10.4.11 Unix command to "Exclude simple hostnames"...does one exist?

Is there a Unix command we can send to a 10.4.11 client to set "Exclude simple hostnames"? The networksetup tool doesn't seem to include one.
Thanks,
Don

Hi Andy,
Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Proxies > Exclude simple hostnames
Proxy servers are used in most enterprise environments. We want to bypass he proxy for internal hosts (webservers, fileservers, etc.). By checking "Exclude simple hostnames", Mac OSX should (but doesn't always, unfortunately) bypasses he proxy server.
We have a command we push out that sets DNS, search domain, passive mode, enables/sets proxy server for the various protocols, turns off AppleTalk, etc., but there doesn't seem to be a way to check the "Exclude simple hostnames" checkbox using a Unix command.
If a Unix command doesn't exist, I'll see if I can use the manifest editor to handle it...would rather not go that route though...
Thanks,
Don

  • Newbie: how to handle pipes and semicolons while launching UNIX commands?

    Good afternoon,
    I am trying to write a Java class that can launch UNIX commands.
    Launching simple commands (date, ps -ef) works fine, but when I start using pipes and semicolons, it goes wrong:
    Java code (pipe example):
            String command = "ps -ef | grep config";
            Process child = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);Result:
    usage: ps [ -aAdeflcjLPy ] [ -o format ] [ -t termlist ]
            [ -u userlist ] [ -U userlist ] [ -G grouplist ]
            [ -p proclist ] [ -g pgrplist ] [ -s sidlist ]
      'format' is one or more of:
            user ruser group rgroup uid ruid gid rgid pid ppid pgid sid taskid
            pri opri pcpu pmem vsz rss osz nice class time etime stime
            f s c lwp nlwp psr tty addr wchan fname comm args projid projectJava code (semicolon example):
            String command = "date;ps -ef";
            Process child = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);Result:
    date;ps: not foundClearly the pipes and the semicolons are handled by the UNIX shell and cannot be put in the Java source code as such.
    Does anybody know a way around this?
    Thanks
    Dominique

    Pipes and semicolons are interpreted by a shell (bash, csh etc) and when one executes as you are doing no shell is involved. This is easy to solve by using the alternate version of exec() which takes an array as an argument and to use your shell of choice. For example :-
    String[] command = {"bash", "-c", "date;ps -ef"};Note that the third argument is the whole of the command to be interpreted.
    Two points to consider. First you should read, digest and implement all the recommendations in http://www.javaworld.com/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html; failure to do so will at some point lead to significant loss of hair. Second you should probably use ProcessBuilder rather than Runtime.exec(). Behind the scenes Runtime.exec() uses ProcessBuilder but ProcessBuilder provides a better interface with more features.

  • Cannot Drag and Drop Computer Name onto saved unix command

    I am using ARD 3.3. When trying to drag a computer from Scanner to a Unix command on the sidebar, it does not populate in the task. You have to manually open the command, and then drop into the Computer list. Deleting the com.apple.remotedesktop.plist will correct the problem for about 1 day, but then it goes back to normal. Is there a setting that I am overlooking?
    Thank you.

    I reinstalled ADE and also changed the USB port I was using. No problems.
    I've called BN tech support twice and they've been very helpful.

    Hi there, I'm a beginner in using Terminal. I've searched all over the place but couldn't find a complete reference for the commands. Does one exist? Any ideas on the best reference(s)?
    Most likely not a complete reference.
    Most commands are covered by 'man' pages (but not all).
    man -k subject
    can be used search available man pages.
    I suppose
    man -k " "
    should give a list of all the commands.
    And knowing the commands is not the same as knowing how to use them. You will need to find information on using the 'bash' shell, otherwise you are going to miss a lot.
    'bash' is covered by "man bash", but again that does not tell you how to combine the commands to do useful work. In some ways, no book or web page can tell you that. Only using the commands in scripts while attempting to do real tasks will teach you those skills.

  • How to generate a empty file in AL11 using ABAP and unix command

    Hi Experts,
    when load infopackage triggers it will search file from AL11 if file is available it will get loaded successfully.  When there is no file in AL11 error while opening file (orgin A) and the load will fail.  At this level i have to write a abap code using unix command to generate a empty file.
    Is there any way to achieve the above requirement.
    Thanks
    Vara

    Hi,
    If i get your requirement properly then you want to create a blank file if there is no file on the application server so that your infopackage does not fail, am i correct.
    If this is your requirement then this can be easily done if you use process chain to load the file via infopackage. Follow the following steps:
    1. Add a ABAP program before the infopackage and check if the file is present on the server or not. Use a simple ABAP statement OPEN DATASET <FNAME>. Check the SY-SUBRC after this statement if it is not 0 then it means that the file does not exist on the application server.
    2. Once you have established that the file is not present create a flat file using a code similar to the below one
    OPEN DATASET FILENAME FOR OUTPUT IN TEXT MODE
                          MESSAGE D_MSG_TEXT.
    IF SY-SUBRC NE 0.
      WRITE: 'File cannot be opened. Reason:', D_MSG_TEXT.
      EXIT.
    ENDIF.
    * Transferring Data
    LOOP AT INT_table.
      TRANSFER INT_table-field1 TO FILENAME.
    ENDLOOP.
    * Closing the File
    CLOSE DATASET FILENAME.
    3. Add your infopackage step after this ABAP program in your process chain.
    I hope this helps.

  • Call an interactive UNIX command from java

    Hi,
    I want to call a UNIX command from java. When issue the command 'htpasswd -c filename username' on UNIX terminal, it asks for the new password and the then confirmation password again (yeah, unfortunately the htpasswd installed on our system does not allow you proivde the password on the command line. So have to work interactively ). Now, I have written a simple java program RunCommand.java. I am hardcoding the password for the htpasswd command in the file (in the real situation, password will be generated dynamically). I want to issue 'java RunCommand' on the UNIX command line and get back the command prompt without being asked for the password twice. The code is below, but the Outputstream does not work as expected. It always asks for inputs. Any idea? Many thanks.
    import java.io.*;
    public class RunCommand {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
    String s = null;
    try {
    String cmd = "htpasswd -c filename username ";
    // run a Unix command
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    BufferedReader stdInput = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
    BufferedReader stdError = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(p.getErrorStream()));
    OutputStream stdOut = p.getOutputStream();
    String pswd = "mypassword";
    while ((s = stdInput.readLine()) != null) {
         s = stdInput.readLine();
         stdOut.write(pswd.getBytes());
         stdOut.flush();
    System.out.println("Here is the standard error of the command (if any):\n");
    while ((s = stdError.readLine()) != null) {
    System.out.println(s);
    stdOut.close();
    stdInput.close();
    stdError.close();
    System.exit(0);
    catch (IOException e) {
    System.out.println("exceptions caught: ");
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.exit(-1);

    There are only about 9 billion responses a day on how to do this. Use the search feature.

  • Run Unix command from PLSQL

    I am trying to execute simple Unix command such as (/UItools/touch test.txt or /UItools/cp t1.txt t2.txt ) from PL/SQL. Could somebody pls help?

    Hi,
    you can use DBMS_PIPE to achieve this
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION exec_host_command( lc_cmd IN VARCHAR2 )
    RETURN INTEGER IS
    ln_status NUMBER;
    lc_errormsg VARCHAR2(80);
    lc_pipe_name VARCHAR2(30);
    BEGIN
    lc_pipe_name := ‘HOST_PIPE’;
    dbms_pipe.pack_message( lc_cmd );
    ln_status := dbms_pipe.send_message(lc_pipe_name);
    RETURN ln_status;
    END;
    Alternatively you can write a java stored procedure to do the same
    CREATE OR REPLACE AND COMPILE JAVA SOURCE NAMED "Cmd" AS
    --==========================================================--
    -- Class Cmd
    --==========================================================--
    import java.io.BufferedReader;
    import java.io.InputStreamReader;
    public class Cmd {
    *Static method to invoke host system commands
    *input variable String Command
    *Returns int. 0 for success and any other number
    *for failure of the command
    public static int executeCommand(String s_command) {
    try {
    /*Get the runtime shell and execute the system command
    *Wait till the command is executed
    final Process pr = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(s_command);
    pr.waitFor();
    return pr.exitValue();
    catch (Exception ex) {
    System.out.println(ex.getLocalizedMessage());
    return -1;
    }/*End of function executeCommand*/
    SHOW ERRORS
    EXIT;
    Grant the permissions
    --Grant Host File permissions to the APPS schema
    DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission ('<USER>', 'java.io.FilePermission',
    '<<ALL FILES>>', 'read ,write, execute, delete');
    --Grant Runtime Write permissions to the APPS schema
    DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission ('<USER>', 'SYS:java.lang.RuntimePermission',
    'writeFileDescriptor', '');
    --Grant Runtime Read permissions to the APPS schema
    DBMS_JAVA.grant_permission ('<USER>', 'SYS:java.lang.RuntimePermission',
    'readFileDescriptor', '');
    and create a wrapper plsql call
    FUNCTION Cmd (p_command IN VARCHAR2)
    RETURN NUMBER
    AS LANGUAGE JAVA
    NAME 'Cmd.executeCommand (java.lang.String) return int';

  • Permission denied when I execute a unix command from within my java applet.

    Hi Gang,
    Forgive me if this is not the appropriate forum for this problem. I'm posting this problem on this forum since I got no answers on the other forum I posted on.
    I've written a simple java applet that runs a unix command and then displays some information. The applet compiles fine, and runs perfectly from the command line on my unix system.
    However, when I point a browser at the applet from my desktop PC I get the following error as taken from the java console:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-2" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission <<ALL FILES>> execute)
    This is of course the first line in a long line of error messages. It appears that I am not able to execute a command on the unix system through my applet. I know the problem is with trying to execute a unix command since commenting it causes no error in the web browser. This is the command I'm using in java to execute the unix command:
    p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("ps");
    Here's the html file on the unix system:
    <html>
    <head></head>
    <body>
    <appletcode=G.class height="250" width="400">
    Your browser does not support the applet tag.
    </applet>
    </body>
    </html>
    I won't list the java code since it is compiling and working on the command line. But, if you want to see it I'll provide it.
    I've done quite a bit of research on this and it seems that a great number of people have similar problems reading or executing files through java. I have yet to find a solution to this problem.
    Here are some details about my setup:
    Server:
    HP9000 running HP/UX 11.23
    Apache Web Server 2.0.35
    Java 1.5
    Desktop PC:
    Win2K Pro
    Internet Explorer 6

  • Need a unix command

    Hi all,
    I just can't figure this out... I need a unix command that will backup any file matching a specific file extension AND the directory structure those files are in into a separate directory or volume. In other words, let's say that I have the files and directory structure below. I want to backup all of the txt files as separate files (not a tar archive) without writing the img files, without overwriting one txt file with another, and preserving the directory structure.
    foo/bar/a.txt
    foo/bar/b.txt
    foo/bar/a.img
    foo/bar/b.img
    foo/me/a.txt
    foo/me/b.txt
    foo/me/a.img
    foo/me/b.img
    foo/me/you/a.txt
    foo/me/you/b.txt
    foo/me/you/a.img
    foo/me/you/b.img
    I've read the man pages for ditto and rsync... they're geared toward backing up every file in a directory, and so they're not very clear about how to backup one single file type/extension.
    Everytime I try different varients of the rsync command, I either get errors "rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-24.1/rsync/main.c(717)", or file not found, or it overwrites the 'a.txt' with a different 'a.txt' without preserving the directory structure.
    Can someone give me the exact syntax for backing up the .txt files in the example above to an external disk (e.g. /Volume/backup)???
    Thanks!

    OK... my example was oversimplified. There are tons of different types of files in my directories (*.img, *.gif, *.etc), and I only want to cp one type (e.g., .txt).
    So, I started with the --include flag using the following command:
    rsync -nav --include *.txt foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    the result listed every file in foo (e.g., *.txt, *.img)
    I thought that perhaps the \*.txt should be *.txt
    rsync -nav --include *.txt foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    the result listed every file in foo (e.g., *.txt, *.img)
    rsync -nav --include "*.txt" foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    again, the result listed every file in foo (e.g., *.txt, *.img)
    Clearly, the --include flag wasn't working as I expected it to work. So, I decided to try the --exclude flag:
    rsync -nav --exclude "*.img" foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    Now, the results listed every file in foo except the *.img files.
    I needed to exclude other files as well, so I tried:
    rsync -nav --exclude "*.img *.etc" foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    Now, the results listed every file in foo INCLUDING the *.img files. So, adding additional file types within quotes broke the original command.
    rsync -nav --exclude *.img *.etc foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    Now, I get the error "rsync: link_stat "/Volumes/HD/foo/*.etc" failed: No such file or directory (2)"; and all .etc files are still included
    Now I tried:
    rsync -nav --exclude *.img --exclude *.etc foo/ /Volumes/baz/
    Now, this excluded both *.img and *.etc files. I have about 20 file types other than *.txt ... there has to be some other way!!!

  • How can I import eex files into Applications EUL from the unix command line

    How can I import *.eex and *.dis files into an Applications EUL from the unix command line?
    Thanks

    Hi
    The simple answer is you either have to use the client tool DIS51ADM to import files using the command line (Discoverer Admin is a windows only client tool), or the Java command line which needs a browser.
    In theory if you have a browser running on your Unix box you may be able to use the Java command line to make this work.
