NEWBIE - Best Practices for FLash Website Development

I've decided to try and build my own flash website, so to help me learn the basics I downloaded the following sample Dynamic Flash Template: http://info.template-help.com/pre-sale_questions/about_web_design_templates/article25.html.
I've been playing around with it a little bit, and feel like I definitely know a lot more than I did previously, but also feel like I may learning the most efficient and effective methods.
Basically, my questions are what's the best software / methods to do the following, as it relates to the template described above.
1) I want the site able to be viewed by people who have flash enabled and those who don't.  I'd like for the default website to be flash oriented, but of the browser doesn't support flash or if there are no flash plug-ins installed, I want the HTML version of the site to display.  What the best way to make this happen?
2) If I use the dynamic text option for the flash site, all text is pulled from the tfile_main.html file.  Is this the best way to embed dynamic text into my flash file?  Is it the most efficient way or should the dynamic text be embedded from the HTML pages of the Non-Flash site?
3) Is it possible to have the flash and non-flash versions overlay each other, where if flash is supported, the flash content is displayed, but if flash is not supported, only the non-flash versions are displayed?
4) What the best way of optimizing a site of this nature for search engines?  If I were to upload only the flash version of the site, embedded in the index.html file, I think that the search engines would interpret my whole site as simply being one page, which I do not want.  I want them to recognize each distinct page.
5) Should I use Static or Dynamic text?  Should I insert any outgoing links with the flash file itself, or within the html files?
6) I've read alot about SWFObject2.x and it seems like it would help me do a lot of the things I'm wanting to do, but I have no idea how to use it.  I downloaded the .zip file, but have no clue what to do with it from there.
7) I have Flash CS3, but also currently have a free trial of the Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS5, so I have FLash CS5, Dreamweaver CS5, etc.  Should I use Flash CS3 or CS5?
8) How should I set-up my Publish Settings in FLash?
Sorry for such a long message and requesting so much info.  If you can only help out or provide guidance on 1 of the above questions it would be very beneficial to me and greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help and let me know if you need additional information.

No one is going to answer 8 questions, I certainly can't be bothered.
Cut them down in to different threads, in the relavent Adobe forum
But:
Use CS5.
You can use JS to determine if they have flash and show a style sheet/site accordingly, google it.
You can optimise flash sites too

  • Is there a list of best practices for Azure websites?

    Hi all;
    I was talking with a Sql Server expert today and learned that Azure Sql Server can take up to a minute to respond to a query that normally takes a fraction of a second. This is one of those things where it's really valuable to learn it when architecting as
    opposed to when we go live.
    Websites are not Sql Server (obviously) but that led to the question - Is there a list of best practices for Azure Websites? If so, what are they?
    We will be the website in multiple datacenters and using traffic manager to point people to the right one. The website will run as a REST server using Web API 2, mostly for license checks from our app running on corporate Exchange servers. And a small part
    will be for javascript based web pages used for account CRUD.

    sorry I was not sure if you were using a web server or what?
    One other idea out of the slow cooker is to use a dedicated web server with SQL server running beside IIS
    If you are using the standard web sites, then the SQL option is about as slow as FTP uploads, very slow
    I have considered time of day too, and it seems Azure is less loaded early in the AM

    Is there any Oracle documentation that describes best practices for setting up Workshop and developing on a workstation that includes Oracle's ODSI, OSB, Portal, and WLI? We are using all these products on a weblogic server for each developer's machine and experiencing performance and reliability issues. What's the optimal way to use these products on a developer's workstation. Thanks.

    Hi,

  • Best practice for function module development

    When designing a function module, what is the best practice. Should we develop it so that most of the extraction is done within the function module, or should we develop it such that prior to calling the function module the extraction should be done in the main calling program and the function module would have a huge interface of many importing parameters?
    For e.g. lets say for some business logic I need MATNR MTART MEINS BSTME and so on. Now by knowing the matnr I can get all the other fields. Should I create a function module with just matnr as importing parameter and do the Select on MARA in the FM or should I create the function module with all the fields as required importing parameters. What would be a best practise in such a scenario.
    Thank you.

    Now we are getting into the ecapsulation part of function groups.  Did you know that when you run your program, and it executes a FM, that ALL function modules in the function group are loaded into memory?  And that global data inside the function group can be shared across functino module calls?  This is how you would relieve your concern.  Lets say that all of your function modules belong to the same group,  And all of them need to use a record from MARA, and you don't want to do a SELECT in all of these functions.  Basically, you just create a global structure variable in the TOP include of the function group.  In the first FM, you simply do the select and put that data into the global variable, then during the next FM call(the FM must be in the same group) you can get the data from the global variable directly without having to go to the database.

  • Best practices for app store developer download

    We use company-owned macs to develop iOS applications. We frequently need to access the app store to download free apps (such as Xcode and competitor's apps), but the developers don't want to enter their personal iTunes credentials on company macs to do this. The company does not want to enter their credit card to create a company-wide iTunes account for fear of weird charges ending up on their card. Furthermore, the reason Apple has logins to the app store is to tailor the experience to the individual, so having a company login for many people does not seem to be the way to go. What is the best practice for this? Does iTunes have an "Organization" level object and that entity can add iTunes users to it like the "Developer Teams" aspect for Apple developers?

    I haven't done this, so I haven't solved the problem as such. But those organizations who I've seen mention it either just get free apps via this process:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
    or use a corporate credit card with the accounts. You can use a single credit card for all the accounts, to the best of my knowledge. There's also a Volume Purchase Plan for businesses which can simplify matters:
    http://www.apple.com/business/vpp/
    I believe that a redemption code obtained through this program can be used to set up an iTunes Store account, but I'm not certain.
    Regards.

  • Best practices for Flash CS5 and Flash Builder 4 integration?

    With Flash CS5's new XFL file structure/format, what's the best way to structure project files for Flash CS5 integration with Flash Builder 4? Flash CS5 autocreates a folder named after the xfl file as the outer container, and then all the assets/xfl within it. Should this folder be used as the project folder for Flash Builder 4, or better to nest the xfl container folder in a "real" project folder? I would presume the latter, since you might have multiple XFL files in one project. I was hoping to see some automatic linkages between document class of the Flash CS5 XFL file and any default ActionScript class created by Flash Builder, but so far I seem to need to specify a document class directly in Flash CS5's environment and making sure that the path to a default class created by Flash Builder is correct.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

    Most likely, you know that, but just in case, you can integrate new Flash project into existing Flex 4 project  from within the Flash Builder by choosing either Flash Component or Flash Container from the FB Design view. In such workflow Flash Builder opens the Flash CS 4 (I assume that should be the same for CS5) and takes care of the integrating the newly created Flash project into original Flex 4 project.

  • Best practices for Flash forms

    This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/ColdFusion/9.0/Developing/WSc3ff6d0ea77859461172e0811cbec10372 -7fed.html

    Hi,
    I can say the "Recompliation" is nothing but Refreshing the
    Browser window where the SWF is again generated which is considered
    to be the expensive process...
    So to overcome this, The "CFC's" are come into play which
    eventually communicates with the CF Server and returning the
    results back to the UI behind the scenes..

  • Best practice for putting together scenes in a Flash project?

    Hi, I'm currently working on a flash project with the following characteristics:
    using a PC
    2048x1080 pixels
    30 fps
    One audio file that plays (once) continuously across the whole project
    there are actions that relate to the audio, so the timing is important
    at least 10 scenes
    about 7 minutes long total
    current intent is for it to be played in a modern theater as a surprise
    What is the best practice for working on this project and then compiling it together?
    Do it all in one project file?
    Split the work into different project (xfl) files for each scene and then put it together when all the scenes are finalized?
    Use one project file but create different "scenes" for each respective scene?  I think this is the "classic" way (?).
    Make the scenes "movie clips" and then insert them into the timeline with the audio as its own layer?
    Other?
    I'm currently working on it by having it all in one project file.  But I've noticed that there's some lag (or it gets choppy) at certain parts during playback and the SWF history shows 3.1 MB with a yellow triangle with exclamation point symbol.  Thanks in advance.

    you would only do that if it makes your job easier.  generally speaking, it would not.
    when trying to sync sound and animation i think most authors find it easiest to use graphic symbols because you can see their animation when scrubbing the main timeline.  with movieclips you only see their animation when testing.
    however, if you're going to use actionscript to control some of your symbols, those symbols should be movieclips.

  • Best practices for development / production environments

    Our current scenario:
    We have one production database server containing the APEX development install, plus all production data.
    We have one development server that is cloned nightly (via RMAN duplicate) from production. It therefore also contains a full APEX development environment, and all our production data, albeit 1 day old.
    Our desired scenario:
    We want to convert the production database to a runtime only environment.
    We want to be able to develop in the test environment, but since this is an RMAN duplicated database, every night the runtime APEX will overlay it, and the production versions of the apps will overlay. However, we still want to have up to date data against which to develop.
    Questions: What is best practice for this sort of thing? We've considered a couple options:
    1.) Find a way to clone the database (RMAN or something else), that will leave the existing APEX environment intact? If such is doable, we can modify our nightly refresh procedure to refresh the data, but not APEX.
    2.) Move apex (in both prod and dev environments) to a separate database containing only APEX, and use DBLINKS to point to the data in both cases. The nightly refresh would only refresh the data and the APEX database would be unaffected. This would require rewriting all apps to use DBLINKS though, as well as requiring a change to the code when moving to production (i.e. modify the DBLINK to the production value)
    3.) Require the developers to export their apps when done for the day, and reimport the following morning. This would leave the RMAN duplication process unchanged, and would add a manual step which the developers loath.
    We basically have two mutually exclusive requirements - refresh the database nightly for the sake of fresh data, but don't refresh the database ever for the sake of the APEX environment.
    Again, any suggestions on best practices would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Bill Johnson

    Bill,
    To clarify, you do have the ability to export/import, happily, at the application level. The issue is that if you have an application that consist of more than a couple of pages, you will find yourself in a situation where changes to page 3 are tested and ready but, changes to pages 2, 5 and 6 are still in various stages of development. You will need to get the change for page 5 in to resolve a critical production issue. How do you do this without sending pages 2, 5 and 6 in their current state if you have to move the application all at once??? The issue is that you absolutely are going to need to version control at the page level, not at the application level.
    Moreover, the only supported way of exporting items is via the GUI. While practically everyone doing serious APEX development has gone on to either PL/SQL or Utility hacks, Oracle still will not release a supported method for doing this. I have no idea why this would be...maybe one of the developers would care to comment on the matter. Obviously, if you want to automate, you will have to accept this caveat.
    As to which version of the backend source control tool you use, the short answer is that it really doesn't matter. As far as the VC system is concerned, you APEX exports are simply files. Some versioning systems allow promotion of code through various SDLC stages. I am not sure about GIT in particular but, if it doesn't support this directly, you could always mimic the behavior with multiple repositories. Taht is, create a development repository into which you automatically update via exports every night. Whenever particular changes are promoted to production, you can at that time export form the development repository and into the production. You could, of course, create as many of these "stops" as necessary to mirror your shop's SDLC stages, e.g. dev, qa, intergation, staging, production etc.

    Is there a website or PDF somewhere which discusses best practices for producing a children's picture book? I am mostly interested in requirements for good image format, resolution, etc.

    There may be a few links in Apple Support, regarding articles about how to use iBooks Author
    and iBooks Store, etc; these would be separated into two general categories by device used.
    Since there is an iOS and an OS X version of each, you may have to look to see what Apple
    Support says about the one you are interested in; and how far their database goes toward an
    answer to your question. Otherwise, a general search engine approach may be necessary.
    Not sure if anything along the lines of what you seek would be available in an App.
    References to iBooks Author and iBooks Store, etc appear within these two categories in Support:
    For Mac OS X:

    For iOS:

    Appears a community host moved your earlier post into one of the iBooks Author or Store sections
    after I'd replied to what otherwise may be a similar post. Not sure if the links to the Discussions area
    of iBooks you are interested in, have similar questions or answers by others who'd visited previously.

    In my reply to your earlier thread, prior to it being moved, those links to sections of iBooks Author, etc

  • Tips and best practices for translating C into LabVIEW? SERIOUS newbie...

    I need to translate a C function into LabVIEW.  This will be my *first* LabVIEW project.  I've been reading some tutorials, and I'm still struggling to get my brain out of "C/C++ mode" and learn the LabVIEW paradigms.
    Structurally, the function that I need to translate gets called from a while-loop and performs a bunch of mathematical calculations.
    The basic layout is something like this (this obviously isn't the actual code, it just illustrates the general flow control and techniques that it uses).
    struct Params
    // About 20 int and float parameters
    int CalculateMetrics(Params *pParams,
    float input1, float input2 [etc])
    int errorCode = 0;
    float metric1;
    float metric2;
    float metric3;
    // Do some math like:
    metric1 = input1 * (pParams->someParam - 5);
    metric2 = metric1 + (input2 / pParams->someOtherParam);
    // Tons more simple math
    // A couple for-loops
    if (metric1 < metric2)
    // manipulate metric1 somehow
    else
    // set some kind of error code
    errorCode = ...;
    if (!errorCode)
    metric3 = metric1 + pow(metric2, 3);
    // More math...
    // etc...
      // update some external global metrics variables
    return errorCode;
    I'm still too green to understand whether or not a function like this can translate cleanly from C to LabVIEW, or whether the LabVIEW version will have significant structural differences.
    Are there any general tips or "best practices" for this kind of task?
    Here are some more specific questions:
    Most of the LabVIEW examples that I've seen (at least at the beginner level) seem to heavily rely on using the front panel controls  to provide inputs to functions.  How do I build a VI where the input arguments(input1, input2, etc) come as numbers, and aren't tied to dials or buttons on the front panel?
    The structure of the C function seems to rely heavily on the use of stack variables like metric1 and metric2 in order to perform calculations.  It seems like creating temporary "stack" variables in LabVIEW is possible, but frowned upon.  Is it possible to keep this general structure in the LabVIEW VI without making the code a mess?
    Thanks guys!

    There's already a couple of good answers, but to add to #1:
    You're clearly looking for a typical C-function. Any VI that doesn't require front panel opening (user interaction) can be such a function.
    If the front panel is never opened the controls are merely used to send data to the VI, much like (identical to) the declaration of a C-function. The indicators can/will be return values.
    Which controls and indicators are used to sending data in and out of a VI is almost too easy; Click the icon of the front panel (top right) and show connector, click which control/indicator goes where. Done. That's your functions declaration.
    Basically one function is one VI, although you might want to split it even further, dont create 3k*3k pixel diagrams.
    Depending on the amount of calculations done in your If-Thens they might be sub vi's of their own.

  • Best practices for loading swf's

    Greetings,
    Using CS5 AS2
    I'm creating a website in flash (all the files will be in one directory/folder on SharePoint) and want to make sure that what seems to be working fine is best practice.
    I have an index.swf with many buttons which will take the user to landing pages/content/other swfs. On these different buttons I have the script...
    on (release) {loadMovieNum("name.swf", 0);}                I could also do just {loadMovie("name.swf", 0);} ??
    The movie transitions nicely to name.swf and on this page I have a button that returns the user to the index.swf...
    on (release) {loadMovieNum("index.swf", 0);}   Things move back to index.swf nicely and user can chose to go to another landing page.
    It looks like I'm on the right track, bc nothing is going awry? but want to check. Am I following best practices for moving from one swf to another within a website?
    Thanks for help or confirmation!!

    loading into _level0 (and you should use loadMovieNum, not loadMovie, when loading into a level) undermines some of the benefits of a flash application:  all the assets must load with each display change and the user sees a flash instead of appearing to transition seamlessly from one display to the next.

  • Best practice for SWC's in shared projects?

    I'm creating a number of Flex components in Flash for a project where the development responsibilities will be shared between myself and another developer via SVN.
    My question is regarding linking the SWC's in the Flex Build Path. The .swc files are stored in the project src folder (src/components/swc/Tab.swc) It doesn't look like I can use a relative path. When the other developer opens the project on his local workspace, will he have have to relink the SWC's?
    What's the best practice for a scneario like this?

    Um... ok. But, don't you still have to link the swc?
    What I mean is, once I do that (place the swc in the library), I am unable to access that component. Seems as though I'm missing a step.
    Will continue to consult the documentation, but some clarity on this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

  • Best Practice for Securing Web Services in the BPEL Workflow

    What is the best practice for securing web services which are part of a larger service (a business process) and are defined through BPEL?
    They are all deployed on the same oracle application server.
    Defining agent for each?
    Gateway for all?
    BPEL security extension?
    The top level service that is defined as business process is secure itself through OWSM and username and passwords, but what is the best practice for security establishment for each low level services?
    Regards
    Farbod

    It doesnt matter whether the service is invoked as part of your larger process or not, if it is performing any business critical operation then it should be secured.
    The idea of SOA / designing services is to have the services available so that it can be orchestrated as part of any other business process.
    Today you may have secured your parent services and tomorrow you could come up with a new service which may use one of the existing lower level services.
    If all the services are in one Application server you can make the configuration/development environment lot easier by securing them using the Gateway.
    Typical probelm with any gateway architecture is that the service is available without any security enforcement when accessed directly.
    You can enforce rules at your network layer to allow access to the App server only from Gateway.
    When you have the liberty to use OWSM or any other WS-Security products, i would stay away from any extensions. Two things to consider
    The next BPEL developer in your project may not be aware of Security extensions
    Centralizing Security enforcement will make your development and security operations as loosely coupled and addresses scalability.
    Thanks
