EDID and LUT - a java question

Hi all!
I just got my Mac Mini two days ago. I need some help in accessing certain informations to a java app I'm ought to write. I tried to google 'em up, but I got stuck. Maybe someone here could help me?
1. How can I get EDID from my display? I've seen there's something called read-edid under linux, but I don't really know how close a relative Tiger is to linux/BSD.
2. How can I write to LUT on my Mac?
I suppose there are some libraries, that I can use, but I can't find them
If not, maybe someone could direct me to a C library, so I can hopefuly run it via JNI.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Pablo

  • How to compile and register a Java CFX tag with multiple class files?

    All-
If this is the wrong forum for CFX questions, please let me
    know.
I need to determine how to compile and register a Java CFX
tag that contains multiple class files. One class file implements
the CustomTag interface and the other class files implement various
supporting classes. All of the documentation that I have found
talks about using a single class file. I am assuming that a JAR
file will be involved, but I am not sure of the specifics.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    -Josh

Yes, it will involve a jar. Use your java IDE (eclipse,
etcetera ..) to create a jar containing all of the classes. Check
your ide's documentation for how to create jar files. After you
have created the jar, place the jar in the CF class path so CF will
recognize it. For example the {cf_root}/WEB-INF/lib directory. CF
must be restarted before it will detect the new jar. After
restarting CF, register the CFX tag in the ColdFusion Administrator
using the name of the class that implements the CustomTag
    interface.
Though it is worth noting you can also instantiate java
classes directly from ColdFusion (ie without using a CFX
    tag).

Second: I have a large music collection in my old Imac computer how do I transfer this information to my new computer? Also how can I share this information with other computers at home?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Java option icon not displaying AND Java not working, even after deleting and re-installing Java

Hi, I have uninstalled and re-installed Java. When I look at Add-ons, it shows Java Platform SE7 U17 10.17.2.2 and Java deployment Toolkit 7.0.17… 10.17.2.2 enabled. But it is not working – and I do not see the Firefox plugin to allow occasional use of Java.
One useful thread which discusses several difficulties in detail is
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/944956?esab=a&as=aaq
I tried to follow scrumpyjoe’s advice in this thread:
“This fixed it for me (32 bit windows) after installing Version 7 Update 10, but not seeing the plugin:
    1) start regedit

    4) click on it, then right click and add new string value, name: path
    5) right click, Modify, change value data to: C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\npjp2.dll [check if this is the right dll for your setup]
    6) exit regedit
    7) start FF”

What can I try next, please ?

I have now unistalled and re-installed Firefox 20.0. restored preferences etc. using MozBackup, and Java Platform and Java Toolkit10.17.2.2. both show as working Add-ons - BUT STILL NO JAVA AND STILL NO RED ICON IN TOOLBAR. What is going on, please ?

  • Forte for Java question

By using the JDBC form wizard, I generated a swing program. Along with the java code, there is a form file which looks like an xml file. My question is how to complie and run the java source code without a forte4j IDE?
    Thanks

One thing is you need the jdbc in your classpath or specify at runtime. Search compiler in the forte help menu - to see options.
    execution : <specify at runtime>
    java -classpath:.;postgresql.org Program
-- above for postgresql driver residing in same directory as Program.class
    compile : javac Progam.java or javac -classpath .;postgresql.org Progam.java

  • JQuery/Java Question

    Hi,
I'm putting together a site for which I've taken a "pre-packaged" set of scripts to control the nav menu (taken from this site: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/ddsmoothmenu.htm)
However, when I run IE8 developer tool and debug, I get the following error: 'parent().get(...)' is null or not an object
I don't know Java and have no clue what this means.  Is it a simple fix?  One I could do on my own?  Or should I start looking for a different script to use?

This question is related to Javascript, not Java.
There's a world of difference between Java and Javascript.
Java is a programming language. Javascript is a widely used scripting language used on websites. The word "Java" is sometimes misleadingly used as shorthand for Javascript.
Got a link to your site so we can take a closer look?

  • JRE 8 and Locale.setDefault(), java 8 update 5, Windows 7

    Hello,
I have simple question that i can't resolve.
I am working on JavaFX application in which I am using DatePicker. This part is not important.
My date picker is formating date based on my Windows 7 OS Regional and Language settings(Formats).
    This part is now relevant:
In order to try to make my app Regional independant, and show date format always as US, I only once used this line of code:
    Locale.setDefault(Locale.ENGLISH);
    Here is problem:
Now when I remove this line of code "Locale.setDefault(Locale.ENGLISH)" my application is no longer able to get Regional format from my Windows 7 OS Regional and Language settings(Formats). Locale informations are permanently lost in JVM. Things are even worse, because my JDBC connection is not working now, and it reports:
    java.sql.SQLException: Locale not recognized
      at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CTTIoauthenticate.setSessionFields(T4CTTIoauthenticate.java:1006)...
How can I revert to old JVM behaviour, and get Locale information from my Windows 7 OS Regional and Language settings(Formats) automatically? Any help?
The application now is only working when there is Locale.setDefault(Locale.ENGLISH); line in code.

I am constantly using JRE8. Now
Locale.getDefault(Locale.Category.DISPLAY) returns en_US which is OK
    and
Locale.getDefault(Locale.Category.FORMAT)? returns bs_BA_#Latin witch is something I set wrongly with my Locale.setDefault.
I think that this bs_BA_#Latin. How can I repair this and make JRE8 read Locale settings from regional settings?
    Many thx

It is NOT a ""here's my spec". As simple as it is.
And of course I know help here is free as in other thousands of forums
That is not really the issue.  You have already noted that this is not as simple as you thought.  There have been at least three statements in reponse to your request.  The reasons for these statements are that you are asking for someone to
write a script that is not a simple script.  YOu canwrite a script and post it with questions and your questions will be answered.
I posted before that you cannot copy applications like Office between systems.  They must be installed.  Office and most other applications can g\be installed by Group Policy.  This -is how we normally do this in Windows.  There is normally
no other way to do this for a large number of systems.
For large numbers of arbitrary file we would normally use RoboCopy.  The issues you have had with RoboCopy can be overcome by setting the correct options.  If you are trying to copy Office or other applications you sill likely find that many files
are locked.  This cannot be overcome by any copy method.  This is one of many reasons why we use Installers for applications.
I suggest that you learn the basics of Windows and how it manages applications and files.  Getting the fundamentals clear will help you to understand how to perform basic tasks in a Windows network.
If you really need help with this then you need to step back and explain exactly what is being copied and why.  I can think of no real world scenario where what you are asking for is necessary.  If you can  explain that perhaps we can point
    you at a usable solution.
Just keep in mind that you cannot remotely install Office or most applications by copying the files.  This has always been true in  Windows.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • General Java questions

    1) A program written in Java is supposed to be multi-platform. However, I notice alot of programs I've seen written in Java are distributed to specific systems using different file extensions. The Windows version usually uses the .exe extension and I'm wondering how come they don't use the default .class extension? One major company is Borland for their JBuilder. They had a Windows version long before a Linux version even though I hear it was created in Java.
    2) Is there a free install program for Java or are the only ones commercial products?
    3) Is there a personal database available for Java that will work on all platforms? In my Internet Programming with Java class we used mySQL but I don't want to use a server database let alone one that will require a seperate install.
    4) Is there a free multi-platform IDE for Java (not counting just a text editor)?
    5) Can you universally access a system with Java? Ex. If I wanted to load an application with Java in Linux and Windows do I need to write two seperate routines on how to do this or does Java have a built in function? If I wanted to delete a file is this written universally the same?

Java.Java programs are packaged (wrapped) to allow invocation using a .exe extension. It is not mandatory, nor is it a function provided within the native Java libraries. Standard Java is packaged in .jar files that allow execution within a Windows (or other) environment. Environmental setup is necessary to allow the O/S to find the Java libraries. This is a simple process that includes additions to the PATH and CLASSPATH environment variables.
    2) Is there a free install program for Java or are the
only ones commercial products? I believe installAnywhere has a stripped down version of an installer that you can use for free. They also have a pay-per version that provides more extensive functionality.

Programming with Java class we used mySQL but I don't

These are written and deployed as Java libraries, and can run within the same JVM as your application or in a seperate JVM on the same machine, or on a seperate machine with IP connectivity. I'm sure there are more, these are just two that I have used. I don't know that there are any free implementations of embeddable databases for Java (but just wait awhile, things change all the time).
    4) Is there a free multi-platform IDE for Java (not

I personally use Sun ONE Studio CE (formerly Forte for Java) which is also free but uses a lot of resources, so be sure you have an adeqaute workstation to run it on. Again, I'm sure there are others, these are just the ones I have had success with.
    5) Can you universally access a system with Java? Ex.

A seperate method is probably not necessary for each O/S, just different parameters passed to the exec function.
File I/O and file manipulation can be done using Java, and does not have to be O/S specific (but you have that option if you want to).

I would like some potential questions from you which I could ask someone who claims he/she is a good java programmer??
I am asking because I want to be as fair as possible to the applicant and not ask them questions which I think are tough etc...

    Touchy subject.
The language is not as important, as understanding programming concepts.
So fine, when the programmer's horizont involves some abstraction levels.
If a programmer can write an UML class diagram for a linked list.
If a programmer knows a design pattern Singleton.
If a programmer can write his/her own single linked list class with sorted insertion.
    Language concepts:
    - Why:
    import java.util.*;
    Map map = new HashMap();
    - Answer:
Hiding the choice of implementation (HashMap) by using the more general
    interface Map.
Don't expect much on an interview though. The situation might not be
adequate to distinghuish between the good and the bad apples.
Talking code is a good starting point, code of your making unfortunately.
A good programmer will hesitate to show really useful code.
A bad programmer might have stolen his/her code.
The problem you might have, that you are in search of an expert, not
having the expertise in-house. In that case you might get a better
picture, talking about which IDE would be opportune, whether he/she
has experience with the source version system CVS, what would his/her
    ideas be about coming projects.
That would establish a common line of communication.

    Hi All,
I have come accross few java question, could any one please provide best answers please?
    1. Why the wait() method is there in the Object class? Not in the Threads?
    2. Why JDBC has all interfaces & not classes?
    3. Which type of collection do u prefer to make the incoming objects in sort order?
    4. Why the hasCode() method should be implemented if we are overiding the equals(0 method?
Please provide me best answers ASAP.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
    Eric Steven Raymond
    Rick Moen
Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language
We've found by experience that people who are careless and sloppy writers are usually also careless and sloppy at thinking and coding (often enough to bet on, anyway). Answering questions for careless and sloppy thinkers is not rewarding; we'd rather spend our time elsewhere.
So expressing your question clearly and well is important. If you can't be bothered to do that, we can't be bothered to pay attention. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal - in fact, hacker culture values informal, slangy and humorous language used with precision. But it has to be precise; there has to be some indication that you're thinking and paying attention.
Spell, punctuate, and capitalize correctly. Don't confuse "its" with "it's", "loose" with "lose", or "discrete" with "discreet". Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS; this is read as shouting and considered rude. (All-smalls is only slightly less annoying, as it's difficult to read. Alan Cox can get away with it, but you can't.)
More generally, if you write like a semi-literate b o o b you will very likely be ignored. So don't use instant-messaging shortcuts. Spelling "you" as "u" makes you look like a semi-literate b o o b to save two entire keystrokes.

  • Opengl and directx for java or c++ or Java3D

I am new to the 3D programming and I have many queries and I hope those expect can answer me. Thank you very much.
I have some experience in writing directx 7.0 in C++. I find that the IDirect3DDevice7 in directx7.0 does not support 256 colors but direct3ddevice in directx5.0 does.
However, the direct3ddevice in directx5.0 in 16 or 32 bit color performs very strange. Distortion is found in displaying a 3D image.
    1.     Do you have this experience? Does direct3ddevice in directx5.0 not work in 16 or 32 bit colors?
    2.     If I want to write a 3D directx program in C++ that can be work in every resolution, what can I do?
    3.     Can opengl work in every resolution 256 colors, 16, 32 bits?
    4.     Does opengl work in every platform?
    5.     Can I write an opengl program in window platform and run it in Linux without any modification or compilation ?
    6.     Does the opengl runtime different from platform to platform ?
    7.     If I deploy an opengl progam, do I need to deploy the runtime for a particular platform with it.
    8.     Opengl is claimed to be open source. What does it mean ? Can I modify the code of the opengl sdk or runtime and re-complie it and make it my own version of opengl ?
    9.     I find many version of opengl sdk in the web. Some is special to a particular hardware eg. NVIDIA. Some is not bounded to any hardware. What is the different between them ? How can I choose from them ?
    10.     I know that there is directx for java and opengl for java. Is it the so called java 3D ?
    11.     Does opengl or directx together with Java2 become Java 3D ?
    12.     However I cannot find any directx code or directive for importing the directx package in the Java 3D sample code.
    13.     Does the Javax provide the utility for 3D programming by hiding the 3D device or texture surface creation ?
    14.     I find some code segment from MSDN which shows the way to create a directdraw object in an applet. I wonder what is the proper way to use directx or opengl in java since my main goal is to create a directx application that can be worked in the web.
    15.     Lastly, from my understanding, directx is a com api which can be used in every programming languages. Does it imply that with a directx sdk, I can write a directx application in C++, java, or vb ?
    16.     But, I find that the code to do the same task in the three programming languages is very different. The object creation methods, the data structure for directx in the three programming languages is different. Is the same sdk realy used in different programming languages ? The object name for e.g. direct3ddevice is different from vb (Direct3DDevice7) and c++ (IDirect3DDevice7).

I'm no expert in 3D graphics programming, but I have some experience. I'll try to answer some of your questions.
    2.     If I want to write a 3D directx program in C++ that
can be work in every resolution, what can I do?I think both DirectX and OpenGL supports any resolution and color depth. It's more a matter of which resolutions your graphics driver supports.
    3.     Can opengl work in every resolution 256 colors, 16,
    32 bits?Yes.
    4.     Does opengl work in every platform?OpenGL is available on many platforms. Look at GL4Java if you want to use OpenGL in Java, it's available on many platforms. Look at: http://www.jausoft.com/gl4java.html
    5.     Can I write an opengl program in window platform
and run it in Linux without any modification or
compilation ?Yes, if you write it in Java. In C++ you will need to recompile the app.
    6.     Does the opengl runtime different from platform to
platform ?No, it's a standard. There are some extensions that are driver dependant, but if you stick to the standard it will run unmodified on all platforms.
    7.     If I deploy an opengl progam, do I need to deploy
the runtime for a particular platform with it.I don't think OpenGL is available by default on all platforms.
    8.     Opengl is claimed to be open source. What does it
mean ? Can I modify the code of the opengl sdk or
runtime and re-complie it and make it my own version
of opengl ?OpenGL is not open source. OpenGL is a standard, it can't be open source since there is no source code.
    9.     I find many version of opengl sdk in the web. Some
is special to a particular hardware eg. NVIDIA. Some
is not bounded to any hardware. What is the different
between them ? How can I choose from them ?If you have modern graphics card the driver includes support for OpenGL on MS Windows. For Linux you use Mesa I think. See GL4Java homepage for more info.
    10.     I know that there is directx for java and opengl
for java. Is it the so called java 3D ?GL4Java implements the OpenGL functions in Java. Java3D is a high level API that runs on either OpenGL or DirectX.
    11.     Does opengl or directx together with Java2 become
Java 3D ?No. The Java3D package is available for download at java.sun.com.
    12.     However I cannot find any directx code or
directive for importing the directx package in the
Java 3D sample code. You can't call DirectX directly in Java3D. It hides the underlying layers.
    13.     Does the Javax provide the utility for 3D
programming by hiding the 3D device or texture surface
creation ?Java3D is platform independent and hides things like the hardware, drivers etc.
    14.     I find some code segment from MSDN which shows the
way to create a directdraw object in an applet. I
wonder what is the proper way to use directx or opengl
in java since my main goal is to create a directx
application that can be worked in the web.I dont know if DirectX is available for Java. I recommend that you use OpenGL instead, or Java3D if you want an easy, high level API.
    15.     Lastly, from my understanding, directx is a com
api which can be used in every programming languages.
Does it imply that with a directx sdk, I can write a
directx application in C++, java, or vb ?In C++ and VB, yes. Dont know if there are any Java DirectX bindings available.
    16.     But, I find that the code to do the same task in
the three programming languages is very different. The
object creation methods, the data structure for
directx in the three programming languages is
different. Is the same sdk realy used in different
programming languages ? The object name for e.g.
direct3ddevice is different from vb (Direct3DDevice7)
and c++ (IDirect3DDevice7).Don't mix programming languages in the same app. Decide if Java or C++ is the right language for you, then use the tools available for the language you choose.
My recommendation is to go for Java and Java3D if you are inexperienced with 3D graphics programming. Use Java + OpenGL if you know about vertices, textures, transforms etc.
