Reducing file size in batch processes (multiple files)

I am now using a canon XTi 10.5 megapixel camera. I'm loving it, taking tons and pics, and see my memory on my computer shrinking rapidly. I'm not too worried about hard drive space as I can simply buy another hard drive. Where I'm running into problems is on my iPod. I have an 80gb video iPod. It is suddenly full, Almost 1/2 with audio, 1/2 with photos. I'm realizing that I need take the 5-7 megabyte files each (photos) in iPhoto and reduce them down a bit in dimensions and/or jpeg compression.
I use photoshop elements and am familiar with the multiple files option. I've used that a bit, nice feature.
Heres my question:
I know iPhoto is sensitive to manipulation of photos/changes if the changes aren't done through its interface. How can I go about taking the original pics for a number of events (talking about perhaps 2000 pics right now) and batch process them down in size a bit without weirding out iPhoto?
Does iPhoto have an option to batch change files in such a fashion? Is it as simple as finding the originals in the finder and simpy reducing them in size and making iPhoto update its thumbnails?
and how do I make iPhoto update its thumbnails, I forget...
Thanks

If you just want displayable image files on the iPod and not the full sized files then a very good solution, IMO, is to export those photos you want on the iPod to a folder on the Desktop. Then use Resize! to batch change the pixel dimension and the jpg compression level of the files. For my iPod Nano I use 640 x 480 and have Resize! compress them to medium. That gives me files in the 100 KB size range. If you want a smaller file just increase the compressions level a bit. Resize! automatically creates a new folder for the resized images so you can try different levels on the same folder. You can get a lot of photos on your iPod at that size. I then put that folder of resized files in my Pictures folder and have iTunes use it instead of using iPhoto.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Batch Process multiple files in multiple folders

I am using Acrobat 8.0.0 on Windows XP.
Is there a way to create some type of macro to combine multiple PDFs within multiple folders? Or better yet, I'd like to combine the files into a PDF package with security.
Thanks, let me know if I need to be more clear of provide more info.

    Thanks!
From what I can tell Process Multiple Files allows input from three places:
    1. A folder. 2. Import (like a scanner?) 3. Open files.
So it might be nice if it had a 4th option that would allow files to come out
of Organizer via tags, albums, etc. And if that option was chosen then it
would be nice to save the tags, and create version sets optionally.
But my guess is that from a product design perspective the thinking is
that most people would rather work in Organizer and then perform
actions on a logical set of photos from there. Certainly, that would be my
    preference.
What I'd like to do is do be in Organizer, select my images via tag(s),
run QuickFix on them, (all of that I can do), then reduce the file size,
and save the finished product as a version set. Then only thing I can't do
in PSE7 is reduce the file size. Of if there is I don't know how to do
    it automatically.
    Well, thanks for the help!

  • Save for Web with Optimize File Size for Batch Process

I have a client who needs to be able to run a batch process on jpg images ranging in size from 600KB to 2.5MB optimizing their file size as close to 200KB as possible. The feature is included in Photoshop's save for web optimize dialog but it doesn't work for batch processes. If you record an action with the optimize to file size option set it processes all the images in the batch based on the quality settings required to resize the image you used during recording, meaning if the image you recorded was 1.5MB the quality setting might be 70 percent to hit the 200KB mark but that wouldn't be the correct quality setting for a 600KB file nor a 2.5MB file those would either be too small or too large.
I've done quite a bit of searching both online and in the photoshop scripting forums but I haven't been able to find anything that would point me in the right direction.
My client's paying for this work so if there's someone who knows how to script this who'd rather be paid than just do some pointing we can arrange for that quite easily.
Thanks in advance for your assistance and suggestions.
In case it's of importance we're using Photoshop CS4.

If you don't mind spending a few bucks on a shareware prog, Jpegsizer has the option to save to a filesize.
    You can find it here.

There is a free trial version, but you can't save files.

  • Process Multiple Files in Photoshop Elements 4.0.

    Please Help,
I have a lot to learn about digital photos and when I retire I will have time. However, I have 4000+ digital photos at 900.0 plus KB (approximate 42.66x32 72ppi) each. Now I discover they take up lots of room (my backup is huge) and need to be resized to properly email.  I figure I will resize them all at the same time. I found process multiple files via the file drop down menu > Process Multiple Files by selecting one photo and opening Standard Edit. I then selected Folder in the process files from drop down menu, found my, large, digital photo folder via the browse button, checked include all subfolders, destination same as source, and quit at image size.
Am I on the right track? What is a reasonable image size? PSE uses width, hight, and resolution which is confusing when everyone else talks about file size. I found the PSE help information difficult to understand. I want to do this right the first time and would appreciate your suggestions.
I will change the settings on my Pentax Optio W30 Camera; after I get some help regarding the size issue, so my future photos will be easier to manage.
    Thanks

Your images are already smaller than expected.  The Pentax Optio W30 is a 7 mega pixel camera, which will produce images of about 3+ MB, when set to highest quality.
It is recommended to shoot at the highest possible quality, keep those images as "originals" and make copies for other purposes, such as email attachments.
If you are planning to resize and overwrite your originals, you will cause serious quality deterioration.
My suggestion is that you 1) set your camera to the highest quality and 2) get an exterior hard drive for storage.

  • Process Multiple Files to Reduce View Size within Safe Margin

I use Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements. I am looking for a way to multiple process 400 pictures to Premiere so photos are not cropped because of TV 4x3 image cropping some safe margin. In photoshop I could increase the canvas size to give a black boarder which gives the effect I want. The Photoshop File/Process Multiple Files... does not allow canvas size change. In Premier I can resize using effects for safe margin individually. I am looking for a procedure to multiple (bulk) process. I would even prefer some black letterboxing rather than losing the edges of the images by the TV and Premier cropping.
This must be a common need. - Thanks for any help.

I know of no way you can batch increase the canvas size of your photos, John. Sorry. It is not a feature of Process Multiple Files.
For what it's worth, the area that's lost around the edges of your video frame isn't due to any cropping by any of the programs. It's something your TV does, and it's called overscan.
But it varies greatly from TV to TV -- so one TV may cut off up to 10% while another may not cut off any of the edge of your video frame at all and you'd just be stuck with your black box around the outside of your video frame. Is that really what you want?
Also, CRTs (the old style of TV) tend to cut off much more of the frame edge than LCDs and plasma screens, which cut off almost none. So, depending on who you're doing this video for, it may not be worth the effort.

  • PhotoShop Elements 10...I need help with font size for watermark in Processing Multiple Files.....

I have PhotoShop Elements 10, and I am trying to watermark some of my photos, I have successfully added them one at a time with a font large enough to be seen. Now I am trying to add it using the "process multiple files" , I can do that but the font even at 72 the largest setting is so small on the photo you can barely read it! Can anyone help me the size larger on my photos?

Thank you, Michael. I just watched the Russell Brown video again for CS6 and looked real closely at his settings in ACR and he was using 240ppi. I changed my file in image size to 240 ppi and then ran the script and the layer didn't change size this time when I ran the script.
It is kind of annoying to have to change the image size everytime I want to run this script and then change it back again as most of my files are 300 ppi. I used to run his script for edit in ARC in CS5 and recall that if I just remembered to change the settings in ARC to 300 ppi while the script was playing and before pressing 'open' that the image wouldn't change size during the raw processing, but this doesn't seem to be working in CS6. Do you know of a way to use this script and not have to change the ppi for the image to 240?
    Thanks again.

  • Process multiple files question

I have finished scanning a number of old family photos and have used Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (PSE9) to “tag” and add “captions” to each photo. The photos vary in size and are saved in tif format. All of the work I have done so far was using the Organizer in PSE9.
When using the slideshow function of PSE9, I can view the photos and see the caption written over the bottom of the photos. Using other software to view the photos does not show the captions.
I have gone to the Edit screen of PSE9 and under File there is Process Multiple Files. Clicking that I have selected the options in the Labels section to add a caption, checked description, default font, 75 Opacity, default color. Having processed the multiple files, I thought when opening the processed photos I would see the caption I entered in the Organizer along the bottom of the photos. However, the caption does not appear when I view the photos. Am I misunderstanding something here? Would the captions only appear if I print the photo? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If they are large resolution images you possibly can't see the text on top of the photos as the font size is too small. You can change this manually when adding text to a single photo e.g. type 100 or 150 into the font size box but it's not possible during batch processing in PMFs
Open an image in Full edit and look in the layers panel to see if the text layer is present - but this will only work if you saved as PSD.
Otherwise you will need to reduce the file size and then add the captions im PMF's.

  • Process Multiple Files in PSE 7

    I'm running PSE7.
I'd like to take a group of images (jpeg's) and do the following to them:
    Run QuickFix on them.
Save them as a new file with the name based on the original name plus some extra information.
Resize the jpeg's to a size suitable for the web. Or possibly a little larger.
It would really be great if:
I could use a 'tag' to select the images I want to process.
The tags on the new images are the same as the originals.
The new files are written into the same folder as the original. Even if multiple folders are needed due to
the tags bringing in images from multiple folders.
The new images would become part of a version set or stack along with the originals.
    Well, that's what's I'm interested in doing.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciatted!

The Process Multiple Files command applies settings to a folder of files. If you have a digital camera or a scanner with a document feeder, you can also import and process multiple images. (Your scanner or digital camera may need an acquire plug‑in module that supports actions.)
When processing files, you can leave all the files open, close and save the changes to the original files, or save modified versions of the files to a new location (leaving the originals unchanged). If you are saving the processed files to a new location, you may want to create a new folder for the processed files before starting the batch.
Note: The Process Multiple Files command does not work on multiple page files.
Choose File > Process Multiple Files.
Choose the files to process from the Process Files From pop‑up menu:
    Folder
Processes files in a folder you specify. Click Browse to locate and select the folder.
    Import
Processes images from a digital camera or scanner.
    Opened Files
    Processes all open files.
Select Include All Subfolders if you want to process files in subdirectories of the specified folder.
For Destination, click Browse and select a folder location for the processed files.
If you chose Folder as the destination, specify a file-naming convention and select file compatibility options for the processed files:
For Rename Files, select elements from the pop‑up menus or enter text into the fields to be combined into the default names for all files. The fields let you change the order and formatting of the components of the filename. You must include at least one field that is unique for every file (for example, filename, serial number, or serial letter) to prevent files from overwriting each other. Starting Serial Number specifies the starting number for any serial number fields. If you select Serial Letter from the pop-up menu, serial letter fields always start with the letter “A” for the first file.
For Compatibility, choose Windows, Mac OS, and UNIX® to make filenames compatible with the Windows, Mac OS, and UNIX operating systems.
Under Image Size, select Resize Images if you want each processed file resized to a uniform size. Then type in a width and height for the photos, and choose an option from the Resolution menu. Select Constrain Proportions to keep the width and height proportional.
To apply an automatic adjustment to the images, select an option from the Quick Fix panel.
To attach a label to the images, choose an option from the Labels menu, then customize the text, text position, font, size, opacity, and color. (To change the text color, click the color swatch and choose a new color from the Color Picker.)
Select Log Errors That Result From Processing Files to record each error in a file without stopping the process. If errors are logged to a file, a message appears after processing. To review the error file, open with a text editor after the Batch command has run.
Click OK to process and save the files.

  • Process Multiple Files in PSE7 - o/p files to Organizer?

    I'm using PSE7.
When I run 'Process Multiple Files' from the File menu in Editor I
can create a new set of jpegs. For example, I can run them through
the Quick Fix processes. If I create new files as output rather than
overwriting the originals, is there a way that I can get those new files
    back into Organizer automatically?
And the follow up questions would be
    1) Do the original tags all get retained in the new files?
    2) Can the new files be part of a version set with the originals?
    Thanks for any thoughts!

Want to know - HOW TO:
    1. Create new from clipbaord
    2. Process multiple files
    Please help.

For clipboard copy, I start with File > New and the size will be set to what's in the clipboard. Then once the new file is opened, Edit > Paste will place the clipboard contents as a layer in the new document.
You must remember to use the command Layer > Flatten Image of you want to save as jpeg or any other file format that doesn't support layers.
    For processing multiple files,
File > Automate > Batch or
File > Scripts > Image Processor...
Check the User guide or google information for those commands if you have specific needs.

  • Photo File Size and Photoshop processing

On  previous discussion, Steve Grisetti noted that problems with burning are sometimes associated with photo file size.  The post stated that Photoshop Elements has a batch processing selection that can resize photos all at once.  I when to Photoshop, selected process multiple file, selected source, save in same as source, and resize images 1000.  When I viewed my photos after, about 50 of my photos were now duplicates of other photos For example, I put all my pictures in timeline order prior to doing my video.  If I found a NEW photo after I had already scanned and named the photos, I would place the NEW photo in the picture folder by adjusting accordingly:  1.jpg, 2.jpg 3.1.jpg 3.jpg The 3.1.jpg would be the NEW photo.  Photoshop replaced 3.1jpg with the picture in 3jpg.  Does anyone know how to restore my photos back to the original "3.1jpg"?  The backup is not accessible at this time.

If I understand you correctly you have been using the renaming feature and the parameters you used caused file1 to be renamed to a pre-existing filename (file2). If this is so then you probably have lost the original file2. An undelete utility may help (try Piriform Recuva).
For the future when using batch conversion it is good practice to select a new folder for the outputted files.
It is also good practice to burn all image originals to a CD or DVD immediately after importing from your camera. This way you can always recover originals.
Here are a couple of screenshots, the first from Elements Organizer and the second from Photoshop Elements. Which one did you use and what parameters did you enter?

  • Optimal workflow for batch processing LR files with Nik plug ins

I have a series of 40 or so landscape images that I would like to efficiently apply a couple of Nik filters to using Color Efex.  I'd appreciate any suggestions re: the most efficient workflow to accomplish this task in a batch processing approach, as my current approach of taking each image into Photoshop, while preserving Smart Filter benefits, is terribly inefficient.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Sorry but File->Process Multiple Files is the only way and functionalities with which you can batch process your images in PSE. However you can add action in Window->Action Player and apply to your images opened in workspace -
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-photoshop-elements-11/adding-actions/
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4736578
The functionality is available in full functionality product Photoshop via File->Automate->Batch where you can load actions in action panel and they would appear in this dialog box but this is not available in Elements.
The best way to do here is to load actions in Window->Action Player and open all your images and click on play button one by one and then use Process Multiple Files to save all these in one go as per your preferences of file type, size, name etc.
    Thanks,
    Garry
