Zooming in on part of a video clip

I'm new to iMovie and don't even know if what I want to do is possible, but i've done a few searches and come up empty, so here goes:
I'm working with a video clip of my dog playing that is about 45 seconds long. In one part of the clip she runs away from the camera, and does a funny jump. I want to zoom in on her when she jump, which is lasts 5 seconds (not the jump itself, just the lead up and landing :P).
I know that I would lose some resolution in doing this, and I'm OK with that. it's not too much zoom, maybe 25% of the original frame would be lost. Is this possible in iMovie '11?
Thanks,
psymn

Split the clip on the section you want to zoom in on. Click on the gear popup on the clip and select crop & rotation. Drag the edges to the section you want to zoom into. Click Done.

  • Rotating only part of a video clip

    Hi,
I changed the position of my camera while filming a video clip. Can I now rotate only part of that clip in iMovie, so that all the frames are the same?
    Thank you.

You can do this using TransformMovie, available here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21859
Also, MPEG Streamclip can rotate video while maintaining the aspect ratio as well as the interlacing when converting to DV, which is what iMovie prefers as an input:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
There is also a plug-in for iMovie from GeeThree called rotate/scale that might do the job:
    http://geethree.com/slick/index.html
You will have to export the clip in question first, then re-import after correction.

  • Trouble exporting/sharing part of the video

    I do:
    create a new iMovie project,
select and copy part of a video clip from the Event Browser (e.g. 30 seconds -long piece out of 3 minutes -long video),
paste that piece into the created project,
Share --> Export Movie, or Share --> YouTube (or whatever).
    The problem:
The whole original video is exported or published on YouTube instead of the small piece of it which I have selected and put into the project.
If I play the copied/pasted fragment inside the project, it has the duration which I need.
Also (that is likely an obvious consequence of the first problem), the audio/video edits I do on the selected video fragment in the project do not end up in the exported/published video.
It looks like iMovie simply takes the original video from the Event Browser and exports/publishes it, bypassing the project altogether.
Either I am doing something wrong, or this is a bug.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    update:
the problem with keeping various Adjustments and edits in the exported/shared video (e.g. clip trims, equalizer adjustments, etc.) may be an intermittent one.
I suspect, it is related to working with "iPhoto Videos".
if you have encountered the same problem as described above, please share your experience.

  • How do you move the point where an audio clip attaches to a video clip?

I'm talking about the little carrot that sticks from one clip to another to indicate the point where the cips are syncronized. How do you move their position? Thank you!
    Eric

    The manual says ...
Adjust the connection point of a connected clip
By default, connected clips and storylines are connected to the primary storyline at their first frame, but you can move the“connection point” of a connected clip or storyline. This is useful when you want to connect a specific frame or audiosample in the connected clip or storyline with a specific frame or audio sample in the primary storyline.
Hold down the Command and Option keys, and click the connected clip (or the gray border of the storyline) at thepoint where you want to position the connection point.
The connection point is moved to the point where you clicked.
For other things ... If you want to move the audio clip in relation to the video clip just click on it and drag it to the left or right.  This is when your audio clip is a separate clip from your video clip.  If you want to move the audio that is part of a video clip, you first have to select that clip then choose Clip/Break Apart Clip Items then do one of the things listed above.  Best wishes.

  • Zoom in to part of video

    Hi Guys,
Sorry to ask but I do not use FCE that much. I am working with a video of a CCTV footage and want to zoom in to part of the footage to see what is gong on in detail. except I have no idea how to do this! Is there a way you can either zoom into part of the video or have a box that contains the zoomed in part on the frame, if you see what I mean? There may be a filer that can be used I don't know.
    Many thanks.
    Mike

Double-click the clip to load it into the Viewer window then click on the Motion tab. At the point you want to start the zoom in, place a keyframe in the Scale and Center control sections. Now move the playhead to the point you want the zoom in to stop. Enter the amount of scale that you want (above 100%) and FCE will automatically add a new keyframe at that point. If you need to move the video within the frame, FCE will also add a new Center keyframe.
Note that any zoom in above 100% will degrade the quality of the image. Going more than 110% may be objectionable to viewers.

  • How do I zoom in on a certain part of a video?

I am new to premiere pro CS6 and I need to know how I can zoom in on a certain part of a video, by a certain part I don't mean zoom the whole video, just a part of it. For example if I have a BF4 clip and I want to have the main game play running but at the same time have that amount of ammo zoomed in on running in the same frame. How can I do this ?Just like in this picture I quickly edited in Photoshop. as you can see the ammo is much larger than the rest of the game.

Main video on video track 1.
Copy of main video on video track 2. Use the Motion Property in the Effects Panel to zoom in, apply the crop effect and adjust, then adjust its location over the main video using the Motion Property.  You can also adjust its transparency if so desired.

  • Zooming into video clip a la Ken Burns effect

Sorry for what may be a dumb question with an obvious answer, but I've not ever seen this come up in any FCP forum.
Does the "Ken Burns" effect also work on video clips? That is, if you have a one camera interview shot or tutorial, can you "zoom" in on the person as you might with a still photo? If I had a 2nd camera or some one to shoot for me, it would be less of an issue. But, just to have some movement occasionally instead of a static talking head would be nice. I suppose if overdone, focus and quaility issues would come into play.
    Thanks,
    Dave

The explanation isn't quite right. Scaling is a logrithmic animation. An image at 100% scale fills the screen; when the image is at 50% scale it's a quarter size of the screen. This is why when you scale an image up it seems to get slower and slower as it scales up, and vice versa. Position on the other hand is a linear animation . The difference in the two is the problem.
Tom, you have great experience of this, so I'm a little wary of criticising but are you sure? I see that when scaling an image its area does not vary linearly (technically it's quadratic, not logarithmic, I think) and this will produce the illusion of changing speed which you speak of. Nevertheless, any given point in the image will move with constant speed.
On the other hand, position is not implemented linearly in FCP X. I set up a simple animation to test this, and at the start and end of the movement, the image's Y-coordinate changes by 2 pixels per frame of animation, whereas at the mid-point it changes by 6 pixels per frame: three times as fast.

  • Zoom in on video clips???

anyone know of any plugins that allow zooming in on video clips?
sort of like the ken burns effect for still photos?
    thanks

    http://geethree.com/slick/index.html
They MIGHT have what you need. Too many to browse today. This is easily done in FCE or FCP. If it is a still shot you might try zooming in in iphoto and adding a disolve between the original and the blow up.

  • Part of in project entered video clip does not play.

Much to my surprise certain video clip parts entered in a project do not play at all.
Instead the same clips previous part gets frozen!!
I tried not to have any theme and it still happens.
Is this a known issue? IMovie 09

    Thanks, Old Toad,
I know what you are referencing. I just never go to that folder but that is where I do publish the site prior to uploading it onto the internet using the FTP.
And, it is when I have published the updated pags to the the Local Folder, the video plays perfectly well.
Soooo, it must be all about restricted bandwith that I am currently using with my domain web host ISP, which is a shared bandwidth. Economics affect me as a volunteer therefore cannot afford the higher speed which is not a shared bandwith.
To add to my demise, I have issues with signing on to YouTube through my Google account. Try to sort that one out is impossible. Tried for hours but all to no avail to get signed in. So I can't upload my videos which is too bad for my website.
Will chat further with my domain host and see what other options are available to me.

  • Why the video clip will automatically "zoom in"?

I do not make any changes on the video clip, but when I drag the video to the channel, the video is zoom in. However when I drag it to working panel( is it the name of it? the top left area... ), it look normal.
Why this is happen? How can I solve this problem?

    Harm, you crack me up!
For the OP, it sounds like the footage you have is too big for the size of project you set up in Premier. the two have to match.
The SOURCE MONITOR (top left) resizes itself to fit whatever footage you happen to be looking at. It always "fits".
The PROGRAM MONITOR (top right) show the footage exactly how it relates to the project size. If, for instance, you put SD footage into an HD project, the footage would seem to small for the frame.
    Hope this helps.

  • Easy way to do smooth motion pan and zoom on a video clip?

    Howdy..
As a recent convert from Vegas and Premiere Pro, I'm very happy with FCP6, with 1 issue: Easy moves on video clips.
It's very easy to setup a move with the motion filter, but the problem is that zooming with moving on the clip with 'ease-in' is problematic.
The scaling and motion seem to accelerate at different rates, making it very tough to achieve a smooth pan and zoom at the same time (either one by itself is easy).
I've tried using anchor points, but that's difficult when doing several moves on a clip.
Basically, is there ANY way (either native or via a plug-in) to set up simple pan+zooms on a video clip, with smoothness turned on without having the 'slingshot' effect that you get? I know I can mess around with the acceleration points, but this is tough to do with 100 of clips that need adjusting.
I'd appreciate any help you can offer..
    Thanks...
    Best,
    Ben

    Howdy...
Usually I set easy-in/out on the canvas window (for center) and then 'smooth' on the keyframes (for scale) in the motion window.
Can you actually set smoothing for center in the viewer? I think you can only set easy-in/out for center in the canvas. (could be wrong on this one).
I wish it worked like in Motion. Much easier and more intuitive, but one shouldn't have to jump to a different app just to do a simple pan and zoom...
    Any other ideas?

    Yes.
If you want to see the zoom, use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool and select the Ken Burns effect. You can set the starting and ending rectangle for your zoom.
If you want to go directly to the zoom, use the Rotate, Crop, KenBurns Tool and select Crop. Set the rectangle to be where you want the zoom.

  • Imovie 11: When moving clips from event to project, the top of the video clip is cut off.

I'm working with a new project. When I add clips from an event to the project window, the top of the video clip is cut off.  Quite a bit of it is cut off.  It happens on every clip.  The aspect ratio is correct and I've set the video to fit in frame.  How can I fix this?  I would really appreciate any help.

You may have stabilization turned on in the project. On one of the clips, click on the small gear icon at the start of the clip and select Clip Adjustments. In the Inspector that opens, uncheck the box "Smooth Clip Motion" against Stabilization. If this fixes it for you, do the same for the other clips.
Also, it's a good idea to turn off certain preferences in iMovie>Preferences (an iMovie menu item). In the Browser tab uncheck the boxes for both "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed" and "Apply rolling shutter correction for clips that have been analyzed". See this picture:
The stabilization process causes a zoomed in effect on the video, as it has to "average" the pixels in order to smooth any shaky motion. You therefore lose a certain amount of the picture, depending on the extent of stabilization applied. Here's what iMovie Help states (in part) about this process:
"iMovie stabilizes video by analyzing the camera motion in the video and then moving the picture the opposite way to steady it onscreen. In this process, iMovie zooms in on the picture slightly. The amount of unstable motion in the clip determines how much zooming is necessary.
Zooming in crops out some of the picture, but you can fine-tune the level of stabilization to strike the right balance between keeping the video steady and retaining as much of the picture as possible."

  • Assembling still photos and video clips into one video presentation.

This is partly a Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements (both version 7) question, so hopefully not posting to the wrong group (there doesn't seem to be a Premiere Elements forum anyway)!
I am currently putting together a video/slideshow presentation, initially for display directly from a computer (to data projector) and then ultimately to end up on a DVD.  The presentation  consists of digital and scanned photographs (prints and transparencies) and video clips.  I successfully put together a slideshow of all the stills with Photoshop Elements, inlcuding music etc.  I then output the slideshow to Premiere Elements, so that I could merge it with my already edited video clips.
The output process works smoothly enough, but as soon as I run the completed presentation, the quality of the imported slideshow is nothing short of woeful!  Each image is badly pixellated and all the transition effects are mangled - in short, it is unwatchable.  As it turns out, simply adding a single, still image to Premiere Elements results in a very poor final image.  Drop the exact same video clips and still images into Windows Movie Maker and the quality is spot on (as is playing the slideshow after outputting it as a WMV file and playing via any player capable of playing WMVs).
Trying to go the other way, ie importing video clips into Photoshop Elements, pretty much always results in it crashing!
The two products are marketed to "work together", but they are an abject failure in this regard!
OS is 64 bit Vista Ultimate.
I've tried searching the manuals and online help, but could find nothing of any help.  I've sent an e-mail to Adobe support, but have received no response from them (after three weeks).
I'm hoping that someone may be able to point out something that I may have missed, or offer some tips and tricks.
    Thanks.

There is a separate forum for Premiere Elements at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premiere_elements
Also, my favorite place for Premiere Elements questions (including slideshows) is a site started by some Adobe Premiere Elements forum regulars at http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/index.php   Forum signup is free. There are multiple subforums at that site and because most of your questions are Premiere elements, I suggest that you post under the "PE version 7" subforum.
Wherever you decide to post, I suggest that you include in your post my comments and the answers to the questions that I asked here.
1 -- It has FAQs over to the right of the thread listing on the Adobe Premiere Elements forum. One of those FAQs that is relevant to your current workflow is
What resolution should my photos be in Premiere Elements?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/431851?tstart=0
2 -- Also, I suspect that you used Pan and/or Zoom on some of your photos when creating the Slide Show withinn Photoshop Elements.
For those photos, you want the Premiere Elements setting of Scale to Framesize set OFF.
3- There are also other considerations such as
-- which Project Setting you are using in Premiere Elements?
-- what dimensions are you using when you export from Premiere Elements to the WMV file?
-- what is the resolution for the projector on which this video will initially be displayed?
4 -- I do agree with your approach of adding the video in Premiere Elements.
5 -- The mangled transitions needs more detailed info in order to discuss.
Tthe timing of transitions is definitely different between the Photoshop Elements slideshow editor playback and the Premiere Elements output: this gives some people serious problems and for others it is not significant.  I don't know yet if that is your problem.

  • IPhoto video clips does not work in iMovie

I just installed Leopard and ilife '08 into my MAC.
The video clips from my iPhoto library are not shown properly in iMovie. I'm only able to hear the sound of the clip but unable to watch it. when i skim through the clip, i don't see anything on the viewer, i just hear skimming through the sound. when i tried to play the clip, just the sound began to play. even the thumbnail does not show a picture of the clip, its just grey.
    Can someone help me please???

Format: Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Mono, 44.100 kHz
As post in your other topic, this looks like it should be compatible.
I've captured video from my built-in isight camera in my MacBook. when i was trying to skim through or play the video clip in iMovie, the clip didn't appear in the side viewer. I am able to hear the voice of the clip and even see the thumbnail clearly but not in the viewer.
This sounds like part of your original problem. Suggest you try importing the same files to an alternative platform and/or possibly an alternative user account to see if the problem is "global" on your system and "limited" to your system only. Suspect you may have a bad install or corrupted application that may simply be generating unusable "thumbnails" here. You basically need to isolate the problem to see if it is in OS and/or application. For instance, did you update to iMovie v7.1 before or after installing Leopard or better yet, have you installed all of the updates?
