Calculating the true output frequency of a PXI-5402

I have a PXI-5402 card sat in a PXIe chassis. I am only interested in sine wave output at frequencies up to approx 10kHz. I know that it is posible to request an output frequency and then query the acutal output frequency but I would rather be able to calculate it before hand. All I can find in the literature is a figure of 0.355uHz for frequency resolution.
Is there a better description of the frequency resolution? If not, is the resolution exactly 0.355uHz or is this an approximation (to 3 significant figures)?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

This webcast is an excellent way to learn the process of which the NI 5402 and NI 5406 operate to generate their periodic functions: http://www.ni.com/webcast/75/en/
The 0.355uHz value is a theoretical value of achievable frequency rates based on the Clock Rate and Phase Accumulator size. This is the closest thing I can find on ni.com for you to use to calculate the value: http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/370524R-01/siggenhelp/ni_5401_11_31_frequency_resolution_and...
I believe Fc for the NI 5402/5406 should be 100M and the accumulator size is 48-bit. Therefore frequency resolution = Fc / 2N = (100 × 10^6) / 2^48 = 3.55271368e-7
Keep in mind that the device has a VCXO frequency accuracy spec of +/- 25ppm, if you do not PLL lock it to a better source.

  • Frequency Control Word (PXI-5402): Rounded up or down?

    A further question wrt PXI-5402 standard function generation.
    The frequency control word is calculated by dividing the desired output frequency by the sample clock frequency (100MHz for a PXI-5402) and multiplying it by 2^N where 'N' is the width of the DDS accumulator (48 for the PXI-5402). As the frequency control word is an integer does any fractional residual result in the control word being rounded up or rounded down?
    e.g. if a I request a frequency of 1Hz I get a control word of 2814749.767 which would give an actual output frequency of 0.99999997 Hz if rounding down or 1.00000008 Hz if rounding up.
    Thanks.

    I believe the FCW gets rounded. I actually was able to find a LV demo for you, but it was made for the 5411. You would need to change some values to make it work for the 5402/5406: http://www.ni.com/example/28757/en/
    Keep in mind that all of the DDS calculations are actually implemented in HW on an FPGA, see figure 2: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5516/en/. The tuning word here is the same as the FCW. This image used to be used on that white paper before it was updated. The adder in Figure 2 is the same adder in this image below.
    Also, as I have mentioned before, the accuracy for the Sample Clock above for the 5402 is 25ppm. If the actual frequency you are generating is such a concern, are you using an external high accuracy clock source? What is your application?

  • How to programatically very the PWM output frequency in 7344, to the desired value

    Hi
    I can use the PWM output only for the frequencies that is specified like 40Khz or 20KHz. I require to set the PWM frequency programatically to the desired value at a aduty cycle of 50%. How to implement this.

    What exactly do you need the PWM oututs for? Are you using a motion drive that requires a PWM command? The controller itself does not allow you to use the PWM ouputs to change the frequency on the fly. You might want to go to a DAQ board of Fielpoint moduel for this functionality.l

  • ?how do i ramp the Digital Output frequency?

    I need to apply a linear ramp to the output frequency of my digital TTL
    output to accelerate and deaccelerate the speed of a stepper motor - is
    there any way to do this such that the ramp is continous?
    using: Labview 5.0.1 on a PC with an AT-MIO-16E-1 board
    -thanks

    You can only decellerate the speed: see CTR Pulse Config.vi (see hierarchy
    of Generate Pulse Train.vi).
    In cluster 'low level parameters there is a auto-increment count value that
    adds to phase 1 of each new period

  • How do I set the master clock output frequency on the PCI-1424?

    I want to use the master clock to generate the pixel clock to the imaging chip.

    Hi,
    We have tried everything to be able to set the Master Clock Frequency (please confirm pins 89 and 90 on the 100 pin connector). Everything we try including opening NI supplied camera files sets the Master clock to 40MHz.
    You're code however does do something, the Master clock frequency is set to 5MHz when we open a camera file with your code included. All the attributes show up in MaX but changing the values from Max has no effect, and the frequency remains at 5MHz. We undertake an apply and snap after each change of value with no effect.
    Am I missing something as the command OnBoardClock is supposed to be used to set the Master Clock Frequency, but you don't use that in your text at all. I would appreciate an explanation of the text yo
    u use, if you have the time, as I cannot find any reference to how the software knows what "Frame Grabber Clock" is.
    Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Not able to flush the data output stream in n/w prg.

    Hi,
    I am trying to send and receive the data using TCP/IP channel using socket programming.
    Following is the server side code I have
    Socket socket = server_socket.accept();
    OutputStream output = socket.getOutputStream();
    BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
    String inputMessage = (String) input.readLine();
    System.out.println(inputMessage);
    output.write("Message from server");
    output.flush();I am able to receive the message from the client and as per the code the message is getting printed in the console. But I am unable to send the message back to the Client inspite of flushing the output stream.
    I am sure that the problem is because of the flush method which is not acutally flushing the data. If I use the "println" method instead of the write & flush method, everything seems to be working fine. I do not want to use the "println" method because I get an extra new line character in the msg I send to the Client.
    Any help on this is appreciated!

    No. I am not using BufferedReader to listen for the server response. Given below is my client side code.
    Socket socket = new Socket(<ip>, <port>);
    InputStream input = socket.getInputStream();
    PrintWriter output = new PrintWriter(socket.getOutputStream(),true);
    output.println("Request from the client");
    System.out.println("Waiting for the server response...");
    byte buffer[] = new byte[2000];
    input.read(buffer);
    System.out.println(new String(byte));I am not receiving the message from server, it hangs on "Waiting for the server response..".

  • Is there a way to change the true resolution rather than scaling?

    Hi,
    I have searched through just about every single forum, website and search engine there is and haven't found anything. Perhaps I am phrasing my question wrong. I currently own a Macbook Pro 13.3'' Retina (Of Mid-2014 since I just bought it?) and I can't figure out how to change the resolution. The OS seems to default to 2560x1600 no matter what I set it to because I think all its changing is the scaling. Is there a way to do this? I used to own a Macbook Air 13.3'' which ran 1440x900 and I know that it was pixelated. On the same size display here...when I run the claimed "1440x900" its still ultra sharp which means its using scaling I assume. Any ideas how do I change the actual resolution, not just the scaling. The OSX settings currently seem to be just the equivalent of modifying the DPI like you can in Windows. I want to find out if there is a way to change the actual output resolution.

    The MacBook Pro like all laptops has an LCD screen. Like all LCD screens the screen has a single physical resolution, in the case of your MacBook Pro Retina 13.3" it is 2560x1600 pixels. This is the number is dots the screen is physically made of.
    In the old days when desktop computers used CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) displays which looked like TVs these sort of displays could display multiple resolutions in fact CRTs have no single fixed physical resolution. However LCDs which use totally different technology do only have a single 'real' resolution.
    If your really interested in how a CRT can do different resolutions then the answer is that a CRT uses an electron beam to excite the phosphor display on the front of the display (to make it glow), it scans from left to right, moves down a line and then does the next line, and so on till it reaches the bottom and then goes back to the top. The speed (rate) at which it does this is known as the horizontal frequency and the vertical (refresh) frequency or rate. If the horizontal line is drawn specific time and that is divided in to 640 units, then it can be told to turn off and on 640 times per line, if the same line is drawn in the same time but the interval is divided in to 1024 then it can 'draw' 1024 horizontal pixels instead of 640 horizontal pixels. In actuality the display has no physical pixel you are merely lighting up small or larger areas on the screen and hence a CRT has no single fixed resolution.
    In order for a computer using an LCD display to use a different apparent resolution it has to 'scale' the image to a different size, as a very simple example if we wanted to scale down to 1280x800 pixels which is exactly half 2560x1600 then the computer would use 2x2 (four) physical pixels to represent a single scaled pixel. Often however the chosen scaled resolution may not be an exact multiple like that example. Apple on the Retina display have provided some suggested scaled resolutions which work reasonably well these being 1680 by 1050, 1440 by 900, and 1024 by 640 pixels.
    None of these will look as good as 2560x1600 because the screen physically is made up of 2560x1600 dots and no amount of cheating will change that.

  • When running an xml publisher report the xml output leads to 9 mb and the excel output file leads to 20 mb.But the output records is originally 4000 records. When copy to new excel it is showing 3.5 mb only. Does anyone knows the answer for this issue?

    When running an xml publisher report the xml output leads to 9 mb and the excel output file leads to 20 mb. The records contained in excel file is 4000 records. When taking the excel records and copy to new excel file the excel file size is 3.5 mb only.Why does the oracle software generates 20mb file?
    Does any one knows the answer please advice?

    Hello,
    This issue is because the Excel output from BI Publisher is MHTML (XML Publisher generates XHTML) not binary .xls.
    MHTML and XHTML are more verbose formats than binary .xls.
    It will be large because the current Excel output is just an HTML and not compressed like PDF. Please use the workaround (save it as .xls file).  This is a known limitation of RTF layout templates.
    BI Publisher Enterprise has a new feature True Excel Templates. The layouts generate binary Excel output.
    Excel Output File Size Generated By BI Publisher is Very Large (Doc ID 760437.1)

  • How to create a errortag in the XML-Output ?

    Hey
    who can help me creating a error-tag in my XML-output of a PL/SQL procedure ?
    Enviroment:
    Oracle DB is 8.1.7 with installed XDK-package (in a few
    weeks perhaps Oracle 9i). I've no problems to use the dbms_xmlquery-functions and -procedures.
    I've to develop a PL/SQL procedure which is called via JDBC from a JAVA program. The procedure execute a Select-Statement. The result is transformed in XML and stored in a CLOB, which is given back to the calling JAVA-program.
    There exist 2 possible result-situations.
    -1- one or more rows are found
    -2- no row is found
    Problem:
    For each of these situation the XML-Output should have a different structure and my main problem is to integrate the errortag !!!
    for -1-
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <data>
    <error err_code="NoError"/>
    <record num="1">
    </record>
    <record num="2">
    </record>
    </data>
    for -2-
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
    <data>
    <error err_code="NoDataFound"/>
    </data>
    Hope somebody can help me ???
    Andre

    Hey Rajat,
    thanks for your answer, but the errortag is needed by another department. They use it for their processing.
    Have you got any idea, how to integrate the errortag with the functions or procedures of the dbms_xmlquery package ??? I've got only a few days experience with the dbms_xmlquery-package, so some code examples or advices would be great !!!
    I've tried the following coding:
    out_xmlresult OUT CLOB; -- OUT Parameter of the PLSQL-Proc
    c1 CLOB;
    queryctx dbms_xmlquery.ctxtype;
    -- create XML-context
    queryctx:=dbms_xmlquery.newcontext(<selectstatement>);
    -- delete the rowsettag (use 'data' later on)
    dbms_xmlquery.setrowsettag(queryctx,'');
    -- create new tag 'data' which enclose an empty header
    -- and the data section
    dbms_lob.createTemporary(c1, TRUE );
    c1:=EMPTY_CLOB();
    dbms_xmlquery.setDataHeader(queryctx,c1,'data');
    -- rename rowtag
    dbms_xmlquery.setrowtag(queryctx,'record');
    -- set encoding tag
    dbms_xmlquery.setEncodingTag(queryctx,'ISO-8859-1);
    -- create XML-Output
    out_xmlresult := dbms_xmlquery.getxml(queryctx);
    ...but I haven't got any success !!!

  • Is it possible to use the HDMI output at the same time as the usb camera adaptor on an iPhone 4s

    I want to use the
    Apple Digital AV Adapter and
    Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit
    with my iphone 4s.
    I want to have the screen output to a larger screen (HDMI tv) and use a keyboard and mouse (usb) with the iphone apps.
    Anyone tried this or know if it will work?

    I have a raspberry pi and have bought the Atrix lapdock to use with it. I'm also hoping to use the lapdock with my iPhone 4s through the digital AV plug (HDMI and 30-pin) and the usb connector from the camera kit (into the 30-pin connector on the digital AV plug). I am making the assumption that they will work together, is that true? Anybody have both connectors?

  • How do I create an excel file that has the volume output and the time at which it occured?

    Hello:
    I am using Labview to control a New Era Pump Systems automatic syringe pump and to record diameter measurements from a LaserMike optical comparator. My program is fully functional, the code is attached with all auxilliary files in the NE-50X folder. I mostly understand my program, I used drivers for the NE-50X pump found on the NI website to build my code and added to it as needed.
    If anyone has ideas about how to do any of these three things, your help is greatly appreciated. I have the output from the syringe pump going into a line graph while I run the test with the time on the x-axis and volume on the y-axis. How would I be able to create an excel file from this information? I would like the excel file to have the time in one column and the volume at that time in the next column. I though that I had wired it correctly, however I feel that the time seems to be a little off and very exact. Attached is the block diagram of what I have done.
    Hello:
    If anyone has ideas about how to do any of these three things, your help is greatly appreciated.

    RATETEST.vi ‏202 KB

    Let me start by answering the specific question, and then I will provide some suggestions on the code.
    The function you want is the "Write to Spreadsheet File", which you're already using, albeit in a confusing means (more later). I was not able to find any place in your code where you're actually acquiring time information, so I don't understand your comment about the time not being exact. (I'm assuming you mean "not", even though that word was not in your actual sentence.)
    As for the code:
    As I mentioned, you're using the "Write to Spreadsheet File" twice, as well as the "Write to Measurement File" Express VI. All three seem to be logging the same information, though one of the "Write to Spreadsheet File" functions is logging some sort of volume and diameter information. Please pick one.
    You're looping around the path for one of the "Write to Spreadsheet File" functions, but not for the other two functions. Why are you looping the path in the first place?
    You' re continuously accruing data into an array to put onto an XY Graph. Please keep in mind that this means the program will slow down as it progresses as this array gets larger and larger, and LabVIEW needs to shuffle memory around. Depending on how fragmented your memory is, you may find the program will crash since LabVIEW cannot allocate a large enough contiguous block of memory for the array.
    Your wiring really needs to be cleaned up. Tip: Right-click on a wire and select "Clean Up Wire".
    In the middle of the diagram you have a case structure in which the True part has a single iteration loop that's adding 1 to the iteration and updating some local variable, and in the False part you're doing something else with it. I have no idea what you're trying to do, but surely there must be a better way to do it.
    You seem to have two tank indicators on top of each other on the front panel and then flipping the visibility of them based on some value. I would think that it would be easier to simply display both at the same time, no? As a user, I would find it somewhat perturbing to see the tanks appear and disappear.

  • Splitting datamatrix by output frequency

    Hi, I have trouble finding out how to solve a problem in Labview
    I am working on improving a program so that it may present data in different frequencies. My NI6211 reads 1000 analog samples per channel and second. I want to be able to display this data with various frequencies as i want to study transients more closely.
    The program used to run in 20hz, thus i presented 20 values every second and channel, each value the mean of 50 samples. When i had a fixed frequency of 20 i just told the Read.vi to get 50 samples every 50ms working cycle, used "index array" to split it into 15 1D rows and calculated the mean for each row. The rows were then assembled back into a matrix and used as output.
    Now i want to be able to run in 100hz/10samples (and also 50/20, 200/5, 500/2....). I have also changed the working cycle time to 60ms for other reasons.
    DAQmx thus reads 60 samples on 15 analog channels every working cycle, and so i get a data matrix of 15x60.
    Is there a way to split it into smaller pieces of 15x(sampling speed)? For example if i used a frequency of 100 i would get 6 sets of 15*10, allowing me to calculate the mean value of smaller intervals. For 500hz i would get 30 sets of 15*2 etc...
    Is it possible to split a matrix into equally wide columns? Can it be solved with an indexed for loop?
    Any help would be appreciated, im still a beginner at Labview!

    Your current code can be replaced by an autoindexing FOR loop, you only need once instance of the "add array elements" operation. Easiest would be to acquire it as a 1D array with a constant number of samples then use "reshape array" to create a 2D array of the desired dimensions to be used for autoindexing as suggested.

  • Problem with lenovo t60 and the vga output

    I have a problem with the vga output and the lenovo t60
    When i put the videoprojector connector in to the lenovo t 60, the projector reponde is:
    Not supported
    H: 48.20khz   v: 143,10 hz
     On my desktop pc the projector function on 1024x768 resolution and the 60 hz to refresh.
    The same configurations are on my laptop and the projector doesn't function
    Please help me.

    I too have this problem. My T61 worked fine for about a year, and then suddenly would no longer project. I had made no changes to the settings for the external display, though since the problem started I've tried many combinations without success. Typically the projector reports that the frequency settings the laptop is sending are unsupported. In my case the vertical rate is usually correct (60 Hz) but the horizontal rate varies wildly.
    I suspect a hardware problem, as this post suggests: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/av-multimedia-related/32128-laptop-wont-display-projector.html. (Note the message claiming that 6 out of 40 Lenovo laptops exhibited this problem.)
    Since my system is still under warranty I guess I'll have to get it repaired, but I'd rather hear of a software fix...
