[ZT] Song Name sort

I think with the new firmware the sorting when you choose to open all songs for xx artistt
are sorted with the filename rather than the tag name.
Doesnt really bothor me just pointing it out.
Might be a repost and sorry if it is.

That's what I thought also, but when expanding the window, it still doesn't show. However on 2 older playlists, when I first got it, the name column shows, but not on the "master list" of all songs, and also not on new playlists.
When I connect my wifes IPOD, same one, it shows up on every playlist and the master. I have had this issue for about 2 years through different Itunes versions. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that when I first got the IPOD I used "music match" instead of Itunes? Or it could just be an issue with the IPOD. I've resisted doing a restore and wiping everything out as I've switched desktop computers and quite a few of those songs are not on my hard drive. I can work around it, but it's a hassle.
I just figured out how to make the song name show, but using the "sort name" field, but now I'm wondering if there is a way to copy the name to the sort name field in a mass conversion instead of doing it one by one.

  • Searching songs by sort name doesnt work in iOS6

I have many songs whose id3 tags are NOT written in Pinguin(english) script. To assist searching through such songs in itunes u can add sort name, sort artist etc. in these fields u can type english so that its easy to search such songs.
Since iOS6 i can not search such songs. But the songs are still sorted by the engllsh sort names
. Does anyone know y this change has been made?
Similar functionality in contacts still works fine. In contacts i am still able to search through phonetic first and last names.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks to both of you!
I looked back at why I thought I had to hold the button for lyrics, and it says something like "press the button until you see the lyrics," which I interpreted as "press and hold" rather than press repeatedly. Now it works!
I added album info for all of my songs, and now that works, too! I didn't think that was the problem, since it wasn't just the songs with incomplete info that were affected, but editing that info solved it! And thanks for the link; I've been reading up.
Anyone on the other two questions?

  • Can anyone explain me why iTunes is just changing song names an messing up the order?

I have different songs that I would like to upload onto the phone iOS 6.1.3
So I copy the songe into a playlist in iTunes.
    Song names are
    whatever_xx-001
    whatever_xx-002
    whatever_xx-020
what does iTunes? It just changes the song names and make a complete mess with the order of the songs:
    whatever xx 1
    whatever xx 20
    whatever xx 2
My question is, if iTunes is not usable for copying numbered songs? I cannot imagine that this tool is so stupid? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you for a hint.

Now I look more carefully at your list, I see what you mean.
iTunes does have a method for Artist sorting if the Sort fields are empty (as most of mine are), but offhand, I don't know much about it to be honest. The glaring issue in the your screenshot is Ministry Of Sound.
If any of the other experienced contributors add to this thread (note the number of points they have) with better advice than I can offer, take it.
In the meantime, start with the Ministry Of Sound and check the Sort Artist field. If you highlight everything by an artist, or a complete album, and select Get Info/Sorting, you see this view:
and if you select just a single song, it's this view:
I assume, unless you tell me otherwise, that the Ministry Of Sound entries will show something in there which is causing iTunes to put them in with the entries for A. Replace it with Ministry Of Sound. If the field is blank (which it will be if there are two different entries in your selection) simply type in Ministry Of Sound. Does that make any difference?
If it does, then check your other entries to see what is causing the issue with them.
You may find the the artist "Joey Bada$$" has been set to sort by Bada$$, Joey.
This screenshot of my Artists column may explain why B.o.B is before Baauer:
If you don't like it that way, change the entry in the Sort Artist field to suit you.

  • How changing the song name?

Is it possible to change the names of the song in itunes?
The reason I want to do this is not because I am trying claim that the songs are by me. I just wana put "A","B","C"... in front of their names so they can be sorted the way I want

Click/Select/Highlight the song in iTunes. Then click the song name again. The name should become editable.
    Compared to...
Also, you can single click on the song, wait a second or two, then single click on the inofrmation you want to change. It is like a delayed double click.
You worded it better than me. I'm never quite sure how to explain that, but I like "delayed double click."

  • Song name won't display in grid view

I have long had a problem whereby the song-name column was missing when viewing a single album from the grid view. There is an archived, unanswered question on the very same question here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1818126
I have never as yet found a conclusive answer to this problem, and I've watched several new versions of the software come and go with no fix.
Well, for the benefit of those still suffering that problem, I'm here to tell you today that I have a conclusive fix!
For those impatient among you, just do this: http://bit.ly/gf8P0m.
For everyone else, let me tell you unequivocally that it's NOT (directly) a problem with the software. It basically seems to be down to library corruption of some sort. I know it sounds strange that an entire column could go missing due to data, but I have proven it as follows:
I created a new test account on my Mac, opened up iTunes and started to import my music from my main account. After a few albums had imported, I cancelled the import and looked at the library - fine. Then, I completely uninstalled iTunes from my main account and reinstalled a fresh copy. This did not solve the problem, but it proved that even with fresh software, the problem persisted and the previous test showed that the software was fine with a fresh user.
So, next I tried to rebuild my library, and that's what worked. Basically, you need to delete your itunes library xml file and the (compiled?) itunes library file (.itl) BUT DO NOT delete the iTunes Music Library.xml file... this is the key to it all...... you're gonna use that file to import the whole library as a playlist so you're not starting from scratch.
Here's the instructions from Apple: http://bit.ly/gf8P0m
Hope this helps anyone that's still stuck with this problem.

Thanks! I have long had this problem, but before I do this... am I going to lose any data from my music library (ratings, playlists, play counts, custom artwork, etc.) if I follow these steps carefully? I have a large library and it won't be worth having to re-enter/lose a bunch of things just to retrieve this column.

  • Disconnected portable HD - Removed song names still remain in iTunes

There was a portable HD connected to my computer for some time that had additional music on it from what is actually on my computer.
After removing the portable HD, the song names for all the songs that were on the portable... still remain in my itunes... but of course will not play because the HD is not connected. They now all have little "!" marks beside them (meaning, i guess, 'wont play')
There were a few thousand songs removed, and a few thousand songs still remain...
My question is... is there any way to remove all 'song-less song titles' from my itunes in a couple of clicks rather than going through and deleting each individual one?

Assuming they were all added at the same time, sort the list by "Date Added" and they will all be together in a bunch. You can click the first one and shift-click the last one to select them all.
If you don't have the Date Added column, add it from the View Options menuItem.

  • Mac recognizing artist, song name, etc.

i'm trying to load up itunes on my wife's mac, i use a PC for myself. Don't know why, but the computer is not reading artist name, album, song name off of the cd's. Everything goes on to itunes as unidentified track 1, 2. 3 etc. Is there some setting that I'm missing?

Is the Mac connected to the internet when you are importing your CDs? iTunes picks up the track information from an online database. It will do this automatically if you are connected while you are importing or you can do it afterwards by connecting to the internet, highlighting the tracks and going to Advanced>Get CD Track names: iTunes for Mac- I don't see the names of songs
Also, what sort of CDs are they, commercial CDs or CD-Rs? If they are mixed ones you made yourself on another computer the track names will be seen as Track 01, Track 02 etc. and the information has to be keyed in again by hand (unless someone uploaded the information to the CD database): How iTunes remembers Audio CDs

  • Song name category column stuck on the left.  I want artist's name first.

Hello. Somehow my default view in iTunes (the latest version) has come up with the song name on the very left, rather than artist. I want to sort by Artist, then songname, etc. I can't drag the songname column away from the first position or drag a category in front of it. I've tried deleting all of the columns, but songname can't be deleted. I've tried selecting a different category, but it stacks up new categoryt names to the right. I can reposition those categories. This is driving me crazy. Can anyone help? Thanks.
      Windows XP Pro

That is so lame. I read in another thread that the reason the Name field can't be moved is that it's the database index field. Well, the index field's position doesn't matter in a 'normal' database. You can format a report any way you like, regardless whether you're reporting the index field. What a crock.
Apple needs to fix this, pronto. Thought I had a buddy about to switch to iTunes (and ultimately a Mac) but this one thing ****** him off so much he'll probably never look at another Apple product. And he's right - that is just plain ignorant. Never thought I'd see the day a PC app made more sense than an Apple one. I'm very disillusioned.

  • Song Name Field Not Showing up when Ipod connected to ITunes

I have one of the first IPOD's (15GB). When connected to ITunes and I click on music to see my whole list, it does not display the "song names". I've been through all the help screens, and they say to "check mark" the song name field. When you bring that up, there is NO choice for song name field. My wife also has the same IPOD and it displays the song names just fine...also without an available choice for song name. I have found a work around and that is bringing up the Get Info on a song and copying the name over to the "sort name" field, which there is a choice to display that. However typing this on every song is way to long as I have 3,000 songs in there. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes ignores "the" in song names, how do I disable?

iTunes seems to ignore the "the" prefix in song names.
However, when one of my songs for example is named "The World". I refuse to call it "World" just because iTunes has this ridicilous limitation.
So I wanted to ask, how do I disable this?

iTunes intentionally ignores articles (a/an/the) at the beginning of text for the purposes of sorting. "The Beatles" get sorted under B not T. You can override the default behavior by putting the original non-sort values in the corresponding sort field. So if you want a song called "The World" to appear with other songs that begin with T (in a lists sorted on song name) then change the sort name to "The World", instead "World", or leaving it blank.
If you want to completely eliminate this auto-sorting feature you should be able to adjust a file called SortPrefixes.plist (location dependent on OS) and remove the entries you don't want. You will probably have to reapply this fix after each iTunes upgrade and I don't believe the effect carries through to your devices.

  • Itunes cut off ends of songs names

My songs names are cutted by itunes, a tried to convert with the ID3 converter but nothing has changed...
Thank you for your help and sorry for my poor english.

Dude, I first noticed the problem on iTunes a while back. I've been growing my mp3 collection since 1999 and its about 80gigs now so you can imagine how ****** off I was when iTunes cut all the song titles that were long. I have songs that are now named like this: Michael Jackson & The Jackson Five -
Chris CA you are totally missing the point here. iTunes didn't warn Neesh and I that it was going to completely f*%k our song names up. The first time I installed and ran iTunes it also took my 60 gigs of music and sorted it into folders, most of which were named "Unknown Album". It also copied the music into the iTunes Music folder so that there it took up twice as much hard drive space.
Anyway Neesh, I tried Media Monkey but that was worse. Now I have a bunch of files that are .mediamonkey files. What the **** is that?
So far, the best mp3 player was the original WinAmp. Its since been messed up so we're all stuck with iTunes. I wouldn't be surprised if one day it deletes all my mp3's that weren't purchased from the itunes store. So now I am backing up all my music.

  • Song name & song playing are different 16,041 songs screwed

Hi, I am thinking someone must have a good idea as to why in iTunes my song names are not matching up with the song being heard(played). It is as though something has scrambled the songs and the written information. Some songs simply do not play at all, even when I go into the Library and manually double click on the individual song file there is no reaction or sound.
I have my iTunes Library on an external hard drive, iTunes 6.0(17) installed and 16,041 songs all scrambled like an omelette.
Any ideas as to the next step?
    Cheers, D.

    Hi,
    An update is in order;
2.3 is a version of ID 3 tag that works well with iTunes... the option to choose a version is given to you when you make a change.
I tried to convert using 2.3 for the I.D. Tags, the only tags which would allow
this were the MP3 tags, the AAC tags this option was greyed out. I tried this
process to 2.3 but it changed nothing in synching the song name with the
song playing and when I confirmed that 2.3 was checked the bow was
unchecked. Tried a dozen different songs and all would not take the I.D. tag
    change. Odd?
Do this and we will sort it out for you... make a duplicate copy of the iTunes Library file... select the file and type command - D ... leave the copy where it is.
Start iTunes and set the preferences > advanced > general tab NOT to copy files when adding to library and DO keep iTunes Music folder organized ... set the Location for new music by clicking the change button and choose the folder with the music files inside on the Ext HD... OK the changes.
From the file menu select 'add to library' and choose the folder with the music files inside on the Ext HD.... after iTunes has checked it all and redone the links see if all is OK.... come and tell me what happened.
I did as instructed, four times as a matter of fact. Still no change in the
    scrambled iTunes scenario.
I have posted this Scrambled iTunes problem on a few internet boards and thus far it has stumped those in the know. At least I know what has not worked, better than before really. Simply a matter of trying all the suggestions until one works. I always believe there is a way, just a matter of time. Along the way I am certainly learning a few things, a good point.
Any ideas? If you think it is time to close the lid on this case I understand, sometimes moving on is an idea after all has been tried. I do appreciate your time and effort in sorting out this mess.
    Cheers, S.

  • Song names imported as "artist - track name" instead of "track name"

When I add a folder to my library (a folder which contains MP3 files which all contain complete ID3 tags), about 50% of the song names get imported as "artist - track name" instead of just "track name". If I click on any track which was imported like this, and right-click and select "get info", the track name shows up correctly in the dialog box, and it suddenly fixes the display on the listing (without me doing anything).
I could fix each song by clicking "get info", but I would have to do this for all my songs, which would take far too long. Is there any way to get iTunes to import these track names correctly? Or is there a way to refresh the listing, and have iTunes re-read the ID3 tags on the MP3 files?
      Windows XP Pro

To get the track names etc., when importing a CD, you have to be connected to the Internet.
    This article explains why.
To get the info later, select all tracks (with the generic track names) of an album and choose 'Get CD Track Names' from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
Very often the correct information will show up.
    Hope this helps.

  • Song names do not show up on itunes from my own cd's

When I load a cd into my computer it does not show the album name or the song names. Does anyone know what I ma doing wrong

    From iTunes 101 http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/tunes/2/#1
    1. Insert an audio CD into your computer.
    2. If your computer is connected to the Internet, iTunes will automatically display the album title and all track names (if the album is listed in the Gracenote CD database).

Err this is no longer April 1st you know.
The iPod Shuffle has never had a 'display' on which track names can be shown. See http://www.apple.com/ipod-shuffle/ if you want an iPod which does have a display on which you can see the tracks names and even the album cover art then look instead at the bigger and more expensive iPod Nano http://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/ or iPod Touch http://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/
PS. The current iPod Shuffle even though it has no display on which it can show the track names can read them out loud to you using a voice-synthesiser this is the VoiceOver feature described on the iPod Shuffle product page I listed above.
