Zones hung

Hiya Chaps,
I've a T5120 with 4 shared IP zones running for a few months without issue, however the other night all four non-globals hung, couldn't connect to them via zlogin, or ssh directly to them. zoneadm list form the global showed all four as running, but attempting to reboot them hung zoneadm.
I could connect to the global zone without a problem via the same interface via ssh, sar shows the box pretty much idle on everything, no resource contention thats obvious. Couldn't disable the zones service from the global zone, in the end I had to reboot the thing via a power off from the lom.
There are no errors in any of the OS logs in the global or non-global zones when it came back up, the only error seen was from an application running in one of the zones that the applications outbound udp buffer was full, which could well have been down to a network fault. I can't see how this would lock up the other three zones though even if the app managed to pin the one zone it was running in (contrary to the io/cpu/mem stats from the global at the time which don't suggest this).
Any ideas here, I've had a good hunt about but can't find anything relevant, am starting to get worried as when the application traffic failed from this box to it's partner in another datacentre, the same thing happened there!
Both are : Solaris 10 5/08 s10s_u5wos_10 SPARC, 5.10 Generic_138888-03 sun4v
There's no clever stuff in the zone configs, we're running FSS wbut with no resource limits set (yet), as I mentioned shared IP with a single filesystem lofs'd from the global.
Any pointers on where to start looking would be appreciated, don't really want this to happen again!
Cheers,
Matt

  • How to know global zone in case non global zone is hung

    ....I have nongloabazone1,nongloabazone1,nongloabazone2,nongloabazone3...
    i am working on nongloabazone1 ..
suppose i am giving remote support ...
if my nongloabazone1 is hung ..i need to know the global zone on which this nongloabazone1 is installed and reboot from there ...if my nongloabazone1 is hung i cannot apply #arp -a and check it out by trial and error method and know the global zone....
in this case how can i reboot the nongloabazone1 .....i have the same question in case of Ldoms also..............
    Thanks in Advance.......

    Hi.
It's not clear what means "non global zone is hung".
In case it realy hangs you can't do anythins in this zone.
    1) In case you have access to global zone. You can get list all zones running on this host:
    zoneadm list -cv
For reboot local zone from global zone just need: zoneadm -z <zone_name> reboot
    2) Zones not support live migration. So after zone started it can not change global zone.
Create script that put global zone name in file. When need - just read content of this file.
This file can be created from global zone when start (or create/move) local zone.
In case zone migration is not quickly operation, just create file (or database) for list what zone started on which host.
For LDOM it look wery same.
    Regards.

  • Non-global zone in "shutting_down" state.. Hung in this state

Hi.. My server is running in Sol10. It has got two non-global zones hosted in it in which the database is running.
There was some complain from the database team that they were not able to login to the server. When I checked, it the status of the local zones were fine. But when tried to "# zlogin" to them, it got hung. So i tried to " # zlogin -S <zone_name>" and i was able to login in the failsafe mode but not able to execute any command in it. Any command from "uptime", "zfs list", gets hung and i had to forcefully logout.
So I tried to halt the non-global zones first and then boot it. But here, it got stuck in "shutting_down" state.
When tried to kill the processes of the non-global zones using "kill -9", it failed to kill the processes.
so I rebooted the global zone which fixed the issue. But then, 10 days later, the same issue came up.
I followed the same steps to fix the issue but i'm afraid this issue might come up again since i think rebooting the global zone server is a temporary fix.
I logged a call with Oracle Support for this, but the server looks fine from the explorer output that was provided.
Has anyone faced this same problem? What can i do to fix this issue permanantly?

If you encounter the issue again in future, please get a system crash dump by panicing the global zone. This will allow us (support) to review the crash dump and understand why the zone failed to shut down. It will have been waiting on a resource and without the dump there's simply no way to know what or why.
IIRC we recently (with the past month) did a putback of a bug (which I can't find the ID of right now) whereby if a zone doesn't hang on the way down we'll fork a new instance of the zone and leave the old refs in their hung state. So it's worth ensuring that you're running the latest Patchset.

  • Oops, bcache hung up after update to linux-3.11.4

My ext4 root partion mounted on a bcache device
and the /dev/bcache0 register by a bakup partion on fakeraid /dev/mapper/isw_dfabciibaj_ird1p2
The last time update to linux-3.11.4, it hung up on systemd job starting.
So I enter emergency prompt with kernel option "ro", then try mount -o remount,rw /
but the bcache module crash in seconds

Oh well, for you working wireless is probably more important than experimentation. I'll need to find myself a machine with new-ish broadcom wireless to play with . I only briefly had one a few months ago.
    I guess I am still using b43 firmware (aur/b43-firmware).
It goes like this: Broadcom cards use special communication busses. In your case bcma; the other is ssb, it's used by older Broadcom cards. The kernel has bcma and ssb drivers to support these busses and it has the b43 driver for the wireless chips. So bcma+b43 (or ssb+b43) gives you working wireless. b43 is a reverse engineering effort, because in the past Broadcom was very non-opensource. But then Broadcom released their own opensource driver - brcmsmac. So now there's two drivers in the kernel supporting the same cards: bcma+b43 and brcmsmac. You have to blacklist either one or the other.
Thank you for clearing things up... wiki material?
I am marking this as solved.

my management server (10g) is on windows 2000 and windows is running on time zone GMT+5
Iinstalled agent 10g on Red Hat Linux Advance Server 4 and during instalation it sucessfully detects the OMS running on windows. After installation, it doesnt start the agent.
I tried manually starting agent butfailed and in log file i found the following error

Are the other icons in the upper right of the dock working okay? It's possible the menu bar (more accurately, SystemUIServer) has crashed or has hung. You could try killing it in Activity Monitor and it should re-launch and your dock should update.

  • Solaris server hung when executes prstat or ps command

    Hi all,
When we are executing prstat or pr command, the global zone and non global zone images are hungs.
kindly give some suggesstions to resolve

I've noticed huge latency while running prstat, ps type commands on certain systems running java-based applications.
This could be due to lock mgmt issues:

I would recommend you open a case with sun to find out more.

Logs are accessed via journalctl or, for the packages you upgraded, /var/log/pacman.
    It's my actual system.
The actual system hung up ... no any response.
and I guess, it is because the virtualbox, because it is ok when there is no virtual machine running ...
here is the log of last time, which is generated by this command "journalctl --since=today | tac | sed -n '/-- Reboot --/{n;:r;/-- Reboot --/q;p;n;b r}' | tac"

  • Zone install failing on sys-unconfig

    Hi,
I am building 6 virtualised servers from flash archives of existing machines for a dev environment.
I am running solaris 10 on the host machine and i am installing solaris 9 branded zones for the guests.
So far i have installed three of them successfully by following the documentation.
This one particular host gets up to *"Postprocess: Performing zone sys-unconfig"* and just sits there doing nothing.
I have checked things like disk space and have re created the flash archive three times.
    The command i am running is : zoneadm -z vm3-dev install -u -a /storage/flash/vm3_20110208.flar
I have used zlogin to access the guest OS and can see an apparently hung sys-unconfig. I have left the install running for 24hrs and eventually just killed the install.
I'm not sure where to go from here to troubleshoot this issue. It is puzzling to me that basically identical machines should install fine using the same steps.
what should i do to progress this install.
    Cheers,
    ram.

check ptree of zone install command and see if you can kill the child sys-unconfig command. post us ptree of zone install and also truss -fp on zone install process when it hungs.

  • Chown -R user hung on nfs4 mounted partition

    Hi,
Using Solaris 10 on sparc. NFS v4 as server with default configuration on
Global zone and nfs4 client on 2 zones.
    share -F nfs -o rw=server-t /nfs/shareddir
    ls -ald /nfs/shareddir
    drwxr-xr-x 2 104 staff 512 Jul 29 16:34 /nfs/shareddir and server-t is a zone .
    on server-t (nfs client)
    mount -F nfs <nfsserver>:/nfs/shareddir /usr/local/shareddir
    ls -ald /usr/local/shareddir
    drwxr-xr-x 2 user staff 512 Jul 29 16:34 /usr/local/shareddir
<user> is not created on nfs server so /nfs/shareddir is created such that
owned by UID 104 which is UID of user on client.
now problem is when a lot of directories were successfully created in
/usr/local/shareddir and following command is given on only 1 client, the
    process was hung..
    chown -R user /usr/local/shareddir/<somedir>
above command was hung for hours finally was killed. ( this directory
is actually shared between 2 NFS4 client on solaris 10 zones)
what could be reason and is there anything missing in the configuration
recommended for NFS4, on server and client /etc/default/nfs is untouched.
there are hugh number of directories and files of large size created on client side..where chown command was run(for same user which already owns that mounted partition)
    Please let me know,
    Thanks,

jonnybarnes wrote:So this is partition sdb2, I have partition sdb1 mounted as /var, which is also weird because my system doesn't seem slow or sluggish, but I don't really know how often /var is read or written to. If I get a new SATA cable and attach the drive to a different port, it won't become like /dev/sdc will it and thus make my system complain about having no /var folder?
It might, but that's why you should always use persistent block device naming. With udev the device nodes for your partitions might also change after a reboot so you really shouldn't rely on them.

  • Simple two node Cluster Install - Hung after reboot of first node

    Hello,
Over the past couple of days I have tried to install a simple two node cluster using two identical SunFire X4200s, firstly following the recipe in: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/howtoguides/twonodecluster.jsp
and when that failed referring to http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-0912 and http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2970.
I am trying to keep the install process as simple as possible, no switch, just back to back connections for the internal networking (node1 e1000g0 <--> node2 e1000g0, node1 e1000g1 <--> node2 e1000g1)
I ran the installer on both X4200s with default answers. This went through smoothly without problems.
I ran scinstall on node1, first time through, choosing "typical" as suggested in the how to guide. Everything goes OK (no errors) node2 reboots, but node1 just sits there waiting for node2, no errors, nothing....
I also tried rerunning scinstall choosing "Custom", and then selecting the no switch option. Same thing happened.
I must be doing something stupid, it's such a simple setup! Any ideas??
Here's the final screen from node1 (dcmds0) in both cases:

    Rob.

I have found out why the install hung - this needs to be added into the install guide(s) at once!! - It's VERY frustrating when an install guide is incomplete!
The solution is posted in the HA-Cluster OpenSolaris forums at:
    http://opensolaris.org/os/community/ha-clusters/ohac/Documentation/SCXdocs/relnotes/#bugs
In particular, my problem was that I selected to make my Solaris install secure (A good idea, I thought!). Unfortunately, this stops Sun Cluster from working. To fix the problem you need to perform the following steps on each secured node:
Problem Summary: During Solaris installation, the setting of a restricted network profile disables external access to network services that Sun Cluster functionality uses, ie: The RPC communication service, which is required for cluster communication
Workaround: Restore external access to RPC communication.
Perform the following commands to restore external access to RPC communication.
    # svccfg
    svc:> select network/rpc/bind
    svc:/network/rpc/bind> setprop config/local_only=false
    svc:/network/rpc/bind> quit
    # svcadm refresh network/rpc/bind:default
    # svcprop network/rpc/bind:default | grep local_only
Once I applied these commands, the install process continued ... AT LAST!!!
    Rob.

  • DNS: reverse zone comes back after remove and some follow up issues

    hello community,
after installation of OSL i had setup dns with a primary zone.
the automatically created reverse zone for my internal network is fine.
whenever i enter a new system the default for the ip address is 10.0.0.1 and the reverse zone is automatically setup for this ip address.
whenever i remove this reverse zone it come back automatically after saving the dns configuration.
with this come some follow up error.
server admin claim that there is no name server configured for this reverse zone.
when i configure it the configured name server entry vanished after clicking the save button.
when i try to configure settings i can not. i get the error message that the configuration can not be saved cause of the missing name server for the reverse zone i am not using ....
in the log file i can see that the file for reverse zone can not be found.
when i check the dns configuration in the shell i can see that the reverse zone file is not there.
    someone has an idea
    - whats the best way to fix this?
    - why is the gui still showing the reverse zone i am not using?
    - is the dns configuration also in the ldap db with wrong entries?
    regards
    christian

Clean out your zone definitions, and start over. Server Admin is unfortunately seemingly fussy around the authoritative server stuff and the order stuff gets entered, and it seems you can get into a sequence where it doesn't have what it needs. I had encountered couple of cases when I was in a similar state as you're in now, and I ended up clearing and deleting the primary zone and re-adding the zone and the hosts, being careful to add the authoritative server as the first step of adding a zone.

  • TS1363 I was upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7.  The iPhone hung.  It is no longer visible by iTunes on Win 7

While upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7, the iPhone hung.  I could not get iTunes to find it and Win 7 does not see it.
When I connect the iPhone to the USB, Win 7 issues the welcome sound, but that is it.  The same happens when I disconnect iPhone.
The Devise Manager has the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver correct without any problem.  I updated this driver called usbaapl64.
    The iPhone is still hung.
    I restarted the iPod service
I restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service
I tried to empty and delete the temp directory in C:\users\myname\AppData\Local\ but could not
The iTunes I am using is the latest version
I updated the Apple Mobile Device Driver as stated above correctly
The iPhone is still hung and is not recognized by Win 7 or iTunes, so I cannot restore the OS to the previous working version
What else can I do to restore the previous working OS on my iPhone 4

I was connecting the iPhone 4 to a USB 3.0 port.  I was told by Apple Express Support (at US$29.99) not to use USB 3.0 and to use USB 2.1 instead.
If you are connecting your iPhone to the computer using a USB 3.0 port, disconnect it immediately.  iPhones will lock up if you try to update while  using a connection through a USB 3.0 port.
Disconnect the iPhone from the computer
Go to Device Manager and find the connected USB port.  Click the mouse right button and update the driver
Shut the iPhone by pressing the sleep button and the home button concurrently for some time
Move the USB cable to a USB 2.1 port or older without the iPhone.
    Restart iTunes.
    Connect the iPhone
Your computer should recognize the phone and reloads the correct USB 2.1 driver (Apple Mobile Device)
Then iTunes should recognize the iPhone and starts reloading the firmware.
When that is complete it may ask if you wish to restore, naturally you say YES
    iTunes will restore the iOS
Using iTunes, restore the latest backup to get your data back.
When all of the above is completed.  Start enjoying your iPhone.
If the above does not work.  Throw your iPhone out of the window and get a replacement Android phone.

  • Solaris 8 Container in Solaris 10 Zone

    Hi All,
one of our customers wants to run Solaris 8 with Oracle 8.1.7 in a BrandZ Zone. Does anybody have an idea about how stable Solaris 8 is in a Zone environment? Are there any known issues with Solaris 8 running in a Zone?
Since Solaris 8 is EndOfShipment, are there chances to get up-to-date Sun Hardware bundled with Solaris 8 apart of using Solaris 10 Zones?
    Thanks in Advace,
    Dog

i didnt however i wasnt hammering it. if the load was expected to be high i would have done the io layout diff (try and follow some of oracles ideas: SAME for one, if possible).
some depends on the load and the load from the other zones. you can use allocate resource limits to give more priority to more important zones or make sure you have enough resources to start. what type of load are you expecting?

  • ISE 1.2 Time Zone

    Hi Community!!
I have a ISE 1.2 pair, v9 patch installed and sychronized. Recently our time zone changed to summer time which is one hour later. In the CLI I can see that the reference is sent by NTP and the clock has changed but in monitoring I can still see that there is an hour difference from real time.
I read in Cisco official documentation that time cannot be changed on ISE or else it will become unusable but the logs are not being timestamped correctly and also the time the RADIUS request are made by NAD vs the time they are recieved by ISE have one hour difference.
Is there a way to solve this? it seems to be prone to any kind of unexpected behaviour when we are least expecting it.
    Thank you!!

Hmm, this is very strange and it almost seems like a bug with ISE. I would recommend that you contact TAC and have them check this out.
The reason I think that it is a bug (Related to the timezone) is the fact that the base OS (Cent/ADE OS) appears to be running fine and keeping track of DST (Day light savings) but the actual application (ISE) installed on Cent is not.
I am far from NTP or Linux expert but I don't believe that NTP pushes/honors timezones. I think NTP just synchronizes the clock while timezones/DST is controlled locally.
If the issue is not a bug, it is perhaps due to selecting the incorrect timezone. I have never done a deployment outside of the US and the UK so I am not familiar with timezones in Chile. However, if we take Eastern Time Zone for example. I had to make sure that I select "EST5EDT" in ISE and not just EST. If I simply selected EST then DST was not observed and made things ugly :) The same applied for Pacific timzone where I had to make sure that I select "PST8PDT" With all of that being said, I checked the CLI in ISE and I don't see any Chile related timezones that would indicate DST observations. You can check for those yourself by using the following command "show timezones"
I was able to find these but perhaps there are more and a specific one to CST/CLST. I tried searching for those but could not find anything:
    NS-ISE-01/admin# show timezones | i Santiago
    America/Santiago
    NS-ISE-01/admin# show timezones | i Chile
    Chile/EasterIsland
    Chile/Continental
    NS-ISE-01/admin# show timezones | i CLT
    NS-ISE-01/admin# show timezones | i CLST
Let me know what you find. I would like to know the cause/resolution
