IBooks won't open

Since a little before upgrading to Yosemite, I have been unable to open my iBooks app on my MacBook Pro. It will either open to the spinning beach ball forever until I force it to quit, or it opens then shuts down as soon as I try to tap a book to read.
Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions? I have run the Disk Utility for Permissions errors and the entire check but it continues to be a problem.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
Back up all data.
Quit iBooks if it's running. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved. Quit iBooks again before going on to the next step.
Step 1
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following item, if it exists, to the Trash:
          Cookies/com.apple.ibooks.cookies
Step 2
Delete this item in the same way:
          Preferences/com.apple.ibooks.plist
Step 3
Delete this item:
          Containers/com.apple.iBooksX
and move this one to the Desktop:
          Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService
Log out and log back in. The book library will be empty. Rebuild it by downloading your purchases from the iBooks Store and importing any other content you added. You may find the added content in the folder named "com.apple.BKAgentService" that you moved to the Desktop.

  • IBooks won't open my PDF files after I did a sync on computer.

I have an IPod Touch 4th generation. My IBooks won't open any of my PDF files after I did a sync on computer. I have updated all software, reset iPod from a previous backup, re sync with itunes on computer, and I have reset all settings, it still won't work. Any suggestions??

Please close all apps from multitasking.
Download the iPad manual from here http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1595/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
That should be a known good file from Apple. See if you can open that in iBooks.
If you can open the manual the other PDF files are unreadable/corrupt.
If you are unable to open the manual the issue is with iBooks. Delete iBooks and reinstall the app. Make sure you have  backup of your pdf files first.

  • E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download.

    E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download. It appears to have completely downloaded, but it won't open.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit iBooks and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If neither of these things help, delete the book and download it again. As long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought it with, you will not have to pay for it again.

  • Ibooks won't open any book

I have several Pdfs...  default was to open pdfs in acrobat and when I click within ibooks it opens in acrobat. I changed the default app for PDFs from acrobat to iBooks  and now it just hangs... it won't open any books at all.
I don't have this issue on iphone opening pdfs in iBooks
    any suggestions

If the book won't open then try deleting it from the bookshelf and re-download it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app and see if you can open that.

  • Ibooks won't open my pdf files

When i try to open pdf files from my browser ibooks starts to open them but the file blinks and disappears. I have to close the app and do this process again for about three times for the pdf to open. I have a lot of pdf files in my bookshelf and i am constantly adding new ones as i take classes. It bothers me to have to try so many times to open one when I have tons more to open.

  • Ibook won't open after download. instead, a different book opens

I am downloading .ibooks that I created in ibooks author onto my ipad. I am not using itunes, rather I am downloading from my server through the web and opening them in ibooks. however, when I try to add a new book i wrote, it opens a different book and the new book won't show up even though it is downloaded and prompted to "Open in Ibooks". help please.

that may happen when you created the book by duplicating a previous book you built (the preferred method is to save the previous book as a template, and create a new book based on that template). You have to delete the previous ibook from your iPad and then you can download and open the new one.

  • Downloaded iBook won't open

Downloaded James Bradley's "The Imperial Cruise," highly recommended btw.  Download to iTunes then iBook on my iPad, BUT the cover opens, screen flickers and goes back to home screen!  Where's my book?

Try deleting the book and then re-download it and see if it then opens (you can re-download ibooks for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).
If that doesn't work then have you tried closing the iBooks app completely and then re-opening it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with iBooks 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iBooks app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • IBooks won't open after adding a new PDF

This topic has been posted before and there are really no resolutions that I can see. I added a 2 page pdf to iBooks and it closes as soon as it encounters the pdf on the shelf. I've tried just about everything suggested. Finally I tried deleting it in finder and iTunes and then deleting iBooks and downloading a new iBooks but it just won't go away. I am SO happy that most of my stuff is on Kindle. I won't use iBooks for anything further. Kindle is great and always there for me. It's terrible all the posts and no help from Apple.

Hi there Eyes-only, I'll see if I can help you with this problem.
Try some basic trouble shooting steps first to see if they help the problem:
    • Multi tasking quit iBooks (double click the home button then slide ibooks away)
    • Perform a hard reset on your device (hold down the power button & home button until you see the apple logo)
If these fail to solve the problem, you're going to have to move onto some more time consuming steps.
    • Backup your device then entirely reset & erase it, then setup your device again restoring it from your backup via iCloud.
    • Failing this, attempt a software reset using iTunes
Let me know if any of these steps resolve the problem, or get you any further to a solution.
    Kind Regards.
    - Mike.

  • Some books in iBooks won't open after iOS 8.1.3

I have an iPad Air and today I just updated to iOS 8.1.3. When I go to open ebooks or pdfs in iBooks, only certain books will open. When I press on the icon after about 10 seconds a little the sunburst icon in the middle appears, cycles through and then disappears.  I've tried restarting my iPad several times but I'm still encountering the same problem.

I updated my iPad mini 2 this week to iOS 8.1.3.
Unfortunately, all PDFs and many EPUBs disappeared from iBooks.
Next i realized, that iBooks content is not saved in iCloud as part of the backup.
For me, iBooks with EPUB and PDFs was a main reasons to buy more Apple products. Loosing them during an update is such a disaster.
Hope, that Apple will solve this ASAP and spends a tiny fraction of the last quarter earnings into software quality ...

  • IBooks won't open epub file

Everything I've read tells me that if I transfer an epub book to ibooks on my ipod, it should open. But the library book download I put on my computer keeps saying it is an improper file. I tried using stanza and kobo apps and didn't have any luck. Any suggestions?
    Thanks -C

Ask your library.  Most ebooks like that have DRM and must be opened with a specific app, such as Bluefire Reader.

  • IBook won't open on iPad. Used to work now just a blank screen when opened

I have been buying and reading books on iPad for some time now. In last few days I can't view anything when I click on iBook icon. It open s and is a blank white screen. I've tried swiping, touching, pinching, and no response.
How can i fix so I can read books again?

Close the iBooks app and reboot the iPad.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app thumbnail to close it.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • IBooks won't open the first time

IiBooks will not open the first time  white screen only. It takes 3-4 tries to actually open it

You need to remove defaultPanel: -1 from your script:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var acc1 = new Spry.Widget.Accordion("Accordion1", { useFixedPanelHeights: false, defaultPanel: -1 }); </script>
This is near the bottom of your document.  You may as well delete this entire line, though, because you have a duplicate below that doesn't have the defaultPanel:-1 variable.

  • Downloaded files won't open, and mouse sometimes disappears

    Hey there,
I've just been having some rather minor problems with my iBook, and I thought maybe someone could help me out.
First of all, my iBook won't open a lot of applications that I download. It says that it can't find the application to open the programs with. I looked on a few of these forum threads, and it said to download the Stuffit program. I dowloaded the latest version, but when I went to open it, my computer gave me the same answer as it did for all those other apps- that it couldn't find the application to open it up with. I went back and downloaded the previous version of Stuffit, but that had the same result. How can I get files to open on my computer?
Also, sometimes while I'm in Safari, the mouse arrow completely disappears until I either scroll over a picture or click the back/forward arrows. Anyone have any ideas on why this happens? It doesn't really do anything bad, it's just annoying.
Well, thanks for reading this, and have a good day!

Ok, maybe this will lend some insight to the Safari cursor behavior.
I was on the Slashdots' main page. I had not experienced the issue since yesterday.
I proceded to follow this link, opening it in a new tab:
    http://www.crn.com/sections/breakingnews/dailyarchives.jhtml?articleId=188701694
When on that page, the cursor would start rapidly switching from a pointer to a hand. I clicked on the tab for Slashdot. Problem gone! I tabbed back to the CRN page in question and reloaded it. Problem is back. To clarify, I did not have to reload the page for the problem to persist, it was just something I tried.
I emptied the cache and reloaded. No change.
I would like to add that this in no way interferes with productivity when working in Safari, it's just really odd is all.
    Any ideas?

  • IBooks won't work in iOS 7.0

I downloaded ios 7.0 and iBooks won't open anything in the library.  The app itself opens but the books only flash and then they don't open.  Any thoughts?

Umpf! I've tried WIFI, I've tried 3G & LTE, I've opened and closed and opened and closed, and checked the settings-  it won't connect me to the iBooks Store, though my library is still intact/opens without issues. Also does displays "Top Authors" in iBooks Store but nothing else....
