Zoom in  iphoto retina mac is 1/2 of zoom on non retina display .WHY?

When comparing Mac Book Pro and Mac Book Pro with retina display I noticed that the zoom in Iphoto is only 1/2 in retina Mac versus non retina Mac.
Any idea why?

Would do better posting in the actual MBP(R) forum

  • 13' MacBook Pro i5 dual core(non retina) vs 15' MacBook Pro i7 quad core(non retina)

I'm looking to buy a laptop, I'm going to use it for some photoshop, and daily use of excel,iTunes, web browsing, watch videos. The following laptops are which I'm looking at: 13' MacBook Pro i5 dual core(non retina) and 15' MacBook Pro i7 quad core(non retina). Please let me know what you suggest. I'm looking for a laptop to last me at least 5 years.

I'm trying to stick w/o having to buy the super drive and need a lot of memory to store so that's why the retina laptops didn't come to mind. I was looking at the refurbished section and apple is selling a (non retina) 15' MacBook Pro 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive, i7 quad core processor.

  • Maximum Memory Clarification - MBP 2012 (Non-Retina)

I have seen conflicting sources regarding the maximum amount of memory that can be put into the 2012 MacBook Pro 15" (Non-Retina). I would like to max out the memory.  Can it handle 16GB or only 8GB? I plan to use the additional memory for VMs. I would like to upgrade it with memory from Crucial (which is one of the places I've seen conflicting information).

Buy yourself a $10-20 2.5" USB enclosure for your 'old' drive (OWC is a good source).
Place the new SSD temporarily in the enclosure and connect to the Mac. Boot normally then use Disk Utility to format your SSD (GUID partition scheme / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format).
Use Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility  (i.e. your choice of cloning software) and make a clone of your internal drive onto your SSD.
Boot from the SSD - the first time may take a moment - be sure and select your SSD as the startup disk in System Preferences and you'll be booting in 14-15 seconds, tops. Test and make sure all is well and TRIM is enabled if necessary.
Swap the SSD with the HDD in drive bay: this requires removing ten screws from the back casing and two screws on the drive casing using a Phillips #000 screwdriver. You will also need a Torx screwdriver for four screws on the drive itself (I got an $18 from OWC).
After putting old drive in external enclosure, use as desired or keep as a backup.
    Enjoy!
This reduces the downtime during which the Mac is unusable in case of any problem. BTW, SuperDuper does not clone the all-important Recovery Mode partition on the Lions.
    Cheers.

  • Should I get the MacBook Pro 13" with retina display or the non retina display MacBook Pro?

Hi, I am just about to start sixth form, and I am looking for a laptop/notebook to do my work on, I have always wanted a MacBook Pro so, as I have to use my own money to buy this I have decided to choose a MacBook Pro as my preferred device that I would like to buy. The problem that I am facing is that I'm not sure which want to go for. I will not be doing any editing of photos or videos, I will be using this mainly for creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations, on the other hand I will be using safari quite a lot. The reason why I want the Retina display version is because of the display the downside to this though is that the storage of the Retina versions isn't as much as the non retina versions and I will need quite a bit of storage for all of my work that I will be doing. I have the money though to upgrade the storage when it comes to ordering the product. Any advice, I will be grateful for. Thanks

Another thing to consider is that the Retina MBP does not have an optical drive.  You will need to purchase an external optical drive.  The non-Retina MBP do have an optical drive.
I do not know what sixth form is.  If it has anything to do w/education,  you should check into Apple - Education Discounts

  • Seems like non retina macbook pro is more expensive than retina macbook pro!

MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.6 GHz is $2,299.00 with the Antiglare Widescreen Display now. If I wanna upgrade it with Crucial 16GB kit ($80) and 256GB Crucial m4 2.5" SSD with Data Transfer Kit ($220) it's gonna coast $2,599.00 all together.  On the other hand, with the base Retina version with the upgrades (2.6 GHz, 16GB) from Apple It only coasts 2,499.00.  I even save $100 for my external DVD burner if I want to get one. Most people say on this forum non retina is cheaper than retina MAcbook pro but I couldn't figure it out how please tell me if I am missing anything!
I have been looking for most discussions in this forum about retina and non retina Macbook pro.  Most people think that upgrading is the biggest issue with the Retina Macbook pro but can we upgrade the non retina version more than 16GB?  if we can't it's not an issue.  With the SDD I guess we can go with the external ones if we really need one and I assume that external SSD's are going to get cheaper in the time too or we can get external USB3 / Thunderbolt hard drives.  I just decided to purchase one of these Macbook pro and started looking for more information online to figure out which one is better but I got more confused because the numbers say the Retina is cheaper and upgrading is not that big of a deal but most people who know about Apple products more than me on this forum say non Retina is cheaper and it can be upgraded after purchasing it.
I might be wrong with my thoughts but I need some info about upgrading. What rigs can I upgrade with the non retina Macbook pro?
(Only RAM and Hard drive or more than that?)  I would like to know your thoughts and advises too?
    Thanks for your help!
I am thinking of getting one of these for video editing (Final cut pro X)!

Yep, the only things that you can upgrade on the non-Retina models is the RAM and the HD/SSD. I'm assuming that your calculations are correct, so you've just got to decide if you want to the Retina display model or not. For me, there have been too many issues with the Retina models to buy one just now - but I'm sure that there are a lot of happy Retina owners out there - we only hear from those having problems.

  • Macbook Pro 15in mid 2012 Non-Retina Freeze

Macbook Pro 15in mid 2012 Non-Retina Freezes randomly. OSX 10.7.4. Do not have Google Chrome installed. I have to press the power button to restart. Any idea how to fix this?
When ever the computer restarts it looks like this:
    http://i45.tinypic.com/2mrin7t.png

I would like to share my experience with the random freezing on my brand new Retina MacBook Pro.
This may apply to non-Retina and MacBook Airs, too.
My rMBP had randome freezes; seemingly starting from Safari, then spreading to the whole system, refusing to launch programs, etc., forcing me to restart every 1-2 hours. There was just no other way to come out of this coma other than forced rebooting.
Tried all the usual recommended remedies, but nothing worked. It's been about 2 weeks like this.
Then I remembered from my past experiences that with every new hardware there seemed to be issues with graphics card/driver. I did the following and so far I havent' had a crash for 24 hours and counting.
    1. Turn OFF "automatic graphicss switching". You can do this in System Preference>Energy Saver. It's the top tick box. Untick for both AC Power and Battery Power.
    2. Turn OFF "automatically adjust brightness". System Preference>Displays.
Can't tell if it's the combination of the two or one effecting the other, but seems to work!
I have a feeling it's the "automatically adjust brightness" could be the culprit.

  • Macbook Pro 15 inch retina vs non retina refurbs

    Hi Everyone,
I know this question has been asked 100s of times, but I feel in this case it might be best to ask directly.
I am buying a new macbook pro, which I will be using for primarily video editing (using, fcpx, PP and Avid)
There are two avaiblable refurb models, a retina and non retina.  Normally, I would lean towards the non retina, because of its user replaceable parts.
However, the cost of upgrades to the non-retina would be almost 500 dollars more to get it close in line to what the retina model offers out of the box.
Same specs in both, 500 dolllars more for non retina with upgrades.  So in short my question is, is there anyone here who would still go with a non-retina model with that 500 dollar price difference?  Has anyone had any serious issues with the retinas?
Would love to hear peoples thoughts.

    Thanks for the Reply Marcus,
I know it almost seems like a no-brainer, but the non-replaceable parts really concerns me. I've had my current macbook pro for 5 years now, (having to replace a few things in the last year) and I would like this next purchase to last as long.  If say something goes after the 3 year apple warranty expires, do you know how much something like the hard drive or audio jack or battery would cost to replace?  Also, the non retina is a high res matte screen, if that makes any difference to anyone.
    Thanks again,
    jeremy

  • Would restoring a MacBook Pro (non-Retina) with a MacBook Pro (Retina) backup cause problems?

I have a Retina MacBook Pro and I recently bought a non-Retina MacBook Pro.  I wanted to have all my files and settings from my old MacBook on my new one so I backed up the Retina one using time machine and I used that backup to set up my new MacBook.  Will doing this cause any problems to the system?
    Thanks,
    CK
P.S. I have been experiencing some issues with wifi (it drops the connection often) and I am not sure if that is related.

    It should not.  Read this:

  • Can an iPhoto Library be copied from Retina back to Non-Retina?

Does anyone know if I would be able to copy an iPhoto library from a Retina Macbook Pro to a non-Retina Mac?
I remember when upgrading to the Retna MacBook Pro, iPhoto upgraded all of my Thimbnails...
    Has anyone tried this?

Sure  --  connect the systems and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures foolder of the other system and launch iPhoto (it must be the same or newer as the iPhoto on the original system)

  • How to use iPhoto on Mac and iOS in conjunction

I'm using iPhoto on both my Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the new Photo Stream and the new iPhoto iOS app has been released I think it is all started to get a little confusing. Here is some of my thoughts.
    1) When I delete a photo from my Photo Stream the photo gets deleted on all my devices. Nice. On my Mac, iPhoto is for instance creating a "mar. 2012 Photo Stream" event, where all photos from the Photo Stream is keept -- also the deleted once. That's OK. On my Mac I can cleanup these events by deleting the unwanted photos. All my photos are synced to iPad but it seems, that I cannot cleanup these events on iPhoto on my iPad. Is that right? I'm able to "hide" the photos from the events, but that does not delete them -- and they are still visible on my Mac after their are synced.
    2) I have an "Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit" making me able to import photos from my camera to my iPad, which I do daily when I'm on vacation. I thought that I could just import the photos to my iPad, put them in an event/album, edit/retouch them -- and when my iPad gets near my Mac the events/albums gets synced to my iPhoto on my Mac (without having to import them to the Mac manually). But it seems that the Camera app on my iPad is just putting the imported Photos in the "Last Import" album. How is Apple thinking we should do this? I cannot find a way to move them to an Event.
    3) Generally, the difference between Albums and Events in iPhoto iOS seems unclear. After the new iPhoto for iOS was released, I was hoping that I could edit, retouch and choose the best photos from an Events and put them in an Album. I can create a Journal with these photos but that is not always what I want. For instance if I would like to make a slideshow for my TV, it would be nice to have a clean album where only the best photos from an event. How is Apple thinking this should be done?
Please tell me how you are using iPhoto on Mac and iOS. For me it does not work perfectly.

Not only do they not work perfectly, they do not work together at all. Pretty much the only thing they share is a name. They are quite independent apps. Editing history on one can not be carried over to the other, so you can't start working on shots on one device and continue on the other. Events, Albums etc have no relation with each other and so on. Perhaps the next version of iPhoto (for either OS) will move them closer together but at this time they have no relationship at all.

  • Bug? Zooming out via key shortcut won't stop when zooming out (Mac OS 10.7.3)

    Hey,
while I created a new document, I started to zoom in/out particular areas of the images using the key shortkuts <space>+<cmd> for zooming in and <space>+<cmd>+<alt> for zooming out of an area.
While this works fine in my Photoshop CS5, it troubbles in CS6:
Once I want to zoom out (via <space>+<cmd>+<alt> and a left-mouseclick), the zooming won't stop until it reached the smallest zoom level, instead of zooming out just a step. It however works, while I zoom in (via <space>+<cmd> and a left-mouseclick).
I'm so used to this shortcut since a cupple of versions now (it also works in other programms as well) and it is realy annoying.
It also happens that when I press <space> and another key (e.g. to zoom in/out) that Photoshop CS6 does sometimes not release the hand-tool, that I use to move the canvas via holing <space> and left-mouse down. Pressing <space> again solve this. However, I would exspect the hand-/move-tool only to work while <space> is pressed.
    Thanks.

    Hey,
    > Do you run into the issue in Photoshop it the case when you use <CMD>+< - > ?
No, works fine. Although its not the best alternative, because my method allows to "specify" the zooming region (due to the mouse position)
    > Did you try to reset the zoom tool (Right-click on the magnifier icon on the option bar?)
I did do a reset, but it didn't influence the "bad" behavior.
    > Do you have a key repeater function activated in the OS (accessibility?)?
None that I know of. Couldn't find any. But if so, shouldn't it affect the zooming in as well (which isn't the case)?
    > If you never use the animated zoom, you can disable it in Photoshop>preferences>general>animated zoom.
I tried both: enabled it causes the mentioned "error" behavior. Disabled the zoom out stops but its remarkably unresponsive: Once I use the key combination and click the left-mouse-btn it takes seconds before the zoom out happes; the process _feels_ quite long.
    Best,

  • Photo journals on iPhoto for Mac

    Hi,
Will Photo Journals be added to iPhoto for Mac (and not only an IOS iPhoto feature)?
I used to use a lot the mobileme gallery, and the photo journals could be a great alternative.
    Thanks

    Antoine,
since we are only users here like you, we can only guess. Please send feedback to Apple, that you want journals.

Depending on the age of your machine and the version of iPhoto, you may be able to download it from the App Store - but you'll need her account details to do so.
Other than that you'll need to purchase it on the App Store.

  • Mac Book Pro 2013 Non Retina

I was looking at the Apple Stores newest Mac Book Pros (later 2013) and I noticed that all the newest Mac Book Pros have Retina. Is there an option to not get Retina with these newer ones? I want to save money on that and also I would liek to get less RAM and then upgraded it later, and from my understanding you cannot upgrade the RAM in a Retina Mac Book Pro. I was specifically looking at a 15" Mac Book Pro with the nVidia Card.

    Hi macjsus,
Unfortunately the newest Mac Book Pros are only retina display and the Apple trend is in that way. I bought my Mac Book Pro a few days ago and I upgraded it improving the RAM up to 16gb for US $250 approximately . If I had bought  a Mac Book Pro Retina Display I would need a lot of money for this improvement.
    Have a nice day!
