Zooming on a MBP?

Hello,
is there any way to zoom via the keyboard while using Photoshop for instance?
the shortcut is command-+ but I don't have direct access to the + since I'm on a European keyboard and need to press shift-1 to get a +.
any help would be really appreciated!

I'm not sure if it's the same - but command = zooms in and command - zooms out on this keyboard (i.e. no need for shift at all)

  • Another 7.2.3 vs. OS 10.4.9 story

Just another story to add to the numerous problems people have posted here about using Logic 7.2.x with Mac OS 10.4.9.
I'm trying to score a video. Upon import, the video (and accompanying audio) play fine. However, when I record a track (audio, MIDI, or VI) it hangs the program. I force quit to escape.
After reading many posts here, I tried the following steps (with no success)
    - changed the video from QuickTime movie to DV stream
    - played the video from a different HD than the main system drive
    - downloaded/instlled combo update of 10.4.9 (instead of software update)
    - repaired permissions using Disk Utility
    - downloaded onyX - ran cache cleaning and misc. repairs
I'm going to install 10.4.8 on an external drive I have connected to the ExpressCard 34 slot (FireWire 800 - zoom zoom) of my MBP. Hopefully, using that as the boot drive I can make Logic happy again - at least until a bug fix is posted by Apple (Don't forget about us pro musicians, Mr. Jobs.)

With all due respect. before you declaer a problem to be a bug: a bug is something that happens to (almost) everyone due to a flaw in the software. i.e. On Mac Intels if you go into the Tempo List and try to enter a SMPTE number it goes wacky. That will happen to EVERYONE. That therefore is a bug.
I am running 7.2.3 with 10.4.9 and I cannot reproduce your problem. This leads me to believe that it is not a bug but a system specific problem.
If I were given a dollar for every so-called bug that has occurred over the years and has turned out to be system specific I would be a wealthy man.

  • New MBP - Pinch (Zoom in and out) not working in iPhoto

Hello...I know it should work as it was working on the demo MBP in the apple store. Pinching is working in Preview and safari but not on desktop for icons and iPhoto.
    Please , please help

I've also noticed that the iPhoto zoom is erratic. Sometimes I try to use the trackpad to zoom, but the image just blurs for a second instead of zooming in.
I experimented a little and found that it helps, when zooming in, to make sure that your two fingers are very close together when starting.

  • MBP Retina or Powerful Ultrabook?

Hi, I've been a PC user all my life, but after working my way through the first iPod Nano, a couple iPod Touches, and now an iPad 2- I've grown to like the way Apple works. I'm finally at the point where I've decided to upgrade my 4-year old Future Shop sale Toshiba, which surprisingly has lasted me a good deal of time. However, I'm not a fan of the limited capabilities, the weight, and the fact that it very easily overheats (to nearly scalding temperatures), leading me to opt for my iPad most of the time. I'm a sucker for HD and quick boot-ups, so of course I fell in love with the MBP Retina when it was released. The only thing holding me back is the hefty price tag. Because of this, I began to research several ultrabooks and found that I could get the same specs (except for retina, but I'm fine with 1080p) and even a few bonus features (I would love a Blu-Ray drive and some accident-proof features) for half, or slightly-more-than-half of the price of the MBP. My favourite features of the MBP are the "little things"- fast bootup, magsafe, trackpad, and iCloud to work seamlessly with my iPad (which, i guess isn't really a "little thing"). I'm just not sure if these are worth the extra $1000 when I could just get an amazing PC.
I plan to use this computer in the following ways:
    - Web browsing/ social networking
    - Homework (university... of course)
    - Entertainment (play movies, TV shows, etc)
    - Some video and picture editing (I have a Sony camera which records AVCHD, which edits best on Sony Vegas)
    - Running language software (i.e. Rosetta Stone)
So anyway, I'm not a gamer or a hardcore video editor, but I would like to be able to do some editing and video playback with clarity and without lag. As such, I figure I really only need the i5, so the base model of the Retina is fine for me. But again, I could get a **** good computer with i5 for much less money than the Retina, so I'm looking for reasons to sway either way. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    tj

    Hmm...
'll readily admit, I'm a bit of an Apple head, so always say YEAH GO FOR IT.
    However,
I'd say be aware, if you aren't going to use the power, you may be better going for alternatives, but I'll give you a rundown of some pro's and cons for your usage.
    - Cold boots in 15 seconds flat
    - can play 4 1080p streams at once without lag or framerate drop
    - Photo editing on Aperture is excellent
    - Photostream means your photos are there almost instantly wirelessly (not with the camera of course)
    - Photoshop CS6 (when the retina patch is out) will look brilliant
    - I had a photo zoomed out to fill half the screen size, of a whole person, yet could still see individual hairs on the head.
    - Build, engineering, design and material quality unsurpassed in the industry (you cannot flex anywhere or make anything creak)
    - Logevity, just upgraded from a 2008 Air - which was still going strong with no visible wear or damage/scratches
-Power, good graphics chip, switchable for battery life
    - Video editing is amazing (on Final Cut Pro - which is Retina ready) you can veiw full 1080p with the interface still visible
    Cons:
    - Lag - on 'best for retina' its great, on 'More space' scaling, if you allow GFX chip switching, will cause serious lag - forcing the GeForce fixes this
    - Other laptops will be great for your needs, and cheaper, but may not last as long
    - The next generation in a year will likely iron out the lag issues
    - Most programs are not yet retina ready - meaning they look... well... very dodgy indeed
I would say the MacBook is a fantastic machine and you will not regret the purchase, it will last you a good 3-5 years and you will thoughoughly enjoy it.  It's an absolute joy to you and the trackpad and keyboard are brilliant.  The speakers are also great.
However, you will likely get a notebook more than good enough for your needs, as you said, for much less money.  If you can happily afford it - get the Mac, they are some of the finest computers money can buy.  If it's a stretch - get a **** good alternative, you'll enjoy it equally and get great performance and some extra money in the old pocket!
Hope this helped a bit anyway - if you have any questions, ask away, more than happy to help

  • Problem with zoom in Photoshop CS6

    Hello
I've got problem with new(?) feature in Photoshop CS6.
When I'm working on my project and have for example 150% zoom and I want to move workspace with SPACE+LMB.
In my previous version (CS3) I can do this without problem but know Photoshop shows me my file with FIT TO SCREEN zoom and some frame to choose
which screen area I want to zoom in.
It's just zooming out to full view of file. I hate this, but I can't turn it off.

I was just being sarcastic. I knew it is a feature while searching for a way to fix the issue awhile back. I am very interested in knowing if any user out there could somehow fix the problem by reseting, reinstalling, etc. I got an update a few hours ago, and that didnt fix it either.
I have tried a lot of suggestions, and the only one seems to be working for me is to turn on "Scrubby Zoom"
    Noel,
I run Adobe CS5 on MBP 10.6 and CS6 on MBPr 10.8. No additional plugins, English US keyboard. The laptops come with standard configuration... nonetheless, they both have the same issue.
I am sure my computers have different settings from others, but this issue does not seem to be isolate as there are other users have experience it too.
I personally, don't think it is too hard to re-create.  Most likely happen when
    1. Hold down space+command to zoom in
    2. Release keys, then hold down space and start moving around
    3. there you go, "bird's eye view" comes
One thing I notice is that the problem does not occur all the time.

  • Yosemite on 13" MBP(Mid 2012) running super slow on standard configuration. Is there a rock solid way that I can make it fast? or Yosemite is designed to work only on PCIe SSDs with 16GB RAM? Missing Steve Jobs :(

My 13" MBP MD 101 / A1278 / 9,2 / Mid 2012 is still in production and it is performing like a windows pc; super slow after updating it to Yosemite.I can't afford to upgrade its HDD to SSD and 4GB RAM to 16GB.
Tried everything found on internet, nothing got successful in making it fast as it was once with mountain lion. I hope I could have Yosemite's features and leopard's responsiveness and stability.
I think Apple guys have designed Yosemite only for SSDs only. They should design OS X according to every mac's different hardware, like if I have a spinning old hard drive it should mould itself to the capabilities of it and not demand responsiveness of an SSD.
Please do let me know if anyone have brilliant new idea other than found on the internet.

My MBP acting like a windows pc; running really very slow after Yosemite update

  • Pinch to zoom not working properly in Safari 5.1

I have OS X 10.6.8 (downloading lion as i type). I updated safari this morning and ever since I did that, pinch to zoom isnt working right. I can pinch to zoom in, to a certain extent but I can not get as large as I want as I used to and I cannot zoom back out at all. It seems to be working properly in my other apps so I guess it's something in safari. I'm not very Mac savvy since everything usually works and I dont have to be, so maybe I'm missing something? Help! I use this feature CONSTANTLY and desperately want it back. Thanks in advance!

    Same here.
MBP Late 2007 with Magic Trackpad
    OSX 10.6.8
    Safari 5.1  (6534.50)
I could zoom in once and then it wouldn't work anymore by using the pinching on the Magic Trackpad.
Pressing Command and +/- still worked.
I deleted Safari 5.1 and reinstalled the Combo Update to get 5.0.5 back and it worked properly again.
Then I installed 5.1 another time and had the same error again.
I guess I got to roll back to 5.0.5

  • Mac OS X Update 10.5.6 Messed up my MBP. help!

Hello everyone, I'm a new mac user as of November of 2008. I absolutely love my mbp! I have not had any complaints or problems with my Macbook pro until december 27 and now. Ever since I downloaded the automatic software update, i noticed a change in my mbp. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing these same problems. Here is a list.
    1. First of all, the update changed my pinch to zoom settings, so i had to go into the finder preferences to change it back. This was not a big deal
    2. The Battery options on the finder bar at the top right of the screen were change. I no longer have the option to change my settings as easily from "Better Performance", "Normal", or "Better Energy Savings". Now I have to click into "Energy Saver Preferences" and change it through there. again this is not such a big deal because I can still toggle through those settings but it is less convenient now.
    3. Something is seriously not right with my Battery or my macbook pro for that matter. It takes a long long time to recharge the battery. In fact, I can run my macbook pro on it's battery for about 3 minutes then plug it back in and from 97% it take 25 minutes to recharge. This did not happen before the software update. Also, yesterday January 1, 2008 the battery would not charge at all. The AC adapter was orange for a long time and the battery itself was blinking and warm for a long time.
I downloaded the widget istat pro to check out all my settings and my battery settings read:
    Health:98%
    Cycles:8
    Charge:100%
    0:09 Time Remaining
Any idea's as to what might be wrong? I have not modified or done anything to my mbp besides download Trial version of aperture, adobe photoshop cs4, and lightroom 2.0. I take good care of my mbp, in fact i baby it! Is anyone having the same problem as me after the software update?
Should i take it to an Apple Store to check the battery? If so, what else should i have them check? All help would be greatly appreciated...thank you

Energy saver Preferences is where you should chage the graphics settings.

usually after 85% or so it will trickle charge the battery instead of a full on charge. (helps with battery life.) As for the battery not taking a charge i would look at the links posted above. Blinking? where was the battery blinking - on the side or on the screen itself?

the time remaining does not look good - try the SMC reset and possible a PRAM flash (to flash the PRAM - while computer is off press and hold option, command, r, p then press the power button 1 time. Keep holding all four buttons till you hear the start up sound 2 times.) hopefully it works for you good luck!

  • MBP Retina inconsistent UI graphics / battery life

I apologize in advance for the 1,000,000th thread on this topic.  I (like so many others) have noticed very inconsistent smooth/choppy graphics performance with basic UI functions of OS X 10.8.2.  I have tried a number of user suggetsions to alleviate this problem including turning off dynamic switching.  That seems to have only a minor improvement, and kills battery life.  I'm assuming that OS X (like windows machines) scales the CPU on a notebook to improve battery life.  What I have noticed, is that if you have processor intense applications running/loading, the graphics lag (ie - dock zoom) improves dramatically.  Has anybody else noticed this?  This would at least suggest that the current retina MBP hardware components are more than capable of producing a smooth UI experience, in contrast to what other reveiw forums have suggested.  Is there a way to modify CPU throttling at least when the device is plugged in?  This whole issue is not a deal-breaker for me, but it's not what I've come to expect from Apple.

Update, for some reason puting the dock on the left or right side of the screen DRAMATICALLY improves performance of both dock magnification and the genie effect.  This may be a software issue.

  • Connecting MBP with VGA to 32" LCD HDTV?

    What's up everyone,
I'm looking at buying the new 15" Macbook Pro and connecting it to my Westinghouse 32" LCD HDTV. My TV does NOT have DVI input, but does have VGA and HDMI. Has the issue with connecting these bad boys been resolved yet? Has anyone successfully connected a Westinghouse HDTV to a MBP using VGA or HDMI? Please let me know, as I don't want to waste money on the new MBP if it isn't able to connect with my large external display (without problems).
    Thanks,
    Zac

Hi. I wanted your help on choosing the best settings for my external display. I currently have it out to HDMI on my 37" LCD Toshiba.
I tried to display without "mirroring" but if i dont the display on my tv is too large - very simlar to a zoomed in look. When i mirror the screen i can not see the top bar.
Video looks great on the screen.
I want my tv to display similar to a computer monitor!
    Many thanks,
    Tim

  • I finally made the change to a MBP from a Thinkpad. Now I'm lost.

Ok. So after 20 years of using a PC, I've converted to a MAC. I just purchased a top of the line MBP. I am trying to setup the Desktop like a PC (i.e. HDD, DVD, Networking, My Docs, etc....)but I can't figure it out. The only thing I got so far is a headache. Can someone please explain to me how I would put these icons on my Desktop? Also. I think I deleted a folder accidentally on the task bar. It was the download folder. I still have the Application and the Documents folder.
Can you also tell me how to scroll properly? It seems I have 3 options on my mouse pad (left click, middle click, and right click. On a PC, you would hold the left click down with your left hand and scroll with your right hand -- using a swiping down motion.
How do I stop the screen from zoming in and out all the time? It seems every time I move my single finger anywhere on the mouse pad, it either zooms or zooms out.
    Thank you for your help.
    Signed Frustrated Newbee

I am trying to setup the Desktop like a PC (i.e. HDD, DVD, Networking, My Docs, etc....)
Unfortunately, the Mac is not really like a PC. Before you become too frustrated trying to make your Mac into a PC, let me explain how you get to these things on a Mac.
The HDD is obviously the Macintosh HD icon on your desktop. Double click that to get to the root level of your drive. This is like double-clicking on your C drive on a PC. Except everything is organized much better on a Mac. By opening that HD icon, you'll see your Applications, System, Library, and Users. The Applications folder is where your apps live. On a Mac, many of the applications are contained within a single "file", and those files are located in the Applications folder. You can drag any application's icon to the Dock (task bar) where it will stay for one-click access to that app.
The System folder is where all the OS components are located. There are very few reasons why any user should ever have to look in here so I won't bother to explain it. Library is where things such as preferences and settings are stored in files. You shouldn't have to look within the Library folder very often at all either. Think of the Library basically as where the system goes to find preferences and settings that you've already set. The Users folder is where all your data will primarily be stored. Each user of the computer has their own folder within the Users folder. Within that folder (Home folder, with a house for the currently active user), named for the short name of the account, all your documents, photos, music, movies, etc. are stored within their respective folders. This is also where you'll find the Downloads folder that you mistakenly removed from the Dock. You can just drag it back into the same location to recreate that shortcut. Dock icons are simply shortcuts to folders, files, and apps, not the actual files themselves.
Can you also tell me how to scroll properly?
Very simple. Click System Preferences in your Dock. That is where all your preferences are set and stored, unlike the confusing mess of "Control Panels" in Windows. Click Trackpad, and you will see settings for the trackpad. You can set the speed of various aspects of the trackpad, as well as set which gestures you'd like to use with the computer.
I suggest you try to forget about the clunky "left click down with your left and and scroll with your right hand" PC way of scrolling. In that trackpad area of System Preferences, just make sure that you click the "Scroll" box under two finger gestures. Then, in a scrollable window (such as a web browser) just place two fingers on the trackpad and move them up or down to scroll. There are great videos in the trackpad preferences area that will show you all the gestures and how to use them. Similarly, you can shut off the screen zooming here. I suggest you go through all the System Preference tabs to set things to your liking.
If you need clarification or have further questions, just ask!

  • Digital camera and MBP

I just bought a new Canon Powershot S3 IS digital camera.
I haven't used it yet, just opened the box.
It comes with a CD, "Digital Camera Solutions" that they say
you need to install in order to be able to download pictures from camera to the computer.
My question is this: do I really need this program?
Or can iPhoto take care of downloading my pictures?
I don't really want to install something that I don't need.
    Thanks!

  • MBP LED display - yellowish?

I just bought a 15" MBP, and I am not happy with the quality of the LCD. The whole screen has a definite yellowish tinge, and the bottom 1/3 of the screen is the worst.
The difference is quite noticeable even when compared to my cheap Dell widescreen - the Dell has bright, crisp whites, and the MBP's whites are definitely yellowed. I have tried color calibration and adjusting the white point - that is not the problem.
Is everyone's display like this? So many people are gushing about them, I can't imagine that's the case.

I just came back from local Apple Center where I compared the new MBP 15.4" (LED) vs the new MBP 17" (same panel as previous model).
Same images on both, full images as well as zooming at actual pixels level.
The new LED screen seems to have slightly wider tonal range, clipping details in the highlights and shadows a tad later.
But it has way more artifacts, with much less smooth tonal gradation, for example in the sky or with subtle tonal variations.
The "shoulder" is smoother in the 17" screen, meaning that transition from detailed highlight to no-detail (pure white) is less abrupt, more photographic so to speak.
Colors are way too greenish, even if I guess they'd improve after monitor calibration.
When I read the specs of the MBP I thought to upgrade my MBP 17" by the time the LED would have been available on the 17".
But I was so unimpressed with the new LED panels that I'm actually thinking to upgrade my MBP 17" to the new model before they add LED backlit also to the 17"...

  • MBP 13, 10.6.8, desktop larger than monitor

About 4 or 5 days ago, my 13" MBP started something weird.  The desktop image doesn't fit on the monitor.  If I move the mouse to the edge of the screen, the image shifts in that direction.  e.g. if the menu bar is showing, then the dock is not until I move the mouse to the bottom edge.  It happens left/right also.  It happens on external monitors (several different ones) and the builtin LCD screen.  It was perfectly fine up until then.
The problem is very annoying, but doesn't make the computer unusable.  I've run SW Update and everything is current.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Paul Baughman

    Nearly, Jon;
Hold control and scroll backwards, or ⌥⌘8 to turn zoom off.
I think Jon is confusing it with colour reversal - ⌃⌥⌘8.
Both can also be turned off in System Preferences > Universal Access > seeing tab.
    I use both facilities daily.

  • SUDDEN BLACK SCREEN WHILE USING MBP. WHY?!

It has been happening lately... the screen all of a sudden turns black and it forces me to shut it down manually.
Using I-Photo for example, when I zoom in on a picture the screen turns black and there is nothing to do to get the computer back running other than shut it down pressing the power button. It also happened yesterday whilst watching a video on YouTube. It is crashing down too often lately:

I've tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, that didn't solve the problem. I also ran the Apple Hardware Test, and it said there were no damages on the Hardware...
    Any solution??

    ChMBP,
I and others have the same problem with iphoto and with both life 09 and life11 on my book in all accounts and safe mode didn't make any difference.

I followed these steps found in the link below but without resolution on my book,
    it has helped others
http://mbp-freeze.wikispaces.com/ ( thanks for the link Andyball)
    • I see you were on 10.6.6 (this is an old post) have you tried updating to 10.6.7 it has helped some (but not on my mbp)
    • you did try resetting the PRAM (steps found in the link for both the pram & Smc reset) & (SMC) didn't work for me either.
    • Run Disk permissions didn't help on mine did on others ( am I the only one to have the odd unfulfilled progress bar )
Did you try making a new partition with a fresh reinstall & the apple apps only)
I did but the issue persists and with 3 different cam photos.
Imo this is a graphic card/ logic board problem.
My HD was replaced 3 days ago, and the issue persits in both accounts
Apple has it now, I'll keep you posted on a possible resolution for my mbp, could differ on yours, meanwhile I hope you keep us posted, okay?
    Mia
