IsReachable(int timeout) allways needs more than 1000ms to complete

I know that issues with pinging in Java have been discussed many times but after searching through numerous threads I haven't come up with a solution yet. In addition, my problem is specific.
I'm new to Java and I've heard that you can't do a real ping unless you use native code. Then I discovered the isReachable method which was supposed to solve most of the pinging issues.
My problem is that every time, on any host, this method needs >=1000ms to complete. In the following code, 'pinging' the localhost returns 1000ms in most cases, sometimes a bit more. But never under 1s.
public class NewMain {
    static InetAddress ip;
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
        ip= InetAddress.getByName("localhost");
        long start= System.currentTimeMillis();
        boolean reachable= ip.isReachable(2000);
        long end= System.currentTimeMillis();
        if (reachable)
            System.out.println(end-start+"ms");
}From what I could find on this matter, some people got correct results with similar methods (~0ms) while some others got results similar to mine (~1000ms). I didn't try to implement my own ping() method yet because isReachable sounds just right for my needs, only if it worked right.
I would appreciate if you could run this code and post the results along with your JDK version.
I am using JDK 1.6.0 .

Pardon my ignorance, but it is obvious that I don't
know much on the matter. Ping just always seemed like
a simplest and fastest way to determine internet
connection functionality. If I need to write a whole
Network Management System just to test Internet
connectivity... Well, it just doesn't sound right.Yes it is simple. Deceptively so.
Ping can return success even though the server is totally inoperable.
>
I would appreciate if you could give me a hint on how
to make a simple connection testing program without
using ping.If at all possible I wouldn't want to do it simply. No one cares if the equipement is up - what they care about is whether it is working or not.
For network infrastructue equipment such as routers, etc (including power supplies) SNMP almost always exists. Particularily these days I doubt you can buy newer equipment where that wouldn't be the case. Or they often have mini servers (such as http) as well.
If you are just testing standard servers then there are two ways
- Connective aware servers like htttp servers. For these you should make an actual request. The more complicated the better. For example do an http request that returns dynamic data rather than one that returns static data.
- Non-connective aware servers, then add a management API. This can be justified not just from the verification point but also from the remote admin management point of view. Implement a "are you ok" message. The server should either test something with this message or should be gathering information during process which it can return.

  • PS CC Says I need more than 512 Vram ...

I was using Photoshop last night just to prep a couple of photos for class submission (3 pictures, just reducing their size for web consumption), and I got the message stating that I needed more than 512 Megs of Vram, which was odd to me, as I have 1024 Dedicated available on my video card. I don't run a dual monitor setup any longer, but I do have an ASUS PBs278 that's running at 2560 X 1440. My current graphics card is an ATI Radeon 6800 HD, and my windows 7 system is running on 8 gigs of ram. Up till within the last week, CC has worked just fine, but the other day on boot, it took an unusually long time to get into the software. It eventually did, and I'm wondering if that was an update or some such that's now made the software decree that if it doesn't have the 512 it thinks it should have, the 3d functions won't happen. I don't know if it's a consequence of the larger quantity of pixels being pushed, or if it's the video card getting too old to support CC at such a high resolution now, but some help would be amazing.

Windows 7, 64 bit. I haven't been able to replicate the error, but I have the new drivers as well. I hope this just ends up being a fluke.

Hi, I use licensed Adobe Connect. Earlier in the meeting could involve up to 100 people. Now only 25. How, using Adobe Connect can increase the number of participants in the meeting? I need more than 25 people.
    Thanks for your help.

The purchasing option through adobe.com only allows up to 25 attendees. If you need more than that, you will need to purchase through a reseller. You can find one that is able to sell in your part of the world, here: Adobe Connect Partners. Just reach out to one of the Global Partners.

  • I need more than the maximum allowed 30 profiles - how do I change this?

I need more than the maximum allowed 30 profiles - how do I change this? Once I reach 30 profiles and I try to add one - it just deletes one automatically thus only allowing a maximum of 30. Please help.

You are talking about 30 Firefox Profiles on the same Windows Logon User Account?
I never saw that as a limit myself. I had 53 Profiles at one time, although I haven't done that since Firefox 3.0. It was causing an extended launch time and I started using "remote" Profiles that weren't controlled by the Profile Manager and weren't in the '''profiles.ini''' file; launched by command line. Like this in the Target line for the desktop shortcut: <br />
    ''' "C:\Program Files\Firefox_4.0_zip\firefox.exe" -Profile D:\Mozilla\Active-Profiles\4.0_10-15-10-N '''

My client has invested thousands of dollar in Flex Project, he definitely need more than 15 menu item.If this project failed , client will NEVER think to invest in flex.
Had I been  aware of this limitation before I would have thought some solution by now. This comes as a surprise to me at the last moment ,just fews days before Prod Date.
I cant also user java Scrip heck  as my Flex application is running inside Dot net Container , I do not access to the luxury of java script
Pls gents help me get rid of this ...PLEASE provide some ideas.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Natasha,
I got your point  but as for as I  know grouping like Quality is not possibel in Flax Context menu. I also cant go for window style menu(file, edit) because I need them to be displyed on DataGrid right clk . I am designing a trade datagrid where in trader can see all trades and he can approve/reject etc by just right clk and  selcting proper menu item form Context Menu.
In case of window style (acrobat.com) menu trader will have to reach to  menu instead of  getting all options on mouse right clk
I will have to think other alternative wich provides same ease as cotext menu.(God knows what is that )

  • Need more than 90 minutes of continual video

,Need more than 90 minutes of continual video? Hi all,
I'm using the Vado HD [first gen] as a "hidden cam" type of thing for a play that I am filming. I have 2 normal cameras set out in the audience, but I want to mount the Vado HD above the stage for a bird's eye view of a sword fight scene that I can cut to when editing footage. The problem is that the fight scene happens near the end of the play and there are no intermissions.
Since the filesystem used on the Vado HD is FAT and not NTFS or HFS+, I run into the 4GB limit and the camera simply puts itself to sleep about 45 minutes into recording even though there is more space on the dri've and the battery is fine.
Can I reformat the Vado HD with HFS+ or NTFS? [i use a Mac but can run windows via VMware Fusion if need be]. Is there any way to squeeze 90 minutes of video in one file on this camera? If I reformat the camera, will it mess it up? [i don't use any of the apps that were installed on the camera - i moved them from the vid camera to my laptop actually, so i don't care about losing anything valuable on the vid camera].
Thanks for any tips you might have!
    /vjl/

Could the reason be that you are capturing to an FAT32 format hard drive and it is only allowing you a limited maximum file size? Not sure but I think it is 4GB which would equate to 1/3 of a DV 13GB hour ...or about 20 minutes.
If that is correct, and you should be able to tell because the capture window will display the file size limit as space available during capture, you could do one of two things:
    * reformat the drive as NTFS which removes the file size limitation (I have just done this on an external drive for exactly the same reason), but do look up online instructions for this and do it carefully.
    * if the material is not long continuous shots of over 20 minutes, switch on Scene Detect during capture; it's wise to cut material up into smaller chunks in any case as huge files become very unwieldy and handling them could slow your machine right down.

  • Why do we need more than one retained earnings accounts & what is the use?

    Hi FI Experts,
Why do we need more than one retained earnings accounts, what is the precise use of two?
I know the retained earnings account is used to carry forward the balances during the year end to the balance sheet and there by making the p&L A/cs balances as zero.
I guess the second one is used for different valueations for example  as depreciation accounts for different valuations will have different retained earnings accounts.
Kindly correct me if I am wrong and eloborate on the use having more than one retained earnings accounts.
    with regards
    Ramesh Y

    Hi,
Well, separate retained earnings accounts are used for parallel financial reporting, it means when you need to report in accordance with, for example, local GAAP and IFRS or US GAAP at the same time. Several retained earnings accounts  are necessary when the company chooses account based approach for parallel reporting. (GL accounts are broken down into several groups, for example you use different accounts for IFRS valuation, for local GAAP and they are also shared accounts common for both principles.)

  • Business graphics need more than one category

    Dear All,
We have a issue for business graphics need more than one category about web dynpro abap.
       Our data:
       plant   month   qty
      1000   201101  10
      1000   201102  30
      2000   201101  30
      2000  201103   40
Now we need one category for "plant" and other category  for "month", Data is qty.

    Hello Bill,
could you explain bit more about your requirement? How would you like the graph to be renderded with two categories. Can't you club Plant and Month into one single category (1000-201101) and display it?

  • Firefox is the only browser that need more than 700 ms accesstime, when others need only 10! Why is that???

I have tested Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Firefox is using between 500-1100 ms accesstime, using Bredbandskollen.se, while the other two only uses around 10 ms!

First of all, thank you for your response.
Below you can find the answers to your questions:
    1) YES, I am using version 4, build 0024.00. Forgot to mention that I use Windows 7 64-bit and Firefox 11 (I don't use Chrome or IE)
    2) I cannot confirm that, because the problem doesn't appear every time. For example, today EVERYTHING works OK! I haven't change anything or done something different, but since I boot my T410s, every site log in with ONLY one swipe (today even Yahoo for the first time). As I said, SOMETIMES PWM asks for one swipe, other for 2 and rarely for 3 swipes. But I think that when the problem appears, PWM need more than one fingerprint swipe every time I go to the website.
    3) The setting for "before logging me into a Web site or application..." is "Every time". As I said, I need this setting to be "Every time", as my notebook sometimes is being used by other persons.
It is really a stange problem and when it appears it is very annoying. Have you any other ideas about what it's going on?

  • Help - I need more than 1000 Notes of 4000 characters

The 4000 character limitation of Notes and the limitation of 1000 Notes and the length of time it takes to load in Notes make using iPod notes very limiting. I've experimented with a few other options which I explain below, BUT MY QUESTION IS does anyone have any other suggestions on how to work around the 4000 character limitation?
Here is what I have found to be alternative options:
Split your notes into 4000 character blocks using the split command (open Terminal and type "man split" to read about the command)
Install Linux on the iPod. This worked with my older iPod but there isn't a Linux for the newer iPod yet.
    Using Contacts "note"
Summary: Uses a manually created Contacts file to store text of up to 243,185 characters in length. If creating files manually requires special formatting for linebreaks. Compatible with music playback and iTunes sync.
Contacts are stored on the iPod according to the vCard standard. vCard stores contact entries in vcf files. A single vcf file can contain any number of vCard entries. The iPod firmware looks for the vcf files in the iPod Contacts folder. The Contacts folder can contain any number of vcf files and will load all of them into memory when viewing contacts.
Contacts synchronized with iTunes are stored in the iSync.vcf file.
You can paste your text content into an Address Book entry and sync it to the iPod via iTunes. There may be limits in the Address Book application regarding the amount of text it will allow.
Using any text editor you can create your own vcf files and place them into the Contacts folder as well. Using the org and note attributes in the vCard entry in a vcf file you can create a contact that can display up to 243185 characters of text. A sample vcf file with a single vCard entry would look like this:
    begin:vcard
    version:3.0
    org:Sample Note
note:You can use Contact notes to get around the 4k limitation of iPod notes. Doing so requires some changes in the syntax of the text however because the vCard format is fairly restrictive.\nFor one thing any line breaks must be converted to a backslash followed by lower case n.\nFor another many symbolic characters must be escaped by preceding them with a backslash.
    end:vcard
The "org" attribute names the contact, and the "note" attribute contains the text, up to 243,185 characters of text. While a vCard entry can only have a single note attribute, you can have any number of vCard entries in a single vcf file.
One requirement of this approach is that the text must be edited to a format compatible with the vCard standard. That means that all linebreaks in the text must be converted to a backslash "\" followed by "n", and any symbolic characters should be preceded with backslash.
The negatives of this approach are that linebreaks must be altered and the notes are mixed in with your contacts. But to the positive they are still viewable while music is playing, and they are left alone by the iTunes synchronization process.
This method does not interfere with listening to a song. This method is independent of synchronizing with iTunes.
    Using the Calendar "description"
Summary: Uses a manually created Calendar file or Calendar entries in iCal to store text of up to 20,600 characters in length per calendar event. If creating files manually requires special formatting for linebreaks. Compatible with music playback. NOT compatible with iTunes sync if using a manually created file.
The iPod supports the vCal standard for displaying calendar information. Version 1.0 of this standard uses vcs files; and version 2.0 of this standard uses ics files. Most calendar programs can export either vcs or ics files and there is plenty of information available online for how to convert data from a calendar application into one of these formats.
The iPod firmware will display the contents of vcs and ics fles that are located in the iPod Calendars folder.
Calendar events defined in the vCal standard have a description attribute. The iPod firmware displays the description attribute when displaying the calendar event. It is possible to create a calendar specifically for the purpose of storing text in description attributes. You could create a calendar in a calendar program such as iCal and sync it with the iPod via iTunes, or you could create your own calendar file manually. Unfortunately if you sync calendars using iTunes then iTunes will delete all files in the Calendars folder that it does not directly control, so maintaining any kind of external calendar file is not compatible with syncing calendars using iTunes.
The iPod can read both vcs and ics calendar files, but for creating your own you should use vcs because vcs doesn't have a line length limit while ics does and requires special line-wrapping. The iPod will display only the first 20600 characters of the event description.
A simple vcs file with a single fake event would look like this:
    BEGIN:VCALENDAR
    VERSION:1.0
    X-WR-CALNAME:Notes Calendar
    BEGIN:VEVENT
    DTSTART:20070201T220000Z
    DTEND:20070201T230000Z
    SUMMARY:Sample note
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:=0D=0ALine breaks need to be converted to an equal sign followed by 0D followed by another equals sign followed by 0A. There is no line length limit, so the text can be as long as you need. There may be a reasonable limit imposed by the iPod calendar interface due to scrolling.
    END:VEVENT
    END:VCALENDAR
Each Calendar in the file is demarcated by the BEGIN:VCALENDAR and END:VCALENDAR statements. The VERSION statement when set to 1.0 indicates a vcs file (2.0 should be used in an ics file). The X-WR-CALNAME statement can be used to indicate a name for the calendar. If no calendar name is specified the iPod uses "Other".
Each Calendar event is demarcated by the BEGIN:VEVENT and END:VEVENT statements. Each event requires start and end times (DTSTART and DTEND, respectively), a SUMMARY which is the event title, and the DESCRIPTION which is the text you wish to read. Linebreaks in the description text must be converted to "=0D=0A".
The negatives of this approach are that linebreaks must be altered and the notes are attached to specific dates in the calendar so to find them you would need to navigate to those dates. Of course you could put all notes on the same date, or use different dates or even different calendars (within the same vcs file or not) to organize them.
This method does not interfere with listening to a song. This method is NOT compatible with syncing Calendars with iTunes if you are using a manually created file.
    Using Music Lyrics
Summary: Uses the Lyrics section of fake songs to store text of up to 10,000 characters in length per song. Does not require special formatting of text. Incompatible with music playback. Requires the text to be stored in iTunes.
iTunes allows the lyrics of a song to be attached to the ID3 tags of the song and viewed on the iPod while the song is playing. Technically lyrics can be up to 256 MB in length, but the iPod will only display the first 10000 characters.
Using lyrics allows notes to be sorted into playlists just as songs are which could be helpful for organizing them. To attach lyrics though there must be a song as well. It is possible to create a very small MP3 that can be used just to attach lyrics to. The process for doing so is described in forum message 2331260, but the short story is:
    - In the iTunes main library window, select a track you want to chop up, and select "Get info". The track cannot be a protected AAC track such as those purchased from the Apple Music Store.
    - Go to the "Options" tab. Set "Start Time" and "Stop Time", corresponding to the start and finish of the chunk of song you want to chop out. Click "OK".
    - Right-click on the track again in the main library window and select "Convert selection to XXX". (The XXX will be whatever file format you happen to have set in your iTunes Importing preferences at the time.)
    - After a little while, iTunes will spit out a second, smaller copy of the track, containing just the music between the Start and Stop times you set in the original track. Rename the new track as you please. You can then use iTunes to paste the lyrics to this song clip.
The negatives of this approach are that it requires synchronization with iTunes, requires storage of the text on your computer as well as your iPod, requires the creation of fake songs in your Library, and cannot be used while a song is playing (unless the song you are listening to is the song that has the text you want to read in its lyrics).
Advantages are that this method does not require any editing of the text regarding linebreaks, and this method allows playlists to be used to organize the notes.
While all of these methods work, none of them are completely ideal. If Contacts could be stored in hierarchical folders then that method would be pretty good.
Are there any other alternatives that people have found to work well to work around this iPod limitation of 1000 max notes of 4000 max characters?
    Regards,
    Brendan

The iPod shuffle is a music player. The iPods with screens have always been more than that. If the iPod didn't have a calendar, contacts, and notes I wouldn't have considered buying one. Music playing is nice, but I certainly didn't want to carry around multiple devices needlessly. The iPod and a simple cell phone are enough. When the iPhone comes out maybe I'll be down to one device.
As for the Palm, having been a Newton user at the time I was never impressed with anything about Palm except its size. The same people who bought cheap PC's instead of Macs bought cheap Palms instead of Newtons. Quantity rather than quality won out.
Apple learned from that and made the iPod a good size to begin with, otherwise it might have suffered a similar fate.
The only PDA capability the iPod lacks is the ability to edit its content independently of the computer. That would be handy, but it turns out hasn't been a critical need for me. More often than not I need to look something up not change something while away from my office. There is a good side to this though, if I lost the iPod I would not have to worry a bit about losing any Contacts, Calendar events, or Music. Notes though, well that is a different matter, those I backup.
I guess one person's music player is another person's PDA.
    Regards

Well you need to understand the behavior of h-reap or what it's called now, FlexConnect. In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

  • Why do I need more than 1 disk on a NLE system?

This question is often asked and a lot of people still think they can get away with a single disk or maybe 2 disks for a video editing system.
It would be relatively easy to tell you that a SATA disk is half duplex, so traffic can go only one way at a time, either reading or writing, and the other traffic has to wait until the first data streams have completed, before the next direction gets full attention, but that is rather technical and may not appeal to many, so let me put it to you in another way.
Whatever you do during editng, there comes a moment when you have to export your final result, be that for the web, to BD or DVD, it does not matter, the only thing relevant is that you need to EXPORT your final results and that is where the disk(s) come into play.
Bill Gehrke and I have been testing this extensively and let me make my final argument here.
We have a very simple SD DV AVI timeline of three hours duration, no effects, no transitions, single track only. We exported that to SD DV AVI and wrote that file to disk. Simple, no calculations required, no effects, no transitions, no scaling, no frame blending, nothing to complicate matters further. The intent was only to show the impact of the disk setup on export times. It may not be relevant to your case, but it does show the impact of a good disk setup and as such translates to your EXPORT times equally.
We tested with the following disk configurations:
    Harm i7-3930K, (OC) 4.7, 64 GB, GTX 680, 3 x 7 Raid3 striped to Raid30
    BillG i7-980X, (OC) 4.4, 24 GB, GTX 680, 1 x 8 Raid0 15K SCSI disks
BillG i7-2600K, stock, 32 GB, GTX 660, single SSD, OCZ Vertex4
BillG i7-2600K, stock, 32 GB, GTX 660, single HDD, Seagate 7200.12
This is what we found after many test runs:
This clearly shows the impact of disk setup on export times.
    I rest my case.

The test is supposed to demonstrate "the impact of disk setup on export times" yet there are no changes or variations in any of the bench configurations?
What do you mean? Your major complaint about PPBM5 was the changes or variations in configurations, something taken out of the picture.
Why not test the most common configurations (2- or 3-drive RAID0) and vary the setup for each, e.g. break a 2-drive RAID0 and see how that impacts export times?
For the illiterate benchmark readers,  export times are linearly related to sustained write speeds, so breaking up a 2 disk raid0 into 2 single disks will almost double export times. Breaking up a 3 disk raid0 into individual disks will almost triple export times. And what both you and Jeff forget, is that benchmark tests have to be short in duration. It is easy to make a benchmark that takes at least 30 minutes on a very fast system, but cripples an average system and will take more than 24 hours. Not very feasible, right?
Also really curious about the alleged evil of SATA's single-duplex operation.  Any proof yet?
SATA is not single duplex, it is half duplex. Yes, when the timeline does not fit memory and has to be read from disk and then be written to disk the penalty in export times can get as high as 40-50%.
The point that Jeff and you seem to miss completely is that a single disk will be around 17 times slower than a fast disk setup in the best of circumstances and that will go up to around 30 times slower when fill rates increase. In this test it may not amount to much total time, what is 6 minutes, but with - as you like to put it - many short YouTube exports daily, it will add up quickly.
Writing a 25 GB ISO file to disk for later burning to BDR will be between 17 - 30 times slower on a single disk system than on a fast disk system. If you both want to tell me that is irrelevant, go ahead and make your opinion known,
export times are not relevant for editors... but I wonder how many would agree with you.

  • Need more than 10 ports forwarded...any way??

Is there a way to increase the number of port forwards allowed in theWRT54G?
We have 15 computers that need access to port 4899 in the RAdmin remote access. Is there something I can do to gain more than 10 ip addresses access to this port .... like a ip range?
    Thanks in advance.

No. Forwarding can be used only for 1 PC, in situation where you need to forward any particular traffic to particular terminal, such any servers. If you need to allow multiple Pc to access any particular traffic then you may trigger the port instead.

I sometimes uses my friend's laptop when in room.
but when I use the laptop, I always have to click numerous times before it follows the clicked link.
On facebook, google, yahoo.. just everything as long as it is a web page.
But it does not happened when I use my pc in the office. so it must be the laptop..
any setting needed? I tried to reinstall FF 3.6.15 and windows xp professional sp.2 but nothing solve the problem.
Like following the email confirmation link from this forum as I register, I need to open and close new tab more than 7x before it says 'email confirmed'.
    Please help...

It isn't, something has gone awry. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds to perform a forced shutdown. Then restart as normal. When you turn to the System Preferences, Users and Groups tab you will probably find that the account was deleted. But it may not be. If you chose the option to delete the user's folder, make sure that it is indeed deleted. It will probably be a good idea to start in recovery mode - restart holding the command R key - and use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive, just in case.
