16:9 Footage / 4:3 Intro

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I recently got FCE HD after I downgraded from FCP HD 4.X. I had created a custom intro, lower thirds, and backgrounds in FCP. I shoot all of my footage in 16:9 and always have shot it like that even when using FCP HD.
Well now in FCE HD, I edit in Composition View and my footage looks great. I opened up an old FCP project to grab my custom intro (didn't want to create it again, because it took hours) and it is in 4:3. I don't understand what happened. In FCP HD it filled the screen and then when it got to the 16:9 footage it would have the black bars on top and bottom.
Now in FCE HD the 4:3 intro has black bars on the sides and the 16:9 footage takes up the entire screen. I don't know how to correct this issue. Suggestions would be great!

Ok, here are some examples:
This is with FCP HD 4.X

I just started using FCP HD 4.X with whatever the default was and the sames goes with FCE HD. Based on your question, I'm lead to believe that FCP was setup in 4:3 and FCE is setup in 16:9. Take a look at the pics and see if that helps explain what I mean at all.
With the FCP with the footage pic, there is black bars on top and bottom. With the segment piece it fills the entire screen.
With FCE the footage pic has NO black bars on top and bottom, but with the segment piece there is black bars on the sides.

  • Edit and save without reencoding?

I have a bunch of lectures in mp4 format which I need to add to add identical intro/outro sections to. I do that in QTPro, and save - nice and quick and no reencoding. Unfortunately it saves it as a .mov instead of .mp4, and the only way I've found of getting the mp4 back mp4 is to export and have to reencode the entire thing!
It seems like such a waste when I'm only adding a couple of seconds footage. The intro, outro and lecture are all encoded indentically with H.264.
Is there a way to combine multiple .mp4 clips in QTPro and save the resulting file as an mp4 without having to reencode the whole thing again?

The .mov file extension is just a "wrapper" for the codecs found in the file.
QuickTime Player Pro will always "Save As" in a .mov container.
Nothing to worry about. The file is the same even if the file extension is different.

  • Premiere runs slower after 2014 and OSX updates

Question: Has anyone experienced a decrease in performance after updating to the 2014 versions on their CC software? I recently updated this and my Mac's OS to Mavericks. I would like to narrow down the field in order to discover what is causing this problem.
    System info:
    Footage Info: 2 cameras - Panasonic GH3 and Nikon D7100, 1920x1080 29.97p, h.264 .mov files
Project: Series of 11 videos ranging from 3 - 4 minutes.
    Includes:
Interviews on green screen (possible issue, I address this further down)1 - 3 interviews per video with 2 cameras for each interview. Cameras have separate comps = 2 dynamically linked comps per interview resulting in 2 - 6 comps with keyed footage
Standard broll, intro/outro/lower third screen comps linked with AE
1 audio track, premixed with interview audio and music
Problem: Since updating my version of OSX as well as my CC software I have had a significant decrease in performance when editing in Premiere Pro with dynamically linked AE comps. The performance issue ranges from the program monitor taking minutes to update after adjusting effects or scrubbing through the timeline (or just clicking on a new point to see the single frame previewed) all the way to my computer freezing or even PP restarting itself (never happened to me before). Also, export times have increased exponentially. Prior to these updates I was able to export a 4 minute video with multiple dynamically linked comps in around 30 minutes. After updating it is taking over 4 hours to export a 3 minute video with similar effects.
    Possible causes/items for discussion:
The 2014 update added new effects to Keylight in AE (what I used to key the footage). Also this is the first project I have done using keyed footage through dynamically linked comps. Does the Keylight effect require significantly more power to operate?
I am working with projects that I had started prior to the 2014 update. Normally I would not have updated mid project, but with increased benefits to Keylight as well as adding the ability to edit dynamically linked lower third text directly from PP (huge time saver), I decided it was worth it.
    Extra notes:
I also added another monitor to my system recently. Could this have something to do with it?
After this issue I plan on acquiring the proper transcoding software and updating my workflow to rule those out in the future. I will also consider alternatives to working with dynamically linked comps. However, at this point I am purely interested in feedback regarding similar situations or suggestions as to what I could try to address this issue. Thank you for your input.

I spent more time looking into this and think I may have found a solution to my problem! This has been an extremely frustrating week for me and the performance issue has affected delivery to the client, so I wanted to post what I discovered here in case anyone else is hunting for this answer.
I found another thread that addressed the issue of working with comps in PP (Re: After effects CC on maverick slow render because of PP CC Dynamic Link Footage). They refer to it as power nap in that thread but I think what he meant was "App Nap" which limits resources to certain apps when they are not in use. There is more information here (How to Disable App Nap in OS X Mavericks - TekRevue). Preventing app nap seems to have sped things up for me. I am going to try exporting now and see if that goes any faster.

  • How do import footage off of a DVD into Premiere?

I'm helping a lady do a project that involves capturing video and importing pictures, etc. It's just like a little home video for her grandkids and family, for the intro of the video she wants to put in footage from a "Blues Clues" kids DVD (bascially the first 5 or 10 minutes of the DVD). Is this something you can do on Premiere 1.5? I'm guessing you would have to rip the video which I did try, but when I ripped it, I get a Video TS folder, is there a simple way to import that into Premiere? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Jason,
There is no direct way to do this. The VIDEO_TS folder will have one, or more .VOB files. What you are looking for is probably in the first of these. You might get lucky (.VOB files can contain a lot more than just the Video & Audio), and copy that VOB to your computer. Rename it with an .MPG extension, and try to Import that - might work for your purposes.
One could do a capture via a DVD deck, a capture card, or bridge, and the software that comes with the card. One could also use their video camera as a bridge, if it has pass-through capabilities. One could record from the DVD player WITH their video camera to tape and Capture this in Premiere.
Or, one could rip the DVD completely. This ARTICLE explains much of that.
Good luck. Premiere Elements does a much better job, with some VOB's than does PrPro.

  • Video intro to still Menu

    Hi all..
There is quite possibly a very obvious answer to this but a quick search here didnt reveal anything. My last DVD i made with a video intro (track) leading to a separate menu which graphically was like the last frame from the movie intro or opening track. It didnt flow smoothly as smoothly as i would like as there was a little flicker in the movement from the opening track to the main menu so this time i would like if possible to have the buttons appear at the end of the video intro where i have a background already prepared for the text. The video mv2 i have placed in the Menu to paly once. I understand how to make the overlay menu but i want it to come in at the end of the video clip. Is this possible?
Many thanks and sorry if this is a dumb question
    Dave

You are basically creating a motion menu with a loop point - your background footage needs to include the animation and the fade in of any button text, as Silal points out. You then need to hold the button text still (whether or not other parts of the menu continue to move) for AT LEAST 30 seconds - which should be long enough for the user to make a choice. Many DVDs hold the image still for a lot longer than this.
Take a frame from the section where the button text is still and use it as a background in photoshop. Add a new layer and create ONLY the objects that you want to be your button highlights - an underline, a star, a tick or dot... whatever. Hide the background layer and save the result out as a .pict file. You can use colours or gray scale, but you will only have four shades/tints in all to play with inside DVDSP. Import the .pict file (which will look mostly white with unconnected shapes that will line up with the menu text) into DVDSP.
Drop your motion sequence into a menu and look in the property inspector. Slide the 'loop point' control to a position just after where the button text has faded in and become still. Add the .pict file as the menu overlay and now treat it as a normal menu - draw out the button rectangles, assign targets, etc. You can use the property inspector to change the colours of the highlights if you need to.
When you return to this menu it will (by default) play from the very beginning, which means the user will see all of the animation again. You can use different techniques to ensure that they don't, depending on the version of DVDSP that you are using.
In v4 there is an option to return to the loop point - to use it you need to create a script and add the relevant command using the script editing tools. It is a one line script and you set the track end jump and/or menu call to point to the script. The user will then only see from the still portion onwards.
In earlier versions of DVDSP you do not have this command. You need to either create two menus, one with the animation and still section and the other with just the still section. The animated version is the first menu, but all jumps and menu calls go to the second menu so that the user only sees the still piece.
Alternatively you can get in to doing some post build editing using tools like DVDAfterEdit or MyDVDEdit. These allow you to break in to the codes for the DVD and add your own controls. It is a relatively simple matter to add in a conditional statement which sets a value after the menu has played once. If the value is set then all further jumps to the same menu will go to the loop point. Whilst it is relatively simple to do, it is not for the feint hearted... and as with any work like this you only ever do it on a copy and make sure it is working before you release it to your client. There are tutorials to help you do this if you want to try it, but I strongly suggest you use either of the other two approaches first!

  • Best Way to Export Movie to use in WebSite Intro??

    Hy everyone,
Im doing a animation with 20 seconds in After Effects. I wana use that animation in the intro of my WebSite that is most of it Flash AS3.
I wana ask u guys, what is the best format to export the video, so it dosent loose many Resolution, and not becoming to big the file so it will be fast to open from a link.
I hope i made myself understand, and That u can help me ^^

I'm successfully using F4V files to run footage on websites in a suitable player (JXTC Vtube Pro - Joomla sites).
Files are about 40MB per minute @ 1280x720 PAL. If you want to see an example of some AE graphics (simple stuff I might add - I'm a beginner in AE) you can find it on http://www.movingmemory.co.uk
The graphics promo piece was composed in 1440x1080 in AE and rendered out to .m4v then fine cut to the audio track in Prem Pro - I use a frame count on the audio at composition as a guide to sync. The final is then exported from Prem Pro to F4V at 1280x720p.
I find F4V a great solution for the footage I shoot, and doesn't eat up my websites' storage capacity.

  • How to batch add intro and banner?

I have about 40 video files for a course I've just produced (http://www.MasteringSocialSales.com), and I would like to...
Add a different title slide to each one, preferably by just listing the titles in a files or somewhere.
Add a footer banner to all videos
I could do this manually, but I'm looking for a consistent, automated, batch process. I think After Effects may do it, I was wondering what my options are?
    Thanks!

I would create the artwork for your 40 graphics in Photoshop, Illustrator or as a new AE comp. If created in Photoshop or Illustrator you can add all 40 graphics to the AE project Panel, select them all and then select Create Comp From Selection and Individual comps.
If you need to animate the graphics then create and save an Animation Preset for the first comp. From there it is a simple thing to select the footage layer in your other comps and apply the animation preset. You can even use the keyboard shortcut to do so.
Now Render these intros, or add your 40 edited videos to AE and simply nest the intros as a comp or edit the intros to the 40 videos in Premiere Pro. Once the original animation is completed and the animation preset made it would take less than an hour do set all the rest up.

  • Creating/buying an Intro Animation?

I would like to create or buy an intro movie that should be 5-8 seconds that will play before all my videos.
What software could be used to make such an intro?  Can you point me to any resources?
    Thanks,
    --Jeff

    Jeff,
PrE can do just that. Now, depending on what you are think about, you might need to incorporate material from other programs, like a 3D application, perhaps Photoshop, or others.
If you can outline the Intro, someone can give you tips on how to do that.
Also, if you need stock footage, say abstract graphics, check out the stock footage at Muvipix. They also have original music, that could be helpful That material is available for purchase, or is free with a subscription to Muvipix. It doesn't take many downloads, before the price of a subscription is paid for.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I have similar, as I do most of my DVD's with Dolby Digital 5.1 SS, and it includes some LFE SFX clips, plus title animation. I just output this Project to DV-AVI, and can Import it into any other Project, where it's the Intro.

  • Where can I find simple instructions on creating intros for my videos?

I would like to create intros for my videos I can not seem to find simple instructions. I want intro such as these Top 10 Best Intro Templates of 2013 - YouTube  I would prefer to use Ae and create the intros from scratch is this possible or should I used a template.

It takes someone that has never used After Effects and has little experience with Photoshop Layers, masks and filters or Illustrator layers about 2 days of concentrated study to learn how to create something original with After Effects. AE does come with a fair amount of free templates and presets that will help help you get started. Even purchasing a template requires that you spend a few hours learning the UI and how to render your footage. Video production is complex and there are rules that you have to follow to end up with a usable product that looks good. The best think I can suggest is that you Start here: Basic Workflow
If you want to start learning After Effects after you have gone through the basics I suggest that you make a plan, learn the UI, Layers, Blending Modes and read up on compositing and motion graphic design. All of the Intros that I saw in your sample video were frankly, really boring and unoriginal. I didn't see anything that would establish you as a creative person. There's a lot more to effective design and branding than just throwing your name into a template.

  • Using 1080i and 720p footage for theatrical projection

The 1080i footage was captured with AIC and the 720p with prorez 422. Can anyone tell me the best sequence settings for highest quality output (through DVI port at theatre) and for reduced rendering times?
Should the clips from one or the other be rendered and/or exported with certain sequence settings to better match? Any significant loss with this?
I also have to make SD dvds, but that's not a pressing concern.
The 1080i (Sony V1u) footage could be recaptured, but only if a significant quality improvement could be made another way. The camera was rented.
I've spent hours researching this with little results. To say I would appreciate any help would be a tremendous understatement!

The various HD files are send to me on a drive from the producer, so, they're in the system as HD. It seems that If I build an intro in HD using the native files, the nest that into the SD sequence, I'd have less rendering. However, I'll have mostly 4:3 screen ration with a letterboxed intro to the older clips. Does going from letterboxed video to 4:3 video bother anybody? Is it considered OK? I see it on the news, but not in regular programming.

  • Searching For Footage Or AE Effect (Ocean POV)

    Hi,
I normally don't do this kind of thing so I don't know where to begin looking. I am trying to add an intro to a music video which I've seen hundreds of times over the years but I don't know how to do it... or obtain it. I assume it's some stock footage or perhaps it's done in AE.
It's basically  a POV from a helicopter/drone camera flying low ( almost skimming ) over open water in the ocean at an accelerating speed... you may or may not see a horizon but there are no fish, boats, topography. It's just waves, glints of light to indicate that the camera is moving forward. And it's obviously 'loopable' so that it can go on for long periods.
I've done basic noob things like Google searches for stock footage but I'm obviously not using the correct keywords. Or perhaps it's generated synthetically.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be most appreciated.
    TIA,
    ---JC

Wow. Blender is -awesome-. And I mean in the old-school manner. My jaw dropped when I saw that Ocean Sim demo.
Unfortunately, I'm old enough to know I have enough 'technologies' to deal with. Do they have rendered versions of some of those?
They actually are closer to what I want than any of the stock footage I've seen. In fact, they are almost perfect.
Assuming they could be looped smoothly, I could use those ocean simulator demos pretty much as-is and I'd be -done-.
Or if someone had some Psunami renderings they would work as well.
To the other replies: As happens so often, about 1 minute after my original post, I decided to add the word 'loop' to my Google Search and duhhhhh a whole world of AE and animation links opened up. But thanks. It jogged the mental process for me!

  • Unable to Capture PAL DV footage

I'm working on a project that requires I edit with both PAL and NTSC footage shot on mini-DV. I was about to purchase a plug-in to convert the PAL footage to NTSC, but find that I can't even capture the PAL footage to begin with.
I tried using both a deck and a camera as the source device to capture from and they both play the tape just fine and on the camera's LCD (not a PAL camera by the way), I can view the footage perfectly, but still FCP does not acknowledge any video on the tapes.
I've even tried capturing on iMovie-it tells me that the footage can't be captured because it is 'half-frames' and mentions LP and SP modes. Would this really matter and why does my camera play it just fine?
Also, when I play the tape on the camera and plug-in to a television, the picture keeps rolling, but again, plays perfectly on my non-pal camera.
I've tried switching all pre-sets to PAL, but it doesn't help.
I'm about to make a dub tape with a PAL camera (Sony Z1U) and see what happens, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I have never seen an NTSC camera that plays PAL tapes!
