Wondering how to fix the issue.
    Thanks

You'll have better luck posting this in the database forum. This one is specifically for "Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server", which is a client side service that helps in the recovery of in doubt distributed transactions. It sounds like you're having a database issue.

  • Why are some DBA's averse to using ASM?

We are upgrading to 11GR2 from 10G and are looking at the pros and cons of using ASM vs AIX JFS2. We are currently on HP-UX on Itanium and it's easy to guess why we are considering moving to AIX. We only have single instance databases and have no plans for using RAC. Half the DBA's in our organization are averse to using ASM citing complexity among other reasons. We asked a few other DBA's in other organizations we knew and were told that they too only use ASM for RAC and avoid it for single instance databases. I think ASM should be used for all Oracle databases esp 11G due to the obvious benefits.
I looked at the polling for ASM on this forum and see that more DBA's are now using ASM for Single Instance Databases. But then I wonder why many don't? Any comments are appreciated.

Just an aside comment ... it's easy to guess why you are leaving Itanium, but not so easy o guess why moving to AIX. It has some quirks of its own, and you are still paying for dedicated hardware software. why not move to Oracle Linux on commodity hardware? No, I'm not a sales guy, and have not vested interest. But given that Linux is all but free and you can run it on generic hardware, the cost argument is pretty compelling. As for the technical merits of AIX, I've used it and have no complaints, but it is surprising how often the oracle docs have to include side notes pointing out special considerations for AIX vs. any other *nix.

  • My credit money is going down by $2 every time i use an app?

Every time i use an app on my phone, my credit money goes down by $2. The apps don't require an internet connection, why is my credit money going down? Are the apps eating my credit money? Or is it something else? I don't even know which app is doing it, i;m now scared to use any app because my credit just keeps going down!! Some body please help!!

    Do two things:
    1.  In Settings > iTunes & App Stores, turn off automatic downloads for Apps.
    2.  Assuming you sync using iTunes, turn off the automatic app syncing on the App tab when you have the iPads connected that should not receive the downloads.

Ok Fellas, let me give you a clue:  Games, particularly those that make heavy use of graphics and sound are notoriously power hungry.  In fact, when I was in the Navy many years ago, the folks working on the NTDS (Navy Tactical Data System)  computers used a version of Space Invaders to load test the AN/UYK-43 computers.
I have also noticed that all of my laptops (I have a brand new Toshiba dual core, an older Toshiba single core, plus 2 Dell dual core machines) have significantly shorter battery life when I play Company of Heroes than when I am just reading e-mail or surfing the 'Net.  I have also noticed the same behavior when I play games on my 4th gen Touch and my iPhone 4.
The fact is, iOS 5 did make some major improvements as well as adding some nice functionality like iMessage, wireless synch, and such, but the down side is that depending on how you use the device battery life can be shorter that what you may have experienced with pervious versions of iOS.  Its just the nature of the beast...

  • Using ASM in Oracle 10g

    Hi all,
I'd like to learn using ASM (Automatic Storage Management) feature in Oracle 10g using a single PC. As far as I know, I need hardware of disk array.
Is it possible to use ASM feature in Oracle 10g in a normal PC? or by using the normal IDE harddisk? or by using external USB hardisk? or by using any software emulator?
I would highly appreciate any guideline.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ahmed B.

You can find the for windows also on the same site. Below is the link:

Help!! I'm using a Mid 2012 MBP retina 2.3Ghz i7 with 8GB of ram 256SSD. for the past 2 years my write speeds has been consistently on 400MB/s and up via black magic test. but now it only have 100MB/s going down to 80MB/s. what should I do???? I have already cleaned and even restored my MBP still it's on 100MB/s. please help. I have to finish tasks on a timely manner.

No. This requires completely repartitioning the SSD. You can do that only by using the Network Recovery method or the method I outlined. My method preserves all your data and doesn't require doing a slow Network Recovery. But if you wish to do that instead. The purpose of the whole exercise is to "clean" the SSD of garbage collected during use that tends to cause the SSD to slow down as you've described.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button. Set Zero Data - one-pass, click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • User-managed backups of a 10g DB using ASM

Is it possible to do user-managed backups of a 10g database which is using ASM?
When I run the following SQL command
    SELECT NAME FROM v$datafile;
    It returns
    +DBDATA/db_test/datafile/system.256.617633575
    +DBDATA/db_test/datafile/users.259.617633757
The ASM is setup in 'normal redundency' across 2 partitions, both of which are not formatted.
If there is anyone who has done user-mangaged backups on a 10g DB using ASM who could provide an insight I would be greatful.
Basically what I would like to know is how do I access the datafiles, so I can back them up to a location of my choosing?

I think it's a good product, we use it for many years now. A big advantage is Backtrack automates not only backups (that do all products), it also provides automatic restore/recovery in many cases (not in all!). That means the product detects what is wrong with the database and automatically performs all necessary steps to bring back the database to working. In case of trouble that's good for operators by night and also good for the DBA, who does not need to come.
Disadvantage (may be true for all 3rd party products) Backtrack is always behind Oracle's newest technology, so it took some time to support ASM and it's still not a full support.
There's no problem with online backups, Backtrack uses the traditional way (ALTER TABLESPACE BEGIN BACKUP .... END BACKUP), they don't use RMAN technology in the background.
We use both in our company, Backtrack and RMAN. Besides the technical point of view, there's also a license issue. Backtrack's license fee is due to amount of data, the larger your databases the larger the fee.

I'm having some problems with my ipad and charging it. I am having to leave it in charge for a lot longer, but when I take it out and want to use it the battery is still not completely full and goes down a lot faster than usual. The other day, I had charged  my iPad overnight so that I could take it to university with me for the day, and when I had switched it on the next day the battery was on 5% and I had not used it since charge.

Your battery may be dying. THey are only good for so many charges/discharges. If you have an apple store near by make an appointment and have them check itout

You likely first configured the AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only, correct?
If yes, you cannot then connect the AirPort Express using Ethernet....that will crash your network.
The Express must be configured to "create a wireless network".  AirPort Utility will do this for you automatically, but you will first need to perform a Factory Default Reset or Hard Reset on the AirPort Express and then start over with the configuration again.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the Express before you open AirPort Utility. Post back if you need more tips on how to set this up.

  • My battery goes down, even without using the iPad and locking it

I've got an iPad 2 with the smart cover, but it's battery goes down quite quickly, even without using it and having locked it.

When the screen is dark, it's still on, unless you've completely powered down.  So, things that can cause battery drain (just to name a few) could include:
    1.  Searching for a WiFi or 3G signal if not locked on to one.......
    2.  Having push on for mail, causes the iPad to seek new mail messages, eating up battery power
    3.  Having location services on can eat up battery power
If you want to preserve the battery, shut it down when it's not going to be used for a few hours.  And if you've got a WiFi version and you're not in one place, turn WiFi off, so your iPad isn't constantly searching for a WiFi signal.

  • HANA DB - what if db goes down, how to monitor/alerting using Studio

I have configured mail alerts for my hana db instance (for certain / all events).
If I stop my db (instance) I still do not get any alerts because I assume there are no specific events to be set for monitoring/alerting purpose in case hana db itself goes down. Is this a normal behavior in HANA as the db itself has monitoring/alerting capability? If yes then how will a DBA get to know if the db goes down.
Please correct me if I am missing something while setting alerting mechanism.

Also would want to know if there are issues with the latest rev. SP7 w.r.t alerts and hdbstatisticsserver service under Landscape?
I have observed the hdbstatisticsserver (and daemon.ini) doesnt come up on its own after db instance is restarted.
FYI: I have HANA Instance on Linux VM (sandbox).

  • 10g w/ASM on RHEL4 with LDAP/AD db user

    Hi folks,
I'm a bit green at all this Oracle stuff (though I'm pretty experienced with Linux) and I'm currently trying to install Oracle 10g on a 64-bit RHEL 4 AS box, using ASM. This box is currently also running 9i happily. I am running into a couple of problems which may or may not be related:
Firstly, I've installed the asmlib stuff and it will all run fine (pick up and configure disks on my SAN over fibrechannel etc.) apart from the service/interface configuration - for various reasons I need to have my oracle DB user authenticate against LDAP (active directory in this instance) like all my other users do (and this works fine in 9i) - I don't expect this is a problem for the DB install itself (though I've not gotten that far - I don't have a 10g DB installed yet.) but the config script for ASM will not accept any of my LDAP users as valid, and hence won't set the appropriate permissions on the /dev/oracleasm stuff etc (and doing so manually doesn't seem to solve problem 2) - is there a way around this? Is it a restriction just of the config script or can the service just not cope with non-local users?
The second problem is that even with ASM disks configured, when I go to do an install with runInstaller, and select the configuration of ASM, it can't find any disks to add regardless of what path I give it to look in. I assume this is related to the problems with ASM above, but perhaps there's something else going on?
    Hope y'all can help.
    Thanks,
    -Nathan

There are no users for ASM per se. You don't connect as Fred/fred since no-one ever logs into it directly. It's only a storage subsystem.
the only time you would connect is if you needed to go in as the SYSDBA or SYSOPER role to start it up, shut it down or do maintenance.
When it is up and running and doesn't see your disks there is a good troubleshooting note
457369.1 which might help. usually diskstring needs to be set.

  • Auto start of db when it goes down

Is there any way using script to start database when it goes down due to some unexpected reason on windows platform?
    Oracle 10g
    Windows 2003 Server

    Hi,
Create your own batch script that does the below things
    1) Make a connection to Oracle to see if database is up.
    2) If not then start the database.
I would be better checking why Oracle database is going down too frequent rather doing auto start.
