server to use the 7.3 agent. The SLES server was running sp1 and running the 64-bit OS. I was able to successfully upgrade the server to sp2 but I noticed I don't get any entries in the event or system event log areas. This is under the Devices > Servers > Server name I could tell if the bundles installed successfully or the device was refreshed. I don't get anything now. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to fix this?

  • Windows 7 Auto Imaging and ZCM Registration

I have a few questions but I will only start with one.
While trying to follow the instructions for building the base image, after installing the Windows Driver kit, copying the DPINST.exe file, Installing the Windows AIK program, and then installing a copy of the Windows 7 to the pc, when launching the System Image manager to create the new answer file, when I go to select the windows image, Win 7 "ENTERPRISE" is not available for me to choose from. the only options are the other four editions. Why is that or what am I doing wrong?

You are not using windows 7 enterprise media, which you need an agreement with microsoft to obtain.

  • ZCM PXE and ZEN 7 PXE

Ok I am having a heck of a time trying to get PXE boot work on our zcm machine.
I have set up the server referral and added the old zen 7 server ip in there.
unloaded the novell-proxydhcp service on the old server and started it on the zcm server
i copied the files to the /srv/tftp folder.
dhcp not running on either machine
cisco routers have ip helper set
cisco routers have ip forward-protocol udp 67 and ip forward-protocol udp 68 set.
reboot the machine and it doesn't get a ip address
    PXE-E53: No boot filename received
    PCE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
i check the logs and i don't even see any dhcp requests
    any one with some suggestions?

I know the ip helper is set for both servers i am not sure about ip forward-protocol I will have the network ppl check when they get in.
I have noticed if i start the proxydhcp service on the old server it works ..

  • SLES OES Patching using ZCM - Best Practice?

Have recently updated an underused ZLM 7.3 to ZCM 11 and have started to utilise it to perform patching of SLES 10 SP3 and OES 2.
At present I have a Novell subscription that downloads from novell NU as Patches with
Create Category based Bundle Groups on.
I hadn't at this point got my head around the sandbox but now want to utilise this as I don't want to implement it willy nilly and have patches deployed and installed without testing first.
So first question is whether there is a best practice document for using ZCM 11 for patching SLES 10 and Sles/oes boxes that describes how best to use the sandbox.
Next question is whether sandbox applies to the patches or only monolithic bundles
At the end of the day it would be great to have a best practice document on how to utilise ZCM with change control over keeping SLES10/OES boxes patched up to date

    Hello,
updates via ZCM is also a problem for me.
At least i could give a little response from testing.
As stated in the oes2 documentation patches had to be used for updates. At that point i had the problem that the subscription only created a bundle group which included the patches.
The monolithic bundle seems to be an ordinary update (zcm docu states rpm -U ...) and so should not be used for oes2 servers.
I found out that its ok to rename the patch bundle group created by the subscription to fix the patchlist. I use bundle names which include the date to keep updates from sles and oes in sync.
So you should be able to do updates with these bundlegroups without problem but it is not very nice because each patch bundle had its on log report and entry in the bundle list.
So to keep a global view is not very easy.
The other problem is that there is no official documentation neither on the oes2 or the zcm site how to correct update/patch a sles or oes system with zcm (without patchlink).
Hope this will be included soon as all linux satellite server will have the problem that this is the only way to get updates without direkt connection to the internet - at least as far as i can see.

  • Trying to rebuild ZCM 10.3.1 server after crash

    Hi all,
I'm currently trying to help a customer rebuild a ZCM 10.3.1 server (single primary server) used for Asset Management only, after a complete crash.
The situation is, that we have now re-installed both the OS and ZCM 10.3.1 server with same names, IP etc. We have also restored the SQL database and are able to login to ZCC and see all data.
But - the server is permanently running at 100% CPU Utilization, with the ZEN-loader and ZEN-Server as the primary culprit.
Looking in the loader-messages logfile, we found that it is being flooded with thousands and thousands og line with the same message:
    [MESSAGELOGGER.Debug] [9/23/11 1:08:52 PM] [] [Loader.InventoryStorerAMModule] [] [InventoryStorerModule: Exception: com.novell.zenworks.datamodel.exceptions.ObjectNot FoundException: 13e17b91e0b14c7074846efd50f2d034] [] []
And we have now realized that this is due to the fact, that our new install of ZCM 10.3.1 and Agent, naturally does not have the same GUID as the original server..
So - the question is then: how do we change the GUID on the new installed ZCM server, so that it will hook up to the original server/device in the database, and just move on as nothing has happened? I believe I have seen a ZMAN command at some point, doing this exact thing?
    Additional information about the installation:
    Server running on VMWare platform
    Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (on same server)
ZCM server 10.3.1 used for Asset Management only (250 devices)

  • Missing Software and version #

Okay, how would you all handle this:
In ZEN 7, we had JUST MSI And add/remove programs setup for software inventory. It actually did pretty good (example, it found a bunch of ESRI ArcGIS stuff).
It would show ALL the SDK (ie, there's an SDK for C++, one for VB, etc.)
It would also show the complete version and build number (ie: 9.2.134.21)
Now we are using ZAM 7.5 (in addition to ZEN, but eventually will cutover to ZCM)
Anyway, ZAM 7.5 seems even more limited in its software inventory.
It doesn't find any of the SDK's (I've had to submit multiple fingerprint wizards in the past for missing software).
It also doesn't report build numbers, just versions like 9.2
Sooo, what's the best way to handle this?
The missing stuff I'm either going to have to add more fingerprints (very time consuming as I have to go visit the PC's with the software to run the utility) or add local product (in which case I've gotta get the people to send me the .exe and whatnot). Either way, stinks, IMO.
And how should I handle the missing version information? It's in the windows registry at the least, but I'm not sure about the actual VBR info in the file. Do I submit an SR, enhancement request, run the wizard?
Version info is very important for us because it signifies the product patch levels (ie, it doesn't say like: Hi I'm ArcView 9.2 SP3, but rather, I'm 9.2.somethingsomethingsomethng)

Recognition in ZAM - and ZCM - has been, over time, focused more towards business applications than development applications. In that environment, recognition out to the build number is viewed as less relevant; accordingly, most fingerprints tend to report at the "N.N" or "N.N.N" level. The recognition technology is quite capable of reporting out to "N.N.N.N" and indeed that level of granularity is utilized when requested and appropriate. (We pickup the build from the VRB.) Further, when specified, "promotion" fingerprints will automatically discover versions with new build numbers in them and create new products on-the-fly. This type of fingerprint must, however, be engineered by Novell.
Generally, the recognition team has placed less emphasis on SDKs. We tend to make decisions towards products that will have impact on the majority of customers. But, as you've mentioned, we respond to requests for signatures.
From the software local products perspective, if you are gathering "software file" (the ZAM name) or "file scan" (ZCM) data, you shouldn't need to have files sent to you to create a local product. In ZAM 7.5 you can create a local product from the Software Files report in the web console fairly efficiently. It works even better in the ZENworks Control Center of ZCM 10. On a project earlier this year, at a customer site where there is a lot of internal application development and a strong commitment to populating the VRB on every update, we created over 150 local products - with different product names and versions - in about a minute.

  • Installing ZLM-Agent 7.3 IR1 on SLED11

    Hi
I just tried an install of the ZLM-Agent 7.3 IR1 on SLED11 and on executing ./zlm-install it continues with the installation and terminates with the error:
    socket.error: [Errno 111] Connection refused
I tried running zlm-install again and it's hanging on:
Checking for the registered ZENworks service...
Inside /var/opt/novell/log/zenworks/zlm-install.log it is currently saying:
    Jan 27 17:28:58 Executing command: /etc/init.d/novell-zmd stop
    Any ideas?
    Ricardo

    Ricardo,
check if there is still a zmd process active:
    # ps -ef | grep zmd
If there is one, kill it.
Then delete the zmd.db file from /var/lib/zmd and try the installation once again.

  • ZLM Agent IR3 Registration During Installation Fails

    Greetings,
We've recently started to look into using Novell's ZENworks Linux
Management product, but have run into a slight snag that has prevented
us from being able to continue evaluating the product. We had no issues
with the ZLM install, but have been unable to get past the initial
installation of the ZLM Agent on the servers we want to manage. We are
using the latest Interim Release 3 version in both cases.
    Servers involved:
    * ZLM installed via ZLM73_Server_with_IR3.iso on a Red Hat Enterprise
    Linux 5.5 64bit server.
    * ZLM Agent install attempt via ZLM73_Agent_with_IR3.iso on a SUSE Linux
    Enterprise Server 10 SP3 64bit server.
    * ZLM Agent install attempt via ZLM73_Agent_with_IR3.iso on a Red Hat
    Enterprise Linux 5.5 64bit server.
In either of the two ZLM Agent installation situations, we receive the
same errors during the installation, though we also tried to use a
registration key on the second attempt with the RHEL server.
Additionally, we are currently using the 90-day evaluation license with
the ZLM server, and it has not expired yet. The errors produced during
the install of the agent, as seen in the /var/log/zmd-messages.log, have
been attached to this reply. The most obvious issue, unless we're
mistaken, seems to be the following:
11 Aug 2010 00:07:53 INFO ZenService Registration failed:
System.InvalidOperationException: Not supported Content-Type in the
    response: 'text/html;charset=utf-8' Response error message:
Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
    QC

Thank you for the speedy response. We actually managed to correct this
with a re-install of zlm using the standard ports, as we suspected the
setup of zlm to run on an alternate port, 8443, may have had something
to do with our issue (when registering the zlm agent, we were able to
successfully use $host:8443, with the exception of xml content-type error
during the registration portion of the zlm agent install of course).
Sorry, some of this information was left out of our previous reply, as
the attachment that was mentioned has this information but was left out,
and we had issues replying to our original post, due to post filter
errors from the nntp server, when trying to include it.

    * Well, there didn't seem to be any connectivity issues going over the
zlm agent log, and we could connect to the zlm server just fine whether
via fully qualified domain name or IP. Our initial attempts, which
didn't account for the alternate 8443 port the zlm server was setup up
on would log obvious connections errors which disappeared when we
    specified the port.

    * We were able to access the zlm server just fine, the (web)
administration interface as well. The "registration" issues we were
having seemed to be the registration done in the course of the zlm agent
install, after mounting the zlm agent iso, cd'ing to the mounted
    directory, and running: ./zlm-install -a

    * Well, time is off by no more than a few minutes between the servers
currently, and will be corrected via ntpd, but in this case, we did
manage to get this working despite this.

I am planning on upgrading my Horizon View installation to 6.0.x. I'm currently running View 5.0 with DSFW 11.2, Window 7SP1-64 and ZCM 11.2a
Has anyone tried to use DSFW 11.2 with VMware View 6 or higher? Have you had any issues getting them configured together? If so, what did you do to resolve them?
As additional information, I will also be upgrading to Win 8.1 and using ZCM 11.3a

  • AD + NW Client + ZCM - Help

Hi all: I just found out that the use of DLUs with Active Directory is a no-no. So I went and turned of my DLU policy for a test user group and now I can't seem to login properly, and I am completely lost.
    Here is what I have:
    Workstations running Windows 7 64-bit, Novell Client 2 SP3 and ZCM 11.2.4
    OES servers run OES11 SP1
Active Directory runs on Windows server 2008
Passwords get sync'ed via Identity Manager eDir -> AD
I need to log into eDirectory, ZCM, AND AD, but with only one log in screen (i.e. the user only enters their username and password once). I have context-less login enabled so my users do not have to mess with context settings. Username and passwords are sync'ed one way, from eDir to AD, via IDM.
I am hoping there are some good how to's on this, but the info I have found so far has not helped out. I am able to get the Novell and AD login working together, but ZCM fails to log in.
    All help greatly appreciated, Chris.

Craig: Thanks for the reply. After giving up last night I came in with fresh eyes and did discover the domain was not being set (Novell client - advanced - windows tab). When I set that I was able to log in to both the domain and eDir and ZCM.
With that said I still have several issues related to the loss of DLU. The biggest problem is how to set the user rights at the workstation. With DLU I set my admin accounts to be in the local Administrator group, but without DLU I cannot do not have local admin rights. I checked the local accounts (control userpasswords2) and my username is in the Administrators group.
The second issue is the loss of roaming profiles. I have a Roaming profile policy, and it successfully applies, but my profile is not being uploaded at logout.
Any suggestions on how to fix these issues. Thanks again, Chris.

Did you make sure your PCs are joined to the domain?
If you see the normal "Client 2" logon screen, check the advanced tab
for the local Windows logon and make sure it is pointing to the domain
    and not the local machine.
