Flattening image changes values of adjustment layers

I'm working with CS3 on a Mac OS 10.4.9, 4.5 gb ram. My image consists of 6 adjustment layers and a background layer. 5 of the adjustment layers (all curves) are set to luminosity and 1 color balance layer is set to normal blending mode. When I flatten the image the tonality in part of the image changes. I also tried merging down the adjustment layers one by one into the background layer but the final result is the same. Any suggestions?

Are you looking at the image at 100% of size (actual Pixels)?
It make a difference to what you see on the monitor when you flatten Layers.

  • Flatten images change appearance

I'm having a problem with two layered files. when I flatten them and they change appearance, that is they don't look the same as the layered file. I'm working in cmyk and the numbers remain the same but the file looks very different. One file I can turn off a levels move and a high pass layer and it will flatten ok. I know its not a profile issue because all my other working files flatten ok and the color setup is the same, Has anyone ever seen this before. I'v been working in PS since 3.0 and never had this type of problem.

In my experience, g ballard's advice will resolve most instances of this issue.
When 100% viewing and merging visible to a new top layer has not worked the image has always had lots of layers with layer masks and different blending modes applied.
Solution in these cases, for me, has been to:
    1) Determine which mask boundary is changing when image is flattened.
    2) Reload mask as a selection.
    3) Expand or contract the selection by 1 or 2 pixels (usually enough).
    4) Reflatten the image and evaluate effect of change at 100% scale.
    5) Repeat for each mask until you find the selection that is causing the change in appearance.
    This works for me.

  • Flattened image looking different than when layers are all seperate?

Hello, I have an image that I've made in illustrator/photoshop and I noticed that when I save the image as a jpeg out of photoshop after it is finished it looks way different that it does while in photoshop. I merged the layers just out of curiosity and it looks that way after all of the layers are merged. I have no idea why it is doing that. Is there something I can do to change this? it is just happened to one of my images. I have multiple pieces in this style and it hasn't happened to any of the other ones. Any help is appreciated, thanks

Try adding a copy merged layer to the top of the stack before flaterning (Shift Alt Ctrl e)

  • Adjustment layers effects not applying when flattening image or merging layers CS6

So about a week ago I noticed something changed with my adjustment layers. In an image I would make a selection and start using adjustment layers to edit that selection, and then once I was finished, I would merge the adjustment layers together so that I could erase outside areas where the effect was not intended. However, whenever I merged the layers, the effects would go away and the thumbnail preview by the layer title would become blank (gray and white transparent) as if there was not anything on the layer. I messed around and I reset Photoshop, and then I thought the layers were fixed. They were somewhat fixed, except I've started having trouble again. Now I'm having difficulty editing this one image i'm on. It's a portrait with a photoshop-created red mask going around eyes, and I used the dissolve layer effect on the original mask creation which was black at first. Then I selected that selection and made more layers editing the hue, saturation, brightness/contrast, and exposure.
I tried to save the image as a jpeg, and the effects were messed up. The hue and all other adjustment layers seemingly applied, except the dissolve effect does not show up at all. So I tried to fix it manually. I flattened the image first with intention to then save it as a jpeg, but as soon as I flattened the image, again the dissolve effect was not applied. Then I tried to merge the layers, and yet again, the dissolve effect was not showing up. It shows up fine in PSD form, something's wrong with the conversion process. Please don't be mean to me. I'm not great at photoshop, I'm not saying that I am or claiming to be a pro or anything I just want help from people who actually get it. I have CS6 and use a Macbook Pro.

I stopped even trying to read this append. For is seems very complex and overwhelmed my little mind. Please consider including some screen captures showing your Photoshop window with your document that your writing about open and the layer palette shows the structure of the document. For me examples and screen capture of the steps involves involved would be very helpful.

  • Flattening adjustment layers prior to converting modes

    Hi all,
I have a document with a load of layers and scattered throughout are adjustment layers. I need to get the document from RGB  to CMYK.
Is there an easy way to have the adjustment layers applied to all the underlying layers so I can convert without flattening anything other than the adjustment layers???
I hope that question made sense.
    Thanks,
    Bob

It may be easiest to finish any editing you need to do then flatten the image than to try to flatten the adjustment layers.
You could also save 2 versions, 1 RGB, 1 CMYK and should you need to edit down the road, edit the RGB then flatten convert and overwrite the CMYK version.

  • Advice when using lots of Adjustment Layers/Layer Masks

I want to create an image that will be composed of lots of layer masks that I am going to use to paint different effects back over someone's face. I currently have a hue/saturation adjustment layer that I used to desaturate the image and then I selectively painted that desaturated layer back over the skin of someone, I also want to add some green so I created a color balance layer and made a layer mask out of it and want to selectively paint back some green to the skin tone.
    1. Does it matter in the layer stacking order where these adjustment layers/layer masks reside?
    2. Any general tips for working with an image with lots of adjustment layers/layer masks?
    Thanks.

Depending upon the blend mode, it does matter what order you put the layers, as the topmost layer will affect what's below it.  You can play around with the different postions and see what works best for your image.  You can also group the layers, and set the blend mode of the group to anything other than "Pass Through", so that the adjustment layers only affect what's in the group.

  • Relationship of color picker with the adjustment layers ...

Do you know why the color of color picker changes when using adjustment layers?

The color of the color picker changes to black and white because adjustment layers have masks and they only operate with black, white, and grays in between.

  • Splitting a Flattened Image into Layers so I can use the Paint Bucket to change colors

I have what I think is a flattened image that is part of a Website template. (I'm assuming the image is flattened, because when I use the paint bucket to change the color, it colors the whole thing; and when I use the magic wand, the whole image is selected). I need to be able to use the paint bucket to change the colors. What do I have to do to make the image work that way? The image is made to look like you're looking left to right at four file folders. The folder labels are a different color. Is there some way to separate the folders (now in green), the folder labels (now in yellow), and the white background from each other, so I can apply the paint bucket to different layers later? I've worked on this for hours now, and can't seem to find the answer. I'll have to change the colors in the image at least 10 different times, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to using the brush or pencil tools.

    Darlene,
Another way is to use the Replace Color Tool. The Hue/Saturation method is probably easier, but I thought I'd mention Replace Color for your information.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=18IBCKnJchzoxfLEaw7Bu93j9W5jS
In my example I changed the 3rd label in your picture to red.
    1. Roughly select the label using the Lasso tools.
    2. Enchance>Adjust Color>Replace Color.
    3. Click on the label in the picture; it will appear in the box as white on black background. In general you would move the fuzziness slider until just the portion you wish to change appears white. In this case since the yellow is uniform with sharp border the fuzziness slider had minimal additional effect, but I did move it all the way right to capture the fringe pixels.
    4. Play with the 3 Transform sliders to get the desired result.
In this next example I changed the top of the lighthouse from red to green (why I would want to do that, I don't know!).

Note that in this case I didn't have to move the fuzziness all the way right.

  • Adjusting a flattened image file

    Hello!
Does anyone know an aswer to this question I´m pondering:
If I go on adjusting a psd-file which has been flattened, will the file´s image quality go worse?
Meaning that I´ve had a TIFF-file (made from a RAW-file) that I have adjusted with plenty of layers. After all the adjustments, I´ve made a copy of it, flattened the copied file, cropped it to the wanted size (no interpolation), and made some changes again with cloning tools and gaussian blur. But after this, I find I still have to make another version of the image with different adjustments of lightness (curves) and colors (color balance, saturation) and I´m pondering if I have to go back to the file with layers, or can I continue with the cropped file and make new adjustment layers on this flattened image. Would be better for the work flow and my nerves...
Thank you for anyone who got energy to read this and maybe help me!

If I go on adjusting a psd-file which has been flattened, will the file´s image quality go worse?
Basically any Adjustment will be detrimental – but usually the deterioration with Adjustments that are not extreme is (close to) unnoticeable.
Working in 16bit can help keep the detrimental effects smaller than when working with 8bit images.
I´m pondering if I have to go back to the file with layers, or can I continue with the cropped file and make new adjustment layers on this flattened image.
    Do you get banding?
It’s your image, so it’s up to you to decide if the image deterioration is so bad as to warrant starting over.
Why did you not continue working with the layered file anyway?

  • Flattening an image, changes it

When I flatten my image at completion, The images changes. Looks like my adjustment layers reset blending modes and adjustments. Tried uninstall, restart of photoshop and Mac, tried to flatten from tiff, psd and PDF. Same thing happens.. Please help!

Your layered and flattened documents are 16-bit RGB and the zoom is below 20%.
I bet the layered doc matches the flat one when they are viewed at 100% zoom.
Viewing at less than about 64% zoom when image Cache Levels is greater than 1 results in Photoshop taking shortcuts in calculating the display composite of a layered image, which will distort the appearance. Among the shortcuts is reduction of bit-depth from 16 to 8.
A flat document is, of course, not subject to display compositing shortcuts.
If you layer an image to achieve a particular look when zoomed to below 64% then it's likely to look significantly different when viewed at a greater zoom percentage, or when flattened.
Viewing at 100% is the only way to reliably determine the appearance of a document. Regardless of compositing distortion, the interpolation to produce Photoshop's zoomed-out display is not calculated in linear space (although it should be, in my opinion) so tones can be severely distorted, even in a flat document, at zoom less than 100%.
Something to try is going to Preferences > Performance and setting Cache Levels to 1 in order to avoid compositing shortcuts. However, Cache Levels 1 in combination with 16-bit mode can cause problems for some graphics cards. If you do change Cache Levels, relaunch Photoshop to ensure the change becomes effective.

  • Image changing after merge or flattening. How can I troubleshoot?

It happened on rare occasions before but recently I had the need to reset PS to it's default settings and it's happening with greater frequency. I'll make adjustments and when I try to shrink the file by merging or flattening the color profile or luminance will change. Often not a lot, but enough to notice.
My work around was to make a stamp copy and save that, but it sometimes doesn't work.
Can anyone suggest the settings I need to check to make everything seamless? Are there any color profiles that might change in the conversion I can check? I'm most often working in RGB in 16 or 8 bit mode. It's most often adjustments to levels or curves that don't take, but sometimes filters, too.
Here's an example of my workflow with two pics. The difference is subtle but it's annoying.
Filter sky out of photo, create mask to turn sky uniform white.
Command E to merge the mask with the photo.
    Create Smart Object (from photo)
    Apply cutout filter. Apply notebook.
Duplicate the SO with adjustments three times.
Use Lasso to select a piece (flag) and copy to its own layer.
Set that layer on top of the stack.
Set the filter for all three layers to multiply.
The texture from the filter Notebook fails every time I merge, flatten, or send back to LR and the color comes out lighter. Here's an example from this piece.https://flic.kr/p/r6A1Zd (what I want) https://flic.kr/p/qc5QTD (not what I want).

Thank you for the response. I did read it right after you posted it but waited until I had yet another chance to try it out. Both times, neither solution worked.
For whatever reason PS is showing me different images when I have my layers open from when I consolidate them -- no matter how I consolidate them. It doesn't happen every time and I can't identify a pattern except that it most frequently happens if I use the filters in the gallery. Also, it seems to not be applying color adjustments.
If I zoom the image to 100% the before and after is always different. If I save it to disk in .psd or .tiff I still get a different image. When I send it to LR I have a different image from what I've been working on. It's frustrating. It can happen in RGB, LAB, or CMYK. I'm going to try reinstalling PS to see if that makes a difference, but assuming it doesn't I somehow need to make PS show me what I'm working on. Do you know what settings affect the image preview, the version I see while I'm working on screen?
FYI, I'm using a 2013 iMac, 36GB RAM allocating PS with 90% of the memory.

  • Changes in Adjustment Layers in 8

It seems to me that the use of adjustment layers in version 8 has changed and not to the better.  When working with an adjustment layer, it used to be possible to decide if you liked the effect before accepting the adjustment.  One simply clicked "OK" to apply the adjustment.
In version 8 any adjustment that is made is automatically applied to the image.  If one is dissatisfied, it is necessary to delete the layer and start over.
Am I right or is there a "work around" that I haven't found.
    Mary Lou

I find that the adjustment layers are more useful in v.8, when combined with other tools.  Deleting them, and location of palette on screen, have changed as has been pointed out. However on can build on a basic adjustment layer with presets. Try this:
Make a selection with the selection brush, lasso, or magic wand
Add an adjustment layer, e.g. levels, without any change
Access the smart brush, and one of its presets. If the selection in step #1 is a sky in the picture, the preset "sunset" (nature>sunset) can be applied to get a sunset effect. As always, adjust blending mode and opacity. Note that the name of the adjustment layer has changed as well!

  • How to change the default name of new adjustment layers? (and other Q's)

How do I change the default name of new adjustment layers?
How can I make it so that adjustment layers don't come with a mask when I create them (unless I have a selection active)?
Why isn't the Shadows/Highlights functionality an adjustment layer? It's accessable under "adjustments" but you can't use it non-destructive
Where can I find documentation on Photoshop's API? (I want o make tools for it - javascript)

Forgive me for not looking into your Maya-specific links, but one can automate Photoshop using JavaScript indeed (on Windows also VB, on Mac also AppleScript).
Not everything can be automated naturally, but a lot – and it can really speed up many tasks; and with the »small« repetitive ones like saving copies off of files etc. combining Scripts with Configurator Panels can be especially convenient.
There is a Scripting Forum over at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_scripting
As for plugins: it's something I would like to learn some day (I guess you would have to go with Flash and AS3 for making actual plugins)
I think you might also have to learn C++ or C.
There is Forum the contributors to which might be able to give you pointers if you get to that.

  • How do I save a stack of adjustment layers that I want to then apply instantly to another image  ?

Can anyone help with the following Photoshop question please ?
I've been working on a 16bit image in PS CC on my Mac that has a stack of approximately 15 Adjustment Layers (AL's) which has taken a fair amount of work to put together and then saved as an unflattened PSD. The AL's consist of Curves, Selective Colour, Hue & Sat, Vibrance, Col Bal and Photo Filters with a variety of Masks. All AL's have been renamed with their own unique names.
    My question is:
How do I save this stack of 15 AL's, as I want apply them to other similar images that where shot during a motor drive burst either side of the image mentioned above ?
I know I can achieve exactly what I want by dragging all 15 AL's from the original image on to newly opened individual images.
Although this method works absolutely perfectly and is instant I want to be able to somehow apply these AL's in an instantaneous automated way to enable me to deal with the large numbers of images that I want to apply this to.
It appears to be the case that it isn't possible to simply select the complete stack of AL's from the original image, copy them and then paste them into a new image ! If this was possible I would simply create a simple action to deal with it.
I know already that I can create an action to deal with this now, however that entails laboriously retracing what I did to the original image by saving presets to the many AL's, then reloading them, putting them in the correct order and finally renaming all of the AL's but as you'll appreciate it's a fairly long drawn out process which would take forever.
I also need a method which has instant built in flexibility for when I tweak some of the AL's settings. At this point I wouldn't want to then have to go through the whole process of re-writing an involved action.
I hope the above makes some sense to you all and that you can understand what I want to do.
I've briefly looked over the Adobe forum where many people have been trying to find unsuccessfully the answer to this question for many years. If anyone has some sort of workaround for this I would very much appreciate hearing from you.
    Thanks

If the grayscale looks ok on screen, you are probably not setting up your print correctly. What OS? What printer?
