16:9 Squeezed

I export my Final Cut Express HD 3.5 project to a QuickTime movie. It looks fine in QuickTime. Widescreen 16:9 just as it should. Then I create a new project in iDVD and choose a 16:9 template. Then I add a movie and add my QT file I just saved from FCE. When I preview, the menu looks fine at 16:9, but within that 16:9 window, my movie is squeezed to 4:3.
I downloaded Anamorphicizer, dragged my QT movie over the icon in the dock, and it says "AppleScript Error. QuickTime Player got an error: document 1 doesn't understand the <<event MVWRslca>> message. (-1708).
How can I get my FCE project to burn in iDVD 16:9?

There are also:

and
Preparing your Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro movie to work with iDVD at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6652.html
But Anamorphizer with the Quicktime 7 Player is a simple solution and will work with your present movie. Note that Anamorphizer simple creates a reference movie so you must not move the actual movie until you are completely finished with burning in iDVD.

  • PLEASE help me squeeze the price of this build!!

    Hi everyone-
I have been working on a new computer build with heavy CS5 usage in mind, particularly After Effects and Premiere.  I have regular access to free cameras and gear, and I need an editing machine to facilitate a few personal projects  This machine will be the kernel of a home studio, but will also be used for more ordinary internet / bill-paying types of work as well.
The help I need from you:
The price on my build right now is $3,956.00.    Yikes!!  I need help squeezing the total pricetag of this rig to a more manageable number, hopefully under $3,000.  However, I know that I am purchasing literally everything in the system brand new, including things like monitors, speakers, the keyboard, etc, so my pricetag will be a bit higher than most builders in this forum.
As you'll see, I just mostly went on Newegg and selected the highest-rated component that was in a comfortable price range for me.  I'm pretty sure that everything in my list will be able to play together nicely, but if there are ways that I can take steps down in price without affecting the quality of the system too drastically, those are the changes I want to know about.
TO SUM UP:  After reading this forum for awhile, I've put together the computer I think I WANT.  But I barely know what I'm doing with this stuff!  Can you help me build the computer I NEED?

A little about me /my needs and usage:
I went to film school.  I'm not an editor per se, but I did a number of experimental compositing and animation projects, things that I'd like to resurrect, polish up, and put in my reel.  I also plan to use this machine to digest projects that are not yet shot.  With this machine, I'll be making the switch from Apple systems to PC.
Formats I'd like to be working with in the future:
    -Sony SxS cards (XDCAM EX)
-Many flavors of DV video (DVCPROHD, DV, AVCHD, HDV)
    -HDSLR footage (native H.264-based streams)
    -Maybe RED footage?
I've never built a computer by myself before, but I have friends that have, who can help me.  The components I've selected for this build were based mostly on advice I'd read in this forum, particularly Haarm's many guides for newbies like me
I do NOT need to be the fastest kid on the block, but I do want to build a reliable system the RIGHT WAY.  I don't want to be cheap about cooling.  For the HDD system, I want optimized data throughput that is structured in a sensible way.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who bothers to read even 1/2 of all that stuff, let alone anyone who makes helpful suggestions on how I can bring down the price of this system.
    Talk soon!!
    -Leo K

Thanks to everyone for their helpful advice.  I've taken all of it into account, and I was able to shave almost $700 off of the price of my build!

  • Squeezed Image in QuickTime from FCP

Although I've come close to finding my specific issue when perusing the discussions, I haven't had much success.
I shot in 16:9 on the XL2. I changed all my settings in FCP before logging and capturing to accommodate this. It looks fine in FCP, including in the Canvas. When I export to QuckTime however, the image is squeezed to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio (meaning, it's in 4:3, with the image pushed in on the sides and everything is stretched vertically). I tried different settings in the export window ("Current Settings", "DV NTSC Anamophic", etc.), but it always comes out the same in the end. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
Power Mac G5 (dual Proc.)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

When you export you can change the SIZE to reflect 16:9 or you can change the aspect ratio in the Quicktime settings once you start playing it in QT. Apple-J, I think.

  • Anamorphic 16:9 in FCE squeezes to 4:3 in iDVD '09 - Apple's solution...

A Movie imported and edited with FCE from a Anamorphic 16:9 DV Camera cannot be imported into IDVD '09 without squeezing the image into 4:3. Apple's work around is to export the file from FCE as a 854x480 instead of the native 720x480. This seems to work so far except my question is... does changing the aspect ratio before exporting like this degrade video quality of the final DVD?
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

And here's the best part ...
Don't have QT pro, and the snow leopard quicktime can't seem to do the resizing either. So I was going to just do the resizing under "export using quicktime" where just checking the "16x9" option makes it work correctly.
The only problem is I can't export chapter markers that way! So iDVD can either have correct aspect ratio or chapter markers, not both!
I'm pretty sure the timeline is set to anamorphic...

OK. More information as a result of working with this some more.
There are several disadvantages to following the steps in the KB articles listed in my earlier post. They are:
    1) You will lose all Chapter information that you placed in the sequence while working in FCE/FCP.
    2) You can't use the export as QT reference movie. This requires extra time (CPU and wall clock) and extra disk space to hold the large resulting files.
    3) By doing one more full export, you introduce the possibility of reduced quality in the final product.
    4) I didn't test this but I would expect that compression markers get lost too.
I did find one way to to using the QT reference movie with Chapter information. Following is the information on that:
    1) Export the sequence as described in the FCE/FCP manual to get a QT reference movie including Chapter markers. (A reference movie is usually a lot smaller than files resulting from the KB articles.)
    2) Open the new QT reference movie in Quicktime 7 (may need to reinstall this if you are on Snow Leopard - search the internet for steps to do this).
    3) Once the file is open in QT 7 (NOT QTx) then select Window / *Show Movie Properties*.
    4) Select the Video Track and the *Visual Settings* tab, enter 854 x 480 in the *Scaled Size* and UNCHECK the *Preserve Aspect Ratio* option.
    5) From the File menu, save the movie (I used the Reference Movie option).
    6) Drag this new file into your iDVD project and things should work as expected - Chapters and all.
Bottom line, Apple does not have a clean solution (as far as I know) to a 16:9 workflow between FCE/FCP and iDVD. If you think this is important, please provide feedback at the following site:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutexpress.html
The feedback should include a request to have a better 16:9 workflow from FCE --> iDVD.

  • Word 2007 shrinking tabs to squeeze extra character on a line. How to disable this function?

    Hello,
After six hours of my futile amateur attempts, it's clear I need a pro.
Occasionally in Word 2007, the text I type will be near the maximum the line can hold, and when I type the next character Word will try to squeeze it onto the line by shrinking my left tab. This results in uneven paragraph indents, which looks very sloppy.
If anyone knows a way to make Word just start a new line when the maximum line length is reached, and turn off this "smash the tabs to make it fit" function, I would be very, very grateful for that information.
For reference, if you copy the following four lines into Word 2007, in Courier New, 12 pt, with default tab stops of 0.4", you will see that the second and fourth lines have this shrunken tab problem.
Johanna shuffled over to where Hunter had moved several...

Johanna’s heavy heart lifted slightly. Could this be the one?
    Thank you,

Hi Stefan, thank you for replying, and sorry for the delay.
    Here is an example. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=F3BF58EFEC14E64B!127&authkey=!ABhtu2udead5u-0&ithint=file%2cdocx
It appears that OneDrive does not show this problem unless you select "edit document" then "edit in word". I have Word 07, and in there it causes the sloppy-looking, different indent sizes I am trying to fix.
Thank you for any insights you may be able to share.

  • Multiple Output formats from Single Source File? (Like Squeeze)

I'd really love to be able to batch process encodes in the following manner:
Drop my source video file into AME CS5, select an MP4 preset, and then have it encode multiple bitrate versions while adding filename extensions [e.g. _High (700 kb/s), _Mid (550 kb/s), _Low (400 kb/s)].
The simple answere is to drop, or duplicate, my input clip 3 times and just select 3 presets I could set up under the Hi, Mid, Lo parameters. But that's exactly what I'm trying to work around. I encode video ads for major web-video sites, and the volume is just manageable to batch process these (drag and drop large quantities, select multiple presets at once, hit Start.) To handle each ad we service would be far too time consuming, even for as simple as AME makes it to duplicate/choose new preset. (In the end, our ads jump onto our FTP via AME's FTP upload option, one of it's smartest features!)
We have quite a bit of encoding resources here at work, but AME has been giving us the most favorable results. Other options, such as Sorenson Squeeze, let you import your source clips, then apply 2 or more presets to them, before encoding the whole batch. Is there any similar functionality in Media Encoder? (Really don't want to move our workflow into Squeeze, with it's inferior MP4 encoding.)
Does anybody have any experience with this sort of high-volume multiple-outputs from individual source files? Any tips with scripts or Apple's "Automator" that could streamline this type of batch processing?

Any update on this ability?  We create many in house videos that need to be encoded to 14 different
bitrates for use with Flash Media Server as dynamic http streams.
Currently when I am ready to export a finished sequence, I will pick my first preset and queue it in AME.  Then I duplicate that thirteen times, setting each of the new thirteen queued items to their appropriate bitrates.  Then I have to change each of the output names to be "filename_bitrate.flv".
This process is much slower when queued in AME than if I exported each individually from PP.  I just don't have the time to manually export each version.
I have also started noticing that some of the last few projects won't render beyond the quality of the first queued item.  Do I need to render the largest bitrate file first?
Any indication from Adobe on the correct workflow to create multiple bitrate files to be consumed by FMS as dynamic http streams would be appreciated.
The link above is dead.  Does anyone have an updated link to the document above?

  • Need help with compression rates with Sorenson Squeeze 6, Compressor3.5.2

Hopefully somebody can help me with this...
I am running Sorenson Squeeze 6 on a Mac to try and compress some Apple ProRes 422 videos into an MPEG-2 file. The file will be played in a DirectX application, running on a PC with Windows 7. When being played it looks to be heavily compressed, and I need help with some of the compression settings.
Let me get more into detail...
So I have received a Quicktime .mov that has been encoded with FCP using Apple ProRes 422 compression at 720x486 , 29.97 fps, 40.29 Mbit/s , and the file size is 515.7mb.
So, this is the type of file I will have to compress into an MPEG-2, that will be playing on a...
1.6 GHz Intel Atom 330 Dual Core
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Graphics
    1Gb DDR2 800 Ram
    32Gb SATA Solid State Drive
    Windows 7 Home
Here is what I have done so far on my Mac using Sorenson Squeeze 6 :
I have brought the original file in and created some presets.
First off, I am encoding these MPEG-2 videos using an elementary stream type so I can mux the files using MPEG Streamclip...
Here is a screenshot of the settings I am using in Sorenson :
    - I have changed many of the data rate settings as low as 3000 Kbps, and as high as 15,000 Kbps, and the end result looks essentially the same
    - The audio isn't a problem, so I'm not going to address that.
    - I have used the crop/deinterlace filter and also not used the filter, and it makes a big difference, so obviously it needs to be deinterlaced.
From there I will get the .m2v file and the .m2a file, and then mux those with MPEG Streamclip.
So, I have done 8 different Pre-sets all with various settings playing primarily with the data rate, and the method from 2-pass vbr all the way to 1-pass cbr.
So again, my end result that is playing back on the windows 7 box (the specs that are listed above) looks to be heavily compressed and pixelation occurs.
    - I have also done the exact same with Apple's Compressor, and have gotten better results muxing while compressing, however the end result still tends to be the same, however the end result is much better. I have gone through 8 or so different compression export settings, and just overall still have the same issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Do you have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 or is this a squeeze chute with no option?

I have finally got my computer to operate without any problems and all my programs work fine, the last time I upgraded to Windows 8.1 I had all kind of issues. So my question is; do you have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 or is this a squeeze chute with no option? Right now I can decide if I want to use Skydrive or not but with Windows 8.1 with Onedrive it automaticlly loads my pictures and documents with out my knowledge and I have to go sreaching to see where they went. Remember I am old and want to do it my way. Pavilion p6 2378, with Windows 8, 64bit.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You are not obliged to update to 8.1 but it is beneficial as it is more stable.  With 8.1 you will be eligible to get the free Windows 10 upgrade when it comes out at the end of the year.
As far as Onedive goes you can disable the uploading of your files by changing the settings, also see this:

  • Firefox will not play WebM video encoded by Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8

A short video encoded to WebM using Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8.0.48. Chrome and Opera play the HTML5 webm video with a problem. Firefox 10.0.1 and 11 just display a dimmed window with and "X" in the middle and will not load or play anything. Sorenson is a commercially proven product as confirmed by Chrome and Opera, so what gives with Firefox?

We have just completed our webm testing with Telestream's Episode Pro 6.2.1.1 and not surprisingly, the same results as Sorenson Squeeze Pro 8.
Chrome, Opera and Safari browsers play HTML5 webm video as expected.
Firefox rigidly enforces the server .htaccess configuration to specifically state Mime Types, then it will/does work.

  • Web page content is squeezed onto left side of page.

firefox worked great until I enlarged the fonts so I could read the words... sorry I am older and need larger text.
Ever since I get weird results on some websites.
Example: www.ibfx.com the entire right side (under the header and taps) of the page is black. can see nothing. Most details are squeezed onto the left side of the page. Links are still active but only 1/2 of the link is visible.
The page works just fine with Inet explorer but I want to use Firefox. I have tried deleting firefox and reloading it but that did not help. Also do not want to lose my saved links and bookmarks. Can you help? My email is [email protected]
    Thanks, RobertJ.

Hi Cor-el... Thanks for your ideas .... however I still have the problem. I removed all cookies and cleared the cache. No help. It appears that the page is crowed over to the left side, as if force-fitting into a frame.
Also tried https but it made no apparent difference.
Have also run Ad-Aware and MalwareBytes... no problems there.
Ran a anti-virus check (Microsoft Essentials) that showed no problem.
Checked out the page on another browser (Chrome) and no problem there.
I have added a screenshot of the problem. It is a PNG file made with Win7 snipping tool. Maybe that will help? I have reduced that image so as to include the entire space.
Certainly appreciate your assistance. Any other ideas?
    RobertJ.

  • Mixing "letterboxed" and "squeezed" footage in the same sequence

This is a good one. All footage shot on a DVX100, which has 2 ways of getting widescreen: squeeze and letterbox.
We shot 2 tapes worth of footage three weeks ago using squeeze for widescreen. I have since made a rough cut of all that footage.
Today, we shot the remaining scenes, but they were shot letterbox for widescreen (due to a communication errore between myself and the DP).
We discovered this halfway through shooting today, and decided to keep shooting letterbox because it will be easier to convert the squeezed footage to letterbox than vice versa.
Oh, and the squeezed footage is all outdoors, the letterboxed all indoors, so matching isn't an issue.
    My question(s) is (are):
How would you deal with this (reshoots are out of the question)?
Is there a simple way to convert the footage I've already edited without losing the edits?
Is there a magical fix that will fix it without any effort on my part? (just kidding about that last one)
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the tips!
What is your final output hoping to be? Do you need
anamorphic enhancement? (ie. you're outputting to
DVD, or for display on a 16:9 monitor, or for film)
It will be on DVD ultimately, but projected digitally for the premiere and possibly sent to festivals. It just needs to be widescreen, enhanced or not.
I take it your existing sequence is 16:9?
    Yes.
    If so...
    1. Open a new 4:3 sequence in the timeline.
    2. Drag your existing 16:9 sequence into the 4:3
sequence but don't let go of the mouse
    3. Press and hold the Command key, then release the
    mouse.
    4. The contents of your 16:9 sequence should
now be inserted (as letterboxed clips) into the 4:3
    sequence
I'll try this when I get home.
Or, when you meant 'convert the footage,' where you
    talking about the source files?
If it's as easy as those steps, great! However, the two formats need to output to DVD together. I assume this will simply add more render time to that end?
I don't care about the source files if I can ultimately output it harmoniously.
    Thanks again!

  • 16x9 assests play back as 4x3 squeezed on normal TV, but not laptop

Hi I have a lot of experience with DVD Studio Pro, but for some reason I cannot get my 16x9 stuff to play back correctly on a DVD player. I have EVERYTHING set to 16x9. I have it set on the "track" and the "menu" and in preferences.
It plays fine on my laptop, but it squeezes on any other dvd player and plays back as 4x3, not letterboxed 16x9...
I never used to have this problem with the same workflow.
    Help?

    Hi:
Just to double check, did you set them as 16:9 letterboxed (not pan&scan)?
Did you check that some DVD player in your laptop is not ignoring the DVD configuration?
    Hope that helps !

  • Video is squeezed horizontally

I have my resolution set to 720 on my 1280x1024 computer monitor using an HDMI to DVI cable. The problem is that on half the NON-widescreen videos the picture is squeezed on the sides horizontally. Pinching the pictures. This only happens on some non-widescreen content.
Usually widescreen videos go full screen clipping off the sides of the picture which is good.
Should i try a component video to VGA cable instead? 1080p isn't supported by my monitor.

It's difficult to suggest what is going on, when the effects of encoding are multiplied by the effects of scaling on your monitor, there are many possibilities.
When your PC uses the monitor, it uses a graphics driver that is capable of handling a number of resolutions, the monitor on its own may not have the ability to handle different resolutions and how it displays 1280 x 720 on its 1280 x 1024 screen may or may not be correct.
A properly encoded 16:9 video if displayed properly by your monitor should have black bands top and bottom, a properly encoded 4:3 video should have black (or grey) bands on all sides. At no time should the whole screen be filled by video.
Your issue is not resultant from the Apple tv, it outputs a fixed resolution regardless, it's either your encoding or your monitor or perhaps a mixture of the two.

  • EMac display shaking and squeezing in, IVAD cable?

    Hi,
I'm trying to determine if my eMac is experiencing an IVAD cable problem. The screen will pinch in on the sides and both the top and bottom disappear. It shakes and pinches in and then will go back to normal and then the squeezing and shaking begin again. This occurs during the first fifteen minutes or so after startup. A gentle rap on the side of the computer sometimes sets things right. Right now, for instance, the screen is fine. But it took some time to get to this stable state.
I thought it was an electrical outlet problem or an RF problem, so I've removed most of the other things on that circuit and changed the arrangement of nearby stuff. The squeezing and shaking still occurs. I began to notice that the eMac would die while sleeping and then after rebooting I saw the shaking and squeezed screen. I've since removed other items from the circuit, so I may have cleared up one problem (an inadequate circuit). The warm-up period, shaky screen problem remains.
I've done the PRAM and battery replacement stuff. I'm also pretty good at taking the eMac apart (I've replaced the optical drive). If need be, I'll replace the cable. But, the description of my screen acting up seems a bit different then the classic IVAD problem.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your posts. I opened her up before Christmas to check out the IVAD cable and think about whether it was the cause of the problem. There continued to be issues with the screen (same shaking and shrinking in from the sides). Also, sleep mode induced shutdown. My eMac's serial number is out of range as well.
I backed off of dealing with the IVAD cable when it was obvious that I didn't have the tools, patience, or strength of heart to deal with that big a problem (one end of the IVAD cable is almost inaccessible). I did check to see that it was properly installed. I blew out some dust, put it back together, and pressed the PMU reset button just for grins. After a quick test to see if it ran, I shut everything down for several days for a Christmas trip out of town.
Since our return, there hasn't been a problem. The screen is steady as a rock. Weird?
I'll be interested in what you hear from the Apple folks...

  • DVX and the Squeeze Mode in FCP

    Good morning,
I recently experimented with the Squeeze mode on my DVX100b. I shot in 24pA and captured to FCP using the advanced pull down setup. The clip was recognized as anamorphic (judging by the checked box in the Anamorphic column of the browser) and I just put it into the time line and exported it as a Quicktime Movie using the 'current settings' default.
What I noticed when reviewing the QT movie is that everything looks a little squished on the horizontal plane (shorter and fatter). I don't mind since I'm 7'2" and weigh 98 pounds but my co-star, my dog Fezic, is complaining. He looks like he's 1'6" and weighs 98 pounds!
Have I missed something essential to using DVX Squeeze footage in FCP?
    Cheers,
    John

    Hey John,
I could be wrong but, I think that QT will only recognize the source media's native pixel aspect ratio, which in your case is squished (squeeze mode).
Are you going to DVD? If so, DVDSP will allow you to check 16:9/anamorphic, in which case it should unsquish your footage.
I just picked up a DVX100B myself, (love it-by the way--just don't have the bucks for HVX yet..but some day). I haven't gotten as far as exporting/burning so I'm not positive about this, however I've worked on many projects that was shot 16:9 (1280 X 960) on the HVX which FCP ingests as and recognizes as 960 X 720. If I had to export a roughcut sequence for client or for composer, etc. I would always panic B/C the QT made it looked squished. But, it was brought to my attention after scouring the forums here and elsewhere that QT does not recognize 'SQUARE' pixels.
Also, (I'm sure you're aware), but if not, you should check out dvxuser.com. They have loads of info on your cam and how it integrates w/ FCP.
    Best of Luck!
