2010 Macbook pro freezes a lot, but mouse still moves. It unfreezes if you wait. It also hard crashes... Also, weird lines and screen flashes.

I have a 2010 Macbook pro running snow leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8).  First off, this has been the worst computer I've ever owned or have heard of someone having, Mac or PC.  There hasn't been a time where something hasn't been wrong.  I'm going to list my specs, my current problems and maybe list previous problems after that.  Any advice or suggestions would be great.  My brother works for apple out in Cali and I've been sending him crash and bug reports and he can't seem to figure out what's going on.
Specs:
2010 Macbook Pro (Mac OSX 10.6.8)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: Intel HD Graphics (288 VRAM) and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512 VRAM)
(if you want more info, just ask)
To start things off, my computer hard crashes at random points playing basically any game.  StarCraft 2 (when I could play the game prior to Blizzard patching my OS out of the minimum requirements), League of Legends, MineCraft and others all crash while in use.  My computer screen suddenly flashes white and then to black and whatever audio may have been playing in the past second of gameplay is thrown into a constant loop.  The screen is solid black with no mouse and there is no keyboard functionality.  The only thing I can do is hold down the power button.  I first started noticing this problem back when StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm came out.  I would crash every 4 or 5 games in this way.  Since that was happening I resorted to playing other games such as League of Legends.  I wasn't having any trouble at all, but gradually it started to have the hard crashing issues.  Initially every handful of games, now it crashes in roughly 50% of the games I play.  This happens while I have NO other applications open and this has happened even after a complete restart with only 2 things opening at startup.  League started crashing in this way after I brought my computer in to have a fan replaced.
Another thing which has started happening since I had my fan replaced at the apple store: My computer has become very sluggish at times and my computer freezes in another way.  Many times a day, I will find I click on something in an application and the entire computer locks up.  There's no spinning beachball.  There's no movement of any sort on the screen and there is no button functionality, but I can move the mouse.  Clicking does nothing.  This sort of freeze lasts for about 30 seconds up to 5 or 6 minutes or so.  After that, it suddenly just decides to work again.  I can tell when it unfreezes because the clock in the corner jumps to the correct time.  This has happened frequently while using Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  It also happened while trying to use Skype.  It was freezing the most when facebook or youtube has been open, but it happens without that happening as well.  One of the first times I noticed it, earlier this year, I was searching for work and tried to go to this website: http://www.nhab.org/ (looking for a job).  It froze my computer as I described above (and I didn't know it would unfreeze after several minutes, so I thought my computer was completely frozen). I restarted, went to the same website and it froze again.  I did this a third time and it froze again, so I restarted again.  On the fourth try, it loaded.  The frequency of this problem is ridiculous.  I actually decided to delete Google Chrome from my computer (and its support files) since my computer would freeze the most often with Chrome (though I used Chrome mostly for youtube and watching tv shows online).  Almost instantly after deleting Chrome, my computer was running significantly faster.  things loaded quicker in other browsers and aplications loaded smoother.  My text no longer lagged when typing in facebook...  It hasn't solved the freezing, though the freezing tends to last less time now.
Another thing that happens, which I am not sure is normal: When my computer is booting, after the grey screen, it changes to light blue.  During this light blue time, often times white horizontal centimeter to inch wide bars will flash across the screen near the top.  This also happens on shutting down.  I also noticed that when it shuts down the screen doesn't just shut off.  The screen flickers quick for up to a second and then it is off.  It doesn't just turn off.
My computer has also occassionally flashed for a brief fraction of a second, to the blue start up color and back to whatever I am doing.
Those are all issues I am having right now and I am beginning to wonder if this several thousand dollar computer is capable of doing much more than just writing text..
Prior issues I have had:
Right from the start, I have had major graphical issues which I showed to the people at the apple store and they reinstalled flash, but they really didn't know what was going on.  These glitches would tiles previous graphical things I had done in an artistic mozaic across my desktop, replacing my background image with broken mozaics.  It's hard to explain without showing, so here are 2 screenshots from it:
The people at the store thought it was just flash... but I don't understand how that could be flash.  I would have to flip through different desktop backgrounds I used to make it go away.  After it doing this for 2 years, it has only happened once since then and not very badly..
Another issue I had: The battery on my laptop just about exploded... I woke up one morning with my laptop sitting on my night stand as usual, but there was a small crack across part of my trackpad.  I was scared because I thought I must have done something... I went to the bathroom, took a shower and when I came back the crack was farther across the trackpad.  I had breakfast, came upstairs and my trackpad had 1 crack across the whole thing with multiple mini cracks going in every direction from it.  After telling my brother what was going on, he quickly said that it was the battery and to take it to a store.  I took it to the store and showed them what was happening and they very quickly took it out back and I quote "threw the battery in a firesafe immediately" because when they opened the laptop it started to quickly expand.  This ended up cracking my trackpad as well as bending the bottom of the body on the laptop.  All had to be replaced...
Then I had the fan sounding like a weedwacker, so I had it replaced a couple months ago and a couple months ago is when the freezing began, the computer started running slowly and all games crash the computer.
I have had a lot of things go wrong, not a lot of things go right and I'm really frustrated.  Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to stop freezing or how to make it stop hard crashing during any of the games I play?
Basically, what I have done so far is reset the PRAM I think?  I held command + option + P + R on start up and had it chime 3 or 4 times.  Other than that, I don't know what to do.... suggestions?

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
    Thanks for reading!

Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

  • 2010 MacBook Pro: Freeze w/ NVDA kernal error. Hardware fail or software problem?

Hundreds of complaints about the hardware design flaw which Apple never addressed in their 2009 model year computers, wherein the GeForce graphics card overheats and causes constant crashing, is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/27865920?tstart=0#27865920
How about the same sort of problem in a 2010 MPB running OSX 10.6.8.  Screen locks up, case is very very hot, need to use the Power Key to shut down.  Since they never solved the 2009 problem, they probably used the same flawed design in the 2010 computers.
I have to keep this computer going as long as possible. I've used Macs exclusively since my Mac Plus, but 21st Century Apple is a stinking crappy company, which has ****** with me too much.  I won't be buying anymore Apple products.
There seem to be no driver updates for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and OSX 10.6.8.
Lately I get one or two freezes a day, always when browsing in FireFox (latest rev, which is 36.0.4). Need to shut down with power key. The hardware test on the Applications disk says my machine is OK. Is my hardware failing, or is this some software issue with FireFox? Or is OSX 10.6.8 simply too old to keep up with Flash and other web page crap?  Can I slather a bunch of conductive grease inside my case to get more heat flow to the case itself?

The logic board is failing and would have to be replaced if you want to keep using the machine. Apple would probably decline to service the machine because of its age. The part may no longer be available.

  • 15 inch Mid-2010 MacBook Pro freezing since installing Lion

I've had this problem for a while now. It started a few weeks after I installed Lion in the summer. My MacBook Pro would just freeze without warning and the only thing I can do is a force shutdown. I've checked the logs, and these freezes do not log themselves like other crashes, there is no record of them happening. I have also noticed that Apple has identified that my particular model of MacBook Pro can experience an issue where it may freeze intermittently or stop displaying video, and as such they put out an update to help remedy this, which I have installed and the problem still exists.
The freeze appears to happen application by application. One application may freeze, so I attempt to force quit this, but then the force quit window freezes, and then whatever else I click results in a spinning wheel, forcing me to hold down the power button to restart my Mac. I never had this issue with Snow Leopard, it has only started since I upgraded to Lion.
I have taken it into an Apple store, and they could not indentify any issues since there were no logs of the crashes. They wiped my laptop and suggested I try using it for a while without any of my data on it to see if the freezes still happened - they didn't. He then said not to restore my data from a Time Machine backup as any bugs that may be causing these freezes would also be restored. Therefore, I installed every application manually and only copied over my documents and music manually. For a few months, this fixed the issue, but I have noticed that it has started happening again, more and more frequently just like before.
I've also run the Apple Hardware Test that came with my Mac and it found no issues. I've also reset the SMC and PRAM to no avail.
    My specs are:
    2.4GHz Intel Core i5
    8GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    Lion 10.7.3
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this issue or knows why it is happening, please let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.
Apologies for the long description, I wanted to be a detailed as possible.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

    Hello Nathan, Linc Davis,

  • Why is my 2010 macbook pro freezing and shutting down every time I start it?

Today, after using my macbook pro to upload pictures from my iphone, my computer started having problems and shutting down. The screen goes gray and a box pops up saying that a problem exists and that I need to restart my computer. I've only had the macbook since last November, so I don't understand why I've been having so many problems with it. This happened a few times to a lesser extent in Senegal when I was there for 5 months. I used a mac power adapter so I don't think it could be an over-charge problem.
    Please help!

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

  • TS3423 Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Freeze's

I have a macbook pro i7 2.66 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HD. Never had a problem till I installed Mountain Lion.  Every now and then my my computer freezes. Hard drive won't stop running even if it's on sleep mode. It's **** frustrating. Now with this hard drive running non stop and with the system freeze's every now and then i fear that it will damage some other hardwares due to this problems. Is there anybody know's or have any solution with this problems? Thank you! Appreciate it.

    try these:
open disk utility and verify your disk.  once that's done, verify your disk permissions - repair if needed.  that might take an hour or more depending on how much repairs are needed.
once that's done, restart your macbook.
if that doesn't help, try doing a SMC RESET.
    good luck.

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro freezes and restarts when moved.

My macbook pro crashes daily and sometimes I have to keep turning it on for about 5 minutes because it doesn't start up it just beeps. once it starts up it tends to crash when moved even slightly. I have the crash reports and I'm hoping someone can help me. This problem started to occur once I upgraded to mountain lion and I dont know if the problem has to do something with mountain lion or if it's just coincidence. I searched around on the web and think that maybe it is my logic board. Thank you in advance.

There was a similar thread in here yesterday.
This can be a mechanical issue: a loose connector, broken wire or cracked logic board that causes power from the battery to be interrupted when the Mac is jostled. Unless damage is grossly evident, tracking down the exact point of failure is an exasperating Sherlockian exercise.

  • Unresponsive system but mouse still moves; even after restart

I was transferring a few files over my LAN wirelessly via file sharing to another macbook (B) when that macbook was closed and caused a disconnect. My macbook (A) has experienced issues since this disconnect. Even after restarts and resetting the pram, my system is unresponsive. The mouse will move but I cannot open applications, folders, files, or even the menu. It is as if my mouse is moving over top a picture of the desktop. I did manage to click and highlight my HD icon once but as soon as I did, the color wheel showed up and never stopped. My hard drive has over 10GB of space free. I was able to do a target disk boot and test the drive and its ok according to disk utility. Any ideas about what I could do would be greatly appreciated...preferably without wiping the hard drive.

The first issue occurred while I was transferring large files from one computer to another via afp file sharing over my wireless network. In the middle of this transfer, someone closed the receiving macbook. The macbook sending the files didn't respond well after this. It would intermittently freeze without a linked resource draining process. I believe the first occurrence was when I tried to right click a file that had been interrupted during transfer. I forced a restart, used the killall Finder command in terminal thinking that it might still be trying to transfer the file to a ghost in some way...even though that didn't make sense. I was able to verify and repair the external drive the file was on. After doing this and resetting the PRAM, it was back to normal for a little while. After a bit of normal activity (nothing strenuous), it began to freeze again. I tried the same steps and also booted in target disk mode so I could use the other macbook to run diagnostics. The drive got repaired. I attempted to restart the affected macbook but I couldn't do anymore than one thing and the never-ending colorwheel would appear. That one thing could be a single click on a file or an attempt of opening an application. After that I turned to this discussion forum after already impatiently attempting to safe mode boot and repair disk permissions. I tried this again with patience after your suggestion. It worked for a few hours and I was able to surf the web once more and go about the usual. I pulled up dashboard and pressed command+ to bring up the list of widgets and it froze on me again. I attempted previous steps again after restarting but there has been no difference in response. Throughout the entirety of this experience, there have been no error messages. Also, there's no difference in behavior if I disconnect everything but the power cable.
Sorry for the lengthy post but hopefully it will be helpful.

  • 2010 MacBook Pro freezes up during use with black screen

I have an i7 Mid 2010 MBP with 8GB of RAM, SSD and 10.6.8.  It has been freezing up on me with a black screen and looping audio, and I have to hold down the power button to reset it.  It seems to freeze most when I have either Firefox or Parallels open.  Does anybody have any idea what would be causing this?  If I were to post the Error Report here, is there any information in it I should delete first so that I don't accidentally show everybody my personal information?  Thanks.

Satchow, I have the same problem!!!
It's hard to believe that I spent 4.500 dollars in a notebook from a company with such fame and with this huge fail.
What are they going to do about it? Gave us a new one? Its not our problem.
Apple Inc. have to make a recall!!! What do you think about it, my friends?
    Regards,
    Rodrigo TP

  • Screen Freezes but Mouse Still Moves

Hey I have an iMac with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors and I am running OS 10.6.7 and my screen freezes (sometimes goes to a black screen or many lines repeated) but my mouse is still able to move, then I have to shut down manually with the power button to reboot. It happens mostly when I am gaming with games such as starcraft 2 but sometimes with Word or Safari.
I have cleared my cache, vacuumed my computer, reinstalled OS X, tried regulating the temperature with smcfan but nothing works.  I also took it to futureshop on my warranty and they couldnt help me, nor could multiple Mac Phoneline assistants.
    Any solutions?

I added some Crucial Ram to my late '07 iMac (Aluminum, 20", 2.4 ghz),
Apple did some warranty work on it for me, a year or so ago, but.
I jumped up the Ram from 2-4. It's only showing 3 Gb's now.
And, the fans were ALL running at Full Speed! Wow, vacuumed my desk!
Anyway, I came here, and was advised to do several things, but the one that worked,
was 'Resetting the System Managements Controller" SMC.
    1  Shut down the computer.
2 Uplug the computer's power cord.
3 Wait fifteen seconds. (HMM, what couldja do?)
    4 Attache computer's power cord.
5 Press the power button, to turn computer back on.
I heard a high pitched 'Chong', (Higher than the start up sound), then, the start up sound.
Now, I'm in my comfort zone again!
Dam, if that didn't work wonderfully?!!!
    It did!
I hope that this may work for you!
    Be well.
PS btw, I still can't get my 2nd stick of Ram to work.
    I'm still working on that.
And, my third, Western Dig, 2 TB external HD!
What's with these third party suppliers?
    They suck!
Apple has to bring some control back in!
I bought the WD @ a Mac Store, (Cherry Hill, NJ)
    The Memory, through Amazon.
    Grrrrrrrr!
Hope this works for you, let us know, OK?
    Pete

  • 2010 MacBook Pro - something is wrong (it is very slow)

    Hi folks!
    I am using 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3...
It is 320 GB and 90 GB free.
Computer started to act crazy 2 months ago. But now the symptoms started to be intolerable.
It takes so long during start up, also even it is on completely, every time I opened first program (even after 10 minutes) it freezes for some time and then continue to work. Almost every program open very late, and when I click the icon on the dock to quit the program for most of the programs, computer freezes and then says application not responding, therefore I always click force quit.
Sometime even if I dont push the computer so much, it freezes and quits the program that I am using at that time. And sometimes (let's say I want to open activity monitor under utilities), I click application folder on the dock, then click utilities folder but nothing happens and it does not open the folder, then I again try to click Application folder, then utilities but again it does not open the folder, after 3 or 4 times, it open the utilities folder then I am able to click activity monitor in the folder, and it opens it.
Also I started to hear hard drive sound a while ago, just like external harddiscs that seems will be broken soon. In case, I back up it with time machine...
Additionally, is it normal Google Chrome uses so many memory? When I watch a video in Chrome, everything becomes even more slow.
And last thing, when I use skype, camera quits spontaneously, sometimes when I click start my camera, it starts, sometimes it says camera is used by another application and it does not start it. Also, skype just started to become (switches between) offline and online spontaneously.
What is wrong with my computer? Should I format it?

Bootcamp is installed by default but if you have not touched bootcamp to install your Windows partition, you shouldn't encounter the problem I was describing.
As for Parallels - just thinking out loud. When you talk about "Running chrome", are you actually running chrome on Mac or are you running chrome in Windows (Parallels).
Also, do you keep your Parallels running all the time when you're not actually using it?

  • Should I put the new SSD drive in main HDD bay or the Superdrive/Optical bay for a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro?

    Hello All,
I'm considering getting a new SSD drive to add on to my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro (13 inches, unibody), and wondering which one of the following two options I should really adapt:
    (1) Replace the original OEM hard drive in the main bay with the new SSD drive, and then remove the Superdrive (or the optical CD drive) and to be fitted into an external enclosure for using it externally in the future, and then relocate the original OEM hard drive into the Superdrive position, so both the new SSD (preferably for running the OS and system files) and the old OEM hard drive (for storing media and documents for example) could be used; and
    (2) Keep the original OEM hard drive in place in the main drive, and buy a superdrive/optical drive caddy to goes with the new SSD drive, and together place the new SSD drive fitted inside the caddy into the position of the Superdrive/Optical CD drive, and configure the boot preference to be booting from the Superdrive/Optical Drive (which is now the SSD drive with OS and system files);
I've done some researches and some suggested that option (2) is better approach for at least two reason: (a) the MBP main drive come with some sort of shock proof sensor, so placing the original optical hard drive in the main is better than placing it in the super/optical drive where there is NO shock sensing feature provided, and placing SSD in the super/optical drive, one doesn't really have to worry so much about shocks; and (b) as during the process of shutting down the MBP, for optical hard drive, some power will sometimes needed to finally spin down the drive, but if such optical hard drive is place in the superdrive, the power maybe cut off right away when MBP shut down, which may cause issue to the optical hard drive in a long run as it never properly spin it down.
Then the main concern is that, if I adapt option (2) above, placing SSD in the super/optical drive bay and install and running the OS from there, will it decrease the performance (i.e. speed, latency, and etc.) as if i was to put the new SSD in the main drive?
Also, any suggestions with respect to Samsung 840 EVO vs. Samsung 850 EVO (250GB)? any well-rated HD caddy aside from OWC for moving the main HDD to optical CD bay? and perhaps an external enclosure for the Superdrive?  Thanks in advance for any comment and/or suggestion.
    - Jack

Could you provide some rationale(s) behind it?  As far as I know, the mid 2010 Macbook Pro, the HDD is running via the SATA interface at running at 3.0 Gb/s, which is SATA II, and the Super-drive and/or the Optical drive, which is also running via SATA II interface, so I would assume the performance (i.e. primarily in speed) would be similar if not the same by placing the SSD drive in either one of the two places.
Also, wouldn't it be better by placing the SSD in the optical so the OEM HDD could be kept in the original main bay since it has the shock-sensing feature there?

  • 2010 Macbook Pro Laggy

So I have a 2010 Macbook Pro that I have been having a very difficult time with. I bought it online a coupe days ago and it has yet to work properly for me. When I boot the computer up it runs unbeleivbly laggy and the mouse jumps all over the place as well as everything going in slow motion. The fan comes on immedietaly when I power the computer on and never turns off.
I have another macbook pro that works fine So I tried swapping the Hard Drives and still the same issue. I have also tried removing the ram and reinstalling it and still no luck there.
The computer has Snow leopard installed currently and I'm running out of ideas on what it could be; maybe a motherboard issue, I'm not sure?

In addition to the SMC reset suggested by BobRz, perform A PRAM reset:

Also run an Apple Hardware Test:

  • Macbook Pro freezing while audio/mouse keeps going

I'm on a Retina Macbook Pro Early 2013 Yosemite 10.10 and I recently have been experiencing a lot of problems with the screen freezing. Can't access any applications during the freeze but the mouse still moves and the audio keeps going, it's just that nothing reacts. Once I force shut down and reboot, I keep getting "graphic errors". Does anyone know of a fix? Some of the times I'm not even running intensive applications, just chrome and perhaps itunes.
    Thanks!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
