Zoom H4 as USB Mic for iMovie

I have a Zoom H4 recording device. I want to record a little film using the built-in video camera. Does iMovie recognise USB external microphones? As far as I can tell, I've followed the procedure to hook up the Zoom H4, and it has worked on Garage Band.

Dear Erik
First : thanks for your time.
I've carefully went through your check list.
My goal/aim is to record with my DPA 4006 mic.
But anyhow to establish the connection for now I use the build in stereo mic's for the test purpose.
You're absolutely right about what ZOOM offers it's two stereo mic (build-in) and two input (XLR) possible paired mono / or stereo (input 1/2 )
I've carefully chosen build in mic's in the ZOOM menu.
I've armed the track (in Logic ) and activated the "I" (input monitoring) ((by the way it doesn't show any input but that makes sense))
I've carefully checked that ZOOM is setup with audio format : wave sample rate 44.1 bit rate 16.
And double checked that LOGIC have the same in the project settings > Audio
Still it doesn't work

  • Trying to use Zoom Q2HD in USB MIC mode and it crashes GarageBand and the whole Ipad?

I bought the Zoom Q2HD video recorder to use for video and because it can be used at a USB Mic for iPad.  I recently bought a camera connection kit and last night tried to get the Zoom to work as a mic but it would either not work at all or it would crash GarageBand and the ipad and take me to the Apple logo as it restarted the iPad.
    Any ideas?

From the podcast link on the Garageband help page:
"Attach your preferred audio interface and a microphone to your Mac, or use your computer's built-in microphone. (Note: The iSight camera is not supported as a microphone input in GarageBand.)"

  • USB mic for talkback

    Hello
I have recently built a small home studio with a isolation booth.
I do not have many inputs on my interface therefore did not want to use an input(and a mic) for talkback
I thought a USB mic would be the solution.
I purchased a Logitech AK5370 but cannot hear/monitor myself. I have a line level reading, I can record my voice and play it back but cannot hear it in reatime.
I have read on forums of people having the exact opposite problem. That is they can hear themselves but cannot record their voice. I have no intention of using this mic for recording but thought it would be a cheap easy solution to my talkback problem. Wrong!
Unfortunately I am still running Panther and will be for some time therefore I do not have the audio aggregate tab in my midi audio set up. I tried using speech to no avail. Then used Garageband arming the track in record mode just to monitor my voice. I have a line level but can't hear myself. If I then record I can hear the result when played back but nothing at the time.
In my head I thought this would be so easy.
Has anyone tried this as a talkback mic or have any simple solutions?
    Thank You

It sounds like you have the input monitoring options set the opposite way round from how you need them.
    +Audio > Audio Hardware & Drivers > Software Monitoring+
    _Software Monitoring_
This option allows you to switch Software Monitoring (listening to the actual input signal) on or off. Please note that with Software Monitoring active, the audio signal is processed via software—a certain amount of audible delay (commonly referred to as “latency”) is inevitable. If you are listening to the recorded signal through your mixing desk, or your audio hardware supports hardware monitoring, you should switch this option off.
    _Auto Input Monitoring_
Input monitoring allows you to determine what signal is heard on record-enabled tracks. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, you will only hear the input signal during the actual recording—before and afterwards, you’ll hear the previously recorded audio on the track, while the sequencer is running. This helps you judge drop-in and drop-out points for punch recording. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched off, you will always hear the input signal. Auto Input Monitoring, when switched on, also allows you to hear the input source when Logic is stopped, making it easy to set levels.
    _Switching Auto Input Monitoring on/off_
Click-holding the Record button (Transport window) opens the Record menu, where you can toggle Auto Input monitoring. You can also use the Toggle Auto Input Monitoring key command, or enable it from the Audio menu.
    _Possible Problems with Input Monitoring_
Typical problems that can arise with record-enabled tracks:
    • Singers cannot hear themselves while Logic is running. All they can hear is the old recording. Switch off Auto Input Monitoring.
    • The track cannot be heard, even though Logic is not actually recording. Switch on Auto Input Monitoring.
Depending on the situation, both options can be useful. Normally, Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, and is only switched off in special situations. Whenever you are doing punch recording (punch on the fly), you should switch Auto Input Monitoring on.
However, even if you do switch your monitor settings, you may still have a logistical problem in that for anyone else to hear your talkback, you will usually have to be in Record mode in Logic. To get around the inconvenience of this, you might like to make sure your mic does not appear as an input option at all, but is routed through another application (I expect iChat would work). It can be done in Logic, of course, but it isn't very convenient for continued use.

  • ZOOM H2 usb mic issues

I am having volume and intermittent static issues when trying to use a Zoom H2 recorder as a usb mic going directly into my macbook. In Garage band and the sound preferences the volume being registered is almost half of what the little H2 screen is registering. So what is recorded by GB is alot softer than the mic is picking up. Also there is intermittent pops of static in the GB recording.
My GB records using the built-in mic just fine and even line-in fine (other than the low volume for line-in).
when I use my H2 as a portable recorder it works great. no static and no volume issues but when usb to my macbook i have those issues.
I have the lasted version of H2 firmware.
Also if i up the mic gain on the H2 it reds out on the H2 screen but more volume with the distortions on GB.
    any thoughts??

I'm having the same problems with my Zoom H2. Actually, it works well as a USB mic for about eight minutes, then it just sends static into the notebook. The static crops up in GarageBand and Skype.
I tried removing the batteries, switching the sampling rate, and installing the new firmware. Nothing worked.
Called Zoom today and they said they don't have the problem with their Macs. They told me to exchange the unit for another one and see if the problem persists.
The Zoom tech did mention that people have similar problems with PC USB ports that are underpowered. Similar, but not the same.
I have a Santa Rosa MBP, if that helps anything.
I'm going to exchange this recorder for a new one and hopefully that'll fix things.
I'll post here if it does.
    Good luck.
P.S. I've also read of static problems with the Zoom USB mic. Perhaps a QC issue with Zoom? Or some strange incompatibility with certain Macs?

  • Output sound distortion when USB Mic Connected

    Hi everyone,
Really appreciate anyone’s help on this sound distortion problem.
I have been using the new 2014 iMac 27' for last 8 Months, bought Brand New, and recently updated to Yosemite. Everything worked fine including recording, until this update.
I'm using Blue Yeti USB Mic for recording, and few days after the update I was trying to record in GarageBand and the output sound (via headphone connected to USB MIc) started to distort and then suddenly dropped the bitrate/ sound and I could only hear some clicks. I reinstalled the GargeBand, still its the same distortion happens. The sound gets back to normal, only for few seconds, after I unplug the USB cable from the Mic device. And I tried changing the bit rate and again sounds starts to drop after few sec. This happens only when I connect the Blue Yeti USB Mic and sound output from the Mic itself. Same thing happens with iTunes as well. Output sound from Internal mic and speakers are working fine as normal.
I tried connecting the USB Mic to my Windows laptop and its working fine with the Cubase 5 without any problem. So the problem is with the output sound, when external Mic connected.
I don’t know the solution for this. Have checked on every single blog/ thread, sill couldn’t find the answer I’m looking for, to fix this.
It would be great if you have any kind of a solution for the same.

Nope. The larger buffer didn't work. What did work was running a cord out of the 1/4-inch jack from the direct box to a 1/4-to-1/8-inch adapter and then into the mic/line-in jack on my computer. I set GarageBand to use the built-in line-in and had no static problems. It's a stopgap until this gets fixed.

  • USB Mic = No Output

I'm using a USB MXL .007 mic with Logic 8.0.2, and I can't get any sound output when my USB mic is selected as my Core Audio Device (I'm using it as an aggregate device I created per the instructions I've found on numerous posts).
I can only get sound output with the Built-In input setting, but then obviously I can't use my USB mic for input. So it's either one or the other but neither the twain shall meet. I'm sure there's got to be a simple explanation for this but I have no idea what I'm missing!

I am trying to use my brand new Blue Microphone Snowball USB mics, one on each USB port of my MacBook Pro. When I plug them in, the respective LED's light up indicating they are properly powered up. The Snowball shows up by name as an input device in Sys Pref>Sound>Input and it is selected. I followed the Logic Pro User Manual for setting up tracks, record and input are selected in the tracks, but I hear nothing through my Apogee Duet, which is selected as the Output device in Audio Preferences. My Duet is set to headphone monitoring, I hear nothing, I record nothing. There is something very basic I am missing here. Any ideas?

  • USB Mic Distortion

I recently bought a Samson G-Track USB microphone, to go with my new Macbook (running Leopard), but seem to get intermittent audio distortion when I record. I have been checking the record levels on the mic and garageband and it's not clipping. If anything the signal strength on the Garageband monitor seems low. I can sometimes record a signal ok and then with exactly the same setup next time it distorts. I have tried turning off all effects in case they are causing it. Looking at online discussion forums there seems to be a problem with the Apple USB driver (Audio Codec?).
    Anyone else had this problem?

I've had a Snowball USB mic for about a year and it sometimes has problems like you describe (basically signal breakup that sounds like clipping, even though the input level is not too high).
I first used it with a G4 Powerbook, and found that the perfomance depended on which port I used. The differences were dramatic.
I'm now using a MacBook, and there is variability when I record my band from session to session. I'm getting the feeling it might have to do with how well the power is sent from the USB port to the mic. But I don't have a good diagnostic.
I plan to sit down and run some trials, and would suggest you do the same. Plug in the mic, do a quick test and listen, then disconnect/reconnect the mic and repeat the test (changing ports or not).
I read recently that USB power is "dirty" and maybe these mics are very sensitive. If anyone has more info, I'd like to hear it.

  • USB mic sounds low on GarageBand

I just purchased a Samson CO1U usb mic for my podcast on GarageBand and the sound is very low. How can I fix that so it sounds like the built-in mic?

The Samson comes with a pre-amp software - use that to boost the volume! Also, look into the Audio/Midi Utility and make sure that your mic is a mono source, not stereo.

Use the audio/midi utility in your utilities folder to create an aggregate device using the mic and your usual audio interface. Than select that device in logics hardware driver pulldown menu.

  • Mic for Naration

My iMac does not have a mic port (that I know of) I am considering a usb mic for the task. Would this have better quality than the built mic? Any recommended products?
thanks in advance for any input.

Depending on what you buy, you can get better quality than the built in mic. I found the built in not very sensitive at picking up my voice, unless I was very close to the computer, which made it difficult to do a voice over and watch the video at the same time.
My choice was a Snowball USB mic by Blue, a well known music industry company. It gives excellent voice rendition at a reasonable price, around $100.00, if memory serves.

  • IMovie 10.0.5 crashes into millions of colored pixels when I add v/o narrative using Pages to read script from and using a USB mic attached to my iMac. I am running Mavericks OS X10.9.4

Hi, I have been editing a project for a week and over the past 2 days iMovie 10.0.5 has crashed into millions of colored pixels about 6 times. I am working on a 27" iMac running OS X 10.9.4 with 6GB of Ram, plenty of space on start up disc (217 GB's)  The crash seems to coincide with any effort to use an external USB mic plugged in to record a narrative. I can record the voice over but a few minutes later I get some awful audio scrubbing sounds and then it pixelates. Why is this happening and how can I work around this to record a voiceover please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm nervous to continue if my work is going to ultimately be lost. My project is currently about seventeen mins and includes, video clips from 2 different cameras (both Canon) a music track from iTunes and some still images (jpegs.)

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio from garageband be the sound when recording and not just your normal voice but garage band effects for youtube?

How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio form garageband be apart of the video when recording, meaning the audio from garageband and echo  and not just your normal voice for youtube post?its not add the garageband audio its just normal voice from mic no  effects is going thru?

    Hi Life93,
What you describe would be possible by recording your video, then removing the audio from it and adding audio from GarageBand once the video is in iMovie (I presume here that you are using iMovie for your video production. Other applications may need different methods.)

  • USB Mic not working in Premiere Pro CS6 for Mac

So I've been editing in Premiere Pro CS6 on a mac for 6 months now.  I have to do a temp VO for a project and I thought I'd try the Narration feature in the mixer.  For some reason my USB mic doesn't show up in the Audio Hardware so I can't pick it.  The same mic shows up in the Mac Audio Settings and even shows up in Audition.  I've been having to use Audition but was curious to see if anyone out there has gotten a USB mic to work in Premiere Pro on a Mac.  Would be a really cool feature if it worked.

Some USB mics work fine, but many do not. It can depend on the exact mic, or might require a different ASIO driver (maybe something like ASIO4All?), or different ASIO setting, to work.
    Good luck,

  • Can i use a usb mic input for livestreaming

I'm trying to livestream but theres no mic input on my iMac so could i use a usb-to-mic input for iMac. Thanks

You can use a mic with an 1/8th inch jack in the headphones port. You can also use one of those mics into a 1/8th to USB connector. You can also use a USB mic directly into the USB port.
