Firfox 4 seems to have Yahoo! as the default search engine and won't let me change this to Google or any other. Is this a flaw in the system??

What more info do you need? I just can't get Firefox 4 to let me change my search engine to Google and there's nowhere in the tools menu to help.
Also, Firefox is a lot slower to load than, say Safari or Chrome. Do you have a good excuse for this??

This issue can be caused by an extension.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In "Options" I do not have a default search engine and does not let me install one, how do I resolve it?

I don't have any serch engine, and if I want to install it from the web page, i click the "+ Add to Firefox" icon and it doesn't do anything. Also, if I write a web adrees at the adress bar, it doesn't work.
I've already tried to uninstall and install it again, and it doesn't fix it.

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

Mail: unable to connect to my SMPT server? Also new Mail Account defaults to iMap and won't let me change to Pop?

I've been with the same UK internet and email provider for years and they've given me solid and reliable service. I've worked my way through the Apple Knowledgebase checklist and tests and proved that my isp/esp is working normally so the problem has to be with Mail.
I fiddled about trying to create a Mail Account on my late 2011 but-new-to-me MacBook Pro a couple of days ago and, it might be completely unrelated and simply a coincidence, but since then none of my devices, Iphone 4S, Powerbook G4, iPhone 3G, the MBPro can send email using Mail.
Whenever I try I get prompted for my password but when I enter it says it's wrong but it definitely isn't because I even changed it this morning through my isp/esp and it worked and I then changed it back again to my correct password and it works also to get into webmail that is, not via Mail.
When I run Mail\Window\Connection Doctor and check the status it shows Mail is unable to connect to server but that it can connect to the internet. I get the following message: Trying to log in to SMPT account failed. Try to verify that username and password are correct.
Now, whenever I try to create a new email account on MacBook Pro Mail keeps defaulting to iMap and wont let me change it to Pop which is what I need.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I'll finish off this thread in case it's of use to anyone else in the future.
I couldn't get the email pop account to recognise my sign-in even though I've been using it continually and without problem for the last several years. It's always been BT and Yahoo so it's more likely to be the fiddle about I did on my temporary, pre migration user account that caused the hiccup.
In th end I had to create another pop account which I was able to once I'd migrated my settings from my PB G4 to the MB Pro. Unfortunately this didn't merge the numerous email folders that I'd created previously in Mail but I still have them on the PB and I believe they can be transferred manually which is what I will do.

I changed the email on my Apple ID and iCloud account, but my iPhone still thinks it's the old iCloud email and won't let me change it. How do I switch the emails on the iPhone?

It won't let me delete iCloud or sign out without SIGNING IN with my old email, which doesn't exist anymore.
It shows no option to sign in with my new email/password and the popups are getting obnoxious.
Now Apple is telling me I can't edit my own post?

How do I set Google as the default search engine in the URL search field (now have Yahoo)?

I'd like Firefox to use Google as the default search engine for the URL search field, instead of Yahoo as I currently have. I've tried to find a place to reset this in Preferences but can't find a solution. Would be very grateful for any advice. Imagine it's simple.
NB: I'm talking of the left search field, not the right search engine one where it's easy enough to define.

How do I set Google as the default search engine in Firefox 5? I have tried several fixes but I keep getting a Yahoo search instead of Google.

Clarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure.

I am asking this question again, because upon checking the forum for a solution I was shocked and appalled by the severe lack of grammar, punctuation and spelling I encountered while reading answers to this question. I have tried the about:config solution and it did not work. My search engine used to be Google but it has changed to some random search engine that doesn't even have an official name. there is not option in the drop down menu. And there is no option in the FireFox Options. I am wondering why it is so hard to change something like this. there should be a button for those of us that aren't computer savvy. Am getting irritated that i can't just search something anymore.

I am trying to change the default search engine in the address bar to Scroogle SSL, I have tried editing about.config but it either goes to Google or on rare occasions it has opened to Scroogle SSL and the address bar shows https://ssl.scroogle.org/(+whatever was entered), while the main window shows a proxy error .
I have an idea that something needs to be added at the end of the URL in about.config to actually make it search.
Can anybody tell me what the specific settings would be to get this working?
I have Scroogle SSL in the search engine list but I want to remove the search box to save space.
Also I cannot get the search to open in a new tab even though browser.search.openintab is set to True.

Hi, having tried both ways myself what you say is true but that is not the source of my confusion.
(In fact I discovered that when I set the same thing up in Opera10.53 everything up to the ? appears on one line in the setup and the Gw=%s on another.)
What I cannot understand is why, if I am using Scroogle SSl search it is opening the OpenDNS guide.
If I use my Scroogle SSL home page it opens a minimal Google search page, the same thing happens if I use the search box. I expected this would be the same as well or am I missing something?
OpenDNS is preferable to Google but not what I was looking for.
Since I started writing this I have just discovered that changing the keyword.URL does not affect this.
Earlier I recovered my system from an image which undid the changes that I had made to about.config, I have run searches both before and after I edited it again. Both times I finished up on OpenDNS?

Sometime Bing is not located in the Add/Remove programs section of the control panel.
