10.5.7 Translator and mds processes running at 100%

Hi,
Since 10.5.7 installation I've had a couple processes that decide to operate at high CPU load with no apparent cause. With no applications running I've had Translator and or mds operate at 100% CPU load, making most other operations impossible.
I am aware that mds is linked to Spotlight and placing my system disk into the Spotlight privacy list seems to temporarily solve the mds problem. However, the Translator issue is different. Once it starts drawing high CPU load it will not stop. I've tried to quit the process and it leads to a OS freeze. With or without trying to quit it, it leads to having to do a hard reset as soft resetting or shut down is also frozen.
I first installed 10.5.7 from software update. After seeing issues I tried other's suggestions to use the combo update. This seemed to work momentarily, until the same issues started popping up again. Anyone have similar issues? I don't think I'm the only one ... I hope!

Translator is linked to the Address Book and sync services with MobileMe... I've had it crashing since 10.5.5 Doesn't seem to actually do anything as all my data is synced correctly. Go figure! Here're a couple of lines from this morning's system log.

  • Maill freeze and mds process

From this afternoon, mail.app hang just after launch... I got the colored whell that spin for very long time (more than 2 hours now)...
Looking at running process i see Mail with 95% of CPU and MDS (spotlight) for 30%... Mal.app is also displayed in red (in process list) with a note:do not answer (my system is french, i translate).
Very strange, of course i allreadey kill mail.app several times and also restart the computer.
Nothing change, each time a launch mail, it start display normally can bu used for severals seconds, then each accound start displaying the little spinning icon (showing it was connecting to the server) then the colored spinning wheel of the death appear and nothing can be done from that...

I complete the diagnostic, mail.app is not completly freeze if a do Cmd+Q mail quit after a 1 minute !
If i do Cmd-H (Hide), mail hide after a few minutes and suddenly do not ise processing power !
If i click on mail then (after hiding) i reapear and restart using 100% of 1 CPU (so do MDS process) !
So it's very strange it seems Mail and MDS use intensive processing power only when mail is displayed !
And mail is not completly down but very-very slow : each action take about 1 minute.

  • How to have Weblogic and BAM process run in background

I ssh to the Weblogic (also the BAM) server via putty and use below command to start the weblogic and BAM:
    /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/startWebLogic.sh
    /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin/startManagedWebLogic.sh bam_server1
And then I have no way to have the weblogic and BAM run in backgroup as it needs to ask me for login and password. I cannot close the ssh connection neither otherwise the weblogic and BAM processes will die
    Clay

    Hi Clay,
Both these points can be easily handled.
To start admin server enter the below command with the &. This & will make the process run in background.
    . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/startWebLogic.sh &
If you want the logs to be redirected to some file then you can use a nohup as given below
    nohup . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/startWebLogic.sh &
Same holds good for bam serevr also
    . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin/startManagedWebLogic.sh bam_server1 &
    OR
    nohup . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin/startManagedWebLogic.sh bam_server1 &
It will respond to you with the process-id, you can just hit an enter and safely close the putty session while the server is still up & running.
To stop the same, in a new putty session you can enter the below. Here you need not(will not) give &
    . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/stopWebLogic.sh weblogic welcome1 t3://hostname:port
    . /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin/stopManagedWebLogic.sh bam_server1 t3://hostname:port
    Password:
As you see above we are not passing user-id/password while starting the server. We need to create a file named boot.properties and place it in /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/servers/AdminServer/security directory. security directoy will not be present, you have to create it.
Contents of boot.properties file will be only 2lines as below
    username=weblogic
    password=welcome1
On next startup server will encrypt the password.
Same boot.properties file has to be created in /opt/oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains/base_domain/servers/bam_server/security location.
    Hope this answers your question.
    Thanks,

  • My iMac G5 powers on and runs fine for 20 to 60 minutes then locks up and all fans run at 100%

I thought my Hard drive had finally crashed and while replacing it (1TB Hitachi) I also replace the 512MB of RAM with 2 x 1Gb sticks of Crucial Memory.  While re-loading 10.4 the system locked up again and the fans started running at 100%.  I tried 3 more times and the same thing.  With in 20 to 30 minutes the system locks up and the fans roar.  I was told buy a friend the PSU had bad caps (all the MB caps look perfect) and I should replace it.  I purchased a used PSU from Ebay and this time I got the entire OS installed and 8 of the first 9 undates and then, it did it again.  I powered the iMac off and rebooted and now I get no bottom tool bar and in 50 to 60 minutes the same thing.  Please help, I am certified on Dell and HP but this iMac is driving me nuts.

Take a closer look at the logic board caps.  They dont have be totally blown open to be bad.
If you look closely and see that they are bulging just a small bit they are BAD.
These symptoms sound like bad logic board caps.

  • Finder crashing and mds process

Today Finder is freezing in column view when anything is selected to be viewed in the preview column. I've trashed prefs a number of times, run Disk Utility from the install dvd, nothing is working. Opened Activity Monitor and found a process called mds which is using anywhere from 50 to 80% of my CPU--it spiked when the Finder froze and didn't go back down until I forced quit the process. When I inspect it its parent process is launchd(1).
Can someone tell me what mds is/does and if it's related to my sudden Finder crashes? Thanks in advance.

It's what generates the metadata index used by Spotlight and Finder for searches. Finder->Help->Mac Help->Spotlight for details. That said, that shouldn't cause the Finder freezes. Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, then the original account has problems, most likely a corrupted/conficting preference file. Get Preferential Treatment and verify/repair both user and system prefs. If so, then the problem's system-wide and you should repair permissions, boot with your install disk and run Disk Utility. If these don't fix thing, reinstall the 10.4.6 Combo update, restart, launch Disk Utility and repair permissions, and restart.

  • After 10.6.3 upgrade: "translate" process running constantly

Just upgraded to 10.6.3 Since the upgrade a process called "translate" is running in in Activity monitor constantly. It's taking a pretty constant 99% CPU (out of 400% total on my 4-core).
I don't remember seeing that process before and it surely should not be sitting there eating up CPU.
As I write, it's been doing this for 8 or 9 hours.
    Regards,
    Peter G.

Have had the same problem with the translate process. My system got so bogged down and screwed up while I tried to correct this (with several calls to Apple Support) that I did a full system restore via Time Machine to 3/20/2010. The restore took 12.5 hrs due in large part to 10K+ photos on my hard drive, but after the restore, everything worked fine (no translate process running) until I got the auto-upgrade notice and upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (plus several other Apple apps)--again the translate process now runs at 99-100%. The only solution I can see until Apple fixes this is quit the process using the Activity Monitor via the CPU Usage screen. The positive point in all of this is that Time Machine works as advertised. I had tried to reinstall the OS from the installation disk, but the installation failed x3.

  • IWeb and the mds process

    Hi everyone,
Every time I use iWeb, the CPU usage goes up extremely high. Using iStat, I've discovered that the mds process is the cause of this. As soon as I close iWeb, the CPU goes back to normal.
I have no idea what the mds process is but iWeb is barely usable at the moment.
I would greatly appreciate any insight as to what the problem (and solution) is.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tobyn.

Tobyn ~ mds appears to stand for _metadata server_ and I think it provides Spotlight with the ability to index file updates in real-time. Why it thinks it needs to run so long when iWeb opens on your Mac, I don't know. While you wait for possible suggestions here, take a look at this thread:
    _Ever present mds_
...If the suggestions there don't help, you could post your own qstn in that same "Using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard" forum. If you like to do your own research, the following may help:

  • Mds and Web Process Question

Alright so i'm familiar with what mds is and what its intentions are, but my question is how often should it run, and when running, how long should it last?  I've had my macbook pro for about 4 months now and experienced something for the first time tonight.
-notice macbook is very warm to touch and sluggish. fans kick in to high gear, at this time i was only using pages and had 1 window open in safari.
-hop over to  istat nano to check it out
-mds is running at 50-90% of cpu and over 500 mb of ram
-this continued for a good 15-20 minutes before things calmed down
-web process was also over 180mb? not sure what usual numbers are.
-mds is still running over 150mb and its been almost an hour
-my hdd is 320gb and i've only used 30
Could be completely normal, Just wanting some opinions from the other mac addicts
    thanks

    YEP!
Crashplan was the culprit. I have updated CPPro.
    Using: http://download.crashplan.com/installs/mac/install/CrashPlanPRO/CrashPlanPRO_200 9-06-11.2.dmg
Make sure you get the right updater for the right version of CP (there are 3 in total): CrashPlan, CrashPlan Pro and CrashPlan Hosted Pro.
Everything is back to normal now...
    Thanks!!!!

  • MDS and mdworker processes gone wild

Ever since I upgraded to Lion on my Macbook Pro I am getting intermittant periods where the MDS and MDWORKER processes completely take over the CPU and all apparent activity for minutes at a time. It's now been a week, so I'm quite sure Spotlight is done indexing the drive. What are my options?

I'm having the same problem you are, and I'm exploring options.
First I noticed that Backblaze (backup service) was causing the problem, but I fixed that by including the /library/backblaze folder in Spotlight's privacy area. The complete lockup that was causing is now no longer a problem.
However, I'm noticing that most of the cycles are going to indexing my Time Machine backups, which Spotlight will not allow in the privacy area. It looks like it's indexing many of my old mailbox files from mail.app that are backed up on the Time Machine (Time Capsule) disk. I really don't see the logic to this. I've had the computer on and idling with full access to Time Machine for many days now and this is still going on, with MacBook Pro fans running at full gun and CPU not quite maxing out, but frolicking between 5% and 65% or so on a regular basis with no other apps present. Activity monitor doesn't show anything else hogging cycles -- it's all mds and mdworker.
Something isn't right with this. I hope that the next update from Apple will fix this, or someone on the intertubes will come up with a quick solution.
All the above is on a MacBook Pro (late 2008). I do note that I have a MacBook Air (late 2010) that backs up to the same Time Machine but does NOT have Backblaze installed. (I put everything important on the MacBook Pro.) This machine does not seem to have these problems. Both computers are running Lion and have much of the same software. Backups are doing fine on both machines.
My temporary solution is to turn OFF Time Machine on the MacBook Pro. This does seem to make things much better -- although even at 5% CPU use the fan runs somewhat higher revs than I was used to with Snow Leopard. I then run a manual Time Machine cycle just before I turn in for the night. When I'm back to using the machine again, I make sure the Time Capsule is not mounted. I'm backing up any working files continually to Backblaze still, as well as to Dropbox, so cutting the Time Machine frequency down to once or twice a day is not too bad for now. I do not want this to continue, however.
Also, I have done the following: Repaired disk permissions, reset the SMC and PRAM, and started the computer up in safe mode fully, and then restarted in regular mode.
If anyone has any possible fixes, I'm listening and thanks!

  • Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
    Thank You!
I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
    I have:
Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it?

  • Firefox window is not shown and not even in the tasks bar, but there is a process running in the task manager

Clicked on the Firefox icon , but window did not appeared, checked in the Task manager, there is a process running with firefox.exe, and could not see any icon in the task bar adjacent to start button

I discovered that when the "Firefox is already running . . . ." message pops up I can fix it by doing the following [note: I get the same message for the Thunderbird e-mail program too] : 1. I open 'TASK MANAGER" and click on the "Processes" tab. 2. Next I scroll down until I see Firefox.exe *32 in the leftmost column (or Thunderbird. exe *32 if the message came up there), highlight that line by clicking on it and then click on the "end process" button on the right side on the bottom. 4. A pop-up window will come up but ignore its message and click on the "end process" button in the pop-up window. The program should then start the next time you click on the icon..
While that saves the need to restart your PC to fix the problem, I have yet to find any information as to the reasons for those two processes to show up in the first place. I'm running the 64 bit Win 7 Professional and do not know if that has something to do with those two processes running from time to time or not. The message comes up often but not all the time and I haven't been able to pinpoint any action on my part where the message comes up if I do '''X '''or the message never comes up when I do '''Y''' before closing Firefox or Thunderbird.
