Zooming in iPhoto 08

How do you zoom to the pixel level in iPhoto 08 like I was able to in iPhoto 06? When retouching a photo I cannot zoom in far enough.

indida:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Control-click on the thumbnail and select "Edit in separate window". There you can enlarge the image up to 200% in incremental steps.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Zoom in  iphoto retina mac is 1/2 of zoom on non retina display .WHY?

When comparing Mac Book Pro and Mac Book Pro with retina display I noticed that the zoom in Iphoto is only 1/2 in retina Mac versus non retina Mac.
    Any idea why?

  • Edited photos shown zoomed in iPhoto 11

Using iPhoto 11, when I edit a photo (using Photoshop as the designated external editor), then save the photo back in iPhoto, the photo displays zoomed way in on iPhoto...even though the iPhoto zoom slider is set all the way out. If you mess with the slider, the photo will display normally for a second, but then jump back to zoomed in mode when you release the slider.
So the edited photo shows like this in iPhoto:
When the actual image looks like this (when holding down the slider):

I noticed the issue while "cleaning up" my photo library this morning... the problem photos were all in an event from December 2011. I'm always running the latest available OS (10.9.1) & iPhoto (9.5.1) version, but can't recall what versions that would have been in Decemebr 2011 when imported & editted the photos. Both the OS & iPhoto have been updated since then. I have seen this occur intermitetdly over the years- as earlier poster showed, the image seems to "snap" to a zoomed in view of the Bottom Left corner (only thumbnail displays correct). The camera that was used had been a Canon Powershot SD800 iS... editting (appeared to be red-eye fix on them) would have been done using iPhoto or Photoshop Elements... of course, several (=hundreds) of photos around this time would have been imported/editted in the same manner, yet problems usually occur within a particular event.
Sorry, not much help I know.  Just trying to share what I can in the event that others are having more widespread issues, and this helps.

  • Double tap zoom in iPhoto doesn't seem to work now??

Used to be able to double tap zoom on my trackpad in iphoto.  Not anymore.  Have read other comments about this, any feedback?  Thanks.

I don't really  understand what the first part of your query is about. However: with respect to your query about uploading:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Reverting to iPhoto '09?

Anyone know the smoothest way to go back to '09?
    TimeMachine back-up?
There are just too many bugs and too many missing features in '11.
It really is next to useless.
I hope these are short term problems & that Apple will bring it back to being a useful (and useable ap') if not '11 marks the death of a otherwise great ap' that had until now been evolving well.
Seems they have concentrated too much on the 'cute' factor & forgotten that people do actually need iPhoto to do stuff.

    Sparkstack wrote:
Please expand on what features you have noticed are missing, and what is dumbed down
I would be the first to agree that there are dramatic improvements but they have come at too great a price.
Full-screen is great & the new editing tools buttons are too but there are just way too many bugs and poor changes.
Many of the changes are what I would describe as form over function - i.e. - look great but don't work as efficiently.
    *Missing -*
*There is no longer a zoom slider when viewing an individual image.*
When you combine this with the bug that stops the keyboard shortcut from zooming it means you have a serious ommission. In my case this inability to zoom renders iPhoto useless until fixed.
*The right-click menu has had most of its useful options removed.*
Those options are now up in the menu bar or are keyboard shortcuts, a step backwards from a productivity perspective.
*Merge and split buttons are gone.*
I don't think this needs any further explanation.
    *Dumbed down/dumb changes -*
*No option to export images to anything other than Apples 'share' choices when in full-screen view.*
This means you can't export to desktop or a thumb-drive or an external disc without backing out of fullscreen. That's just dumb when they are pushing the full-screen feature.
From a productivity perspective this makes full-screen less useful which is a shame as the full-screen improvements are otherwise fantastic. It's an odd omission or oversight in my view.
*Editing tools are now fixed in place, not floating.*
When you have a lot of editing to do on a wider screen (27") it is difficult to make tiny incremental adjustments to a slider on the far right of the screen while you watch the changes in the centre of the screen.
    *Right-click menu* (see missing)
*Keywords are now over in the far right panel.*
Sorry, that is just seriously dumb.
You need them under your images or at least there in a way that can be revealed. It means that to see a keyword you have to highlight/select the individual image and then look to the extreme right to find its keywords. No longer can you just look at an entire event and see all of the images to which you have applied keywords or the RAWs in with the JPEGs. You have to hunt them all out one-by-one.
I know it looks nice and neat and cool to have them in that panel but again not very useful.
    *Bugs -*
    *Zoom keyboard shortcut not working.*
I don't think this needs any further explanation.
*View/compare more than one image at once not working* (so you can't open two or more images at a time to compare).
    This seems variable.
For me it didn't work using the standard shortcut of holding command, selecting images & double-clicking to open (or any other way I tried).
These two bugs alone make iPhoto useless for me until they are fixed.
    And a couple of minor things that really would have been nice to have seen;
When you turn things 'off' they should be OFF.
For example in full-screen Locations still shows as a panel when it's turned off. I would imagine that it is quite logical to think that if someone wants something off they don't want or need to see it.
Faces - there really should be an option to switch Faces off.
On our family machine we use it all the time & it is great.
On my home-office machine I don't need or want it but when I load images it runs & runs & runs slowing the machine down doing something I don't want or need.
Would it be so hard to have it as something you can turn off?
These are my 'only' issues with '11.
I didn't find any more as I have now gone back to '09.
Two of these issues are 'mission critical' to me and rendered iPhoto '11 useless.
Others decreased its usefulness and were steps backwards from a productivity perspective.
    Just my observations & opinions.

  • Slow performance in iPhoto - library is huge

    Hello,
I have a huge number of pix in iPhoto (approx 11k) that I have accumulated of my kids over the last three years. The library is about 9.4 GB.
When I open iPhoto, it imports all the pictures every time. I really cannot have any other application open or everything crawls. Even if I just have iPhoto open, the performance is extraordinarily slow. I have about 12 GB of open memory on my hard drive. I moved the iPhoto library to an external drive, but that didnt seem to help the performance issue.
    My questions are these:
    1) Can I change a setting to have iPhoto only display / bring into memory the last 100 (or 1000) pictures instead of loading all pix every time?
    2) Are there any other settings that would reduce the amount of memory it is using to load the pictures every time?
    3) Is there something else that I can do to improve speed or performance?
I do run maintenance applications like Onyx occasionally, but it doesnt seem to have much of an impact on iPhoto performance.
    Thanks for any help.
    - Bob Mallon

We'll probably have other suggestions after you've answered Terence's questions, but for the moment:
    1) No, not in iPhoto 4.x or earlier.
    2) No. But you can make it operate faster by reducing the size of your thumbnails in Organize view, if they are now large or largish. At a certain size, which depends on your monitor resolution as well as on how you've set iPhoto's zoom slider, iPhoto switches from using the small thumbnail files that it generates internally to loading the whole original image in order to display a bigger thumbnail of it. That slows things way down. Make your thumbnail images as small as you can stand. On most monitors, at least four thumbnails across the window, and more on many monitors, is necessary to assure that only thumbnail files are loaded at startup. Experiment.
    3) Dividing a huge library into several smaller libraries is far and away the best speedup option in iPhoto 4.x and earlier. Unfortunately iPhoto doesn't provide a way to do so while retaining all the original metadata for each picture. You have to export all the images you want to place in a new library, then import them into a newly-created library. You can then designate the library you wish to open each time you launch iPhoto, by holding down the Option key while you launch it.

  • How do I save a photo after I have zoomed in on it?  I want to save the zoom-in as a new photo and can't work out why this doesn't work the same way saving a cropped image, or adjusted image does.  Thank you.

How do I save an image after I have zoomed in on it?  I can't work out why I can't save a zoom-in the same way
I can save a cropped image or an adjusted image. Thanks, Lily A.

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.  Have realised that Zoom in Iphoto is just  a viewing tool and not an editing tool.
Was creating beautiful abstractions by zooming in and wanted to create a new image of the result.   Have since discovered that cropping after zooming takes me a little way to where I want to go but it isn't the same effect.  Will perhaps have to try to create it when actually shooting.  Am doing a photoshop course in February and maybe will learn a bit more then, too.  Am pretty much an amateur just finding my way.
    Thanks again,
    Best, Lily

  • Finding metadata in iphoto

    Hi,
I'm trying to see the picture metadata (shutter speed, aperture, lens zoom) in iphoto. I have no problems getting to them in aperture 2 but all the information I can get from iphoto '09 is the type of file and the size. I'm trying to make a book in iphoto and would like to have that information printed by its photo. I've been trying to find some documentation that would give me some ideas of how I can do this, without having to switch back and forth between aperture and iphoto, but have not been successful. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time.
    Eli

Thanks, that was easy enough... I feel a little stupid for not being able to figure that on my own. Is there a way to have it shown automatically when a photo is selected?

  • IPhoto 11 9.4.2 and PSE 9.0.3 crops

I am using iPhoto 11 9.4.2 and PSE 9.0.3.  Whenever I crop an image in PSE and view in iPhoto, the image only shows a maximum zoom to the bottom left corner.  Is there any way to avoid this?  Very frustrating to have to go back and duplicate to view.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The thumbnails show just fine, but when I make them larger the actual photo appears for about a second, then goes right to the bottom left corner.
No matter how I slide the zoom in iPhoto, it still keeps going back to the zoomed corner.  This is on EVERY photo cropped in PSE.
    Thanks in advance!

Are you using PSE as described here?
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu.

  • Pins, Place Names and Zoon

Hi; When I zoom the iPhoto 09 Places Map into my home town, all the pins and place names are correct. When I zoom out, the pins combine and the place name changes to a city that is 400 km away. How may I change this incorrect city name to the name of my home town?
    Thanks,
    Bill

As far as I know no one has solved this yet - suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
This is brand new and I'm sure there will be many enhancements and changes over the next year

  • I have photos in iphoto that can only be view in minimum zoom but, when I zoom out pics can not be view when clicked on

When i open iphoto and the zoom is near the minimum, I can see all the photos, but when I move it towards the maximum range, the pictures disappear.  If I click on them I only see a blank, black screen.
    Someone help???

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Iphoto 11 slideshow "preparing" photos renders them perpetually zoomed in

I cropped several photos in PSE, and then saved them back to my iphoto 11 library.  I then selected them to be shown in a slideshow.  I was asked by a popup if i wanted to "prepare" the photos so that they could be viewed fullscreen in the slideshow.  This worked, but since then, when I doulble click on any of those photos in the events interface to view it fullscreen, it zooms in several 100's of %.  I can only see the photo as it was originally displayed by holding a click on the zoom slider, with the knob all the way to the left.  Any advice as to how I can revert these photos so that they can be viewed normally?  Many thanks in advance.

I found that duplicating a photo "solves" the problem - the duplicate will not be "zoomed" in when viewing it.  So, I duplicated all 78 photos, and deleted the originals.  A workaround at best, but at least the photos can now be viewed normally.....
