MacBook Pro (Late 2008) and Lion

Has anyone out there installed Lion on a MacBook Pro (Late 2008), 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM?
Want to know about performance issues if any?
Everything working okay?
No spinning balls?
Is the laptop usable?
Want to do my homework before making the leap to Lion.
Thanks!

Hi, i'm using the same machine as yours. This my specs:
MB470LL/A - Late 2008 MacbookPro 15"
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz
DDR3 1066 MHz PC3-8500 8GB RAM (2x4GB Corsair Chip)
EFI Firmware Update 1.8
No problem so far using OS X Lion 10.7.1
1. Time Machine problem: I'm never using time machine for backup so i don't have any experience regarding time machine compatibility.
2. Yes this OSX using a lot of RAM. So i suggest you upgrade your RAM to 8GB (our machine is old enough for only 2GB of RAM). Corsair or Crucial chip will be great.
3. Like John Kitchen said, somehow OS X Lion barely resting up the system. There are always task consuming CPU running on the shade. Kernel activity has up almost twice of Snow Leopard's. But it didn't give me any trouble so far.
And here a little word of suggestion:
I don't know if this is only me, but i felt happier when i'm using Snow Leopard. I know you won't understand and somehow saying to yourself: "It will be different for me...". You just have to try it yourself.
You better listen to John Kitchen advise about making a boot copy of your system and install Lion there. Had i know this before i will be happier now.
So have a happy install and godspeed.

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 and Gaming

    Hello people!
I bought a late 2008 macbook pro with the 2.53 Processor, it is my first mac and everything works fine - in fact I am loving it . The thing is that from time to time (like weekends) I like to game - for long sessions. My mac has these temps while IDLE at windows (which I sadly need for gaming):
    Gpu : 72 degrees Celsius
    Core1: 70 degrees Celsius
    Core0: 72 degrees Celsius
    Core : 70 degrees Celsius
As reported from a monitoring program called speedfan
These go up to +15 - 20 degrees while gaming.. (with the fans literally screaming)
Isnt that dangerously hot? I bought this laptop for the reported quality and longevity and I dont want it to get ruined in 1 or 2 years :/ Furthermore , I bought it from Greece. The problem with that is that there is no Apple Greece and the authorised distributor for Apple here is a horrible company with even more horrible service. Trust me when I say I've heard tales of HORROR from people that have had a problem with their Mac..
All I want to know is if the Macbooks can withstand that kind of temperature and if not, if there are ANY solutions that may cool it off a bit.

I hope this answers you question.

  • Is having 2 SSD's in a MacBook Pro (Late 2008 and up) Bad?

Hello, I was wondering is it a bad idea to run a MacBook Pro (unibody) with 2 SSD's installed with a data doubler?  Would this cause stress or damage to the MacBook Pro in anyway?  Thank you.

The management is quite easy. You can move your Documents, Movies, Music, and Pictures folders to another drive and then replace them in the original location with aliases.
Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "alias." This will provide a help file on creating and using aliases.

  • MacBook Pro late 2008 no longer working with Airport Express

    Hi,
since a few days I have big problems with my MacBook Pro (late 2008) and my Airport Express. The MacBook can't find the airport express anymore, even not with the airport utility...
The Airport Express is correctly configured as my Ipod, Blackberry and Dell pc are connecting to it and do have internet access...
I can only manage the Airport Express when I'm directly connected to it with an ethernet cable.
My brother has an airport expreme, I tested it with my MacBook Pro and there it just works fine...
Can anyone help me? Has it something to do with an update for Mac OS X or the firmware from the Airport Express?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the response,
    1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
    2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
    3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
    And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x

  • MacBook Pro (late 2008) & Vista Biz 64bit

    Hi:
Just got a new Macbook Pro (late 2008) and wanted to know if Windows Vista 64bit will run under Boot Camp?
    Thanks,
    Marc

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 hasn't been updated, and yes it seems to work... with some minor issues (when or where are the latest BootCamp Apple setup services and drivers?) for new logicboard and chipset... so you will see errors and may have to do a "repair reinstall" but it works.

  • Macbook pro late 2008 battery problem

I have a macbook pro late 2008 and I've been experiencing problems with the battery. I have changed the battery two times till now and now it's telling me to service battery. I am not a heavy user and I always try to drain the battery twice a month. Can it be the power supply?
    I need help

    Hi there,
I seem to have the same problem. My battery indicator gives me no more than 2 1/2 hours of battery life.
I checked to see if my computer was set to better battery performance and it was.
Now initially I thought that this may because of my external display (ACD 23") and my LaCie rugged external HD, which takes power from the FW connector. But even when I disconnect both of them I still only get two and a half hours of battery life, even when I leave the computer alone to just sit there.
Now I'm guessing this isn't normal. It may take an software update to correct this. But if this doesn't get corrected this thing is useless to me. And I will no doubt return it.

Thanks again for your help Rod!
One of the first things I tried was different combinations of devices to see if it may have been the device just not powering up. The main device I use is an official Apple wired keyboard, because at home I connect my MBP to my monitor and use a separate keyboard and mouse. I have tried other devices too with the same result, they only work when the dock is connected. I have tried connecting my iPhone via USB cable, i have a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer flash drive, which only lights up if the dock is connected, and I have a 4 port USB hub with a power LED on it, which again only lights up when the dock is connected.
I looked in system profiler, and it says the USB ports are there, but doesn't recognise any devices plugged in, other than the dock. However, when the dock is plugged in, for example, it recognises the Apple keyboard in the other port.
I took two screen shots, one of system profiler without the dock plugged in (USB keyboard still plugged in but not showing up), and another of when I plugged the dock in.
    Without Dock:
    With Dock:
It might be worth pointing out that the HDD dock has two USB ports on it, which is what is highlighted in the second pic.
I have also tried rebooting the computer with devices already attached but with the same result again. I've tried booting it with the dock and the keyboard attached, with just the keyboard, with just the dock, but either way unless the dock is connected, nothing else will work via USB.
I just want to say thanks again Rod, it's very kind of you to spend your time trying to help me, and it is really appreciated!
I'm going to contact Apple support shortly and see if they can offer a solution, or see if I can send it in for repair, which I am reluctant to do seeing as it's my only computer
    Cheers!
    Gav

That does not work on model year older then 2010 and really doesn't work on any older then late 2011 models.
You will need a set of original system dvd disc thjat are always sypplied with every mac sold before Lion came out. Systems older then late release early 2011 models.
If you don't have them you kcan order a replacement set from apple by calling them. Have the serial number of you mac handy.

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2008) versus OSX Mountain Lion

    Kuzuzangpo:
I've been updating most OS updates on my Macbook Pro (Late 2008) via the App Store. The process has worked seamlessly so far. I love Apple. I wanted to ask if I should update to the Mountain Lion OS as well on my old Macbook? The App Store reviews state that it slows down the Macbook considerably. I am also thinking of getting the new Macbook Pro (with Retina Display) but want it in a 13". So far, there's only the 15" which - given my current Macbook and type of work now - is a bit too bulky to lug around. Any advice is most appreciated.
    Kadrinchey

I have already installed it from the mac app store, i open it from the launchpad but it does not open in a boot kind of mode, it only opens as if it's an app.

  • How can i Flash and restore the firmware ( EFI ) from a Macbook pro ( late 2008 , 5.1 ) ??

    How can i Flash and restore the firmware ( EFI ) from a Macbook pro ( late 2008 , 5.1 ) ??
    Please help me !!

The Seagate backup drive I bought doesn't support 10.5.8
The only reason I can see for that is it's formatted NTFS, which would likely be Read Only in 10.5.x, if you can reformat it MacOS extended, which would erase everything on it now, then that should work for your purposes.

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.
