Skills for DBA

What are all skills need for 2 year experience DBA ?

I disagree if installing on Linux is more complex than windows. as long as you can launch the OUI, it is the same, just click here click there.
but DBA is not only installing, I assume the Oracle is already installed in the company.
but as DBA, especially if you have developer background, better to equip yourself with strong concept knowledge.
your combine skills of developer with DBA will be very useful for tuning.
as the DBA, you will have one generic question from users, "Why the system is so slow?" then your fun starts by digging into AWR, trace, even checking the PL/SQL code.

  • Looking for SQL for DBAs Book

I am a DBA who has rudimentary knowledge of SQL. I would like to know if there is a book like 'SQL for DBAs'. Last week, i had a requirement to find all tables without PKs in a schema. I could find it only after searching oracle forums. Now, i think, i should at least be an intermediate user of SQL before being an DBA. Hence, looking for a book to enhance my SQL skills.

In order to enhance your skills, I can recommend you to bring regular visits to this forum (as you already do) and the Database-General forum, where lots of DBA's hang out.
    Other useful sites: http://asktom.oracle.com
Also I recommend all books written by Tom Kyte.
    Oracle documentation is online:

  • External Tables preprocessor in 11.2 as a tool for DBAs

I'm really really excited about new 11.2 external tables preprocessor feature. Oracle documentation show examples based on compressed files and how to load uncompress them on a fly and load them to oracle.
Although that is interesting use of external tables preprocessor, I think what is more interesting is the fact that it can be used outside normal ETL and can be great tool for DBAs who run scripts in unix, now they can execute the scripts from oracle environment (e.g. oracle apex) and read the results of the script very easy way using select * from ... (until now I was using JAVA for executing unix scripts from Oracle environment, this is easier way for sure)
I posted few very simple samples on my blog http://jiri.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/no-more-unix-scripts-in-11-2/

    Hi,
I agree the external tables preprocessor is a great feature.
BUT, I have a problem when I use it with Oracle APEX 4.1.
It gives ORA-29913: error in executing ODCIEXTTABLEFETCH callout
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Any Visual tool which is helpful for DBA.....

Is there any visual tool which is helpful for DBA to get or see the live Report,Statistics,Performance for the running Oracle Production Instances.

Are you after free stuff or are you prepared to licence pay a licence fee?
Inthe paid for category the obvious place to start is teh Performance Tuning package for Oracle Enterprise Manager. Quest and BMC also offer dashboard type interfaces.
In the free stakes, there's quite a neat tool called Orasnap.

  • Common Linex & vi  commands for DBAs

Can some body forward me the everyday linex & vi commands for DBAs ...

A decent, inexpensive UNIX book is "UNIX Complete" http://www.amazon.com/UNIX-Complete-Peter-Dyson/dp/078212528X
Cheap, but useful. And half the book is a pretty detailed "dictionary" of commands, many with worked examples. Looks like you can get the book for less than a dollar (plus P+P) on Amazon.

  • OCA 10g for DBA

    Hi,
I'm planning to take the exam OCA 10g for DBA. I'm wondering which books you would recommend me as a good reference.
    I think I will try 1Z0-007 and 1Z0-042 (as a mandatory one)
If 1Z0-007 exam is a good choice?
I bought a book: OCA/OCP: Introduction to Oracle9i SQL Study Guide (Hardcover)
by Chip Dawes (Author), Biju Thomas (Author)
for preparing to 1Z0-007, but I'm not sure which book is good for 1Z0-042 exam.
    This one:
OCA: Oracle 10g Administration I Study Guide (1Z0-042) (Paperback)
by Chip Dawes (Author), Bob Bryla (Author), Joseph C. Johnson (Author), Matthew Weishan (Author)
    or:
Oracle Database 10g OCP Certification All-In-One Exam Guide (Oracle Database 10g Handbook) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)
by Damir Bersinic (Author), John Watson (Author)
I have been reading many reviews on Amazon but still I want to ask before making a decision.
    Thanks

    I recommend using both books.
For me the best way to prepare was first using the one of McGraw Hill because this one was easier to read.
But this book misses some details which are asked during the exam!
So the best thing is to read the one of Sybex as well aferwards to check for missing details.
A colleague of mine first prepared with only the Sybex book, but got questions on the exam which weren't covered in the Sybex book as well.
So it seems that preparing with only one of these books is not sufficient.
I didn't find too many mistakes in the McGraw Hill book.
Opposed to the OCP 11 g Upgrade book from S. Alapati... But let's not get into the pain it was to prepare using this book...
    Kind regards,
    David

  • Need Info Regarding Unix Scripts for DBA's

    Hi,
I'm a oracle DBA with little knowledge of Unix.
I wanted to write some shell scripts which will be helpful for DBA's regular activity.
As i'm a new to oracle with unix can any plese tell me what are all the activities can be done throgh Unix Shell Scripts also suggest me how to learn unix shell scripts quickly.
    Thanks in Advance

Maybe it is about time you leave your ideal world, and take a reality check.
You don't take into account, I would say all over the globe, with the likely exception of the University of Washington, companies unwilling to upgrade to a supported version of Oracle. Then there are companies who can't upgrade to a supported version of Oracle, as the third party sw doesn't support a supported version of Oracle.
Then there are companies who are unwilling to pay for OEM and/or database control.
My company can't afford to use OEM to manage all our customers.
Daniel, I think I know your answers. They are, and always have been highly unrealistic. You need to leave your paradise, and stop making people frustrated, because they have to stick with the (you so often use that word) paleolithic version of Oracle that has been presented to them.
    They simply have no choice.
In the Netherlands 50 percent of the customers use 10g, 25 percent 8i and 25 percent 9i. You can climb your hobbyhorse every day, many of them won't upgrade, simply because management doesn't want to upgrade, as it doesn't buy them anything, apart from support, which is considered unimportant, as the application 'works'.
Apart from that, your assertion scripts aren't portable across platform is not necessarily true when you start using Perl (comes with Oracle).
There are many tasks for which shell scripts are still mandatory.
In fact Rman is one of them. As Rman doesn't support variables, you can't use OEM to set up a script which uses a proper tag in the backup command.
You need scripting to reset an alert.
You need scripting to rotate the log file of a listener.
    Etc, etc, etc.

  • Solutions for DBAs and others!!!!!

    Hi,
    I'm following this discussion often.
And I'll try to answer questions as far as
    I can.
I'm working (developing) with Oracle for 5 years now and got hints from several sources.
One very good source is available to everyone here. It is Oracle Magazine. It is online and it provides the codetips. There are really great tips I use for my daily work.
Especially for DBA's there are several little scripts to show you the actual state of you r DB.
    Now the link

    Thanks for the suggestion.
One concern I have is this package is developed for v12.0. According to SAP, these action blocks will work in 12.1 but not in 12.2. I've tried to install it on 12.2. The configuration dialog are not working properly.
Have anybody succefully implemented this package on 12.2?
    Best regards,
    Arnold

  • Which is your favorite sharpen skill for image to print and to upload via web

    Hi
which is your favorite sharpen skill for photo ?
which skill do you use for a print or upload via web like flirck ,one exposure
    i like a lot this skill  http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/sharpen-an-image/photo-sharpening.html
i know what would you think ... every image has a sharpen skill
but i would like to know your favorite or more used for print or web upload
    thanks
    cheers

Personally I'm fond of working at an upsampled resolution then sharpening near the end of my workflow, then downsampling for use as a work product.
Example:  Work at double (or more) the pixel count you'll need for web publishing, sharpen fairly aggressively, then downsample.  That tends to get you highly detailed looking results that are cleaner of sharpening artifacts.
As far as just sharpening things, I invented my own set of actions that employ fractals...

'Getting started' shows the most commonly used DBA books from Oracle. Thanks for input, but I'm not a beginner to oracle. You do not have to be a beginner dba to read the oracle supplied documentation. I have read most of it (believe it or not), and still need it almost daily.
Yesterday I learned for exemple the very helpful FOLD_AFTER option in the sqlplus manual, which will help you to generate ddl statements...

  • Where can i download the oracle applications software for DBA

    Hi,
I want to know few things regarding oracle applications.
    1) What exactly is oracle applications
    2) Where can i download the oracle applications software
    3) I am currently working as oracle DBA, so i want to enhance the dba skills to oracle application, so where can i find further help, documentation related to oracle applications and dba related to that.

Oracle Applications is an integrated ERP solution, with Finance, Manufacturing and CRM modules. Please visit appsnet for further information.
Unlike other Oracle products, Oracle doesnot give free software downloads for Oracle Applications. They were once giving trial versions for about 40 USD. Now I am not sure, please check up Oracle website www.oracle.com. Look for link on "e-business suite" under the 'products' directory.
If you can get hold of documentation on 11i, you can check out System Administration and Application Object Library (AOL) modules, these fall in your area. You can find this on oracle website or metalink.
Be aware that general Oracle DBA on 8i or 9i is a different ballgame than managing 11i. Lot of websites are available for these harried people, and for more information, you can visit the websites www.appsdba.com, www.oncalldba.com or do a general google search.
If you can get hold of a book "OCP for Oracle Financials 11.0" by Christopher Allen and Vivian Chow, this has good documentation on above two modules. But this is in 11.0, not 11i.
    Hope this helps.
