I have a Multiple Select List. I want to loop through the values from the Select List and process them in a PL/SQL function body returning a SQL query. Currently, my code only returns the SQL SELECT results of one item in the select list. How do I change my code to make it return the results of all of the items in the select list? (I tested it and it is definitely picking up all the values in the select list).

First, I would be careful of introducing SQL Injection possibilities. Any time I see
'Select ... ' || :P123_FOO || ' ... '
I worry about sql injection. In your case you are converting :P50_SELECTED_INSTRUMENTS into selected_items and then selected_items into s. So when I see
'WHERE TO_CHAR(orig_geo_loc_sys) LIKE ''' || s ||'%'' '||
I think, "I could use sql Injection and hack this."
So, I would do some validation on :P50_SELECTED_INSTRUMENTS or some other method to avoid this.
I'm not certain I understand your query. Do you really intend to allow the user to select the beginning of a string and then find all rows that start with that string? Or, do you just want to let them find when it matches the string. This is one way if you want to do matching:

PL/SQL function body returning SQL query - ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error

I'm attempting to dynamically generate a rather large SQL query via the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" report region option. The SQL query generated will possibly be over 32K. When I execute my page, I sometimes receive the "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error" which points to a larger than 32K query that was generated. I've seen other posts in the forum related to this dynamic SQL size limitation issue, but they are older (pre-2010) and point to the 32K limit of the DNS (EXECUTE IMMEDIATE) and DBMS_SQL. I found this post (dynamic sql enhancements in 11g) which discusses 11g no longer having the 32K size limitation for generating dynamic SQL. Our environment is on 11gR2 and using ApEx 4.2.1. I do not know which dynamic SQL method -- DNS or DBMS_SQL -- ApEx 4.2.1 is using. Can someone clarify for me which dynamic SQL method ApEx uses to implement the "PL/SQL function body returning SQL query" option?
As a test, I created a page on apex.oracle.com with a report region with the following source:

The dbms_output section is there to be able to run this code in SQL*Plus and confirm the size of the SQL is indeed larger than 32K. When running this in SQL*Plus, the procedure is successful and produces a proper SQL statement which can be executed. When I put this into the report region on apex.oracle.com, I get the ORA-06502 error.
I can certainly implement a work-around for my issue by creating a 'Before Header' process on the page which populates an ApEx collection with the data I am returning and then the report can simply select from the collection, but according to documentation, the above 32K limitation should be resolved in 11g. Thoughts?

What setting do you use in your report properties - especially in Type and in Region Source?
If you have Type="SQL Query", then you should have a SELECT statement in the Region Source. Something like: SELECT .... FROM ... WHERE
According to the ERR-1101 error message, you have probably set Type to "SQL Query (PL/SQL function body returning SQL query)". In this situation APEX expects you to write a body of a PL/SQL function, that will generate the text of a SQL query that APEX should run. So it can be something like:

And for escaping - are you interested in escaping the LIKE wildcards, or the quotes?
For escaping the wildcards in LIKE function so that when the user enters % you will find a record with % and not all functions, look into the SQL Reference:

(You would than need to change the code of your function accordingly).
If you are interested in escaping the quotes, try to avoid concatenating the values entered by the user into the SQL. If you can, use bind variables instead - as I have in my example above. If you start concatenating the values into the text of SQL, you are open to SQLInjection - user can enter anything, even things that will break your SQL. If you really need to allow users to choose the operator, I would probably give them a separate combo for operators and a textfield for values, than you could check if the operator is one of the allowed ones and create the condition accordingly - and than still use bind variable for inserting the filtering value into the query.

Using Package to produce pl/sql function body returning sql query Report

I have existing code that we want to use in building reports in APEX. We are needing to modify it slightly to handle some new requirements, but would like to use them in reports based upon SQL query (pl/sql function body returning sql query) functionality.
Any suggestions as how to call these in an APEX report region?

I am also v new to Apex and you may have answered a question I was in search of. I, however, now have a couple more. First a bit of background-- Like in your situation, my college has a lot of existing code (400 +) that we need to get into Apex. The majority of this canned code contains one/both: 1) many lines, sometimes containing multiple select statements 2) imbedded create table & view statements (temp user owned). Up until reading your post, I was unable to figure out an easy way of getting this existing code into the product. Thanks. Now the questions, do you know how I would go about dealing with the create tables/views. I've read some posts on this forum which suggest temporary tables being unstable in this environment. Also, do you know if there's a size limitation when passing sql code via a function?
As you may/may not be able to tell, I'm a bit lost right now... so any info you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Conditional display using Pl/SQL function body returning a boolean

I am having issues with conditional display of a report.
I have to select lists: p50_facility and p50_supervisor.
I have entered the below pl/sql function body returning a boolean

The values for the lists will be null only until the first time the page is submitted. Thereafter, the value is likely to be '%null%'
You will need to do something like:

our query is so simple, we need to extract the month from the recording_date column.

Notes:
1-the query is correct and it was tested under Toad and SQL Plus.
2- we tried Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only) option but we get the same problem.

Using variables in PL/SQL function body returning SQL query

h4. okay so I have this procedure POSTCODE_TO_LAT_LNG_GM_API(postcode IN VARCHAR2, lat OUT NUMBER, p_long OUT NUMBER) to convert a postcode into lat/long values. I then need to add them to the returned SQL statement so I used the string concat operator || with to_char but it comes up with this error when I try to apply the changes: Query cannot be parsed within the Builder. Okay so did a little playing around and eventually got it to work, the SQL Command didn't help with the function FYI (maybe something to do with it testing SQL statements and not PL/SQL?).
My 1st problem was that one of my columns relied on an apex text box which isn't always filled in so the SQL Compiler didn't like that. To solve this I did an IF NOT NULL, ELSE statement.
My 2nd problem was after I did that i didn't have a value for Distance in the ELSE statement and so APEX didn't know weather or not to add a Distance column. I solved this by making the distance column NULL.
Here is my final working code:

Item null when using PL/SQL function body returning SQL query

I have an item P5_CUSTOMER_ID (text). Whatever be the value I enter in this text box, the PL/SQL seems to execute the ELSE condition. What am I missing? I am using 2.0 and 10g Oracle.

I forgot to mention that P5_CUSTOMER_ID value is printed in the report. See my Select statement). When I enter '10' in the text box, the SQL output prints it under the column heading 'NULL_NULL'. Since it recognizes the value, it should execute the IS NOT NULL condition, but it does not.

You are adding and removing a column from a report so it may help to have the extra on the end of the query.
Do you get an error? If so paste it in...
BUT - this I would put a condition on the column where ':P44_INCLUDE_SUMMARY_FIELD is not null '
Under he report's "Column Attributes" Select the column edit icon and it has a "Condition" breadcrumb.
Select "Value of Item in Expression 1 is Not Null" and put P44_INCLUDE_SUMMARY_FIELD in Expression 1 text area.
And I make it more readable like this when I do dynamic SQL:

Refresh PL/SQL Report Region (not Page) using Select List value

Hi,
I've got a report region based on a 'PL/SQL function body returning a SQL query'which gets generated on selecting a value from a Select list item, The Select List action is 'Redirect and Set value' but this causes the whole page to refresh rather than just the report region. I've tried to refresh the report only using a dynamic action on the Select List item (Action now reset to 'None') but now the report is not appearing on choosing from the List. Can anyone suggest a solution that will allow me to refresh this report without refreshing the page? I am using APEX 4.2.2 and the report syntax is as follows:

Using multiple select lists in ADF

Hi,
I am trying to use a multiple select list in my JSP page, and have a method in the ApplicationModule be called when the Struts action is called. I am following the example ADF tutorials, where the method is added to the ApplicationModule class, then dragged onto the Stuts Flow diagram (to associate it with an action).
I am able to create a dyna form bean for the page that contains the multi select as a type "java.lang.String[]" (string array). I am able get that values that were selected in a normal action's "execute" method. For example:

However, I cannot seem to get the "multSelectList" values into a method in my Application Module class. The "multSelectList" is defined in my dynaFormBean as a String[] type. I am passing it in as an argument like the following....
public void setParams(String multSelectList[]) {
This results in the method not being called at all. I am not sure why. Does this have something to do with a String[] not being serializable??
However, if I just attempt to pass other types form items to the method, it works. For example:
public void setParams(String simpleCheckbox) {
Does anyone know how to use multiple select lists in conjunction with ADF?

my multSelectList looks something like this:

I got this working by changing the signature of the Application Module method to use ArrayList rather than String[], then you can marshal the Struts FormBean contents into an ArrayList to pass up.
To do this, subclass the DataAction by using "Go To Code" off of the context menu and then override the initializeMethodParameters() method:

    //Get the String Array from the Form Bean
    String[] selection = (String[])((DynaActionForm)actionContext.getActionForm()).get("multiSelect");

Problem to create a link with parameters using a PL/SQL function body

Hi everybody,
I need some help to create a link on a SELECT statement.
I have a region report with type "PL/SQL function body return SQL query".
I would like to use a link using HTML tag <a href>.
I know how to do the link, but I don't know to pass a parameters in <a href> statement.
Always I tried it doesn't work well.
My PL/SQL anonimous block is, (just with link) :

Your code is in a default value for an item, right?
You need to make sure :P33_YEAR is not null and handle the error in the PL/SQL if it is.
How is P33_YEAR populated? do you pass it in? check to see if it is making it there..

Script logic - how to use a selection variable within an allocation logic

I want to implement a simple top-down distribution to distribute values from a yearly budget (Y20xx.TOTAL) to a quarter budget (Q20xx.Q1, ... Q20xx.Q4) using the actuals of the previous year as reference.
If we hard code the members it works fine:
*RUNALLOCATION
*FACTOR=USING/TOTAL
*DIM ACCOUNT WHAT=ACC_NOT_ASSIGNED; WHERE=BAS(FIN); USING=<<<; TOTAL=<<<
*DIM TIME WHAT=Y2009.TOTAL; WHERE=BAS(Q2009.TOTAL); USING=BAS(Q2008.TOTAL); TOTAL=<<<
*DIM CATEGORY WHAT=SBO; WHERE=<<<; USING=ACTUAL; TOTAL=<<<
*ENDALLOCATION
Of course, we want to make this dynamic, using the values inputted in the selection screen of the package: time, entity and category.
So if we start with write the following logic, it does not work anymore:

Hi Dries,
Looks like you solved this, but if I can just add a small point -- when you use syntax like this:
*DIM ACCOUNT WHAT=ACC_NOT_ASSIGNED; WHERE=BAS(FIN);
*DIM TIME WHAT=Y2009.TOTAL; WHERE=BAS(Q2009.TOTAL);
each time the logic runs, it will scan through the dimension from the FIN and Q2009.TOTAL members, one level at a time, until it reaches the base members (where calc = 'n'). This may happen very quickly, if the dimension has very few levels, but could take a bit of extra time if it's a particularly deep dimension. (By which I mean many levels of hierarchy -- not some 1970's Pink Floyd musical reference.)
You may speed things up by using a member property instead of the BAS(xyz). Flag all the base members using a specific property value, and that way the logic engine can pick up the complete list of members in the WHERE clause, in a single query.
*DIM Account What=ACC_NOT_ASSIGNED; Where=[FloydProperty]="DarkSideOfTheMoon"; ...
This adds some maitenance work in the dimension, which may be problematic if your admins are changing it regularly (and will cause problems if they forget to update this particular property).
I can't predict how much time this will save you (maybe not much at all), but anyway I figure you'd want to know exactly what work you're asking the system to perform.

How to create Dynamic Selection List containg file names of a directory?

Hi,
I need a Selection List with a Dynamic List of Values containing all file names of a particular directory (can change through the time).
Basically, I need an Iterator over all file names in a directory, which could be used for Selection List in a JSF form.
This iterator has nothing to do with a database, but should get the names directly from the file system (java.io.File).
Can anybody tell me how to create such an iterator/selection list?
I am working with JDeveloper 10.1.3.2, JSF and Business Services.

Create a class like this:

            System.out.println(files);
return files;
Right click to create a data control from it.
Then you can drag the return value of the listFiles method to a page and drop as a table for example.
Also note that the Content Repository data control in 10.1.3.2 has the file system as a possible data source.
