Jre 1.4.2_08

Is there an install switch to turn cacheing off for the jvm? We have to turn off cacheing for about 600 users.....

What exactly are you referring to when you say "caching"? Caching of what?
Do you perchance mean the caching of jars by the java plugin for browsers (IE and FF)?

  • Any problems running a program compiled with SDK 1.4.2_14 with JRE 1.4.2_08

    Hi,
    Would there ever be a problem running a program compiled in Java 1.4.2_13 with JRE 1.4.2_08?
    Why or why not? No guesses please.
    Thanks

    No such hope. The alternative to testing is to review changes made to each version leading up to 14. This is spelled out in each version's Release Document. There are a lot of changes. Most will not affect your program. Each change is relatively well described, but your problem will be to decide if your program will be affected by the change.
    Or, do nothing, hope like hell that nothing breaks, and have an up-to-date copy of your resume.
    If someone came to me saying a program couldn't be tested, I'd have serious concerns for that person's future.

  • Applet Not loading in IE 6 & JRE 1.4.2_08

    Hi
    I am trying to run the applets in the demo folder of the JRE folder. The Applets are not running. I can see a blank rectangle scree instead of the applet. I have reinstalled the JRE, IE 6.0 and configured the browser to pick up the Java plugin. I have also configured the Java plugin in the control panel. I have also modified the PATH and CLASSPATH variables, so that they are pointing to correct JRE version. Still I am NOT able to run the applet in the browser. Can somebody throw some light on this asap ??
    Regards

    Clemens
    Thats the problem. Even when I clicked on the Sun Java Console in the IE Tools options, the console is NOT opening up. I am new to this ATI Card and FSAA nomiclature. Pl let me know what are they and how can I get them to install on my machine. I have tried installing the MS JVM, reinstalling the IE, reinstalling the JRE 1.4.2_08. But, NO LUCK !!!

    I've posted this a couple oif other places today as well, but essentially it may help
    I had the 'Error occured ..., VM' problem after installing 1.4.2_01 on Linux under slackware9.1.
    I found the resolution by running 'java -verbose' as root and as a user and comparing the output, as java ran fine for root.
    Turns out that for the user 'java -version' stopped after loading a couple of jars, and as root it didn't.
    These jars in the JAVA_HOME/jre/lib directory only had root read/write permissions. After changing these permissions to all read and root write it worked fine for the user (so far)
    The above may be of some help, but comparing the differences (especially permissions) in running it as root and user with -verbose may help.

    Hi,
    Note 1086971
    To install and launch MI Client on Windows Vista OS, install SUN JDK/JRE 1.5 Update 11 and higher.  This is because only this version of SUN J2SE supports Windows Vista OS.  For details please refer to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/system-configurations.html.
    I think I have to install this version of Java.

    If I use JRE 1.4.2_14, the situation improves.
    Any suggestions on where the problem might be?
    Thanks

    Hello, sorry to jump on this thread, but I am having a similar issue with version 1.4.2_08
    We have a site that checks the current version of java before trying to load an applet, and if the version is not 1.4.2-08 or higher it prompts them to install...
    j2re-1_4_2_08-windows-i586-p.exe
    I am having an issue on a few different computers where even after they install and reboot, it prompts them to install again.
    on the one I am currently working on, they have win98 IE6
    the advanced tab of internet options has selections for MS JIT Compiler, and sun java 1.5 but not 1.4.2_08
    none of these are checked currently...
    This customer had installed 1.4.2_08 from our site, and it dodnt work, so they installed 1.5 from the java website.
    I had them Uninstall everything that said java from add/remove programs (J2SE 5.0 and JRE 1.4.2_08), reboot, and when we came back to the site, it prompted to install again, so we did, only this time the installer prompted to "modify" or "remove"
    We tried Modify first, and rebooted, cand it didnt work, so we tried remove, reboot, and reinstalled again (this time it didnt have the modify option) but the site still wont pass the version check.
    at this point, the internet options still have options for Sun Java 1.5 (which isnt currently installed) and MS JIT Compiler (both unchecked)
    Our diagnostics site reports thier version of java as MS 1.1 (IE isnt even trying to load the Sun Java apparently)
    If this is the same issue, hopefully this will help us both fix our issues, if you dont think this is the same issue, lemme know and ill post in a new topic.
    thanks in advanced for your help.

  • JRE 1.4.2_06 installs each time

    We are having an issue with JRE 1.4.2_06 on a particular application that we run at a clients site. The client will enter the application and will automatically get a prompt to install Java, even though the correct JRE is installed and works if the install is cancelled.
    I have tried the following:
    - uninstalled the java engine and installed the version on the website.
    - Tried to install the new version of JRE after uninstalling again.
    No matter what i try it always wants to reinstall. Is there a way to disable this, or get it to detect that the correct version is installed. Please Help. Thanks.

  • Jre acting weird

    Hi. I am having problems with my jre. I first noticed it when i could not run any applets (throught IE or as separate application through my own code). The applet just freezes up itself of IE if initiated through IE. I use jre 1.4.2_08 on windows 2000 (on a dell precision 220).
    I havem ade sure the jre stuff is enabled through the browser (ths stuff sun's site says). I tried enabling it through the control panel too.sure enough the java coffee cup is there, but i just can't get the console to open up regardless of how many times i click on it. so i think this 'not opening' may give a good clue to what the problem is to some experienced guys out there. I can't see the applet at
    www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml so something aure is wrong with my jre but can't figure out what. I had jre 1.4.2_07 before which i removed and installed 1.4.2_08 but the problem persists.
    Hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks,
    Vin

    I think I may have the same problem, I posted it earlier.

  • Older version of JRE doesn't start when specifically called by a page/site

    I have a page/site that I use which is specifically trying to call JRE 1.4.2_08 (var JREVERSION = "1,4,2,8"; is the line in the page doing the java call). However version 1.6.0_03-b05 is the one that keeps loading. This is causing features of the page/site from working correctly as it requires the 4.2_08 version specifically to work.
    Currently the system in question has windows XP running IE 6 sp2 with Java versions 1.4.2_08, 5.0 and the 6 update 3 all showing as installed in add/remove programs. Options such as disabling the 6.0 applet from IE's advanced options and disabling the vrs 5.0 and 6.0 objects in java control panel have not resolved the issue.
    Ideas/suggestions are welcome =)

  • Default page size for printing

    Is there a way to configure (i.e., specify non-programatically) the default page size to use when printing in Java? We have several JREs installed on a single Solaris machine. It seems that all but the one that came installed with the OS defaults to a an ISO-A4 page size.
    I wrote a test program (see end of post) and compiled using a 1.2.2 JDK. Here are some results:
    $ /usr/java/bin/java -cp . PrintPageFormat
    Java version: 1.2.2
    Page size: 612.0 x 792.0 pts
    $ /opt/java-packages/jre-1.4.0_04-solaris-i586/bin/java -cp . PrintPageFormat
    Java version: 1.4.0_04
    Page size: 595.0 x 842.0 pts
    $ /opt/java-packages/jre-1.4.2_08-solaris-i586/bin/java -cp . PrintPageFormat
    Java version: 1.4.2_08
    Page size: 595.0 x 842.0 pts
    $ /opt/jre-1.5.0_04-solaris-i586/bin/java -cp . PrintPageFormat
    Java version: 1.5.0_04
    Page size: 595.2755813598633 x 841.8897399902344 pts
    I've searched the Internet, but cannot find how to go about setting the default page size for a JRE. I've opened a ticket with Sun, and was told you can't do this other than programatically. It seems unreasonable that I would have to recompile my existing applications just to get them to work correctly under newer JREs. Is Sun's response to my ticket correct???
    Thanks in advance!

    ============================================================
    import java.awt.print.*;
      public class PrintPageFormat
          public static void main(String[] args)
              PrinterJob pj = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
              PageFormat pf = pj.defaultPage();
              double w = pf.getWidth();
              double h = pf.getHeight();
              String version = System.getProperty("java.version");
              System.out.println("    Java version: " + version);
              System.out.println("    Page size: " + w + " x " + h + " pts");
      }

    This problem was fixed by setting the locale variable LC_CTYPE to "C" or "en_US". The JREs 1.4.0 and above deployed on our Linux and Solaris environments all have the system property 'java.awt.printerjob' set to 'sun.print.PSPrinterJob'. This is a subclass of sun.print.RasterPrinterJob which in turn is a subclass of java.awt.print.PrinterJob. So, PSPrinterJob is the actual class of the PrinterJob returned by PrinterJob.getPrinterJob(). Looking at the code of RasterPrinterJob:
            /* Default to A4 paper outside North America.
            String defaultCountry = Locale.getDefault().getCountry();
            if (!Locale.getDefault().equals(Locale.ENGLISH) && // ie "C"
                defaultCountry != null &&
                !defaultCountry.equals(Locale.US.getCountry()) &&
                !defaultCountry.equals(Locale.CANADA.getCountry())) {
                double mmPerInch = 25.4;
                w = Math.rint((210.0*ptsPerInch)/mmPerInch);
                h = Math.rint((297.0*ptsPerInch)/mmPerInch);
                newPaper.setSize(w, h);
                newPaper.setImageableArea(ptsPerInch, ptsPerInch,
                                          w - 2.0*ptsPerInch,
                                          h - 2.0*ptsPerInch);
            }This should have been fairly obvious. Java's locale settings depend on the platform's locale settings (i.e., LC_ variables in this case), and then the default page size is determined (or actually altered) based on that.
    I'm kicking myself for not figuring this out much sooner. I would hope Sun is, too! (not me, themselves)

  • Force browser's Java version in a multi-version environment?

    Most of our machines run only JRE 1.4.2_08, but there is a sizable part of the population that have both 1.4.2_08 and 1.5 installed for compatibility reasons. Is there any way to configure the browser, the plugin, or the content of the web pages themselves in such a way that certain applications use one version, and certain applications use the other?
    Hope this is clear enough.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    After digging through the forum a bit, I have found that I can use the following switch in my shortcut to SQLDeveloper to achive this.
    C:\oracle\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper.exe -J-Dide.user.dir="%USERPROFILE%\.SQLdeveloper"
    I tried to modify the SQLDeveloper.boot but that did not seem to work correctly. The above mentioned switch updates the "c:\documents and settings\%username%\.sqrdeveloper" with all password related information and SQL history that was important to meet our security requirements. We updated the shortcut in the AllUsers profile and this seems to work globally.
    The only bad thing about this approach is that anyone can go into %AppData%\sqldeveloper.exe and run it without using the shortcuts. This would bypass the security precaution.
    Is there a better way to approach this?

  • JSObject binding bug?

    Within a web page, when setting directly a Javascript object to invoke one of its method from Java, if this method calls a Java method the result depends on the browser used :
    . IE : hangs, I must kill it.
    . Firefox : do not invoke the Javascript method.
    If, instead of setting directly the Javascript object, I use his name and get a reference on it with JSObject.getWindow(...).getMeber(...), then it is running well on both browsers.
    If you test with the code below, you might have as a result a web page with two buttons :
    [By name] and [By reference]
    a click on [By name] would popup a small window with "foo" displayed.
    a click on [By reference] would normally behave the same but lead to results described previously.
    well, any feedback on this will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Ah, no, just don't bind. Just set the selectedItem using
    actionscript. then, if necessary, you can also set the
    selectedIndex="-1".
    I suppose you could edit the ComboBox class if you reall want
    to.

  • How to Upgrade Previous versions of J2RE with Latest Version

    Hi,
    I want to distribute latest version of j2re over network thru SMS or GPO in AD Env. my prob. is i am unable to upgrade (overswite) the previous version with the new version. is there any way to do so?
    also the vulnerabilities reported in jre 1.4.2_05 & 06 which is resolved in jre 1.4.2_10 so if i have multiple installation in my system then is the system protected against vulnerability or not ? I beleive there can be more then one jre version on the system.
    Can anybody answer my question plz.

    Thanks a Lot ChuckBing for your early reply on this.
    but my question remains the same.
    Look below for further information.
    JRE 1.4.2_05
    Vulnerability: A vulnerability in the Java Plug-in may allow an untrusted applet to escalate privileges, through JavaScript calling into Java code, including reading and writing files with the privileges of the user running the applet.
    Source: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-57591-1Remarks : Vulnerability applicable to SDK and JRE 1.4.2_05 and earlier, all 1.4.1 and 1.4.0 releases, and 1.3.1_12 and earlier
    Fix : SDK and JRE 1.4.2_06 and later
    JRE 1.4.2_06
    Vulnerability: Seven (7) vulnerabilities with the use of "reflection" APIs in the Java Runtime Environment may independently allow an untrusted applet to elevate its privileges. For example an applet may grant itself permissions to read and write local files or execute local applications that are accessible to the user running the untrusted applet.
    Source: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-102171-1
    Remarks: Vulnerability applicable to SDK and JRE 1.4.2_08 and earlier
    Fix: SDK and JRE 1.4.2_09 and later (which include the 1.4.2_10)
    Question1:
    Is the system still vulnerable if we have 05,06...installed on the macine or its mandatory to uninstall previous version and install the latest one ?
    Question2:
    If yes is the answer for Quest. 1 then can we automate the upgrade for installing new version which will install the old version first ?
    awaiting replies....!

  • JSP problem when running Tomcat in Eclipse

    Hello,
    Eclipse newbie here.
    I just started using Eclipse and I have installed the Tomcat plugin. When I run Tomcat within Eclipse, http://localhost:8080 works fine, but when I tried to access a JSP that I've created, I'm getting this error:
    HTTP Status 404 - /JSPDemo.jsp
    type Status report
    message /JSPDemo.jsp
    description The requested resource (/JSPDemo.jsp) is not available.
    Using Eclipse version 3.1.2
    Tomcat Plugin = sysdeo 3.1
    Tomcat version 5.0.28
    JDK + JRE = 1.4.2_08
    I was just following this tutorial:
    http://plato.acadiau.ca/courses/comp/dsilver/2513/EclipseAndTomcatTutorial/
    Thanks in advance.

    why not use Web Tools Project of Eclipse, it comes with all plugins necessary for J2EE and Web development
    http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/
    it's much easier to use

    Can you try this on the lastest 1.4.2 update release? If so I suggest putitng in a bug report. Be sure to include CPU information for the problem machines. Most crashes of this kind are native code stomping on memory but occasionally there are true compiler bugs that generate incorrect code. Try reproducing with -Xint, -client, -server to try and narrow down the problematic case.
