SQL Native Client 11 (ODBC) - SQL Server 2012 - MS DTC - Transaction Promotion

Does the SQL Native Client (ODBC) resource manager support automatic transaction promotion? I don't see anyway to get this to work using the ODBC API or the MS DTC API.
I have a connection that enlisted into a local transaction (setting auto commit to false). Then I get another call that is part of the same transaction but to a different server. So I try to enlist the first connection handle into a new distributed
transaction but that fails with the error code 25000 - which seems to indicate that promotion is not possible. Am I missing some other API call?

For .Net yes. If you are using SQL Native client and ODBC - the Enlist keyword is not supported in the connection string. For .Net System.Transaction takes care of doing the promotion for you if required. What I am asking is how that is
achieved using SQL Native client API and the MS DTC using C++?

Error updating data source from SQL Server ODBC into SQL Native Client 10.0

I am converting Crystal 8.5 reports into Crystal XI release 2. The data source was ODBC using SQL Server 2000 and pointing to a stored procedure. In the new server the data source has to be ODBC again, but it uses the SQL Native Client 10.0 Driver, because the new server is SQL Server 2008. I have copied the same old stored procedure on the new server and it works fine as a data source to a brand new Crystal XI report. But when I am opening an existing 8.5 version crystal report and updating the data source to the new location I get the error message "Some tables could not be replaced, as no match was found in the new data source".
I thought I could tackle this error by creating a temporary data source using the standard ODBC SQL Driver linked to the SQL 2008 Server instead of the SQL Native Client 10 ODBC. So I first updated the crystal data source to link to this temp ODBC using SQL Driver and it worked fine. But after that, when I try to update the data source to link to the SQL Native Client 10 ODBC, I get the same error again.
So I guess that the problem is not the new server itself, but the switch between SQL Server ODBC and SQL Native Client 10 ODBC.
Does anyone know what's going on with this SQL Native Client 10 in updating crystal report data sources?

CR XI does not support that driver. Try selecting the Native driver or upgrade to CR XI R2 for free and use SP4, 5 and 6 and then FP 6.4 or upgrade to CR 2008 and SP 3 and Fix Pack 3.3

Remote Desktop Services that require Native SQL Server Client in Windows Server 2012?

I have somehow gotten really confused on this.. Is the Remote Desktop Connection Broker the only Remote Desktop Service that requires the SQL Native Client to be installed in Windows Server 2012 (r2) ?

If you plan on configuring RDCB in HA mode then the SQL native client is required. The other RDS role services do not require it.

Yes, the SQL Server Native client is backward compatible, means you can use Client 2008 or higher to connect to a SQL Server 2005.
With some limitations the client is also forward compatible, means you can use a client 2005 to connect to SQL Server 2008 and higher; but the client isn't aware of new server features.

ODBC Connection problem with SQL Native Client driver with CR 11

I am having an issue connecting my crystal reports to an ODBC connection that uses the SQL Native Client driver (Version 2005.90.2047.00). My reports work fine when using the SQL Server driver (Version 2000.85.3006.00). The ODBC connection is setup to use Integrated Windows Authentication and is defaulted to go to the correct database. When I test the ODBC connection in the 'ODBC Data Source Adminstrator' it connects fine.
The reports are trying to connect to stored procedures on a SQL Server 2005 database. I can log onto the ODBC connection in CR X1. When I try to set the Datasource connection for one of my reports to the ODBC connection I created, I get the following error:
'Some tables could not be replaced, as no match was found in the new data source. Please specify the table required for any unmodified tables.'
When I drill down to the SP and try to update the datasource location of the SP directly I get the following errors:
'Data Object cannot be opened/accessed'
and
'Unknown Database Connector Error'
As I said, I don't have any problems when using the SQL Server 2000 driver. One other thing to mention, when I initially connect to the ODBC connection in CR X1 with the SQL Native Client driver, it asks for a username and password. I leave these blank since I'm using Windows Authentication.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I just tried to create a new report using the native driver and there is no option to use Trusted Authentication. This would be why it's failing.
I don't believe we fully supported Native driver in Cr XI. Try downloading CR Xi R2 and install SP6 from this info:

In the Visual Foxpro table, I saw no READ ONLY settings.And also, there are
no delete permission grants and there is no user database sesssion concept.
The ODBC DSN for MYTABLE is setup as:
- Free Tables (not database)
- Null (checked)
- Deleted (checked)If you're using Visual Foxpro database(.DBC), you should see "Exclusive" option too. You can try check it, but I don't know whether your issue will disappear.

I tried it in my application and it worked. Changing:
result.setTitle(rs.getString("title"));
result.setProducer(rs.getString("producer"));
to:
result.setProducer(rs.getString("producer"));
result.setTitle(rs.getString("title"));
made the exception disapear and now my code works fine. I still dont know
exactly where the problem comes from.

How to set default SQL Native Client in SAP BO?

Hello,
is there any possibility to set default SQL Native Client? We must have two SQL NC installed unfortunately, 2005 and 2008. Issue is, that SAP BO chooses the 2008 by default and user must manually switch to 2005 to see pre-defined instances. Is there any way how to select SQL NC 2005 as default? Many thanks

Hi,
Try this procedures.
1. Dont open your SBO program.
2. Goto C:\Program Files\SAP\SAP Business One\Conf\ folder
3. Delete file b1-local-machine.xml
4. Log to SBO program.
5. Apply all necessary authentication then select SQL_2008 then log.
6. After logging exit to SBO program.
7. Re-log again if SQL_2008 is already in default.

Unable to Connect to SQL 2000 Instance from Windows Server 2012 environment

We have a windows server (TEST) 2012 environment , where our test SQL Server 2012 instance is hosted.
We have a different (DEV) Server (windows 2000) where a SQL Server 2000 instance is present.
When I RDP to our Windows Server 2012 box, I cannot connect to the SQL 2000 server instance from SQL Management Studio. (whereas I can connect to
the same server from my local machine which has windows 7 and SQL 2012 installed).
This is the error i see -
"A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name
is no longer available.) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)"
When run from SQL Agent Service from TEST (A Job which tries to connect to that SQL 2000 instance to read some data using SSIS) , we get the following
error -
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead
(recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.".
The same SSIS package runs successfully from my local machine.
Please, could someone advice how to resolve this situation?

Its just that we have legacy systems here in our company, who, for some reason haven't upgraded their older infrastructure, whereas they have set up new Windows 2012/SQL 2012 environments for the newer sql instances where they want to transition to !
Not sure what the solution is honestly. It is affecting our timelines now. The infrastructure team needs to take a decision now, as to what to do.
I do have to add, we were able to connect to these "older" servers from our Windows 7 client machines which have SQL 2012 - both from SQL management studio & SSIS (using OLE-DB Provider for SQL Server).

Can't restore SQL 2005 BAK to SQL 2008 R2 running on Server 2012

Hi there,
Preparing to switch from SQL 2005/Server 2003 to SQL 2008 R2 / Server 2012. Took a backup of the SQL database on 2005 (stored at a cloud backup provider nightly) and copied to the new machine. Unable to restore the .BAK file, with the error:
The media family on device <backup path> is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241)
Tried it with two different backup files from two different nights, same error. I understand that this error can show up when restoring to a lower version of SQL, but that's not the case here.
Also, I know this can occur if the BAK file is corrupt, and I can't verify that yet, but two in a row failed. I'm hoping our cloud solution isn't part of the problem somehow.
BAK file is 15 Gb in size, so don't have the ability to attempt the restore on the 2005 production server. Just not enough room, and can't afford to cause performance issues on that box anyway.
Anyone know of any way to get a better handle on what's going on, or, even better, how to resolve it?

Could you please tell me if Microsoft support running the APP-V Client on a Windows Server 2012 image bundled as Windows 8 in a VDI solution?

Bundled as Windows 8?? I'm assuming you mean RDSH?
If so, yes. You need to download and use the RDS version of the App-V Client.
If for some reason you actually mean a Windows 8 machine then also yes, you just use the Desktop version of the client. Both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 are supported in App-V, so you shouldn't have a problem.

Clients Backup on Server 2012 Essentials Encrypted?

Hello, I would like to backup a client running win 7 ultimate, with encryption and bit locker enabled onto Server 2012 Essential.
I am just wondering if the backup on the server will continue to be encrypted? If not is there a way to keep the backup secure? Thanks!

Let me just check that I understand.
The Windows 7 Client is Bitlocker Encrypted
The 2012 Essentials is Bitlocker Encrypted.
My understanding of BitLocker is limited, but as I believe it only protects the machine when it is offline, ie, protects from someone attempting to put the drive(s) in another machine and access the data, or before Windows has booted.
In that respect, the backups are protected.
The backups themselves are stored in a database which is only accessible/useable by Essentials, it is not a normal WindowsImageBackup type folder. However that Client Backup folder can be moved to another essentials Server and effectively compromised, however
this would need to be done either from a running server that someone gained access to, or by copying the data while windows is offline, see above on that.
So really it is a question of what you are trying to mitigate. Is it an internal attacker who restores data they should not have access to? (requires admin permissions)
Or is it someone stealing a computer?
You can of course backup the server to Bitlocker Enabled drives.
