SiteGrinder (PS plug-in) web design question answered

Over at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.59b4e1c9 we've been discussing SiteGrinder, the PS plug-in which converts Photoshop designs to working websites.
One of the posters had concerns about the SG coding. (I don't know if he's used the plug-in.) He pointed out that on their users' sample sites at http://www.medialab.com/sitegrinder , if you enlarge the text with cmd-+, everything gets crowded and overlaps. I noted that this is a common problem with most/all sites, regardless of their origins. He responded:
>It's common -- far too common -- but not inevitable. It's bound to happen with SG, though, because they carve up the layout into fixed size chunks and then use absolute positioning, so there's no way for the containers to accommodate changes in font size except by crashing into each other, or growing scroll bars, which is only sometimes going to work. For the same reason -- starting with a single Photoshop image -- they can't identify headings or lists, so the pages aren't properly accessible to some assistive technology. If you don't care about accessibility, you should realize that this also means that they become hard or impossible for search engines to analyze, so people aren't going to find your site so easily.
I've only just downloaded the SiteGrinder demo, so I couldn't confirm or deny this, so I sent it along to the developer at MediaLab, who replied overnight on a weekend. He says:
>The criticisms are partly true. SiteGrinder uses something called "absolute" positioning as its default. This means that if the text size is increased and the text has been divided into several closely packed layers that after resizing the text may overlap.
>But, while this is the default SiteGrinder positioning behavior, it is not the only option. SiteGrinder supports relative positioning through use of a -grow layer. Content in a grow layer (and the footer below it) won't suffer this problem.
>Also, no website is fully resize resistant to any amount of text size increase. The normal expectation is that a site should accommodate two levels of font size changes in either direction. This can also be accomplished by simply keeping text layers away from each other so they don't crowd one another.
>SiteGrinder does a lot of unseen work for supporting accessibility. It always outputs the content in read order, puts title attributes on graphic buttons, doesn't clutter the HTML with IMG tag graphics ( CSS should be used for design graphics, and that's the SG default - semantically important image layers can be noted as such with the -img hint), properly sets the alt attribute when img tags are used and never puts empty alt="" attributes into the HTML (if you are doing that you should be using CSS for the graphic, not an IMG tag). Also, text -menu layers are nicely converted to UL-LI constructs for you - very important for search engines and accessibility.
>However, SiteGrinder does not yet support header tags, simply because there is no simple way to designate them from Photoshop. However, of all the changes one might want to do downstream, those are by far the easiest. It is our goal for SiteGrinder to one day support header tags in an elegant and seamless way, but I personally don't see their current absence as a big drawback. Why would someone who hand codes HTML be upset if a helper tool didn't put in header tags for them? Hope this helps, Chris
>P.S. SiteGrinder has advanced features for importing HTML, inserting HTML directly into a Photoshop layer, as well as adjusting the HEAD portion of a page. Our more savvy users have no trouble getting header tags into their SiteGrinder builds. And others just put them in downstream.
This is mostly Greek to me (and fortunately SG users don't need to understand most of it, as it happens behind the plug-in scenes) but I'd be interested to hear what other html-savvy folks think.

MediaLab's response is encouraging. It shows that they are aware of the issues and try to do something about it. It suggests though that you won't just be able to go with all the defaults, and you aren't going to understand the options unless you find out something about what's going on behind the scenes, which is really all I've been suggesting you should do. The choice of tools is up to you, if they're capable of doing the job. I will persist in believing that starting from a PSD image is not the right way to go, but I won't argue the point with anyone.
Best of luck starting out in Web design. Watch out for Internet Explorer 6.

  • Web design questions (Was: A number of questions..)

    Ok so!
    What fonts are known to go well together when making banners or headers? I have been messing around with a lot of fonts and im really just looking for some new ones!
    I know this question really depends on the banner itself but what is a recommended size of a font when making a header? lets say 860x250 ?
    Are there any real kind of "must nots" when designing banners?
    When Placing text onto A banner where is the usual place you would see it? I know it changes from site to site but from just looking around a lot of text seems to be in the left bottom corner, is this a norm of some sort?
    Are there any known font combinations which would go together well when making a full webpage? As in fonts for the sidebar, content area, footer etc, any combinations?
    Thank you very much!

    You are asking design questions, but most web designers, including those who frequent this forum, have  no design expertise.
    Your questions are good, but  incomplete. The right typeface and size depends on the impression you are trying to create. For instance, you wouldn't want to use the typeface "Comic" for a website selling financial services.
    Many corporations have lengthy documents detailing their identity for graphic design and advertising. Such documents define which typefaces may be used where, and how. Assuming that you don't have such a document to work with for the creation of this web banner, think about the business, organization (or whatever) the website is for. Should it convey conservative dependability? Edginess? Family friendliness? The typefaces you choose should take such qualities into consideration.
    There's no definite answer to any of the questions you have asked. But that's OK. You should research websites that create the kind of impression you want to make and study how they accomplish it.

  • Web Design Market

    Hi, I recently started going back to my web design which I left a few years ago when I started my master. At that time I was a web designer working with Freehand, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop etc, My focus was interface design for computer applications, graphic design and mainly web design (only interface design and client side programming such as actionscripting for Flash), I tried to learn server side programming like .net C++, C # VB, ASP etc but found them so hard to catch up, as far as I never had enough time for both Graphic side (interface design) and programming, at the end I chose to stick to my interface design and leave server side programming to experts.
    Considering all these, that now I'm going back to my old habit, interface design for websites, want to know how market is for this right now?
    I know if you go for server-side and .net even though many are outsourced to India still there are opportunity but interface design which I mean the combination of Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks,Photoshop is unclear for me.
    Please tell me how do you see the market in this field (interface design). My worries are recently I felt a lot of people want a person to do everything together (database, graphic design, server side programming plus interface design!) and if this is true I wont go anywhere by focusing only on Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks,Photoshop at the same time there is absolutely no way for me to try ASP.net and similar applications , I  never have time to focus both on programming and interface design. Would like you to share your experience with me.
    In other words will I go anywhere in this market if I just focus on Web Design (interface design) with  Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks,Photoshop?
    (I don't use these applications for print media)
    Thank you.

    Dear Web Designer,

  • Hey guys, I have a question about Web Design

    I have been trying to learn webdesign for a few months now, and so far, I am still learning HTML and some CSS. At the moment, my experience is still very thin, I am struggling with things, and I only know how to create simple, static pages. For example I still don't know how to produce "clean code". Or how one determines just how "clean" the code he has produced really is.
    I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions I have:
    I am still not sure how I will know when I am competent enough to work in Web Design... What are the best signs that an individual is good enough?
    I was also wondering what programming language I need to know to do the following:
    Create a WORKING Site Search. One like the search bar in the top corner of this page that will return search results from your website... Do I need to know how to program PHP? I've heard that you do need PHP to do this? The same goes for creating e-mail forms, and other forms like this. Do I need PHP for this?
    Another thing is CMS systems like Wordpress and Joomla. What is the reason for using these as opposed to just designing a website's pages in Dreamweaver, and then uploading them via FTP to your web server?
    And finally, can someone explain to me why CSS is groped like this when it is coded? Why has the Div ID "OuterWrapper" been styled multiple times?
    For example: #outerWrapper #feature {
    #outerWrapper #subcontentWrapper {
    #outerWrapper #subcontentWrapper #rightColumn {
    ^ Couldnt the designer simply have styled "~OuterWrapper" once and left it at that?
    Please see below:
    #outerWrapper #feature {
        height: 225px;
        width: 880px;
        margin-left: 0px;
        margin-bottom: 5px;
        background-image: url(images/feature.jpg);
        background-repeat: no-repeat;
        background-position: center top;
    #outerWrapper #subcontentWrapper {
        padding-right: 15px;
        padding-left: 15px;
        clear: both;
        padding-top: 20px;
        background-color: #FFF;
        padding-bottom: 40px;
        border-top-width: 4px;
        border-right-width: 4px;
        border-left-width: 4px;
        border-top-style: solid;
        border-right-style: solid;
        border-left-style: solid;
        border-top-color: #F90;
        border-right-color: #F90;
        border-left-color: #F90;
        background-image: url(images/footer-fade.jpg);
        background-repeat: repeat-x;
        background-position: bottom;
        height: 100%;
    #outerWrapper #subcontentWrapper #rightColumn {
        float: right;
        width: 220px;
        background-color: #DBE7FB;
        border: 1px solid #DCDFE4;
        margin-bottom: 15px;
    Also, regarding Javascript: How exactly does one become proficient enough to learn scripting for the thousands of little widgets, and navigation bars, and other functions that Javascript can do out there?
    I know a lot of these questions are strange and may be hard to answer, but I am really hoping some of you guys can provide some helpful advice/direction for me to improve with code. I studied as a Print Graphic Designer, and now it's really hurting me in this economy trying to find a job due to the fact that I lack full competency in Web Design... and the longer it takes me to get better at this, the slimmer my chances become at finding work!
    I really need help on this, so I would be extremely grateful for detailed and informative answers. Perhaps some links to very good video tutorials on learning how to effectively design webpages - Common things like Javascripted navigation bars, image slideshows, how to design working site search forms and contact forms, and how to use Wordpress. I ask this because there are so many terrbile tutorial videos out there (I know from experience) and it is next to impossible for myself, a beginner, to tell the good ones from the bad.
    Thankyou guys.

    CMS's like  WordPress, Joomla! & Drupal are popular open source (PHP & MySql) frameworks.  They contain all the backend PHP code needed to create a dynamic web site that contains capability for advanced functions:  site search, on-line editing, shopping carts, member log-in sites, blogs with comments, scripted contact forms, and so much more...
    The allure of Open Source frameworks is that they save developers time and money.  Instead of building everything from scratch (which can take months), an experienced developer can usually install WordPress on the client's server and be up & running in a few hours without customizations, or in a couple of weeks with customizations.   A firm understanding of PHP, how to set up a server-side database, backing up MySql, CSS theming, and HTML code are required skills to work with these frameworks.  WordPress is probably the easiest to set-up; Drupal is for more experienced coders.
    I am still not sure how I will know when I am competent enough to work in Web Design... What are the best signs that an individual is good enough?
    You're ready when you can look at code and understand what it means/does. Being able to problem solve, identify mistakes and fix them on your own is a must have skill.

  • Set Security Question & Answer using UME API in Web dynpro Java

    Hi Experts,
    I;ve developed a Web Dynpro java application to create a user in UME.
    I am able to set all the user account related attributes but I am not able to set the security question and answer as I do not see any attribute for the same.
    Can anyone please suggest how to set the Security question and answer in UME?
    This is required so that if the user wishes to reset his password / forgets password, we can ask him the security question which he selected at the time of registration.
    Please let me know if it can be achieved at the code level and whether UME API supports security question and answer or any such attribute.
    Also, if no such attribute is present by default in UME at the moment; can we create/configure some custom attributes in UME and store the security question and answer into those attributes. This would serve our purpose.
    Kindly assist.
    Regards,
    Anurag

    Hi,
    Thanks a lot for the reply!!!
    I have one doubt here:
    You've mentioned the below code to fetch the security questions in your reply:
    IUser user = WDClientUser.getCurrentUser().getSAPUser();
    String CUSTOMER_NAMESPACE = "com.sap.security.core.usermanagement";
    String attmotname [] = user.getAttribute(CUSTOMER_NAMESPACE,"MotherName");
    String attlucknum [] = user.getAttribute(CUSTOMER_NAMESPACE,"LuckyNumber");
    String attmobnum [] = user.getAttribute(CUSTOMER_NAMESPACE,"MobileNumber");.
    But this would be only applicable when the user has already logged on to the portal as it uses "WDClientUser.getCurrentUser().getSAPUser();" code.
    On the contrary, I want the security questions and answer to be accessed even when the user is not logged on to Portal so that based on the question & answer, the user can reset his password.
    Please suggest, how can we achieve this and where and how to set the custom attributes for the same?
    Do we have to set the Publicly Viewable Custom Attributes present at location you mentioned in your reply?
    Also, if yes; please let me know how to set the custom attributes?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anurag

  • Novice designer looking for a simple way to design a question/ answer guide?

    I have Adobe CS3 and need to put together a question / answer generator.
    Looking to write something similar to the Microsoft Help Center but more functionality picts ,diagrams and possibly videos.
    most likely will host the project on a sever and then place link to QA site on clients WS.
    Any templates available out there (flash , Dreamweaver) that could speed the process up and at least get me pointed in the right direction?
    THX

    Oh crap, I just answered my own question by reading the manual ("when all else fails, read the manual"). I need to create a zip file of the project, then post it on my ftp. What a bother.

  • What web design software is equivalent to dvd studio pro?

    is there a program that someone uses thats functionality is based on dvd studio pro?

    That's an odd question.
    Web design is vastly different to DVD authoring - chalk and cheese, really. If you are after a web development platform that allows events to happen on a timeline basis, then Dreamweaver will do this. It also allows for navigational links to be set up that go to any part of a web site.
    But then, so do most web development environments worth looking at... what exactly is it that you are after?

  • SOA real-time design question

    Hi All,
    We are currently working with SOA Suite 11.1.1.4. I have a SOA application requirement to receive real-time feed for six data tables from an external third party. The implementation consists of five one-way operations in the WSDL to populate the six database tables.
    I have a design question. The organization plans to use this data across various departments which requires to replicate or supply the data to other internal databases.
    In my understanding there are two options
    1) Within the SOA application fork the data hitting the web-service to different databases.
    My concern with this approach is what if organizations keep coming with such requests and I keep forking and supplying multiple internal databases with the same data. This feed has to be real-time, too much forking with impact the performance and create unwanted dependencies for this critical link for data supply.2) I could tell other internal projects to get the data from the populated main database.
    My concern here is that firstly the data is pushed into this database flat without any constraints and it is difficult to query to get specific data. This design has been purposely put in place to facilitate real-time performance.Also asking every internal projects to get data from main database will affect its performance.
    Please suggest which approach should I take (advantage/disadvantage. Apart from the above two solutions, is there any other recommended solution to mitigate the risks. This link between our organization and external party is somewhat like a lifeline for BAU, so certainly don't want to create more dependencies and overhead.
    Thanks

    I had tried implementing the JMS publisher/subscriber pattern before, unfortunately I experienced performance was not so good compared to the directly writing to the db adapter. I feel the organization SOA infrastructure is not setup correctly to cope with the number of messages coming through from external third party. Our current setup consists of three WebLogic Servers (Admin, SOA, BAM) all running on only 8GB physical RAM on one machine. Is there Oracle guideline for setting up infrastructure for a SOA application receiving roughly 600000 messages a day. I am using SOA 11.1.1.4. JMS publisher/subscriber pattern just does not cope and I see significant performance lag after few hours of running. The JMS server used was WebLogic JMS
    Thanks

  • Method design question...and passing object as parameter to webserice

    I am new to webservice...one design question
    i am writing a webservice to check whether a user is valid user or not. The users are categorized as Member, Admin and Professional. For each user type I have to hit different data source to verify.
    I can get this user type as parameter. What is the best approach to define the method?
    Having one single method isValidUser and all the client web service can always call this method and provide user type or should I define method for each type like isValidMember, isValidAdmin ?
    One more thing...in future the requirement may change for professional to have more required field in that case the parameter need to have more attribute. But on client side not much change if I have a single isValidUser method...all they have to do is pass additional values
    isValidUser(String username, String usertype, String[] userAttributes){
    if usertype == member
    call member code
    else if usertype = professional
    call professional code
    else if usertype = admin
    call admin code
    else
    throw error
    or
    isValidMember(String username, String[] userAttributes){
    call member code
    One last question, can the parameter be passed as object in web service like USER object.

    First of all, here is my code
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    TYPE USERCONTEXT AS OBJECT
    user_login varchar2,
    user_id integer,
    CONSTRUCTOR FUNCTION USERCONTEXT (
    P_LOGIN IN INTEGER
    P_ID_ID IN INTEGER
    ) RETURN SELF AS RESULT
    Either your type wont be compiled or this is not the real code..

  • New to dreamweaver, complex web design.

    hello, I'm a sports science student with a passion for helping people. I always get asked questions from novice gym users who don't know where or how to start. I'd like to create a website that allows them to find all they need to know In one place with all scientifically studied results and articles about supplements training etc. But also that based on a number of variables will give them a program to follow, free of charge. I downloaded dreamweaver and am at a loss about how to use it, I am very tech savi but not with web design.
    I Have thought through a design.
    The home/welcome page will be plain and simple with a introductory paragraph with a button saying 'get started' or a button saying 'I've already started' one will take them to a page that has variables such as height, weight, age, body fat, goals and experience, and through this information spit out a program, I know how to use all variables to create a routine (with my formula ofcourse) and obviously the other button will lead to there already created program.  The program itself will allow for a befire photo and constant recent photoa to be uploaded, also a table for day to day weigh ins and progress check on weight lifted in the gym. On the far right of the page I want to have a seperate scroll down bar with titles of various articles about different areas of fitness.
    I Know this seems like a lot but i have the contacts to get users on to the site but I need good design to keep them there. Is all of this possible on dreamweaver?
    THank ink you for any help

    When you use a complex web site there are several parts to it
    - the HTML which controls the layout and the text
    - the pictures (which can only be changed by the web designer, nobody else)
    - the JavaScript, which can do certain things but cannot make permanent changes
    - the web server, which will run scripts (programs) to do things
    It is the web server which will run software to create programs, allow upload of pictures, remember status etc.
    This is written by an experienced web programmer, who must be experienced in all the latest security issues. IT MUST NOT BE DONE BY A BEGINNER OR AMATEUR. I say this with pain because it used to be a great way to learn. But no longer, because the bad guys know all the tricks, and if a beginner does it, in no time at all, you will have porn hosted in your web site, it will be secretly sending spam, and all the personal information will be stolen. If you are in the EU, this last is particularly serious as you have an absolute responsibility to protect personal information, and there are unlimited fines.

  • Dreamweaver design question

    Hi all. I'm new to the forum and ha da design question. My site took about 3 weeks to complete and after finishing what I though was a pretty error free website I noticed that dreamwever 8 was coming up with numerous errors that matched http://validator.w3.org's scans. My question is this. Why does dreamwever ( regardless of the release ) allow the designer of the website he/she is creating without pointing out the errors as they go along with simple instructions on how to fx them.  As an example My meta tags
    <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="xxxxxxx">
    <META NAME="description" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
    <META NAME="robots" CONTENT="xxxxx">
    <META NAME="author" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
    <META NAME="copyright" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
    all had to be changed over to
    <meta name="keywords" xxxxxxxxxxxxx">
    <meta name="description" CONTENT="xxxxxxx">
    <meta name="robots" CONTENT="xxxxxx">
    <meta name="author" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
    <meta name="copyright" CONTENT="xxxxxxxx">
    all because dreamweaver didnt tell me that the <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
       "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    didnt fit the original design. Now my site ( if you wish to view the code ) is www.gamblingwhore.com and if you look at the page source you will see that the code has been corrected on dw 8 but still shows more than 30 errors on http://validator.w3.org. Does dreamwevaer not have the basic tool available to fix these errors without such hassle. Its not just my site either, many sites built in dreamwever can be checked with the http://validator.w3.org website only to find more than 20 -100 different errors.
    Dream weaver creators need to focus on these errors because they hinder seo and they create alot of extra work
    Thank you

    The w3c and XHTML have come a ways since the release of Dreamweaver 8 (I used it in late 2004 and 2005).
    Dreamweaver 8 will build transitional XHTML files as well as old style single tag HTML. It all depends on the personal preferences of the designer.
    Just for kicks, go to say... 20 random websites and see just how many get a green light when you validate them. If its half, you're lucky. This page doesn't even validate;
    Dreamweaver has the menu option (at least in CS3 an CS4) under the Commands menu to "Clean Up HTML" or "Clean Up XHTML" depending on what you're building. I make a point of running that command as I build along with Apply Source Formatting.
    I also use a local validator program to check my code before putting anything.
    That's why they call it WYSIWYG software.
    If it did everything perfectly for everyone every single time, good web designers would find themselves out of work.

  • I have new macbook pro retina and is there a web design format can use?

    I have new macbook pro retina and is there a web design format can use?

    I'm not understanding your question. I think you would use any of the current web design formats. Are you talking about what styles to use? If so see the css standards css1, css2, css3 to see what they can provide and which browsers are most compatible. If you are talking about languages use a current standard like html5, php, C#, visual basic , javascript, etc.
    Be more specific about what you are asking.

  • WLPI Design Question

    I've got a bit of a design question for Process Integrator. Currently I'm building
    a prototype for an exception handling system using Process Integrator. The application
    has to be web based and I'm using the Front Controller design pattern that is
    described in the J2EE Blueprint docs.
    I've come across a bit of a design problem. Should I design the application so
    that all the user actions in a task are accessed via the api set or should I build
    this functionality into the template. For example, a user will action a task which
    requires the user to update some variables in the template. In the template definition
    should use a Send XML to Client action and then use the taskExecute method on
    the worklist, or should I do it all programatically?
    Also if I do use the Send XML to Client should I then mark the task done using
    the APIs or using the Studio. I have noticed that if I mark the task done wihtin
    the studio after sending the xml, the task becomes available for the next user,
    even if the variables haven't been updated yet.
    Sorry about the rambling nature of this post.
    Thanks in advance.

  • What kind of job can I get being a Web Designer/Graphic Designer?

    I run BlackReefDesigns.com, and am doing quite a bit of
    business consider I don't really advertise too much. I've learned
    how to do eCommerce, Flash, etc and things are progressing nicely.
    I feel confident in my skills, and I realize that anything I
    don't know how to do, I can learn rather quickly. The problem is I
    feel I need to become more of a 'business man' if I want my company
    to really move forward. I'm only 23 years old so I was thinking of
    going and working for a Web/Graphic design firm so I can learn more
    about the business aspect of running my own company. Im also
    working towards a B.A. in Graphic Design at a larger University in
    Southern California...
    Just curious, with my skillset, how much money could I, or
    should I be making if I went and worked for someone else? Do you
    guys know anybody in Southern California that I could work for?
    thanks in advance

    i know that's how i got a lot of my bad habits (not from a
    teacher,
    per se, but my first boss who taught me some basics) a lot of
    people
    think they know the dos and don'ts but really don't (plus,
    they tend to
    change). i thought i knew a lot of stuff until i started
    coming here and
    learned that a lot of what i thought was the right way to do
    things
    actually wasn't.
    come here often. and listen to what these people say because
    they know
    their stuff (you'll quickly figure out who the ones are that
    know what
    they're talking about). i can't tell you how much i've
    learned in the
    relatively short time i've been a part of this forum. and i'm
    still
    learning!
    teach yourself html. you don't have to be able to write an
    entire site
    by hand, but at least be able to look at the code and
    understand what it
    means. like others said, you seem to have a good grasp of
    graphic
    design, but websites have to be more than graphics.
    to answer your money question, it really kind of depends on
    the market
    where you live. you might just want to look in the want ads
    and see what
    kind of salaries are being offered for this type of work in
    your town.
    there's also resources on the web where you can see average
    salaries for
    various jobs in different places. yahoo has one
    http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/salary)
    but there are lots of others if you
    search for something like "compare my salary."
    good luck! you seem willing to learn, which is great!
