All my Admin users changed to standard

I was using my Macbook to access a Mac mini server and deleted some of the 85 unknown user accounts that appeared in the Server’s system. Now all the unknown user accounts have disappeared but now all Mac mini user accounts are standard, so I don’t have any admin accounts in my server. I restored the system (Mac OS X 10.7.2) but the problem remains. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a Safeboot?
After a safeboot, if you still do not have an admin. You could reset the password for root, login as root, and then enable administration on one of your accounts.
1) option boot to recovery parition (turn off the computer, when the computer chimes, press and hold option.)
2) chose recovery parition
2) chose english
3) use the Utilites menu to open the terminal
4) type "resetpassword" into the terminal
5) when reset password opens, choose the account root, type in a password and reset the password to the password
6)  close all the open windows, it should offer you to chose a startup disk, do so and reboot
7)  when the computer reboots, chose other from the login options, type in the user name "root." and use the password you set
8) ones logged in, go to system prefrences, accounts, select the user you want to be an admin, check "Allow this computer to administor the computer." log out, and log in as the account you want.

  • Send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user.

I would love to send a Unix command through ARD that will change a OS X admin user to a standard user. The only thing I found close is
sudo dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership USERNAME
which does remove the user from the list of admins, but they are still listed as an admin in the user preference panel, and can still use their account to authenticate for admin privileges.

I'm not having any problems adding or removing users from the 'admin' group by using the syntax's
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
    or
dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername
What I'm saying is if a user is ticked as an Adminstrator in System Preferences and I run the
dscl . -delete /Groups/admin GroupMembership ARDusername syntax and remove them from the 'admin' GroupMembership they still have the Administrator box ticked in System Prefs and can administer the machine.
By the way the '/' doesn't work in the syntax in ARD.
    Thanks

  • Non admin user - changes not saved (Safari settings, system prefs, etc.)

iMac, 2 users, one is administrator and other is standard user. Recently, in the non-admin user account, it has become impossible to make any changes. For example, adding an application to the the Dock, after logging out and back in next time, the application is not in the Dock any more. Also, making changes to the prefs in Safari, changes are not saved.
I noticed this after installing FireFox v4. I installed it as admin whilst in the non-admin users account. However, I don't believe that the installation of FF has anything to do with the problem, it just highlighted it. I've checked the permissions for the various directories that hold prefs info such as user/libraries/application prefs/etc. etc. and also Safari prefs. Nothing I can see that has changed in system prefs.
Any ideas on what has caused the problem (kids are known to fiddle from within the non-admin account) and any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi PPRuNe,
You could try making the standard user an Admin too. To do this, make sure you are logged in to the standard user, go to System Preferences > Accounts > Standard user (you may have to unlock the padlock) > Allow user to administer this computer
This will allow changes to be made without being prompted for a password all the time.
However, if you had Parental Controls on, they probably won't work on an admin account because as an admin you have complete control over a computer, so the computer thinks there is no point in having the controls turned on. And if the kids are known to "fiddle," just think carefully!
    Hope this helps you.
    Chris.

  • How 2 synchronize my Bookmarks, not another PC, but between the Admin user and a Standard User, on my same PC?

Thanks for giving us the Sync function. But, never have I seen any mention of applying this to Sync bokmarks among Windows User Accounts or Mac Profiles. I am running Windows 8 (soon to go to 8.1 Update - - or, maybe, to Windows 7 Professional, if M$ cannot straighten out and fly right with 8.1U) on the HP notebook, and Mac OS X Lion (soon to go up to Mavericks or Yosemite) and I would like to take the good advice and do most of my browsing in the non-admin users instead of the Admins, but ... when I add some Bookmarks in one User, I needto find the new Bookmarks available in the other as soon as I switch Users. Please advise; someone expert in Windows/Firefox, and someone (maybe the same?) for Mac/Firefox. Your helpful assistance will be appreciated.

Sync works fine between two different Login User Accounts on a PC.And also between different operating systems on the same computer, for users who dual-boot.

  • Cannot change admin user to standard user (2 Admin Accounts)

I have an issue that I would like some help with.  When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer.  I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password.  I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account.  It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.
Any thoughts on why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"?  The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts, suggestions, ideas....

In a way it makes sense that the original Admin Account can;t be changed. If a user changed that account to non-admin and that was the only admin account it would be  a mess to undo it. I agree that there should be some indication of this and even the ability to over rider  it in a case like yours.
As there isn't the next best thing will be for you to duplicate the current admin account as a new user account and then use that duplicated account.
See How to copy a user account for instructions on how to duplicate an account.
post back if you have any questions.

  • My admin status has been changed to standard after the yosemite software update, now i have no admin and can't tso anything as before doing anything it asks for admin username and password, which i don't know as there is no admin!

admin status changed to standard, currently no admin, what to do!?

Please take these steps to restore administrator privileges to your account. This somewhat tedious procedure is only necessary if you've confirmed that no administrator account exists on the system.
If you don't already have a current backup of all your data, you must back up before taking any of the steps below. Ask if you need guidance. You won't need the backup unless something goes wrong—which is always possible.
    Step 1
Start up in Recovery mode. The OS X Utilities screen will appear.
    Step 2
Take this step only if you use FileVault 2. Launch Disk Utility, then select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the  Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
    Step 3
    Select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your startup volume if not already selected. Pull down the menu labeled
              Select the user account
    and select
              System Administrator (root)
Follow the prompts to set a password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9. I suggest you write down the password. If you don't write it down and forget it, you'll have to start over from Step 1.
    Select
               ▹ Restart...
    from the menu bar.
    Step 4
This step, like Step 2, applies only if you use FileVault. Log in as usual, then select
               ▹ Log Out...
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-Q. Don't restart. You'll be returned to the login screen.
    Step 5
At the login screen, click Other... Enter "root" (without the quotes) in the Name field, and enter the password you set in Step 3 in the Password field. You should now be logged in as root. This is a potentially dangerous condition. Do nothing while logged in as root except as indicated below. You'll be fine as long as you don't deviate from the plan.
Open the Users & Groups preference pane. Select your usual administrator account in the list of users and check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
You'll be prompted to restart. Do that and log in as yourself—not as root. Your administrator status should now be restored.
    Step 6 (optional, but recommended)
Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Disable the root user." You must authenticate in Directory Utility as "root" with the password you set in Step 3. Authenticating as another administrator won't work.

  • SA520 web access problem, all admin users sessions appears active when it is not true

Hi, all the users for the management access to my SA520 are blocked via web, all the admin users sessions aparently they seem active, and when i do click on the "continue" button these sessions does not terminate. I guess i have to reset the firewall, but my question is if anybody has the same problem with this device.

    Hi Luis,
What firmware version are you running? How frequent do you see this occurrence?
If  possible, when you start to see this issue before all the admin sessions are reporting active, can you provide us the debug logs from your SA  520 so that I can forward to the development  team to investigate?  We are tracking an issue with a customer, but his device takes 3-4 months to show the symptoms you describe.
To get the dbglog from SA520, login through web UI and in the browser enter the following URL:
    https://LAN_IP_address_of_SA520/scgi-bin/dbglog.cgi
These logs will store password, so please remove any sensitive information and passwords. Also if you are not comfortable posting the dbglog on the    community, you can send it directly to me through private message.

  • Install Admin user using ARD

I want to install a user on every mac in my company that has administrator privileges. I was using 'Create Client Installer' but it creates a 'Standard' user.
Is it possible to use 'Create Client Installer' to install an Administrator User or do I have to change the privileges of a 'Standard User'. If yes, how do I do that with the Send Unix command?
    Thanks in advance.

here is what we do at our place...
    #!/bin/sh
#create a new user for ARD admin access
#first thing first, create the local account for ARD viewing only
#this is a local non admin account
/usr/sbin/jamf createAccount -username ardview -realname "ARD Viewer" -password @rdvi3w –home /var/ardview –shell “/bin/bash” -hiddenUser
sleep 10 #let the account be fully created before we proceede
#next kick start ARD to allow access for this user
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -configure -users ardviewer -access -on -privs -ShowObserve
#now enable all for admin users
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ki ckstart -configure -users hadmin,cadmin,usd500kckps,root -access -on -privs -all
    echo "done"

  • Multi-user system, non-admin-users get "error 46" when downloading quicktim

Thanks in advance if you have some idea about where the root cause is.
    Error message:
"Error 46: Could not load or find the QuickTime ActiveX control."
    Context:
    - WinXP SP2 fully patched (as of 06/20/2006)
    - Multiple users: 1-Admin, all others a member of the Users group
    - Simple File Sharing is enabled (this problem does not change when this option is disabled)
    - iTunes 4.9.x and QuickTime 7.1 installed
    - Programs have been uninstalled and reinstalled several times, with no change
    Symptoms:
    - All system users can view quicktime movies when they are embedded in web pages.
    - Administrator can launch quicktime and view *.mov files, all others get Error 46 (see above) when attempting to launch quicktime or double-clicking on .mov files
    - File association properties (under Contorl Panel | Folder Options | File Types) shows .mov opens with QuickTime Player (deselecting this displays WMP as the application)
    - Users Browsing to a directory where .mov files are located, displays the WMP icon instead of quicktime (as under folder options)
This all used to work. It appears that this became broken in the last month or two, after either patching XP, or installing QuickTime 7.1 to gain H.264 codec functionality.
Is there a guaranteed way to force system wide file assoc that is reliable?
Is there a tool that parses the registry and displays what activeX controls are in use for a particular system operation?
    Thank you!
    Windows XP Pro
      Windows XP Pro

Fixed this using http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html and regedit.exe.
On my system, found that non-admin users were being denied access to these registry keys:
    HKEYCLASSESROOT\QTOControl.QTControl
    HKEYCLASSESROOT\QTOControl.QTControl.1
fix (both): add group users: read
That's because the non-admin accounts are members of the "users" group on my system. You may need to adjust this to match what is on your system.
Regedit can modify these permissions (but don't do it unless you are confident you can recover if you cause a problem). An easy fix, once the problem is identified. Some of you have already figured this out already.
Use regmon to get comfortable with how it works, make sure you grok the filtering, it's your friend.
Modifying the registry at your own risk. Remember to use a registry backup utility! I used http://www.fixregistry.com/download.htm "Registry Healer"
All non-admin users are operational at this time. I did not have to update iTunes and H.264 content works!
So it looks like this is a bug in the QuickTime 7.1 installer? Anyone have any insight about why this is happening with some regularity (at least according to the message board posts I'm seeing this month...)
Maybe the info is some help,

  • Why admin user cannot create Business Rules ?

    Hi All,
Why admin user can't create Business Rules. We've to create other userID and give the required roles and then we create Busines rules right ? Pls. advice

Historically, Business rules has an internal "native" admin user. When Hyperion is externalized, this internal id can conflict with the Shared Services admin user. Effectively the two admin ids start to conflict and cause issues. There are methods to resolve this issue, but I suggest as a rule not using the admin id for business rules, therefore bypassing the problem.

  • Newbie Question - application install/setup for admin and non-admin users

    Hi,
I'm 100% new to the Mac environment and OS X and I'm a bit confused as to the environment and setting up applications and such for users.
I have a brand new Macbook Pro that I need to set-up.
    USER Setup
    - have a dedicated admin account called "Administrator"
    - have a user account for my son, Joe.
    - have a user account for me, Matt, so I can fool around on the machine to see if I like it enough to get one myself.
This is the account setup model I'm most accustomed to using under OpenVMS and Windows - an administrator account and separate lower privilege accounts for users.
I have managed to accomplish these three tasks ok. I also enabled File Vault on my account only.
    APPLICATION Setup
We want to install the following applications but I'm having problems:
    - Firefox, for use by all three accounts, but with separate bookmark files for each user. This is the browser we are familiar with and want to start with (sorry Safari, maybe as time goes by).
    - Eudora for e-mail for just the two user (mine and Joe's) accounts, with separate user files for each account. It's the program we're familiar with.
    - Microsoft Office for all three accounts.
    - An architectural CAD program (ArchiCAD) for use only in my account.
    - PGP for use only in my account.
My real issues appear to be with how to install apps the way I need them to be 'visible' to users.
I started by logging in as Administrator and downloading/installing Firefox.
It installed ok under the administrator account but I can't find/access Firefox when logged in via my or my son's account and I don't know what to do to give my/Joe's account access to it.
    So,
    1) How do I install an application once and make it available to all accounts (admin & user)?
    2) How do I install an application and make it useable only by a subset of users
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Changing Admin user that was created at time of install of OSX to Standard

I have a Mac with an admin account the one that was created at the time of installing OSX 10.4 and I am trying to change that user to a standard user. I have made another admin and have also another standard user. I evry time I tray to change the admin user and turn off admin rights the box is grayed out.
What is up with the first user that is created at the time of installing the OS? Is that a user that cannot be changed? How can I change its privileges to standard user?

I have tested this on a few different Macs. I have found some that I can get the admin right away form the fist Admin the one created at the time of installing the OS. Others I am still puzzled to way I cannot change the fist account to a Standard. In all cases I have 3 accounts 2 admins and one standard. The times that I could change the account I was logged in the standard account.
Is there a work around to get an admin account to have the same permeations as a standard account when the admin box in users is grayed out?

  • How i can change to standard user, an admin user

    Hi,
How I can change to standard user an admin user, if the check box can not be unchecked.
I have opened the lock to allow for future changes.
I have more than one admin user.
As root user, I can't do it.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I have, but looks the same, unable to change.
I finally decided to create a new standard user and delete this.
    Thanks for the support.

  • Windows 7 Elevating using UAC, does not change the standard users setting, it runs the Admins settings

When elevating privilege for a standard user using an admin account, the UAC runs the application under the admins account "user" and not the standard users account "user", the problem is that doing so, it does not change the standard
    users settings
In this example, trying to change the "Check for Updates Automatically" as the standard user, is grayed out, you have to be an admin to change this. This is a design of Java.
When you right click and run as an administrator, the option is no longer grayed out and can be deselected, however, this only changes that setting for the admins specific "user", not the standard users specific "user" the admin is elevating
    privilege for. as illustrated below.
Is there a work around for an admin to run his credentials but elevate the standard users session instead of his own or some other way to set the standard users setting when admin credentials are required?

    Hi,
Based on your description, I understand that you want to disable
Check for Updates Automatically option for standard users in Java.
You can achieve this target by editing
