Help windows always foremost

I use Help frequently, particularly with a new system but also with applications. In Leopard the Help window is always on top. Often I find myself in the position of wishing to keep the Help file available but have an application window come to the front to work in the app. While the window of said app will become active the Help window always floats on top. I find it very annoying.
Is there a preference to change that behavior? A hack?
thanks

I too think this behavior is goofy in the extreme. You have the Help window open so you can work back and forth between Help and whatever you are doing: if the Help window is always on top you can't see what you are trying to do. What were they thinking? I was unable to find any way to fix this, although there might be such a way by modifying a plist somewhere and tell it to turn off always frontmost. Afraid I'm not enough of a hacker to know how one would go about this. Let's hope somewhere there is such a hacker who is annoyed enough to do it. You can't even hide the thing, it is always frontmost and will not hide, the best you can do is minimize it to the Dock. Sent feedback to Apple about this:

At the moment that's best we can do.

  • Mac Help windows always on top

Is there a way to turn off the Mac Help windows from always appearing on top of all other windows opened?
I thought there was an option to turn this off somewhere but I can't remember where. I checked all my settings in Cocktail and System Preferences but no such luck.

Previous version had save all tabs before shutting down, which helped a lot if u open same windows always, but this is not there in the latest version I have upgraded recently.Request you to guide me if this can be accommodated in the new version.

Firefox now always stores the old session which you can access by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session".
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # Click the orange Firefox button, then select options to open the options window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • How can I open a URL from a Custom Button in a second help window?

I have a custom button, which currently opens a URL in a web
browser, using a redirect page. How can I change this so that it
opens in a second help window instead? If I understand some of the
posts I've read, it is possible by linking the button to a related
topics function but I've no idea how this is done.
As usual, your help is most appreciated. Thanks a lot.

    Hi, ecoulyn,
You need to make a topic file like the one below the target
    of the Jump button.
The onLoad function on the Body start-tag causes the Related
Topics command to fire when the topic file is loaded in the topic
pane. When specifying the file name of the topic to display in the
secondary window, you must always prepend it with the name of your
.chm file, followed by "::/". Otherwise, an error message appears
when the Jump button is clicked.

Opening a new browser window always puts a flv-file (0bytes of a youtube vid viewed earlier) on desktop. Firefox 18.02
viewed the yuotube vid yesterday. deleted all the flv-files on the desktop.
same thing today, a new window always puts the same empty file from yesterday.
    any suggestions?

You can check the home page setting:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: Home page
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • My windows always lose focus

recently my macbook cannot work well 'cause the windows always lose its focus. i canno find out what's wrong with my computer. i tried restart, clean the PRAM and even reinstall the os. but all did not work out.
please help me .  this problem is so annoying that i cannot type fluently and even cannot operate with a dropdown menu.

That could be the solution... but no luck..
Now, I´m running with stack: v6.01.03(D)
...and the problem is still there.
    *More background:*
I am using a SonyEricsson sync program, every morning I connect my mobile via this program. The program is set to autosync the first thing when it detecs the mobile via bluetooth. The laptop stays often in the it´s dock and when I leave it (with the mobile in my pocket) and come back, they find eachother again and the sync starts. This way I never need to start the sync by myself which I always forget otherwhise.
The problem is that my computer sometimes checks if my mobile is still there (I suspect), and each time it starts to use the internal bluetooth device, the focus of current window I´m using is lost, this is of course very annoing when I´m writing something etc. This occurs regardless of the result of the search, ie regardless of it finds the phone or not.
Is there any workaround without losing that my phone autoconnects with my computer and the sync starts?

  • Capture window always uses the wrong name-

Hello everyone, I'm having this problem… when I go to capture HDV footage the Capture Window always remembers the name of the LAST clip I captured, when I change it and do all my capturing I find out that all my clips (and with HDV that can be a lot) have still retained the wrong name (in the browser and on my scratch disk). I tried trashing preferences and it works for the first time and goes back to this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Also I am using someone else's computer which is a G4 (not my macbook listed below).

  • Finder Windows Always Locked - After Permission Change

    Hello.
I noticed that other users on my computer had access to some folders (those I created) within my home directory. I didn't want this to be the case so I set permissions for my home directory and did "Apply to all items" so that the permissions are now "Me - Read & Write" and "everyone - Write only (Drop Box)." I am an administrator on the computer.
Now, every time I do a "get info" on a folder I have to unlock it by typing in my password, whereas before the get info windows were unlocked. I'm not positive the permission change is what cased the locked Finder windows, but I think that is what caused it. Also, I tried unlocking the folder and then doing the "apply to enclosed items" but that did not help.
    Thanks for any help,
    KK

    1. Use the "apply to enclosed items" option with great care. Not all items in your home folder should have the same settings, & certainly you would not normally want everyone to be able to write to them all, even if they can't read what they put there!
    2. AFAIK, in Leopard the lock at the bottom of the Get Info window always is in the locked state when the window is first opened, regardless of who owns the item it shows. Generally, you only need to unlock it with an admin password to make sharing & permissions changes. If you own the file, you should be able to (for instance) add Spotlight comments or change the name without needing to unlock it. IOW, the lock is for the sharing & permissions section, not the entire window.

  • Windows "Always on Top"

I am trying to get a window to "always remain on top" or float above all windows, regardless of where I click. For example, if you zoom Itunes into a smaller window, it always floats above all windows. How do I do this with other windows? It helps when working on multiple applications to keep a source document in a window "always on top" and prevented from being hidden.

Thank you. That seemed to do the trick.
Is it possible that my panels in CS3 were always floating, allowing me to prevent them from being covered? I'm just thinking that it seems odd that panels could be covered at all. You loose a lot of editing abilities when one can't see them!

  • Files Window always displays in front

Since upgrading to CC (might have also been an issue in CS6, can't remember), the files window always displays as the top window. I like to have it fill a good portion of my monitor so that I can easily see the ftp file next to the local files and also view dates of files. If I want to work in a particular file I have open, I have to close out my sites window. More so, when I leave Dreamweaver open in the background and switch to another application, the files window will still display over top of everything else on my monitor.
Is there any way to change this behaviour or should it be reported as a bug. I am working on an iMac running Mountain Lion.

  • Must 'Help' Windows Stay on Top?

Is there a way to have the 'Help" window act as every other window? When I am reading through a 'Help' topic the window always stays on top of all the other open windows. But when I want to return to my application the "Help" screen never recedes.

That's one of the many items in the Leopard user interface that makes you wonder what in the world they were thinking, and if the project managers ever actually use their computers for anything other than to see if their project crashes something. You can change the behavior using Terminal.
defaults write com.apple.helpviewer NormalWindow -bool true
Just launch Terminal, copy and paste the above line, and press the Return button. I don't remember whether it was necessary to log out and back in for it take effect.

  • Help Window

Just got a new iMac 20 inch. Mac help window is blank when opened. Type in a keyword or question, nothing happens. Click on drop-down menu to get Tiger home in the Help Viewer, click on topics on the right, nothing happens. Fix?

R C-R wrote: ""When you open a help page while you are connected, Help Viewer checks to see if a newer page is available and makes sure you see the latest information.""That does not apply to the start page for Mac Help. Likewise, the list of help books one sees in Help Viewer's Home pop-up button and the Library menu are cached on your Mac: no Internet connection involved.
R C-R wrote: "...at least one real-world case..."One data point does not make a trend. As you say, you have no idea what caused it, only inferring a causal relationship. I'm surprised Level 1 AppleCare did not simply tell you to Archive and Install and have a nice day: that's their usual level of troubleshooting.
I can see only one set of conditions where you might get a blank or partially loaded page in Help Viewer due to Internet issues: you'd have to be loading a help page that is only distributed over the Internet. Compared to the probability of other causes for a blank window, this cause has near-zero probability for the following reasons:
    - There are very few pages like this in Mac Help and related help books, and they are relatively obscure, i.e. generally deep within help topics. One probably has a better chance of being struck by lightning than finding one of these at random when the other conditions were right. The pages themselves are never added to the help book that references them: they are only accessed via the Internet. However, the Mac Help main page is not one of them, nor is the list of help books as previously cited.
    - You'd also have to have a very dodgy Internet connection indeed since help pages, esp. those for Apple apps, such as in Mac Help, are incredibly small: on the order of 4KB or less, almost none have page-specific graphics. The logos displayed in help pages are included with the help book, so they're not downloaded, even if the page is delivered over the Internet. A dodgy help server could contribute to this, but you'd get the "not found" page from Help Viewer, equivalent to a 404 from a Web browser. Help Viewer is a scaled-down Web browser. Help books are written in a subset of HTML and CSS. Authors of help books perform some additional processing as part of creating the help book to build its index, which is what is searched when one searches for help in Help Viewer.
Again, this has zero probability for the Mac Help "home page" itself — it's on the Mac — and for the list of help books as in both cases those resources are local. You can get a blank window if your Mac Help help book is missing or corrupted, per my FAQ, but again that doesn't involve the Internet: that's a probelm with the Mac itself.
If it happens again, I'd recommend checking Console for additional clues. Help Viewer depends heavily on caching and that's always seemed to be its weak link. It's gotten better, but it's still an application with issues. Quite a few changes have been made to Help Viewer's architecture in both Panther and Tiger to take the Internet-related issues that occurred in Jaguar out of the equation.
    Good luck!

  • "Help" window stuck "top"

When I open Help from the Help menu, that window stays on top no matter what other other windows I click or even when I ctrl tab or ctrl `. It is very inconvenient to constantly have to drag it around and out of the way while I am learning the layout and features of the main window. It also doesn't help that Mainstage won't let me resize the main window and it's pane's the way I want so I can get at everything with out having to always drag sliders back and forth.

On the first point (the help window) I would just minimize it (click the yellow button) when you don't need it and then just click it again in the dock when you want it back.
As for the resize main window, try clicking the square box beneath the slider - it's a quick way of zooming in and out instead of using the slider every time.

  • What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window but in other cases, both the label and caption appear in the context help window?

I am trying to polish an application, and find that I cannot seem to reliably control which of the label or caption text appears in the context help window because I don't understand what rules are in place to determine which should appear. It seems like if I reate a named constant, then use it's right click menu command "Create Indicator" I get a control with only a Label (as long as I don't add a caption). This then appears in the context help window as the label name followed by the description text (after entering some description text). But if I add a caption, the label name is shown in bracket
s which is a 'feature' I would like to avoid, because I have certain controls where I would like to use a descriptive variable name on the block diagram side without using so much space on the front panel. It seems like there is no way to avoid showing the Label name in the context help for a control/indicator. Is this true?
I thought the purpose of having a seperate caption was to make the text that appears with a control programmatically controllable, but if that control is not extended to what appears in the context help window, it limits the usefulness of the caption and forces me to re-consider some Label names. However, the problem goes deeper than that because then even when I make the label and caption exactly the same, or if I delete (via a select caption text-backspace or select caption text- delete key .. sequence) the caption for a control, the label name in the context help window still appears in square brackets!
Can I have complete control over the context help fo
r a particular control (or has anyone found a third-party context help solution that functions compatibly with LabVIEW 7 in a built application that they will be so kind as to recommend?)
I have used LabVIEW for three years, and I am now using LabVIEW 7.0.

Sorry for that.. I was changing the text of my question and didn't read carefully enough in the preview stage. I wanted it to read "What determines whether the Label name and/or Caption appears in the context help window?"

  • How do you stop the help window from floating to the top?

Is there way to change the help window's behavior so that it acts like a normal window?
It takes so long to set up seeing the problem and the help at the same time, then go back to reading and then back again.
The floating to the top is a very unwellcome "Feature" and microsoft-like not Apple-like.

    hmslfi wrote:

That depends on your POV. Some may prefer the default behaviour, because it doesn't allow the help window to be hidden by the working window.
Also, keep in mind that you can use the Minimise (yellow) button in the window's title bar.
However, if you really want to change the default floating window, there is a preference you can change with the defaults command:
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer NormalWindow -bool true
Alternatively, you can enable Help Viewer's developer mode
$ defaults write com.apple.helpviewer DevMode -bool true
