Zoom Selection Tool

Can't get the Zoom tool to drag a selection around a section of an image. Any ideas how to make this function work. I'm using Elements 10.

I'm watching a video where an area is selected with the zoom tool. I'm fairly sure this is in Elements.

  • Zoom issue when using selection tool in Photoshop CS5

Hi, i have a macbook pro with a multi touch trackpad. For some reason when i'm using the selection tool and i try zooming in or out using the multi touch track pad nothing happens or sometimes it takes forever for anything to take place. Other times, i have to resort to using the keypad to zoom in or out.
what could be causing this issue as it is really slowing me down

Hi - thanks for your comments. It was happening on all of the selection tools however I have solved the problem by changing the 'Advanced Graphics Processor Setting' to 'Basic' in Photoshop CC.
    Thanks anyway

  • Zooming whenever I double-click on any margin of pages with Hand Tool or Selection Tool selected

I have used Acrobat and recently upgraded it to Acrobat XI in order to use it with my tablet PC.
But whenever I double-click with my digitizer pen, with Hand tool or Selection Tool selected, on any margin of pages, it zooms in. i.e. it automatically magnifies itself as if I did the same thing with magnifying tool. This happens even when I try to double-click on the textboxes to edit it!
I don't want to zoom it all the time!!!

Try switching off this setting: Edit - Preferences - General - Make hand
    tool use mouse-wheel zooming.

  • Zoom-in tool and selected objects

    Hi there,
I am wondering about the possibility of making the zoom-in tool directs to the selected Object or Layer, and how that increase the accessibility with the shortcuts like CTRL+(+).
    Regards,

    Hi,
you should make "selection objects" which represent your rect.s.
they could have a drawMe(Rectangle source, Rectangle dest) method which would be called in the rendering loop. While source represents the selected area of the orignal image and dest the destination aera which drawMe would actually draw the image into.
Source would get set on mouse up after dragging, dest would be set after the click equal to your drawing area.
I'm not sure about the actual image scaling but i think it can be done similar like that: http://www.rgagnon.com/javadetails/java-0243.html.
You dhould definately have a look at javax.imageio.*;just some ideas

  • How do i change the default hand tool to select tool when a document opens?  also how do i get it to open in a single page view instead of 2 pages side by side

how do i change the default hand tool to the select tool when i open a document.
how do i change the view from 2 pages to a single page?

Try setting the check boxes in Edit>Preferences>General for the following:
    - Make Hand tool select text & images
    - Make Hand tool read articles
    - Make Hand tool use mouse-wheel zooming
Adjust these as needed but does it make any difference?

  • How do I specify exact corners with the rectangular selection tool?

Suppose I have an image 2000 pixels wide by 1000 pixels high.  Pixel (0,0) is at the top left as you view the image.  Using the rectangular selection tool, how can I specify an exact area to select?  Say, for example, I want to select the area defined by (0,0), (100,0), (100,100) & (0,100), how would I do this?
I'm using Photoshop CS6 on a Mac with OSX 10.8.3.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

    Mylenium,
33,406 posts!  That's amazing.  Thanks for your technique for specifying an exact selection size.  I tried it out and it works, but is there a way to get the marquee to snap to the guides, as opposed to snapping to pixels.  I can't quite get the marquee to fall exactly where I place the guides, at least not easily.
Here's a method I've come up with since posting my question.  (I guess I should have tried harder to figure this out before asking the question.)
Figure out beforehand where you want the corners of the selection marquee to be.
Activate the rulers: View>Rulers or (Cmd-R.)
    Set rulers to pixels: Photoshop>Preferences>Units&Rulers>Rulers>Pixels
    Select the rectangular selection tool.
In the menu bar for the selection tool choose Style>Fixed Size.  Then in the dimension boxes to the right of the Style button, type in the width and height you want for your selection, e.g. 200 by 100 pixels.
Zoom in on where you want the top left pixel of your selection to be.  Zoom in enough to clearly see the pixel.
With the selection tool active, click-and-release on the pixel you have zoomed in on.
Go back to normal view (Cmd-0) and you should see your entire selection.
This answers my own question, and with your method I now have two ways to do this.
    Thanks,
    Kevin H.

  • Photoshop Crashes after quick selection tool

Did the 14.2 update today and since then i have been unable to use the quick selection tool, followed by quick mask. The PC Crashes.
Photoshop CC has worked perfectly until now
Please help, I am on a deadline for images for an online website, I so wish I had not updated
Image below shows quick mask, the selection was the top right above the frogs eye, but look at the red mask, also Task manager shown(it says Photoshop not responding)
This was the sequence of events if it helps
The Pc was working from a clean reboot.
    I opened Photoshop
Opened an image off the camera
cropped to 1000px wide (72 dpi)
    Quick selection
    Quick mask
This is the result (happened 5 times to date so going for a coffee in the hope someone has a solution soon!)
    Many thanks

I have reproduced it myself on one occasion, though it did not lock Photoshop up for me.  It's been reported to Adobe.
There may be some connection to the zoom level.  Out of curiosity, are you using Scrubby Zoom?
It might be prudent to try configuring Photoshop to use either the "Normal" or "Basic" drawing mode instead of "Advanced", though it is of course a bit difficult to know right away whether the problem has been worked-around.
    -Noel
P.S., you said "The PC crashes"...  Are you speaking of something beyond the Photoshop application locking up as you have shown above?  An application locking up isn't the same as a system crash.

  • Zoom Selection Area Response

When I use the zoom tool and select a rectangle, it means I want to zoom into that rectangle, even if the rectangle is larger than the document. I do this sometimes because I want some gray area on purpose so I can use it to deselect things or start a mask selection outside of the document. Instead of just assuming I want to zoom to fit, will you please make it actually zoom to my selection? Or at least give me an option in the preferences that allows me to turn off smart zooming or something? There is such a thing as too smart!
    Thanks for listening

Don't like your fit-to-rectangle zoom? Select a different rectangle.
Maybe you don't understand the request. What I mean is when you have the zoom tool selected, even with a blank document, and say you zoom out then then you want to zoom in to a very specific zoom level that would allow you to see the entire bounds of the active document, but with a couple inches of window background around it, allowing you to use the brush tool to stroke even the edge of the document with the very edge of the brush. Assuming this is a fat brush, it wouldn't be possible to paint the border of the document in this way unless you had sufficient window background space around the document. For me, this is usually a couple inches of a margin.
Instead, Photoshop just assumes that if I'm so far zoomed out and I perform a zoom selection that I want to zoom to fit, but if that's what I wanted I would have right-clicked >> zoom to fit!

  • Problems with Direct Select tool

Maybe I'm just dumb or something but the Direct Select tool is just broken.
    1. When trying to move points ( remember this is the direct select tool - it's only function!) It moves the entire object unless you perfectly hover and wait over the point.
    2. When trying to select a point you grab the placed image inside the frame.
Shouldn't it work EXACTLY like it does in Illustrator? If I click on an object the entire thing selects then I can move it if I wish. But the cursor seems to snap to the point so much better in illustrator!
If I want to move the image inside the frame I wouldn't be using the Direct Select Tool. I'd by using the select tool. Moving the image shouldn't even be an option when using this tool.
This is probably the most frustrating part of Indesign. Please fix this.

Your frustration is understandable. Anchor point selection is unforgiving in InDesign, especially when compared to Illustrator with Smart Guides, although I wouldn't call it "broken."
I suspect most InDesign users don't do enough "path editing" on their InDesign pages for there to be an outcry over this.

It shouldn't be able to select and move an image. That is not the point of the tool.
That's always been a function of the Direct Select tool. Simply, if you're aiming for an anchor point and select the frame's content instead, you've missed the point. <rimshot>
There's nothing broken, and no advice to offer, other than zoom in further, slow down, and keep an eye on the pointer cues which change when the pointer is over an anchor point. I suppose it's also possible you could make adjustments to your mouse/input device settings that might help you move and click more precisely.

  • Arrow keys with direct select tool problem

    Hi list,
I hope somebody can help me. I just switched from MX to CS3.
Now selecting an anchor with the direct select tool and
    moving it with
the arrow keys moves it 30 Steps at once (Using normal select
    tool works
as usual). Strangely enough I have to undo 30 Times for one
    time hitting
    the arrow key.
Does anyone know this problem or have a hint where to switch
    this?
    thanks in advance

  • Strange behavior when resizing with 'Selection Tool'

    Hello,
I have a really strange issue when using selection tool to resize object. I have several rectangles stacked and grouped inside a layer. When I select one of them (either in Layer panel or with Group selection tool) and switch to 'Selection Tool (V)' to resize it, this tool behaves diferently at diferent zoom levels. Only at 200% zoom it behaves as it shoul.. With 100-150% zoom result is diferent - like there's a invisible box around selected object and I'm resizing it.. I've tried to explain the issue in attached image.. Anyone knows why is this happening?
    Thanks.

    - make new document, size 16383x16383px
    - create rectangle any width, hight say 200px (or anything less then 320px for 5% zoom)
    - select rectangle and show bounding box
    - try resizing hight by stretching bounding box
    - this is how same selection looks at diferent zoom levels
    - same zoom level as befor, hight 100px..

  • Why does the vector selection tool (white arrow) change layer selection to another vector mask?

I have been continually annoyed, when creating a vector mask-heavy document, with trying to select vector mask points by dragging a rectangle only to find that it instead selects a layer higher up which has a larger vector mask.
The only workaround is to manually select the points of my mask or to drag a rectangle from outside the canvas, meaning I have to zoom out or scroll to the edge - sometimes annoying if I am zoomed in quite far.
Does anyone know any resolution for this?
I know that the move tool can be set to automatically select a layer, depending on what part of the image is clicked, but why is there not an option to turn this off for vector editing?

What version of Photoshop are you using????
The White Arrow tool is the direct selection tool and it work best way you point it at a path segment line and click once.  When you do all the control points in a close path segment will be marked with little squares and the two control point adjacent to where you clicked will have handles you can adjust.
You can also drag out a rectangle with the direct selection tool. When you do you may select many closed paths in a path a path may have many sub paths and each has a mode like add, subtract, intersect etc, and each has a stacking order like in a layer stack. So if you drag out a rectangle many paths control points will be marked and control point adjacent to crossing rectangle will have handles. Can be very confusing.
Here are two screen capture the first on shows the layer palette and path palette.  You can see many shapes and path with sub paths and modes. I also targeted layer a vector mask. The selected the direct selection tool and in the image window I pointed at the 45 degree oval path near the top right. You cab see the four control points and two with handles.   The second screen capture  I only captured the image window. I used the direct selection tool and draged out a rectangle and you cab see many segments control points and many have handles. I have no problem selecting what I want to select

  • Why won't the Quick Select tool select transparent canvas.

I remember being able to select anything on the canvas with my Quick Select tool in CS5.5 Photoshop Extended. Recently, making the switch to CC, the Quick Select tool will show my slection as I drag along the canvas, but once I release the mouse, the selection seems to be reduced to the visible pixels. I was intentionally trying to fill the transparent sections with my effects as well.
Mind you, the magic wand will select transparent pixels just fine, but it also adds unintentional sections which is irritating. I should probably also pint out that I already looked into the "lock transparence" option in the layers, but I did not activate anything of the sort.

I see how my question can be kind of vague, sorry about that.
I have an image with a transparent background and a layer with, as stated below, pixels missing. With the wand, when I select a section of the layer that has no pixels, it selects every transparent section of that layer within the canvases borders. Thing is, I only wish to select a particular transparent section without touching the existing pixels. My hands are not as gifted as I would like them to be when painting a mask unless I zoom in ten-fold for every inch of the image.
To clarify further, the Quick Select tool's marquee shows everything working as I would expect it to until I release the mouse button. Then, for a reason beyond me, the selection gets reduced to existing pixels in the layer only.

  • A keyboard shortcut from Type tool to Selection tool

I'm in a text box so I cannot use 'Space' +my normal key shortcut to change to the Selection tool. It's a long way to go with the mouse each time I need to do this. Depressing the CMD key changes the cursor to the Selection tool while I hold it down, but letting CMD up leaves me in the Type tool and in the text box, even if I click outside the text box while holding down CMD. In Illustrator I use a shortcut with OPT or CTRL but this does not work in InDesign.
Any ideas? I hope Adobe clears this up since not having a quick way to bounce back from Type tool to Selection tool via the keyboard is a real drag on a 30" screen.

I too use F1 for the Selection Tool and F2 for the Direct Selection Tool. I've also set F3 as the Preview button (previously the W key) and F4 is Scale Tool and F5 is Rotate Tool.
The great thing about assigning these keys to F Keys rather than character keys it means even if you have a cursor flashing in a text frame you can still switch tools without having to deselect the text frame. What prompted me to look into this was when I once noticed a rogue V and A in a text frame on a job I was designing! If it had gone to print with these letters showing I would have been in a lot of bother so I changed it. This shortcut was discussed on an early episode of InDesign Secrets Podcast :-)
I'd certainly recommend changing this potentially problematic shortcut, it's quite easy to to hit the V key when a text frame is live but out of sight on another page and then you have a superfluous character in your artwork.
If only I could remap the zoom tool to the Control key I'd be very happy. Does anyone know how to do that or is it embedded in the structure of the app?

  • OpenGL seemingly deactivates after use of quick selection tool (PS CS5)

Before using the quick selection tool, I am able to smoothly zoom in and out by holding Ctrl+Space and dragging with the mouse.
If I use the quick selection tool, however, the marching ants line turns into a strange box. I no longer am able to zoom smoothly but instead with the technique above I draw a rectangle which I zoom into. This indicates to me, that OpenGL has been deactivated. I want my smooth zoom back!
I noticed that the preferences always show OpenGL as active, no matter which of the above "state" I'm in. I tried updating my AMD graphics card's driver without success. I found a post describing similar OpenGL problems on the same graphics card and installed the linked driver; the post was 2 years old, but it worked. Re-installing more recent version (Catalyst-Version 12.6) brought the problem back. Newer versions of the driver seem all to suffer from the same problem.
    I'm using
    Windows 7 64-bit,
64-bit Photoshop Extended from CS5 Production Premium,
    AMD Radeon HD 4600 (currrently Catalyst-Version 13.1).
    I tried:
"Downgrading" the driver (only really old version worked, as mentioned above),
reseting Photoshops preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift at start),
deactivating OpenGL (reactivating only works after restart and problem reappears) but I miss the smooth zoom.
I hope I could clarify the problem and thank you for reply!

    I seriously can't download version 13.4...
This is my input for the driver search on their homepage (I'm German, that's why some words are German...):
This is the result I get from the above input:
I have not a single clue, how I am supposed to download another version than the current. AMD makes it really difficult for me.
Maybe someone could post a link to another version? That would be really nice!
Also I tried the "Driver Autodetect". Catalyst-Version 13.1 is now installed...
This actually seems to be a thread for the AMD-Support, but maybe someone knows a workaround?
