Zooming In - Captivate 5

Hello. I am using Captivate 5 and am having trouble with the zoom.
I would like to zoom in on relevant buttons / windows, but they always artifact due to the low resolution. What I don't understand is that I see many videos where this is not a problem. For example, please see this video on the Apple website - http://support.apple.com/kb/VI207 . I can't get this effect from Captivate because you can only record the entire project in one resolution (ie. 720p) and if you exceed the resolution in your zoom window proportionally, it only artifacts.
Am I missing something? I would appreicate any insight as to how I can get Captivate to zoom like in the video I mentioned.
Thanks!

That is what I mostly explain when teaching Software tutorials with Captivate. It is a quick way to create a Show me, Try, Test me combination. You just add a 'menu' slide with branching to the three parts.

• Zoom w/ Captivate 5 - source area playback

Hello -
I'm creating a zoom like I did in Captivate 4, and it's not working once published. I'm trying to zoom in on a section of a screen capture of an application screen. When published, the zoomed box (zoom destination) displays with a solid color filled in instead of showing the image selected by the zoom source.
For the Zoom Source settings:
- Fill is set to Alpha 0% for completely transparent
- Stroke is set to a color with 1 width
- Fill Outer Area is not selected (but has same effect when selected)
For the Zoom Destination settings:
- Fill is set to Alpha 0% for completely transparent
- Stroke is set to a color with 2 width
When played back in preview mode it look like it works correctly in showing a zoomed view of the part of the screen I selected, but when published it displays the zoom as a solid color.
Anyone else seen this and know how to fix?
Thanks!
Katherine

Hello,
Really want to see what is happening, but cannot reproduce your issue. The only case where I did see some issue was when inserting the zoom object on an imported PPT-slide that had animations on it. Did you check the transition, because by default it is Fade in and out, which can cause weird views when the object is there for a small duration. Is there a possibility to check one of your projects directly?

• Deep Zoom for Captivate

I"m developing a quiz that will require the comparison of two
high res images and require the user to input the correct matching
elements between each picture. I've created something similar in
flash cs3, but I am wanting to import the functionality into
captivate. I've scoured the web but can not find any info on such a
collaboration between the two products. I'm hoping the widget is
the missing link between the two. Anyone care to speculate or hire
their services out?

How do you plan to "input the correct matching elements"?
It's possible to create content in Flash and use it in
Captivate as "animations" and widgets so I don't see why it
couldn't be done.

• Export to PDF is Being Cutoff-CP6

When exporting a project in CP6 (actually I tested in CP5.5 and it was the same), the PDF version cutoffs off the project when viewed at 100%. If you increase to 125%, you can see the whole project but then you have a white frame because it is bigger than the project.
Is anyone else seeing this and if so, do you know how to fix it?
Thanks.

The PDF opens at 100% and the presentation is cutoff. If I set the zoom level to 125%, it shows too much (I guess I'm not zooming to 125%...it is the opposite of zoom :-)
The Captivate projects are ones that I downloaded from Adobe's site as tutorials here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/adobe-captivate-presenter-elearning-suite-examples. The resolution is 880x660 (the first example on the page).
Yes, I am checking "export PDF" in the publish options.

• Captivate 8 - can't zoom in/out to view content in web browser

I'm running Captivate 8 on PC Win7-64bit. After publishing a simulation module (Flash SWF) to HTML for viewing in different browsers (Chrome, IE, Firefox), we can't zoom in or out of module like we can in Captivate 5. You'd typically can press CTLT +/- to zoom/out to resize text or graphics for better viewing. I can rescale the browser window but not the content inside. What's the resolution to this issue? Anyone out there?
thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,
Same thing happened to me...I'm assuming this is because you didn't create your project as a "Responsive" project. If you need to convert an old project, you have to go to File > New Project > Responsive Project and then open your old project and COPY/PASTE the slides into the responsive project. Obviously, your shapes / objects might rearrange but they are usually easy to adjust. However, if you have a quiz attached I believe you will have to re-add from scratch (that was my experience anyways). Also, don't forget to activate your "Mobile Gestures". All of this will allow you to zoom as much as you want. The drawback of using the Responsive project is that it ONLY publishes in HTML5 (Not SWF, MP4, etc.) Hope this helps!

• Captivate 7 Zoom Function

I was making changes to a course originally produced in Captivate 5.5, updating the content using Captivate 7. I ran across a problem where a zoom area no longer functions as it did when produced in Captivate 5.5. When originally produced in Captivate 5.5, highlight boxes placed in the zoom source area zoomed-out to the size of the zoom destination area, as expected. Now with Captivate 7, the highlight boxes appear on screen, but do not zoom-out as before. I’ve tried reinserting the zoom area to no avail.

The function looks okay on stage, but when published the highlight boxes from the zoom source do not zoom-out to the zoom destination.

• Zoom and Pan in Captivate 6

I see all sorts of talk about the lack of a good zoom and pan in captivate 5.5, but I can't seem to find anything on this feature in Captivate 6. I've used Camtasia in the past and this feature really helps makes presentations pop. Does this feature exist within the newest version of Captivate.
I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered; I wasn't able to find anything.
Thanks!

Hi,
This is now intriduced in Captivate 6. You can check this feature when you record the Video Demo in Cp 6. Check the screenshot.

• Can the Adobe Photoshop Layer Support with Captivate 4 be use to show a Zoom & Pan Effect?

I'm working with a client that is interested in creating the "Zoom & Pan" effect you get with Camtasia using Captivate 4. I'm not finding enough information to support that this is possible with Captivate 4. The Photoshop Layer Support feature with Captivate 4 comes across as something that may work to some degree however, it is again unclear if it would definitely work to give the zoom & pan effect I am looking for. Would anyone mind explaining this feature in greater detail and/or offering any ideas for how I can show the zoom & pan effect in Captivate 4?

Hi there
LOL, good luck with that!
NOTHING in Captivate will achieve what you are seeing in Camtasia. Sorry, there simply is no comparison. Sure, Captivate has panning while recording, but what you end up with are several herky jerky snapshots of suddenly being in a different screen area. Sort of reminds me of walking through a room while slowly closing and opening your eyes. In other words, you are seeing version 1 of the panning feature. We hope it improves, but it's not there yet.
If you have Camtasia, you could combine it with Captivate for some nice and interesting effects and have the best of both worlds! I do that.

• Captivate 8: Zoom area doesn't show all action going on inside it

I'm using Captivate 8. I want to zoom in to a line and then explain what elements it has by highlighting each element in turn. I have three Highlights, and the Zoom-area shows only the first one, then this Highlight stays in the Zoom-area and other Highlights are not shown. The first Highlight overlaps with the 'Zoom for' time of the Zoom-area.
When I play the slide in the Playback mode, everything works fine, but in the Preview mode, or when I publish the project, it doesn't work. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a workaround?

Hi there
As you have discovered, the zoom source area is not dynamic. It just grabs a static copy of whatever is in the area and zooms it to be larger.
What you need to do is fashion the highlights so that they are on that larger area where you want them. Or, create a new slide with an image of the zoomed up as part of the slide and add the highlights to that slide.
Cheers... Rick

• How do you zoom in on a portion of the screen in Captivate 8?

As the title says, I can no longer figure out how to zoom in on a portion of the screen using Captivate 8. Adobe, of course, had to change it from version 7. How does one go about doing it?

Zoom Area is under the big Objects button.

I have seen some postings on this topic, but they are either left unresolved or the suggested work around was for a specific user.
I draw the Zoom Source rectangle and corresponding Zoom Destination rectangle. The two drawings match in terms of showing the same content. Yet when I publish or preview the project the Zoom Destination is showing an area NOT defined in the Zoom Source.
My search on this bug seems to return posts from several years ago, and any suggestions seemed to apply to the specific poster, not a general audience.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Handycam,
This warning shows up when you try binding to an object that doesn't implement IEventDispatcher.
Object does not implement IEventDispatcher so any time you bind to a property of that object you will get a warning.
If you define a subclass of EventDispatcher with the properties you want:
MyBindableObject.as:
package {
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
public class MyBindableObject extends EventDispatcher {
[Bindable] public var label:String;
[Bindable] public var data:Number;
And then replace the objects in your ArrayCollection with instances of MyBindableObject then the warnings should go away.
SampleList.mxml:
<s:Application
xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"

• Captivate course crashes when zooming in on iPad

Hi,
I am having a weird problem and am wondering if anyone else has exprienced something similar. I've published a course as html5 (Captivate7, includes the patch from November), SCORM 1.2.
The course itself, and it's content, plays just fine on the iPad. However, whenever I zoom in, it crashes Safari. I have the course posted to our LMS.
To test if it's the LMS, I've uploaded the course to scormcloud, and it has played fine. However, I noticed, that user zooming seems to be disabled on scormcloud, so I couldn't actually check if it is simply the zooming in, that causes the issue, or if it is my LMS.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, or has anyone figured out a way to avoid this? I know it's possible to disable zooming into websites using meta tags, but am not sure how to make that happen with a file published from Captivate.
Thanks

This worked for me, thanks

Re: iPad Mini Safari scrolling problem
Jan 1, 2013 11:15 AM (in response to amirfromcupertino)
I was dealing with this same issue an my iPad Mini. Here's what I did yesterday and I haven't seen the problem since:
1) Go to Settings >> Safari
2) Turn on Private Browsing
3) Clear Cookies & Data
I cannot guarantee this will always solve the problem, but it has worked for me.
Let me know if that works for anyone else :)
P.S. I'm a developer myself and I would give the software developers a little slack. Programming is more crazy than people think. Most likely they expected the iPad Mini to work exactly like the full-size iPad, but bugs always pop up. It will get fixed :) Chrome is always an alternative if Safari is struggling.

• Captivate 2 Zoom In - How can I do that?

Hello,
I saw the Captivate 2 "Zoom In" introduction video at Adobe
website. The video show the "Sleeping Girl" picture zoom in larger
and larger smoothly. How can I do that?
Thanks and best regards
Alex

Hi Alex
Assuming you have Captivate 2, you click Insert > Zoom
Area... to get the zoom area into the movie. Then you position and
size the zoom area over what you want a close up of and position
and size the zoom destination area as desired. Beyond that, you
simply play with timing and position to achieve the desired
effects.
Cheers... Rick

• Captivate 3 - zoom - transition - resize

Can I make an selection in an slide and make an zoom-in
function of for instance an button or some part of the scene ?
Can I make transition effect between my slides ?
If I record on full screen (1024 x 768 ) can I resize the
whole project to 800 x 640 ?ot other size

Hi steenmikkelsen
For transitions, it will depend on your Captivate version.
Versions 1 and 2 had a few. Maybe 3 or 4. Captivate 3 has 10. If
you wish to see them all in action, I've got a download up on the
Captivate Exchange that will show them to you. You may visit the
Exchange by
clicking
here. My gizmo is called "Captivate Transition Chooser".
For the zooming effect, there is a Zoom Area tool that
appeared in version 2. So you will need to have version 2 or 3 to
have it available. Basically, you click Iinsert > Zoom area and
get two objects on your slide. One is the zoom area and one is the
zoom destination. Position the zoom area over the area you wish to
magnify. Place and size the zoom destination where you wish to
display what you are "zooming up". The difference in size between
these two areas controls the magnification level. The larger the
difference, the more magnified the area becomes. There is also an
option for displaying an image as the zoom destination. So, you
might have an image of the area at full size, then a smaller image
on the slide where you simply wish to zoom up and show the larger
area in a much clearer manner.
You can scale a project down from a larger resolution to a
smaller one, but keep in mind that at the end of the day when all
is said and done, Captivate projects use bitmapped images. Any
scaling down will result in a loss of quality. This is because you
are taking bitmaps and pushing the picture elements (pixels)
together. Things look "fuzzy" and no longer as clear as they
originally did. So it's a trade off. To do this, click Project >
Resize Project...
Cheers... Rick

• Zoom and pan in Captivate 5.5

Gentlefolk;
I have just upgraded from Captivate 4 to 5.5. I want to do a simple pan and zoom to emphasize a bullet point on a PowerPoint background.
It is not obvious to me how to do a pan and zoom now. The process appears to include two elements, a "source" and a "destination", but all I want is to pan/zoom to a bullet point. It appears this function has disappeared in which I can select a pan/zoom area?
Alternately, if I could apply a function in which the entire slide is darkened except for an area which would retain the original lightness -- think SnagIt Spotlight and Magnify feature, that would work also. I don't see anything comparable in 5.5.
Suggestions?
Many thanks.

OK, here the work flow:
1. Insert the zoom object :
2. Place the source area and the destination area (you can also at the same time resize the last one, drag the corner):
3. Configure the properties of the source area, still selected in previous image (more possibilities than in CP4). In this screen shot I choose a transparent (20% alpha) color to fill the outer area, choose a transition with timing, the time of zoom/pan. You see also the X/Y coordinates of the source area (left top point of the bounding box), its width and height
4. If you didn't resize by dragging in the second step, select the destination area, and change the size; if you keep the Constrain proportions checked, you only have to resize width or height
What I explaiined about inserting a better image for the destination area was also already there in CP4, you'll find it here in the Fill&Stroke accordion of the Properties of the Destination area.
Lilybiri
PS: really think I can do this quicker in CP5.5 than in CP4
