Zooming on Stills: does dpi matter, or just pixel dimensions?

Hi, I am going to be zooming in on Stills, and, as I understand it, before importing into FCE, I want to change my pixel dimensions in Photoshop to be at least doubel the usual size.I assume that is to avoid getting a fuzzy pixelated look when zoomed in. Would it also be important at the very beginning to scan the photos into Photoshop at 600 dpi vs 300 dpi, or is dpi simply unrelated to pixel dimensions?

Thanks for writing back. On page 198 in your book (which I love) you say 'scan at high resolution, likie 300 or 600 dpi." Does more dpi relate to how high the pixel resolution can be? I'm just not sure of the correlation. You reccommend a PICT file which is 1,494X1,098. Can this be created just as well from a 300 dpi scan as a 600 dpi scan?
A second question? Have you ever worked with the program called Photo to Movie? Can work done int that program be easily imported into a FCE project?

Two things to try to see if iphoto stops crashing.
1. From your preferences directory drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to your desktop and loaunch iphoto to see if it fixes your problem. I'm a little leary of doing this since all your iphoto preferences will be recreated from scratch. So if this experiment doesn't work replace the recreated one in Preferences with the old original one you dragged on to your desktop.
2. Boot in safe mode. Play with iphoto a little bit to see if it fails. Whether it fails or not reboot normally. Safe mode will suppress all third party additions, your login items, as well as doing a little bit of cleaning (e.g., some caches). So it will be interesting to know if iphoto runs in safe mode and then after rebooting normally.

Firefox4 cleared compnents.classes(cid) error, but Start page still does not load? just shows search bar that doesn't operate /load?

Loaded Firefox 4, received error message components.classes(cid), now corrected through help pages. But Firefox Start Page only shows a Search bar, that doesn't operate, page does not carry any other information, presume it's not downloading correctly, any ideas??

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Pixel dimensions for still images

Hello all,
I have just ran into a problem that seems to be a sizing problem with Final Cut Express HD. I used to crop my still pics to 1366 px - 768 px (for landscape) and then import them to FCE and export as a quicktime movie. When I brought the quicktime movie into iDVD and created the DVD it seemed to play great on my 46" Samsung tv -- full screen.
I just recently bought a Samsung 60" and when I create the same type of movies, I am getting a huge black border around the whole image (not just top and bottom but sides too). I tried creating a new movie and made all my still images 1920px x 1080 px, and it still comes out the same way.
I can stretch my tv so that they go full screen, but I think there should be a way to create the movie without having to stretch it....just have the tv set for 16:9, and I feel that it should work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

When you create a DVD, no matter what the pixel dimensions of your original material, it become 720x480 Standard Definition. This is what a DVD is. If you are creating a DVD that has material that is 16x9, then it creates a DVD that is 720x480 but plays back anamorphic, stretching to create the 16x9 screen.
If you play one of your older DVDs that played correctly on your previous TV, does it play correctly or does it also exhibit the black bars?
If it plays correctly then something has changed in the way you are creating your project in FCE.and encoding and burning the DVD.
If the older DVDs also exhibit the same playback problem, then I believe there is a menu setting on your new TV that will tell it how to display Standard Definition material from your DVD player, and you need to adjust that. (There are also settings in the set-top DVD player that tells it what kind of signal to send based on the what kind of display it is hooked up to.)

How do I change DPI in Photoshop CC without changing the pixel dimension of the file?

I used to be able to do this in Photoshop CS6 by simply clicking the check boxes in the "image size" dialog box:
scale styles
constrain proportions
resample image
(all boxes UNCHECKED)
Then input the dpi (usually converting a 300dpi print file to 72dpi for web). And the pixel dimension will stay the same.
In CC the only option I see is "scale styles" which does not apply to the pixel dimension of the file.
Please help. I would hate to have to do this function in CS6 all the time.

Just uncheck the [ ] Resample checkbox, then change your Resolution.
Change the units from Percent to Pixels if you want to see pixel dimensions.
Once you've successfully run it through (after OK), note that it will remember your units settings the next time you use it.

I have several hundred stills that that were scanned at 600dpi in jpeg format. I know that 72dpi would be the norm for images in video, but I intend to zoom in at least 200% on many of the stills. So just to be on the safe side, I scanned them all at 600dpi.
In terms of panning and zooming on stills in Premiere Pro, does it matter that the images were scanned as jpegs rather than tiffs or png files? Will that cause problems in Premiere Pro CC for playback or does the image format not matter? If so, would it be wiser to convert all the jpegs to png or tiff files prior to importing into Premiere Pro CC? I understand that they would have to be tiffs or png files to have transparency for compositing purposes. But I only plan to do Ken Burns style moves on the stills, no compositing.

DPI doesn't matter in video, look at the frame size of these images instead.

Yes, JPEG is a lossy compression format. TIFF, PSD, PNG are lossless compression and are a better choice for using for your purposes. However, do a test and see if the JPEGs might look OK so you don't waste time rescanning the images.

It should not matter much. The thing to be concerned about is the frame size. Using over 4000 pixels in either dimension is going to severely affect your performance. 3840 x 2160 (2x the HD frame size), I found, works well for most all landscaped oriented images. Try it and see if that works for you.

Convert? No, that would not help your images performance or quality. Try a test with a JPEGs and see if they work for you. Otherwise, rescan as TIFF, PSD, or PNG and resize the images to 2x the HD frame size.

I am somewhat reluctant to answer your questions after Frank Caggiano's excellent advice, but I really do not like to leave the question open, for there will be many occasions when you will need to export images and to understand how it works.
But please, follow Frank's advice, right now you do not need to worry about pixels and dpi. That is exactly what I meant, when I suggested to you to make sure you keep a copy of your Aperture Library and to back it up with all your other data, before you erase your disk for a clean reinstall.

Not if you export with the original size - the maximum number of pixels available. That will ensure the maximum print quality.
The dpi settings are required to export versions; versions are derived from the masters and new image files are computed. When you export masters you get a copy of the original file that already may have a dpi setting.

Here is another example, maybe that helps a little:
I exported an image (jpeg) with three different setting: export masters, a version with 72dpi, a version with 300dpi and inspected the files in Graphic Converter:
The master was exported like this:
Notice, the master had already dpi settings, although I did not specify any on export.
The size is 51,48 cm x 38,61 cm.
The 72 dpi Version has larger dimensions, but also 10 Megapixels.
and here the 300 dpi version: smaller dimensions, same amount of pixels.

If it fried the charger, then there is something seriously wrong with it. You need to take it to an Apple Store to have it looked at, and be prepared to be told that you will need to get a new phone. If you can't charge it, it will be useless to you in a matter of days anyway. Also, do not even try to hook it up to your computer....you will probably cause serious damage to the computer and be even worse off than you are now.
Sorry about your troubles. But for your own safety, you need to have the phone looked at! Don't wait - if you wait until it has no more charge left, then no one will be able to recharge it to look at it....

Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? Also, for the other people that may have similar problems and are viewing this forum, definitely try this out. Listen to Jim's advice, don't use the most recent version (which is currectly 5.5.47) - instead try a slightly older one. The one I had installed was version 5.5.24.

There are two ends to a wifi network. Try rebooting your router.

Make sure the silent switch is not set to mute. If you can see the red dot, it is on mute.
It may think you have headphones plugged in, try plugging and unplugging a wired headset a few time.
The next step would be to restore as new.
If none of that works, a warranty exchange would be the resolution.

To fix the freezing when sleeping problem go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer Sleep' to 'Never'. It seems there is a problem for some with Bluetooth failing to wake after sleep. This fixes it 100% for me and many others on here, until Apple issue a software update to address it.
Not sure what to suggest on the internet problem. I assume you are connected and receive and send emails OK.
Edit: To try to troubleshoot the internet issue maybe try turning the Firewall off: System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall tab.
