Memory Leak in Preview.app when switching Display Profiles

I found a weird memory leak in Max OS X Preview.app, which manifests itself when Display profiles (color calbration) is change. I wonder if anyone else can reproduce my experience.
1. Open up "System Preferences" -> "Displays", switch to the "Color" tab. You'll need at least 2 available profiles in the list. (If you only have 1, you can create another using "Calibrate..." button to launch Display Calibration Assistant.
2. Open an image file in Preview.app.  The larger, the better. Zoom in full size to maximize the effect of the bug. I repro'ed easily with this image: http://www.donporter.net/NewSchool/Color/Examples/Printer%20Test%20file.jpg
3. Open up "Activity Monitor.app", and click on Preview to highlight it, so you can watch its memory usage.
4. Switch back to "Diplays" Preference Pane. Using the arrow keys, toggle up and down between two different Display profiles.
4a. At the same time, watch Preview's "Real Mem" in Activity Monitor, as well as the total "Active" memory.
5. Each time you switch profiles,  Preview consumes more Active/Real memory, about 25MB per switch in my case. This continues until all physical memory is consumed, and then (I presume) starts swapping virtual memory to disk.
6. Bring Preview to  foreground, and all the profile-induced memory usage is freed.
Weird, wild stuff.

Could it be possible that this is just the OS holding the memory for the app until another process requires it?  Do you find that the memory increase eventually causes the app to become unstable?
It might be best to open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com.  When adding the bug, please include any source code, project or installer that will help us reproduce the issue internally.  If you'd like to keep your code private, feel free to email it directly to [email protected]  Once entered, please post back with the URL so that others effected can add their comments and votes.

  • Preview.app will not display some PDF files

    Since upgrading Yosemite I have found that Preview.app will not display some PDF documents, the documents open but all the pages are blank. This is a big issue as my work involves reviewing documents that are all in the PDF format. Strangely some PDFs work properly but I haven't been able to determine any common factors among the documents that work versus those that don't work. The problem documents do open correctly in Adobe Acrobat Reader but Reader takes over viewing of PDF container fields I have in several important FileMaker Pro 13 databases. Acrobat in the FileMaker databases for me is just as much of a problem as not viewing PDFs in Preview.
    After searching the forums I followed suggestion in a post to try using version 7.0 of Preview.app (the version that worked under Mavericks) but that is also showing blank pages. I have noticed that the PDFs which open as blank pages also display that way in Finder and Spotlight previews. Could this mean that I have some kind of OS level issue here and not a Preview.app issue? Perhaps Finder and Spotlight use Preview.app to generate the preview.
    I have posted this in a bug report to Apple but in the meantime I would welcome any suggestions or workarounds to try.

    The built-in PDF renderer has trouble with that file. You might get better results with Adobe Reader.

  • Keep Preview playing when switching windows?

    Is there any possible way to keep Preview playing the file when switching windows? For example, pressing the space bar on .mp3 file begins playing it in Preview, however when switching windows, the preview pauses until you go back to the finder window. This is annoying when browsing .mp3's to play while doing other things. Any ideas?

    I think you mean QuickLook, not Preview. And no, QuickLook is not intended to work that way--it is a way to do just what its name says: provide a quick looksee at the files in an open Finder window.
    As for ideas: why not just open them in iTunes?
    If you don't want to add them to iTunes, you can put the folder with the mp3s into Column View, make sure the box for "show preview column" is checked in View Options, then click directly on the icon for the file in the preview column (as your mouse moves over the icon, you will see the stylish play button appear on top of the icon). It will continue to play no matter what else you are doing.

  • Image Memory Leaks in AIR app

    We are implementing an AIR application that loads thumbnails
    from the hard drive and uploads them to a remote server.
    When bringing in large images, for example, when importing
    five 2MB files into Image objects:
    Flex reports that it is using 55MB
    Windows reports using 220 Meg (viewing memory usage of
    adl.exe in task manager)
    After deletion of these image objects, the memory stays
    allocated!! It is released when the application is closed.
    Two issues I see:
    1. Huge memory usage for image objects (I understand that JPG
    files are exploded into BMPs). It limits our ability to load 10's
    or 100's of images.
    2. Bad Memory leak
    OTHER THINGS WE TRIED:
    1. Displaying images as inline html IMG tags.. Same memory
    usage!
    2. Taking a snapshot of the image and displaying that.
    Problem, used way to much CPU
    I hope these issues will be fixed before release time or we
    are hosed.
    PLATFORM: Windows XP Professional, service pack 2

    Hi
    Have you tried the FB3 profiler to investigate why memory is
    not getting deallocated?
    You can use the loitering objects panel to track the back
    references for the objects in memory. If you find that image object
    is not being referenced by anything else. Can you file a bug at
    http://bugs.adobe.com/flex
    with a small test case.
    Also as you know that jpg will be translated into bitmap. The
    amount of memory required will be determined by the pixels in the
    image. Each pixel will be 4K

  • Tracking down a memory leak in LV8.2 when you can't use the profiler

    I am working with this large application. I have satisfied myself that it does have a memory leak by watching the Window's Task Manager while using the app.
    My first preference is to use the Profiler. However when I press 'Start' on the profiler, it instantly crashes LV. It does not do this for all VIs. I have tried to find the offending VI as narrowly as possible, but a VI that crashes profiler on one machine doesn't on another, so I gave that path up.
    If someone knows of a thread about the profiler crashing, please point me that way.
    Failing that, what kind of tips are there for tracking this leak down?
    Thanks!

    Hiya,
    Don't know of anything that will crash the profiler right off-hand, but it never struck me as the most... ah, robust bit of code in LV.
    As far as pre-existing tools, you could try the memmon.llb that lives in the National Instruments/<labview>/examples folder.  It should show the memory load of each vi in memory, though it may require a little retooling to get things into a view that you like.
    If you're on Windows, there are a number of tricks you can play with the SysInternals (now Microsoft) tools.  This usually boils down to watching lower level accesses to the operating system for patterns that look suspicious.  Not a high yield path, but occasionally it works.
    For methods, I like divide and conquer.  The more portions you can eliminate as NOT having the problem, the fewer portions of your code you have left to look for problems in.
    Tracking down memory leaks can be very difficult, but most show up in the end.
    Good bug hunting!

  • Memory leak under GNU/Linux when using exec()

    Hi,
    We detected that our application was taking all the free memory of the computer when we were using intensively and periodically the method exec() to execute some commands of the OS. The OS of the computer is a GNU/Linux based OS.
    So, in order to do some monitoring we decided to wrote a simple program that called exec() infinite number of times, and using the profiler tool of Netbeans we saw a memory leak in the program because the number of surviving generations increased during all the execution time. The classes that have more surviving generations are java.lang.ref.Finalizer, java.io.FileDescriptor and byte[].
    We also decided to test this simple program using Windows, and in that OS we saw that the memory leak disappeared: the number of surviving generations was almost stable.
    I attach you the code of the program.
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.InputStream;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;
    public class testExec
        public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException, InterruptedException
            Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
            while (true)
                Process process = null;
                InputStream is = null;
                InputStreamReader isr = null;
                BufferedReader br = null;
                try
                    process = runtime.exec("ls");
                    //process = runtime.exec("cmd /c dir");
                    is = process.getInputStream();
                    isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
                    br = new BufferedReader(isr);
                    String line;
                    while ((line = br.readLine()) != null)
                        System.out.println(line);
                finally
                    process.waitFor();
                    if (is != null)
                        is.close();
                    if (isr != null)
                        isr.close();
                    if (br != null)
                        br.close();
                    if (process != null)
                        process.destroy();
    }¿Is anything wrong with the test program we wrote? (we know that is not usual to call infinite times the command ls/dir, but it's just a test)
    ¿Why do we have a memory leak in Linux but not in Windows?
    I will appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Joby,
    From our last profiling results, we haven't found yet a proper solution. We think that probably the problem is caused by the byte[]'s/FileInputStreams created by the class UNIXProcess that manage the stdin, stdout and stderr streams. It seems that these byte arrays cannot be removed correctly by the garbage collector and they become bigger and bigger, so at the end they took all the memory of the system.
    We downloaded the last version of OpenJDK 6 (build b19) and modified UNIXProcess.java.linux so when we call its method destroy(), we assign to null those streams. We did that because we wanted to indicate to the garbage collector that these objects could be removed, as we saw that the close() methods doesn't do anything on their implementation.
    public void destroy() {
         // There is a risk that pid will be recycled, causing us to
         // kill the wrong process!  So we only terminate processes
         // that appear to still be running.  Even with this check,
         // there is an unavoidable race condition here, but the window
         // is very small, and OSes try hard to not recycle pids too
         // soon, so this is quite safe.
         synchronized (this) {
             if (!hasExited)
              destroyProcess(pid);
            try {
                stdin_stream.close();
                stdout_stream.close();
                stderr_stream.close();
                // LINES WE ADDED
                stdin_stream = null;
                stdout_stream = null;
                stderr_stream = null;
            } catch (IOException e) {
                // ignore
                e.printStackTrace();
        }But this didn't work at all. We saw that we were able to execute for a long time our application and that the free memory of the system wasn't decreasing as before, but we did some profiling with this custom JVM and the test application and we still see more or less the same behaviour: lots of surviving generations, at some point increase of the used heap to the maximum allowed, and finally the crash of the test app.
    So sadly, we still don't have a solution for that problem. You could try to compile OpenJDK 6, modify it, and try it with your program to see if the last version works for you. Compiling OpenJDK 6 in Linux is quite easy: you just have to download the source and the binaries from here and configure your environment with something like this:
    export ANT_HOME=/opt/apache-ant-1.7.1/
    export ALT_BOOTDIR=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
    export ALT_OUTPUTDIR=/tmp/openjdk
    export ALT_BINARY_PLUGS_PATH=/opt/openjdk-binary-plugs/
    export ALT_JDK_IMPORT_PATH=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=
    export CLASSPATH=
    export JAVA_HOME=
    export LANG=C
    export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.3
    export CXX=/usr/bin/g++-4.3Hope it helps Joby :)
    Cheers.

  • Fixing Memory Leaks in AIR App?

    Hi Friends,
    I'm been facing this memory leaks issue in our app and this has taken enough of our time and resources and we are not being able to find a solution for it.
    I have identified the problem in the module where we primarily need memory related fixes which is - We are setting Repeater's recycleChildren() property to true/false based upon certain conditions which we cant change. Now when this property is set to false Repeater is supposed to be removing its last created objects from memory and creating fresh ones. In our case repeater is unable to delete those. When I managed to get their instances (using createdChildren()) and freed them in code I called System.gc() for releasing the memory back to OS. Now what is happening is that this approach works fine when I run the app from code but when I create its installer (from Installsheild) and formally out in on machines it does not work. I came to know the reason from following blogs:
    http://jvalentino.blogspot.com/2009/05/flex-memory-issue-3-garbage-collection.html
    http://gskinner.com/blog/archives/2006/06/as3_resource_ma.html
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/system/System.htm l#gc()
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/192373/force-garbage-collection-in-as3
    http://gskinner.com/blog/archives/2006/08/as3_resource_ma_2.html
    Guys, can anyone of you suggest what should I do here? This has become a delivery bottleneck and we need to give a fix where the memroy is released periodically and efficiently so that the end user's system does not hang.
    Please help.
    Shubhra

    Are you sure it doesn't ? Maybe flash does release memory but the OS leaves it assigned as described in the below comment from http://www.mikechambers.com/blog/2008/08/06/what-are-your-biggest-issues-with-adobe-air/co mment-page-3/#comment-26330
    "I just finished doing more experiments, I looks like the AIR app  does free the memory, but the OS leaves it assignned to the app process,  until other apps requiere that memory. So, looks like it is a natural  behaviour and the memory leak is not as terrible as I thougth."

  • Can I locate "memory leaks" to keep apps from crashing?

    Hello clever people,
    Since the iPhone 4s is still on the market, I assume that my 2 year old 4s should be able to work fine. However, I am constantly plagued by apps crashing and, most frustratingly, apps often fail to remain running in the background, even with one or no other apps running.
    I had a similar issue with my iPad2, just before it ran out of applecare, and the chap had me run through with sending anaylitcs to him, and his conclusion was that a few apps were causing 'memory leaks' - had me reset the iPad and reinstall everything. So I also did this on the iPhone, which did help, but it has not solved the issue. I have also removed most apps from the device, in a bid to locate the offending app.
    Searching on Google for "memory leak" only brings up info for developers, and nothing for someone who is actually using their phone and having issues. My usual scenario is going for a bike ride and running Strava, which then cuts out when I stop to take a picture - with no other apps running.
    Does anyone know how to solve the issue - return the phone to its 'as new' state, or locate the problem and remove it?
    Cheers,
    Tobias

    There are differenty types of, "resets" ..
    Have you tried the folloiwng ??
    Reset the device:
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    No data is lost due to a reset.
    Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • Preview.app Glitch throws Display Back to First Page

    OS X Yosemite v10.10.2; Preview.app v8.0
    I've discovered a very annoying glitch in Preview.app; in which when I select all pages after I showed thumbnails, and then mark all pages with [Command]+[A] and unmark a view pages by holding the Command Key and klicking some; the program throws me back to the very first page of the .pdf document. Anyone knows whether there's a fix to be made?
    –inbetween I click a page on the left panel with [cmd] held–>
    P.s.: Why isn't there community field for every OS X utilities like Preview.app? People might think I've spammed with this post.

    that is what im talking about. after i have tapped the apps icon and gone to the apps pages not the front/main pages, the pages cant be swiped continuously as they were on the s4. you start on page one, then 2 then 3 then 4 and instead of going back to page one it stops and to get back to page one you have to go in the other direction and go to page 3 then 2 then 1. on the s4 you could just keeep going 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 or 1, 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1,

  • Preview app doesn't display hyperlinks

    PDFs when opened in Apple's Preview App do not work with hyperlinks (including mailto:s). We've tried with various work flows from both windows apps, Apple's 'print pdf', Acrobat Pro. Other apps work fine: e.g. Adobe Reader, Safari.
    I'm surprised not to see more discussion about this, is it a well known issue?
    CM

    Hyperlinks in PDFs that I create in Adobe InDesign work fine in Preview, assuming they were actually created as hyperlinks (versus text strings even with link-like formatting).
    Some other apps try harder to interpret text strings as hyperlinks than Preview does.

  • Adobe Reader, MS Office window size changing when switching displays

    I have a current generation (mid 2012) MBP with Retina Display running ML 10.8.3. I also have a Dell U2413 monitor, confgured for
    1920x1200 resolution, connected via a Thunderbolt to Display Port cable that came with the monitor.
    When I switch displays, Adobe reader, Excel, and Powerpoint all have their window sizes change dramatically. Reader
    shrinks to just the status bar and is tucked in the very bottom left hand corner (it took me quite some time to even see it
    was there at all); Excel windows expand dramatically to be much larger than full screen, and Powerpoint windows shrink
    to about 1.5" square. Other windows (Mail, Chrome, Safari, iTunes) change or move slightly but are more or less OK.
    I know this problem is expected when switching to an external monitor with dramatically lower resolution (e.g. old In Focus
    projectors) but I don't believe it should happen with a hi-res monitor like the one I'm using.
    I have compared this behaviour with other users running same SW versions and external monitors with the same
    resoultion and they don't see this problem so I'm guessing there's some configuration option or low level setting
    that is messed up.
    These window size changes happen going both from internal to external and external to internal. Any ideas?

  • Memory Leak on General Block when using Java Script

    Hi,
    I have a web view, that runs a html within the html there is a javascript which has a third party object this object displays some data and grows dynamically every time I invoke this object to grow I see in Instrument monitor whole bunch of Generalblock-256 ( 256 Bytes ) memory leak, I was wondering how can I manage this memory, I know in java script if we assign null to an object java will release it, but it's already reported the leak before I assign the object to null.
    Is there any way I can use let's say by NSAutoReleasePool.
    Thanks.

    The Memory leak is pretty much gone, with new release of OS 2.2.1 as apple has done better memory management for safari.

  • Memory leaks in the app

    While doing memory leak profiling in an application, I came across leaks due to certain custom methods like readHeaderBytes or httpProtocolStart from CFNetwork, GSEventRunModal from GraphicsServices etc. What should I do to correct these memory leaks???

    Find the objects that you are allocating that aren't being freed and call release on them. Check out this link:

  • Windows size doesn't adapt when switching displays

    Hi everyone,
    I have a macbook pro 13" 2012 that I often use with a docking station to plug it to a biger LCD screen. Everything is working perfectly well except that when I plug it off from the docking station, all application that were opened when I was plugged remain with the same size they had on my bigger display.
    What I mean is, for exemple, full screen app will remain full screen but I'll only be able to see half of the windows when I work back on the original 13" screen. I guess this might be due to the fact that my LCD screen has a 1080p resolution while my 13" only have a 720p ? Is there anyway to force mac osx to resize all windows as per new display resolution, keeping the same ratio ?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    What Mac OS X will do for you is to put at least some part of each window onto the remaining screen -- None are left completely off-screen.
    Sorry, the rest is your problem. Re-size them or minimize them into the Dock before you disconnect the larger display.
